Donaldson, Katherine L.

Katherine L. Donaldson, 85, of Avon, Minn., formerly of Winona, died Saturday, March 16, 2002.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 20, at 10 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albany, Minn. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Bublitz, Harvey

Harvey Bublitz, 84, died Friday, March 15, 2002 at Sauer Memorial Home.

He was born August 22, 1917 in Winona, to William and Elizabeth Braatz Bublitz.

He worked for ten years in St. Paul for the Northern-Pacific Railroad. He served his country during World War II in Rhineland and Central Europe. He also worked for Winona Industries.

He purchased the Upper Cedar Valley School for his home.

He is a member of Cedar Valley Lutheran Church and the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9.

He is survived by a son, Paul Bublitz of Spokane, Wash.; two grandchildren, Peter H. and Pamela Bublitz; a brother, Russell (Florence) Bublitz of Rt. 4, Winona; and a sister, Bernice (Willard) Trester of Lewiston, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel with Rev. Kris Fahey officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9 will be in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway, Minn. Visitation will be held Wednesday morning after 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Hughes, James F.

James F. Hughes, 84, of Whitehall, Wis., died Sunday, March 17, 2002 at Tri-County Memorial Nursing Home in Whitehall.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Whitehall, with Rev. LaMoine Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Pigeon Creek Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Pigeon Falls, Wis.

Karakas, Joseph George "Joe"

Joseph George "Joe" Karakas, 84, of St. Charles, Minn., died Monday, March 18, 2002 at Whitewater Healthcare Center in St. Charles.

Joe was born July 4, 1917 in Eveleth to George and Anna Karakas. He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, stationed in the Pacific Theatre. Joe attended Eveleth Junior College and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in education. He later received his Masters degree in counseling from Winona State University.

Joe and Arlene McShane were married August 23, 1947 in Superior, Wis. They made their home in St. Charles where he began teaching in 1956. He taught physics, biology and other sciences, later becoming a school counselor. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, Hugh Watson Post of the St. Charles American Legion, Lions Club, was Secretary of the Winona County Fair Board for ten years, and was a member of the St. Charles Moose Lodge. Joe was named Teacher of the Year in 1968. He loved to garden, bowl, fish, golf and play cards.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; two children, Kathy Johnson of St. Paul, Minn. and Mike Karakas of Richfield, Minn.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Tommy Karakas of Portland, Ore.; and two sisters, Martha Swan and Evelyn Cherne of Eveleth, Minn.

Twin sons, Mark and Christopher, four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

A Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 21 at St.Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with the Revs. Caesar Dralega and James Callahan celebrating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and 8:30-9:30 a.m. Thursday at Hoff Funeral Home's -St. Charles Chapel.

Memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association.

VanGundy, Sara Jo

Sara Jo VanGundy, 21, of Houston, died Friday, March 15, 2002, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis., following an asthma attack. Sara was born on May 28, 1980, in Waterloo, Iowa to Dennis and Janet (Moberly) VanGundy. She lived in Waterloo until shortly after the death of her mother in 1984, when she and her father moved to Houston. Sara graduated from Houston High School in 1998, where she enjoyed participating in sports, and cheerleading. Her interests also included horseback riding, camping, the outdoors, and spending time with her friends and family. Sara especially enjoyed being with the most important person in her life, her seven-month-old son Deven. In the eyes of her family, Sara was a wonderful, caring mother. She worked at various companies in the area, most recently at WinCraft in Winona. Sara is survived by her son, Deven; father: Dennis (Cindy) VanGundy of Houston; paternal grandparents: Harold and Delores VanGundy of Houston; maternal grandmother, Rose Moberly of Waterloo, Iowa; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Her mother, grandfather, Henry Moberly, and uncle, Gary VanGundy, preceded Sara in death. The funeral service was Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial was in the Stone Church Cemetery. The family prefers memorials to Sara's son, Deven.

Arentz, Jeremy

Jeremy Arentz, 27, of Galesville, Wis., died Wednesday, March 6, 2002 in Florida.

Jeremy was born July 2, 1974 in LaCrosse, Wis. He married Sarah Tappendorf on June 21, 1997 at Veterans Memorial Park in West Salem, Wis.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah; their three children, Autumn (8), Austin (4), and Abigail (1-1/2); his parents, Mike Arentz of LaCrosse and Linda Arentz of Holmen, Wis.; brothers, Justin, Joshua, Jarred and Michael; and his grandparents, Gerald and Reva Flick and Mahlun Arentz.

Jeremy lived for the outdoors. He loved to go fishing and boating with his family and had a passion for working on vehicles. He was a loving husband, a wonderful father and a great friend who will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 19 at 11 a.m. at the Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen, Wis. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in the Greenmound Cemetery.

Nelson, Florence A.

Florence A. (Kulas) Nelson, 95, of Winona, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at Lake Winona Manor. She has previously lived at Valley View Tower.

Florence was born September 21, 1906 in Winona, to Mike and Mary (Mizek) Kulas. On June 24, 1925 she married Harold Nelson in Chicago, Ill. He died December 3, 1964.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Church, its St. Ann's Guild, and Harvest House.

Florence was a loving mother and grandmother. She enjoyed baseball, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends. She also enjoyed traveling to visit her children and grandchildren who lived away from Winona. She was a happy and fun-loving individual and enjoyed being with people. In her younger years, she made it a point to be at Gabrych Park for all of the baseball games the PNA and Chiefs played there. Her greatest delight was in attending athletic events in which her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participated.

She worked for many years as a paperhanger and for several years as housekeeper and cook for a few Winona families. One of the many things she will be remembered for is the delicious apple pies she kept her family supplied with.

Florence is survived by four sons, Robert (Mary) of Carnation, Wash., William (Florence) of Winona, Charles (Ginny) of Brighton, Tenn., and Thomas (Peg) of Winona; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a dear sister-in-law, Eleanor Kulas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter, Betty Schwanke, two sisters and eight brothers.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on Saturday, March 16, with her nephew, Rev. Robert Kulas officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Jim, Bill, Ed and Scott Nelson, and grandsons-in-law, Keith Burlingame and John Kurtz.

Mueller, Roland Leonard

Roland Leonard Mueller, 84, of rural Lewiston, Minn., died Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at his home following a short illness.

Roland was born January 25, 1918 in Monticello to Louis and Thusnelda (Luthe) Mueller. His mother died when he was a child and he was raised by his father and stepmother, Beth (Mons) Mueller. He served in the Army Air Force as a Gunnery Instructor during World War II. Roland and Marilyn Klavitter were married on June 17, 1945 at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Wilson, Minn. The couple farmed their entire married lives in Winona County.

Roland was an active member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Lewiston, and especially enjoyed singing in the church choir. He also loved to farm. He had served on the Wyattville Creamery Board, Soil Conservation Board, Lewiston Co-op and Consolidated Breeders Co-op.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; four children, Lowell (Maxine) Mueller and Richard (Ann) Mueller, both of Lewiston, Cynthia (Lyle) Kammerer of Winona, and Marlene (Ken) Schauland of Lewiston; twelve grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and Kenneth (Sheila) Mueller of Lewiston.

A sister, Norma Luehmann preceded him in death.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 16 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Lewiston with Revs. David A. Fischer and Michael A. Lindemann officiating. Burial was in St. John's Cemetery.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.

The family prefers memorials.

Hoff Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Pagel, Minnie Clara

Minnie Clara Pagel, 95, of Winona, died Monday, March 11, 2002 at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.

She was born January 3, 1907 in Winona County, Minn. She never married.

She is survived by nieces and nephews.

Private interment was held in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services assisted with the arrangements.

Reps, Ruby A. (Thoreson)

Ruby A. (Thoreson) Reps, 94, died Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at St. Anne Hospice.

Ruby was born on January 29, 1906 in Fremont Township, Winona County. She married Carl Reps.

She farmed with her husband in Stockton Valley for 34 years. In 1970 they moved to Goodview. Carl preceded her in death in 1970.

She is survived by a daughter, Carlyn (Ken) Tabbert of Monticello, Minn.; granddaughters, Rene (Bruce) MacKissock of Champlin, Minn. and Rhonda (Michael) Anderson of Otsego, Minn; great-grandchildren, Tara MacKissock, and Cole and Kalley Anderson; a brother, Arthur Thoreson of North Carolina; a sister, Alice Whitlock of Arkansas; and sisters-in-law, Moneta, Esther and Mertis Thoreson.

Funeral services were Saturday, November 25 at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel with Rev. Allan Thoreson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Mark, Richard and Jack Thoreson.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.
