Meyer, Ralph "Sonny" J. Jr.

Ralph (Sonny) J. Meyer Jr., beloved husband of LaVonne (Bonnie) Meyer and father to Donna, Robert and Bonnie, passed away February 23, 2001, after a long courageous six-year battle with cancer, with all his family at his bedside, at 71 years of age. Sonny was a 16-year resident of Dugalla Bay, Oak Harbor, Wash.

Preceded in death by his mother, Agnes (Wysocki), father, Ralph Sr. and brother, William, all of Winona.

Ralph was born March 30, 1929, and raised in Winona. He spent most of his youth hunting, fishing and trapping on the Mississippi River and in the hills throughout the Winona area. He was an early pioneer of the recycling business, also known in his day as junking. This provided him with ample funds for building boats to access his secret spots and to purchase his first car, a truly sweet '47 Chevy. At the age of 15, Sonny cut ice for Yanks Coal and Ice Co. on the Mississippi River and Lake Winona. He then worked tinning cans at the National Can Co. In 1948 he moved into a position at Peerless Chain Co., mostly in the forming and welding department.

He married LaVonne (Bonnie) Guidinger on September 21, 1949. Sonny and his father, Ralph Sr., built his first house above Lock and Dam 5A near Fountain City, Wis. He moved back into Winona and remodeled homes as a private contractor in his spare time. In 1985 he retired and relocated on Whidbey Island, where he said, "It is the next best thing to God's country."

Sonny and Bonnie moved into Dugalla Bay just north of Oak Harbor, Wash., to build their new retirement home with the help of their children. Here he found his favorite hobbies of hunting and fishing required a little different twist on his hunting techniques. He enjoyed deer, duck and pheasant hunting as well as fishing and crabbing with several of his new neighborhood friends and fishing buddies. His son, Robert, and grandson, Jonathan, share his interest in hunting and fishing which made him proud to pass on his secrets. His legacy to his children and friends passed on from his father, will be what he demonstrated so well, "to believe that you can do anything if you try and don't give up." "We will miss you, Dad, but we all know you have found peace with God."

The family requests memorials be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or www.2.stjude.org/support/memorials.htm.
