Osowski, Diane M.

Diane M. Osowski, 56, Route 2, East Burns Valley, Winona, died Sunday, January 23, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, WI.

She was born November 13, 1943 in Winona to Cecil E. and Ruby (Bauer) Nowlan. She married Richard D. Osowski on November 21, 1959 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Winona.

Diane was employed by the U.S. Postal Department for 18 years and was the first lady letter carrier in Winona. She especially enjoyed making quilts and loved her flowers and animals.

She will be sadly missed by her husband, Richard of Winona; two daughters, Linda Krett and Joanne Lange, both of Winona; three grandchildren, Alicia Krett, Corey Krett and Ryan Lange; her mother, Ruby Nowlan of Winona; two brothers, John Nowlan, Trempealeau, WI and Guy (Susan) Nowlan, Hopkins, MN; and two sisters, Rosemary Fort of Winona and Charlotte (Duane) Gaulke of Houston, MN.

She was preceded in death by her father.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Saturday, January 29, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with preliminary services at 10:00 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. Rev. Robert G. Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home where there will be Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Duane Gaulke, Lee Besek, Jason Bratland, Lee Krett, William Nepper and Kevin Wirtz.

Risser, Bernice E.
Bernice E. Risser, 83, 165 East Fourth St., died Sunday, January 23, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born June 29, 1916 in Winona to John and Lena (Vick) Peterson. She married Elmer James Risser on October 5, 1935 in St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He died February 25, 1982.

Bernice was an employee of Federal Bakery for 15 years. She was a volunteer at the Winona Senior Center and Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Winona. She was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Bernice was a loving and caring person who took time for others, constantly giving and expecting nothing in return. She enjoyed playing cards, visiting the Senior Center and spending time with her many friends. She touched many lives and brought them happiness.

Survivors include two sons, Jack (Marilyn) Risser of Minneapolis, MN and Terry (Nancy) Risser, Shorewood, MN; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Merchlewitz of Minnesota City, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter, Sandra Merchlewitz, five sisters, a brother and daughter-in-law.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 27 at 10 a.m. at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Ronald T. Dommer officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home and Thursday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.

Honorary pallbearers will be the grandchildren.

Allen, Edward M.
Edward McDowell Allen, 75, of Lake San Marcos, CA and formerly of Walnut Creek, CA and Winona, died Monday, January 17, 2000.

He is survived by his wife Geri, daughter Tracy Barnett and husband Cooper, son Steve Allen and wife Nancy, daughter Paige Allen, son Dr. Richard Allen and wife Anne, daughter Lynne Sperry and husband George, daughter Holly Nelson, and sisters-in-law, Jan Allen and Kay Macemon. His grandchildren include Casey and Brady Barnett, Michael Allen, Robert and Thomas Allen, Christin and Michael and John and Bryan and Jessica Sperry.

Ed was born in Winona on November 7, 1924. He graduated from the Northwestern Military and Naval Academy at Lake Geneva, WI in 1942 and completed his college education at St. Mary's College in Winona in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943-1946, including serving as an officer and navigator on a B-17 with the Sixth Emergency Rescue Squadron on Okinawa in World War II.

In 1952 Ed joined the staff of radio station KWNO in Winona as a radio time salesman. Two years later, he was appointed General Manager of the station and held this position until 1958 when he entered the cable television industry.

Ed built two of the first major broadband cable systems in the country in Winona and LaCrosse, WI, and operated these systems as Vice President and General Manager until their sale in 1964. In 1965 he moved to California, as Operations Manager for all cable television systems then owned by Spencer-Kennedy Labs of Boston.

In 1967 Ed joined Western Communications, Inc. the cable television division of The Chronicle Publishing Company of San Francisco, as its first Vice President and General Manager. In 1972, he assumed the position of President/CEO and later became Chairman of the Board. He retired from the company he founded on March 31, 1988 after 21 years of service with the company.

Just four weeks later, in May of 1988, Ed "retired from retirement" and, with two associates, helped create a brand new California limited partnership, InterMedia Partners, as a cable television investment vehicle for the financial community. He retired for a second time in October of 1991.

During his tenure at Western Communications, Ed became one of the original founders of C-SPAN (Cable Satellite Public Affairs Network).C-SPAN has proven to be one of the most remarkable innovations in the cable industry. C-SPAN today reaches over 77 million subscribers. He served on C-SPAN's board of Directors from 1979-1991 and served as its National Chairman 1982-1984.

In his thirty-plus years in the cable television industry, Ed was continuously active in numerous state and national trade associations. He was elected the National Chairman of the industry's largest trade association, the National Cable Television Association, in 1984

In May of 1978, Ed was the recipient of the most prestigious award in the cable television industry, the Vanguard Award. Cable Television Business magazine selected him as their "Executive of the Year" two times, in 1985 and again in 1991. His impact on the cable television industry will not be soon forgotten.

There will be a memorial service, "Celebration of Life" on Saturday, February 29 at 11 a.m. at Horizon Christian Fellowship, 6365 El Apajo Road, Rancho Santa Fe, CA 92067 (phone: 858-756-5599, fax 858-759-2990). Scattering of ashes will take place.

Mueller, Alfred W.
Alfred W. Mueller, 78, 801 West Sarnia Street, the Chippewa Apartments, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at his home.

He was born on October 22, 1921 in rural Winona, to Adolph and Kate (Aldinger) Mueller, Sr. He attended eight grades at the Martin School, Homer Ridge.

He farmed for twenty years at Witoka, MN. He also worked at Lake Center Switch and was the Plant Manager at the Government Surplus Warehouse.

He married Elsie Janzow at Silo on September 4, 1943. She preceded him in death on December 8, 1994. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Lettner at Goodview Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church on April 11, 1998.

He is a member of Goodview Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a former board member of Sauer Memorial Home.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Wayne (Barbara) Mueller, Oconomowoc, WI, Diane (Eric) Lange, Woodbridge, VA, Ruth (Clarence) Jenkins, Wauwatosa, WI, and Arlene (Harry) Simpkins, Rush City, MN; fourteen grandchildren; fourteen step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lula Jacobs and Alice Klawiter, both of Winona, Natalie Hunt, LeCenter, MN, Dorothy (John) Lau, Eau Claire, WI, Marvin Mueller, San Diego, CA, David (Lucille) Mueller, Madison, WI, Robert E. (Mary) Mueller, Winona; and brother-in-law, Carl Doering, Mankato, MN.

He was also preceded in death by a twin brother, Adolph Jr., brother, Herbert, and sister, Clara Doering.

Funeral services were Saturday, February 26 at Goodview Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Tony Hansen officiating. Burial was in Witoka Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Adam Mueller, Andrew Mueller, John Jenkins, Paul Jenkins, John Lettner and David Jacobs.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Sadowski, Daniel Stanley "Suds", Jr.
Daniel Stanley "Suds" Sadowski, Jr., 54, of 90 Valley Trail Drive, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Daniel, known as Suds, was born August 7, 1945 in Winona, the son of Daniel Stanley and Eileen Bernice (Eaton) Sadowski. He was a graduate of Cotter High School and Winona State University.

Daniel was a retired employee of Winona County Court Services where he served as Director of Court Services for 18 years. Daniel married Linda Eckhoff on February 24, 1978 in Decorah, IA.

He was an avid fan of both local and professional sports and enjoyed cooking. His love and spirit touched everyone he met.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; son, Ben (Dodi) Sadowski, Winona; a daughter, Stacey Sadowski, Winona; grandson, Mat Sadowski; sister, Janet (Dan) Beecher, Eagan, MN; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; Jan Dieter (Ben and Matthew's mother); his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Virgil and Marjorie Eckhoff; and his dog, Abby.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Matthew.

Funeral services were Saturday, February 26 at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Dumke officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were J. Dan, Sean and Dan Beecher, Brad Cutshall, Eric Nelson, Jay and Bill Sadowski, Phil Truax, Jerry Cullinan, Dale Meyer and Steve Larson.

Memorials may be given to the Community Memorial Hospital or to the C&R Unit.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.
