Knutson, Evelyne

Evelyne Julia Knutson, 78, of 689 East Lake Boulevard, died Monday, March 26, 2001 at her home.

She was born July 29, 1922 in Winona, to Herbert and Catherine (Schade) Kleyla. She married James O. Knutson on February 14, 1975 at Sand Point Naval Air Station, Seattle, Wash. He died October 27, 1998.

She retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Real Estate Division after 35 years, four months and one day of service. Prior to that she worked for one year at the U.S. Navy Household and Personal Effects Pier 91, and two years as a welder for Fentron Steel, Seattle.

She was a member of the Naval Auxiliary, NARF, American Legion Post 168, Cannon Beach, Ore., and the Minnesota Sheriff's Association.

Evelyne is survived by two nephews, Ward (Sylvia) Kleyla of Edmonds, Wash., and Michael (Laurie) Kleyla of Mound, Minn.; and great-nephews, Rick, J.R., Kevin, Ian and Cory.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Jerome, Herbert Jr. and Norman Kleyla.

Evelyne requested that no funeral services be held. Cremation will be followed by burial with her husband at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn. The American Legion will conduct services at the time of burial.

Her wishes were that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Society in Seattle.

Brown, Kassidy Leigh

Kassidy Leigh Brown, stillborn daughter of Dixie Brown and Jason Scrogham of Stockton, died Friday, April 6, 2001, at Winona Community Memorial Hospital due to an umbilical blood clot three weeks prior to full term pregnancy.

She is survived by her parents; a four-year-old brother Dakota and a two-year-old sister Jasmine; uncle, Dean (Laurie) Brown and their three children of Austin, Minn.; great uncle, Charlie Frey of Michigan; and great-grandparents, Blake and Dolores Frey of Michigan.

There was a visitation on Tuesday, April 10, at Hoff Funeral Homes - Lewiston Chapel. Burial followed at the Oakland Cemetery in Stockton.

Kassidy's mother, Dixie would like to thank Dr. Manthey and Staff at Community Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care.

Barr, Wayne M.

Wayne M. Barr, 69, of rural Lewiston, MN, died Thursday, March 16, 2000 at his home.

Wayne M. Barr "Cornstalk" was born to Francis and Rose (Sasse) Barr on November 8, 1930 in Elrod Township, Elrod, SD.

Wayne spent four years in the U.S. Navy, January 17, 1951 to December 21, 1954. When he returned from the service he drove milk truck for Smith and Boether in St. Charles, MN.

On October 14, 1956 he married Margaret E. Himle in Rochester. Together they farmed south of Lewiston from 1956-1986. Wayne was a 4-H leader, President of the Clyd Farm Bureau and the Winona County Farm Bureau. He also served on the Winona County Draft Board for six years. From 1986-1992 he drove semi for Joe and Bob Brink Inc. He also drove fertilizer truck for Rushford Farmers Elevator, hauled corn for Joe Eide, delivered parts for Bob Doerer's Napa Auto Parts of Winona, and was with the Winona County Sheriff's Posse for 25 years.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Terri (Jerome) Hellickson of Caledonia and Joyce Barr of Lewiston; a son, Kevin (Lisa) Barr of Hill City, SD; four grandchildren, Diana and Donald Hellickson and Rhiannon and Dacotah Barr; his father, Francis Barr of Mondovi, WI; one nephew; two nieces; and one brother-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his mother, sister, a niece, and an uncle, Alfred Barr.

Wayne loved his grandchildren and especially loved spending time with them. He also loved to hunt and fish, being outside, working in his garden and working in his shop making lawn ornaments. In his retirement Wayne was able to start fulfilling one of his dreams, which was traveling with his wife and seeing some of this wonderful country. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services are planned for Monday, March 20 at 2 p.m. at Hoff Funeral Homes-Lewiston Chapel with the VFW Donahue-Ham Post 5630 of St. Charles Chaplain, Lowell Hoff officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call on Sunday at the funeral home in Lewiston from 4-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by the St. Charles VFW Post 5630.

Harrington, Genevieve Eve (Losinski)

Genevieve Eve (Losinski) Harrington, 83, of Fox Lake, WI, and formerly of New Hope, MN, died Thursday, March 16, 2000.

She was born January 17, 1917 at St. Philip, MT, to Frank and Anna (Rybarczyk) Losinski. She attended grade school at St. Philip and had advanced education at Great Falls, MT. On October 29, 1942 she married Eugene Harrington at the St. Paul Cathedral.

Survivors are a son, Jim and his wife Nancy (Powley) and grandchildren, Kelli Ann and Kyle Patrick of Fox Lake; brothers, Stanley Losinski of Sun City, AZ, Francis (Dorothy) Losinski and Richard (Ruth) Losinski both of Winona; sisters, Margaret (Joseph) Reiland of Rochester, Ruth Ann (George) Ginther of Racine, WI, and Mary Christ of Minneapolis; and a number of nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Eugene, a sister Cecilia Erdmanczyk, and an infant sister Anna Rose.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church by Monsignor Roy Literski on Tuesday, March 21 at 1 p.m. Interment will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Connaughty, Norman J.

Norman J. Connaughty, 64, of rural Utica, MN, died Monday, March 13, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, MN, following a brief illness.

He was born February 5, 1936 in Utica Township of Winona County to John and Grace (Mundt) Connaughty. Norm attended Saratoga School and St. Charles High School. He married Pauline Nisbit on October 31, 1959 at Lewiston Presbyterian Church.

Norm farmed with Clarence and Vernetta Terveer, and Lyman and Bert Dyar. He then worked for Kepp Construction, installing underground telephone lines. He later worked for Frazier Construction, Badger Sewer and Water, and Rochester Sand and Gravel as a backhoe and shovel operator. In the fall of 1979 Norm started his own business, Connaughty Backhoe Service.

He was a member of the Operating Engineers 49ers Union. He was a member and Elder of Pioneer Presbyterian Church of Chatfield, MN.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline; three brothers, Robert (Jeanette) Connaughty of Chatfield, MN, Keith (Marilyn) Connaughty of Lanesboro, MN, and Tom (Mary) Connaughty of Eyota, MN; and three sisters, Harriet (LaVaine) Parsons of Winona, Noreen (Sheldon) Plath of Greenfield, and Jacqueline (Delbert) Hendershot, Rochester, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Funeral services were Thursday, March 16 at Pioneer Presbyterian Church in Chatfield, MN, with Rev. Richard Jones officiating. Burial was in Saratoga Cemetery.

Clark, Martha L.

Martha L. Clark, 93, 2043 50th Street NW, Rochester, MN, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000 at Maple Manor Nursing Home.

She was born December 16, 1906 in Rice County, MN. She married Scott Clark on March 28, 1927 in Winona. He died March 22, 1979.

Martha grew up in St. Charles, MN, where she was a 1925 graduate of St. Charles High School. She and her husband farmed in West Albany Township, Wabasha County. After retirement she resided in Lake City until 1990, when she moved to Rochester.

She was a homemaker, and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons, James Clark of Rochester and Scotty Clark of Winona; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Vivian J. Wille of Winona.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, and four sisters.

Funeral services were Saturday, March 18 at Bethany United Methodist Church in Rochester with Rev. Mark Woodward officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, St. Charles, MN.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Ranfranz Funeral Home of Rochester assisted the family with the arrangements.

Gueltzow, Sister Barbara

Sister Barbara Gueltzow, 68, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minn., who served as an educator, died in a car accident on February 9, 2001 in Littleton, Colo.

Born Barbara Jeanne Gueltzow on June 20, 1932 in Winona, Minn., Sister Barbara entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1949 from Holy Trinity Parish, Rollingstone, Minn. She made profession of vows in 1952 and began her teaching ministry at St. Augustine Parish, Austin, Minn. She also taught at Easton, Minn., Chicago, Ill., and Portsmouth, Ohio.

From 1978 to the present she ministered in Colorado: 1978-82 Thornton, Colo., Holy Cross Parish; 1982-85 Denver, Colo., St. Vincent de Paul Parish; 1988-2000 Littleton and Denver, teaching at Our Lady of Lourdes School. Sister Barbara celebrated her silver jubilee in 1977.

Sister Barbara is survived by her Franciscan Community and by one brother, Donald Gueltzow of Savage, Minn.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, February 16 in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes at Assisi Heights with Rev. Jack Krough officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Franciscan Fund, Assisi Heights, 1001-14th St. NW, Rochester, MN 55901.

Murray, Floretta M.

Floretta M. Murray, 91, of 65 West Lake Blvd., died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at the Watkins Home.

She was born in Winona on July 18, 1909, the daughter of Timothy W. and Fleurette Schneller Murray.

Floretta began teaching art at Phelps School in 1932. In 1941 she was transferred to Winona State University, where she also served as department head, and is credited with developing both a B.A. degree and a master's degree program.

She also taught at the University of Minnesota, Bemidji State University, St. Mary's College and the College of St. Teresa. Her teaching career brought her many honors and distinctions, including the WSU Distinguished Alumni Award and inclusion in Who's Who in the Midwest, in Education, and the International Biography. Her biography also is in the Archives of the Minnesota State Historical Society.

Floretta's professional career also included many speaking engagements and active participation in professional art and education organizations. She was a charter member of the Women Artists of America, served as an evaluator for the North Central Association of Secondary Schools, and a member of the American Association of University Professors.

Local organizations have also benefited from Floretta's membership, including Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, where she organized the Art Cart, Winona Little Theater Group, the Winona County Historical Society, Winona Art Center, Ruskin Club, Winona State University Foundation, Winona Heritage Association, and Friends of the Library. She has served as a trustee of Central Methodist Church, and was a member of the Winona City Planning Commission.

Her work is in a number of private collections in Minnesota, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Michigan, California, Washington and Kansas, as well as the prestigious Benjamin and Abby Grey Foundation, the Charles B. Sweatt Collection, and a mural in the United Building Center's administrative offices.

She was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Winona.

Survivors include several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mae Murray.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 19 at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Hurmence officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Dr. Wayne Kelly, Wayne Dunbar, Kent Espy and William Koutsky.

Memorial gifts are preferred.
