He attended school in Caledonia and graduated from Caledonia High School in 1946. Don attended Winona State University one year, then the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 1950 and served his community as a registered pharmacist.

On July 17, 1955, Don married Colene Elton in Canton, Minn. They lived in Caledonia where Don worked for Abbotts Drug Co. since 1948. On April 1, 1960, he purchased the store, which then became Rice Pharmacy.

He was a Scoutmaster and treasurer of the Boy Scouts, president of the Caledonia Commercial Club, president of Caledonia Charities for seven years, and on the board of directors for twenty years. Don was the first president of Houston County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, serving for seven years and was on the board of directors for another 20 years.
