Janikowski, Laverna C.

Laverna C. Janikowski, 92, formerly of 772 West Broadway and presently a resident of the Watkins Home, died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at the nursing home.

She was born February 26, 1908 in Kalona, IA. to George M. and Dora P. (Lemley) Schmitt. She married Daniel B. Janikowski on May 25, 1946 in Winona. He died January 20, 2000.

Prior to her retirement, Laverna was employed at F.W. Woolworth Co. for 35 years. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish.

She is survived by a sister, Cleda Breske of Winona; and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Saturday, April 1 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with Rev. Robert G. Meyer officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harley Antoff, Scott Antoff, Dave Wooden, John Wooden, Bob Wooden and Tom Wooden.

Rettkowski, Frances A.

Frances A. Rettkowski, 84, formerly of 578 East Fifth St., died Wednesday, March 29, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born October 18, 1915 in Dodge, WI. She and her late husband, Frederick R. had three children.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, April 4, from 6-8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. Christian Wake Service Tuesday at the Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.

Swartling, Ronald J.

Ronald J. Swartling, 67, Winona, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000 at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire, WI.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 1 at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau, WI. Burial with full military honors was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Cook, Shirley E.

Shirley E. Cook, 73, of Rt. 1, Box 143A, Winona, died Thursday, March 30, 2000 at her home.

She was born September 16, 1926 in Winona to James and Agnes (Gospadar) McGuire. She married Gerald J. Cook on June 1, 1946 in Winona.

She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Parish in Minnesota City, MN, the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and Eagles Auxiliary of which she was past president, past district president, "Mother of the Year" and "Grandmother of the Year."

Survivors include her husband, Gerald of Winona; four sons, Michael Cook, Austin, MN, Richard (Louise) Cook and Steve (Rose) Cook, both of Stockton, MN, and Jeffery (Dean) Cook, Lewiston, MN; a daughter, Debbie (James) Remlinger, Jr., Winona; fifteen grandchildren: Kris, Michael, Tabitha, David, Dawn, Dana, Travis, Diana, Ashley, Rebecca, Kesala, Dalton, Jim III, Tammy and Tanya; ten great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jerome McGuire, Minneapolis, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, April 3 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Minnesota City, with Rev. Edward Cunningham, O.M.I. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 3-7 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home, and on Monday from 10-11 a.m. at the church. There will be an Eagles Auxiliary service at 6 p.m. and recitation of the rosary at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Travis Cook, Trevor Rasmussen, David Nowlan, Scott Brown, Damon Dais and James Remlinger III.

Selke, Gordon K.

Gordon K. Selke, 68, Goodview, MN, passed away Friday, March 17, 2000 at the Sauer Memorial Home after returning from his winter Texas vacation.

Gordon was born in Pickwick, MN, to Victor and Viola (Albrecht) Selke on November 11, 1931. He attended country grade school and graduated from Winona Senior High in 1949, where he lettered in football, baseball and wrestling. He married Jean Blank on August 26, 1950 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Winona.

He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953 and received the Presidential Award for Heroism on December 19, 1952, "The Soldiers Medal."

He is a graduate of Winona State University with a B.A., B.S., and a Master's Degree in Business Education and a minor in geography.

Gordon taught for three years in Sparta, WI, and then for 25 years in Winona School District 861. He also coached wrestling and track and could be seen refereeing many wresting matches around the area. He retired from teaching in 1992.

He is a 32-year member of the Winona Elks Lodge No. 327, where he is a Past Exalted Ruler, Past District Deputy and past treasurer for the lodge. He was appointed Minnesota State Elks Chaplain for the 1999-2000 year and served as the World War II Memorial Chairman for the State Elks Association for 1999-2000.

Gordon is a 23-year member and past president of the Goodview Activity Group, past assistant gambling manager and was very proud of the Goodview community he lived in. He also served on the Michael LaCanne Park Committee.

He is a two-time past chapter president of the Winona Area Barbershoppers and sang with many quartets, the last being "The Misterssippi's." He was the 1999 Person of Hope for the eighth annual Rivertown Shuffle with a message about "attitude" and living with cancer.

Gordon was a great outdoors person. He loved sports, hunting, fishing, camping, and traveled all of the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Nova Scotia ad Mexico.

He is a member of the YMCA, Trout Unlimited, life member of the National Education Association, American Legion Post No. 9, Winona, and life member of the Winona State W Club.

He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and sense of humor. He was a friend to all who knew him.

Gordon is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter, Kelly (Selke) Marino of Winona; a brother, Kermit Selke and friend Linda Hoialmen of Winona; nieces, Cindy Williams of Goodview and Pam Going of Crystal, MN; and nephews, Kim Selke of Winona, Todd Selke of Irmo, SC, and Monty Ronnenberg of Winona.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Jane Ronnenberg, an infant brother, and a niece, Tammy Whetstone.

Funeral services were Monday, March 20 at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Lora Sturm of Ridgeway United Methodist Church, Ridgeway, MN officiating. Burial was in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway, where members of American Legion Post No. 9 conducted military rites.

Casketbearers were Elks officers, Robert Stein, Brian Ernst, Thomas Lilla, John Burdick, James Pampuch and Terry Moore.

Honorary casketbearers were members of the Goodview Activity Group.

A memorial is being arranged.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Rolbiecki, Heather Lynn

Heather L. Rolbiecki, 17, of Lake City, MN, died Saturday, March 18, 2000, in a car accident outside of Red Wing, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 22 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. James Russell officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Newman, Mary P.

Mary P. Newman, 92, formerly of 128 St. Charles St., died Monday, March 20, 2000 at St. Anne Hospice.

She was born February 9, 1908 in Winona to John and Julia (Rompa) Paszkiewicz. She married Alois V. Newman on May 9, 1932 in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, Winona. He died August 29, 1977.

Mary was employed at Winona Knitting Mills until her retirement in 1970.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, VFW Auxiliary and St. Casimir's Society.

Survivors include a sister, Anna Buse of Winona; a sister-in-law, Marge Paskiewicz, Winona; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Genevieve Glowczewski and Frances Berger, and three brothers, John, Hubert and Ben Paskiewicz.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 22 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with Rev. Robert G. Meyer and Msgr. Roy E. Literski concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until time of Mass at the church.

Pallbearers will be Fred Buse, Bill Glowczewski, Greg Paskiewicz, Steve Modjeski, John Schneider and Jim Schneider.

Memorials may be directed to St. Anne Hospice and Adith Miller Manor.

McCabe, James William

James William McCabe, 89, of 1801 Edgewood Road, Winona, and currently wintering in Mesa, AZ, died Monday, March 20, 2000 at a Mesa, AZ hospice.

He was born January 26, 1911 in Arcadia, WI.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Katherine (VonWald) McCabe; and a daughter.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 28 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday, March 27 at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, and after noon on Tuesday at the funeral home. There will be a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
