Gile, Logan James
Logan James Gile, infant son of Greg and Tracy Gile, was born and died Thursday, July 20, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Private family services were held.

Cordes, Myrtle G.
Myrtle G. Cordes, 87, Rushford, MN, died Friday, July 21, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Funeral services were Monday, July 24 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Rushford, with Rev. Frederick Buth officiating. Burial was in Money Creek Cemetery.

Bonow, August H.
August H. Bonow, 82, Lewiston, MN, died Sunday, July 23, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

He was born August 9, 1917 to Emil and Amanda (Benck) Bonow on the family farm in Altura, MN. He married Adeline M. Janzow on June 20, 1942 at Silo Lutheran Church.

August was a farmer and resided on the farm until August 1999. He was an active member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church at Norton, on the finance committee for over 40 years, the church cemetery board and was an avid choir member. He also worked at Fiberite in Winona.

August enjoyed woodworking projects for his family, fishing, playing cards and family gatherings at the farm. He will always be remembered for his faith, humility and sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife, Adeline; a son, Wes (Linda) Bonow of St. Charles, MN; two daughters, Bonita (Ervin) LaGrow of Coloma, MI, and Mary (John) Schmoker of Winona; five grandchildren, Joe, Mandy, Alison, Nicholas and Christina; three great-grandchildren, Andrea, Tyler and Page; a sister, Helen L. Bonow of Lewiston; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arnold and Ervin.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 26 at 10 a.m. at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church at Norton, with Rev. David Eckert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Smith, Nina
Nina Smith, 70, Winona, died Sunday, July 23, 2000 at her home.

A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, July 26 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Msgr. Roy Literski and Father John Vincent concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.

Thiel, Ethel B.
Ethel B. Thiel, 76, formerly of 1272 West Second St., died Sunday, July 23, 2000 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

Ethel was born on February 14, 1924 at Eberle, KY, to Grant and Lilly (Cunningham) Vicars. She married Vernon N. Thiel on March 9, 1964 at Covington, KY. Vern and Ethel moved to Winona in 1984.

She is survived by a son, Rainey Spicer of Winona; daughters, Marlene (Dennis) Dillinger and Willa (Frank) Kunda, both of Winona; nine grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one brother, Ted (Sue) Vicars and two sisters, Mary (Taylor) Harris and Eva (Roger) McIntosh, all of Annville, KY.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern, a son, Vern Thiel, Jr., a sister, Juanita Phillips, and a brother, Paul Vicars.

Funeral services were Tuesday, July 25 at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gene Green officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Kaiser, Richard E.
Richard E. Kaiser, 67, of 755 52nd Avenue, Goodview, MN, died Thursday, April 27, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 19, 1932 in Winona to Harold W. and Evelyn M. (Berger) Kaiser. She married Darlene J. Waletzko on June 30, 1958 in North Creek, WI.

Richard was employed by Northern States Power Company as a gas service foreman.

He was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish, the National Rifle Association and the American Legion.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene of Goodview; a daughter, Lori Ann (Hamed) El-Afandi, Chandler, AZ; a son, Patrick M. Kaiser of Winona; a daughter, Christine M. (Lance) Duellman, Winona; and three grandchildren, Megan, Colin and Nicole Duellman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Harold J. Kaiser.

A Memorial Mass was offered Monday, May 1 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Michael J. Cronin officiating.

Honorary pallbearers were James Christensen, Wes Martin, Randy Nastvold, Ron Marsolek, Bruce Tanberg, Sr., Dick Pampuch, Bruce Tanberg, Jr., and Jerry Engler.

The American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 provided military honors at the church following the Mass.

Schwartz, Ambrose T. "Ambe" Sr.
Ambrose T. "Ambe" Schwartz Sr., 68, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000 at his daughter's home in Centerville, WI.

He was born August 31, 1931 in Arcadia, WI, to Thomas and Elizabeth (Gawlick) Schwartz. He married Lois R. Gross on July 6, 1936 in Alma, WI. They later divorced. Lois died June 11, 1994.

Ambe had many accomplishments in his life. He farmed in Wisconsin, then moved to Winona and started his first business as Ambe's TV and Antenna Service. This was the beginning of all the ventures he owned and operated. To name a few, The Hollywood Bar in Winona, Club 4-Mile in Bluff Siding, 4 Mile Trucking and Black Topping Service in Bluff Siding, The Acorn Ballroom in Centerville, Ambe's Cafe in Centerville, River Valley Aggregate in Trempealeau, Schwartz Recycling in Trempealeau, Schwartz Music and Games in the tri-state area, and Country View Drive Inn in Centerville. He also bought and sold restaurant equipment.

Ambe had many friends and acquaintances. All who knew him knew they had a good friend in him. He was very helpful to the "underdog." Ambe was a self-made man. He worked very hard to get there.

During his illness he stayed with his daughter Pennie and her husband Fritz who cared for him, and had a very special bond. We are proud to be in their family for the love and care they gave our Dad, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather.

He is survived by five children: Patricia (John) Jacobson, Winona, Pamela (Sylvester) Weaver, Trempealeau, WI, Pennie (Fredrick III) Stark, Centerville, WI, Ambrose (Diane) Schwartz, Jr., Trempealeau, and Kevin Schwartz, Onalaska, WI; a step-son, Keith Schindler of Winona; nine grandchildren: John Jr. (Dana), Christopher (Melinda), Heather, Kerry Ann, Melissa, Samantha, Kyle, Benjamin and Jennifer; one great-grandson, Damien; and three sisters, Eileen (Ted) Konkel of Centerville, Elaine (Roland) Waldera, Melrose, WI, and Darlene Schwartz of Winona.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 2 at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Chapel with Rev. Robert G. Meyer officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Arcadia, WI.

Pallbearers were Chester Katula, Nathan Grossell, Orvin Henderson, Bob Mueller, Tony Bambenek, Norbert Ziegler and Nathan Hale.

A memorial is being arranged.

McCarthy, Thomas P.
Thomas P. McCarthy, 65, dedicated and loving father, grandfather and friend, died unexpectedly on Thursday, April 27, 2000.

Funeral services were Monday, May 1 at the Cathedral of St. Paul. Burial was in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, MN.
