Guy, Nancy Ann (Lester)

Nancy Ann (Lester) Guy, 95, died Friday, March 15, 2002 in Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Seneca, Kansas.

She was born to William and Jessie (Auringer) Lester on April 18, 1906 in Mankato, Minn.

She grew up and went to school in Mankato. She was a nurse for several years. She spent several years in Arizona and in Missouri, then moved back to Winona and Stockton, Minn. for about 15 years. Around 1996 she moved to Axtell, Kansas, and then to Seneca, Kansas, until the time of her death.

She had two children by a previous marriage, a son, Orville Padgett of Seneca, Kansas and a daughter, Loraine Frimood of Brainerd, Minn. She also has fifteen grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Walter Padgett, her second husband, Ernest Guy, five sisters, Maude, Stell, Emma, Mabel, and Rose, a brother, Harold, two grandsons, Glen Padgett and Jery Frimood, a great-granddaughter, Jackie Carner, and a great-grandson, Delbert Davis.

Nancy was loved by everyone who knew her. She will be greatly missed by everyone. Nancy was a wonderful person.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd, Minn., with Pastor Grotzke of First Baptist Church of Baxter, Minn. officiating.

Ferguson, Eugenia J.

Eugenia J. Ferguson, 74, of St. Michael's Nursing Home in Fountain City, Wis., died Friday, March 22, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

She was born February 6, 1928 in LaCrosse, Wis., to Elmer and Angeline H. (Jaskaniec) McClanathan. She married William J. Ferguson. He died in 1998.

After college Gene married and spent 10-1/2 years following her pilot husband around the world with the U.S. Air Force while raising five children. She spent her entire life doing anything and everything for others. After her children started school she did various jobs from secretarial to factory work. A highlight in Gene's life was seeing all her children married and giving to her grandchildren.

Survivors include children, Ruth (Clifford) Preston of Panama City, Fla., Michael (Deborah) Ferguson of Lonsdale, Minn., Patricia (Charles) Buchmiller of Buffalo City, Wis., Kathleen (William) Murphy of Plymouth, Wis., and Mary (Jack) Berry of Modesto, Cal.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a grandchild, David J. Buchmiller.

Private burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Slaggie, Jessie Lenore

Jessie Lenore Slaggie, 94, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Jessie was one of three children born to Edward and Anne (Thompson) Montieth in Blanchardville, Wis. She and her sister Lee (Pearl) moved to Winona in the 1920s where the J.R. Watkins Co. employed them both. On June 27, 1934 she married Leonard A. Slaggie and became a fulltime homemaker and community volunteer.

In addition to raising her family, she was very active in her sons' activities such as Cub Den Mother, Cotter Mothers' Club, chaperone and car pooler. In addition, Jessie loved to volunteer at the hospital, serving in various capacities including serving as Ladies Auxiliary President in 1964. She golfed and bowled for years and her life's passion was playing bridge with her lady friends at Westfield.

Jessie was a devoted member of Serra Club and had served as the club's trustee. She was also a member of the Polish Heritage Society and the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church.

Jessie's parents, husband, Leonard, sister, Lee and brother, Lester preceded her in death.

Jessie is survived by three sons, Tom (Kathy Hovell), Mike, and Steve (Barbara) all of Winona; six grandchildren, David, Bill, Mike, Michelle, Sara and Matt; and three great-grandchildren, Tess, Nick and Madeline Lenore.

A Memorial Mass will be offered at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. John Sauer officiating. Interment of Jessie's cremated body will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials may be directed to the Winona Cotter Band Program or the Winona Community Memorial Hospital Remembrance Fund.

Clark, Emma Margaret

Emma Margaret Clark, 92, of Altura, Minn., died Thursday, March 21, 2002 at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.

Emma was born April 30, 1909 in Waupon, Wis., to Mr. and Mrs. William Langer. She and Lester Clark were married April 7, 1927 in Winona. He died in February 1960.

They worked and farmed in Winona County. In 1957 they moved in to Altura. Emma was a farm homemaker and worked for Altura Turkey Plant for 27 years.

Emma loved the outdoors and enjoyed gardening and fishing.

She was a member of Jehovah Ev. Lutheran Church of Altura.

Survivors include five children, Martin (Sachi) Clark of Altura, Charles (Ruth) Clark of Longview, Tex., David (Cleo) Clark of Rollingstone, Minn., Nancy (Charles) Prigge of North St. Paul, Minn., and Robert (Annette) Clark of Hastings, Minn., and an adopted daughter, Jennifer Ashbeck of Madison, Wis.; thirty-four grandchildren; sixty great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Glen Berry of Zumbro Falls, Minn.; and a sister, Evelyn of Kenosha, Wis.

A son, Earl and a daughter, Vivian have died.

Funeral services were Monday, March 25 at Jehovah Ev. Lutheran Church in Altura with Rev. Michael Lindemann officiating. Burial was in Bethany Moravian Cemetery in rural Altura.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Hoff Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Hemker, Ervin W.

Ervin W. Hemker, 94, of Rt. 2, Winona, died Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Lake Winona Manor.

He was born February 29, 1908 in Bangor, Wis., to Emil and Dora Hemker. He married Margaret Thieke on November 24, 1937 in LaCrescent, Minn. They made their home primarily in the Winona area.

Ervin was a farmer and drove truck throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed farming and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hemker; his two sons, Richard (Judy) Hemker and Robert (Nancy) Hemker, both of Winona; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Private burial will be held at a later date.

Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Paulson, Ruth Catherine

Ruth Catherine Paulson, 91, of Charter House, died Friday, March 22, 2002.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, at Charter House Chapel, with Rev. Diane Harvey of Congregational Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Burmeister, Juliette P. "Dolly"

Juliette P. "Dolly" Burmeister, 78, of 406 High Forest St., died Monday, February 25, 2002 in the Intensive Care Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

Dolly was born May 26, 1923, in Winona, to Bert and Anna (Kropidlowski) Weaver. She graduated from Villa Maria Academy at Frontenac, Minn., in 1941.

Dolly served her country in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943-1946.

She married William C. Burmeister on October 2, 1948 in Winona. He passed away December 22, 1983.

Dolly worked at her family business, Weaver and Sons Paint Store, and Winona Paint and Glass.

She was inducted into the Winona Bowling Hall of Fame in 1980.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church and did volunteer work for Cotter High School.

She is survived by two brothers, Bartlett (Emmerine) Weaver and Norman (Alice) Weaver, both of Winona; former son-in-law, Barry Nudd; ten nieces and nephews, Billye Jean (Randy) Rakstad, Greg (Cheri) Weaver, Chris (Vaunie) Weaver, Matt (Janelle) Weaver, Karen Nixon, Linda Kratz, Janelle (Dan) Appleton, Barb Weaver, Mary Kay (Bill) Maki and Patrice (Mike) Rajkowski; and seventeen great-nieces and nephews.

Dolly was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Susan Nudd, brother, Bill, and sister-in-law, Lucille Weaver.

A Memorial Mass will be held Wednesday, March 20, at 9 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church with Father Daniel Dernek officiating. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Cotter High School or St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

Walch, Michael Edward

Michael Edward Walch, 76, of Altura, Minn., died Saturday, March 16, 2002 at Bryn Mawr Healthcare Center in Minneapolis.

Mike was born February 2, 1926 at Oak Ridge to Edward and Olivia (Schurb) Walch. He and Bernadine Boberg were married September 1, 1952 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Winona. They farmed on the family farm at Oak Ridge for most of their life until retiring and moving in to Altura.

He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Altura.

Survivors include his wife, Bernadine; two daughters, Theresa (Clayton) deVries of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada and Marilyn (Gary) Sanders of Utica; five grandchildren, Jennifer and Holly deVries, Scott (Jill) Sanders, and Sarah and Shawn Sanders; one great-grandson, Peyton Sanders; and a sister, Sister Renata Walch of Assisi Heights, Rochester, Minn.

His parents and a daughter, Mary Ann, preceded him in death.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Altura with Rev. Peter Schuster officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery at Oak Ridge. Friends may call one hour before services at the church.
