Edstrom, Everett Leonard

Everett (Ev) Edstrom died March 19, 2000 at his home in Palm Desert, CA.

He was born December 12, 1915 in Worthington, MN, the son of Ernest and Lelsa Edstrom. He married Mary Jean Cronen of Mapleton, MN.

After graduation from Winona State College, Ev began touring with his band, The Hal Leonard Orchestra. It achieved national prominence and was featured on network radio broadcasts before World War II intervened.

In 1947 Ev, Harold, and Roger Busdicker, a college buddy and fellow musician, founded Hal Leonard Publishing. Under their management it became the largest print music publisher in the world. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Walt Disney Films, Woody Herman, and most other international music figures are included on its roster.

Other successful businesses started by the brothers included Edstrom Photo Studio, Edstrom Music, Edstrom Telephone and Sound, and Edstrom Realty.

In 1998 Ev and Mary moved permanently to Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert. This was a result of both Ev's love of warm weather and the effects of a stroke he suffered January 1, 1997. The ongoing effects of the stroke caused his death.

Ev is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters, Pat of Palos Verde Estates, CA, KRS of Los Angeles, CA, Kate and son-in-law Marshall Brand of Edina, and Kim of LaJolla and San Francisco, CA; son, Steve of San Francisco; granddaughters, Taylor, Los Angeles, CA and Skylor, Palos Verdes Estates, CA; and great-grandson, Anthony of Los Angeles.

Ev was President of the Winona Country Club and was one of the principals involved in expanding the course from nine to 18 holes.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Ev Edstrom Youth Golf Program to assist aspiring young golfers. (Call WCC Head Pro Bill McCaskill).

Pfeiffer, Charles Lloyd

Charles Lloyd Pfeiffer was born Nov. 5, 1926, in Winona to Loyde and Marian Pfeiffer. He died Jan. 14, 2001, in Bandon, Oregon.

He married June Peterson, the love of his life, in 1948. Their first home was a small log cabin in Winona. After retirement, they devoted much time and attention to the creation of a beautiful log home in Bandon, where they eventually moved. This home is a testimony of the love they held for life and each other.

The intervening years were filled with family, church and work activities. While the family was young, camping trips were a highlight of the year, as were trips to Winona to visit family. Charlie had the heart of an artist; arranging flowers, landscaping, and woodworking were his avocations. His death is a time of both mourning and celebration for those who shared in his life. He will be missed.

Charlie began his career with the Pfeiffer Nursery in 1946. At that time, it was the largest retail mail order nursery in Minnesota. The operation included 50 acres of gladiolus. The gladiola became his signature flower, ones that he used in flower arrangements in all his children's weddings. After 10 years in the family nursery, he changed course and returned to school.

He pursued an academic career for the next 15 years, achieving his doctorate in 1966 from Purdue University. He then taught and performed research at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., until 1970. At this point he joined a private consulting firm, Soil and Plant Laboratories, in Bellevue, Wash., where he worked until his retirement in 1988. Among his accomplishments was the formation of the Washington State Greenhouse Management Institute.

Charlie was also active in the U.S. Navy during World War II. At the age of 18, he served as a fireman, first class, aboard the USS CHUB, a submarine stationed in the Philippines.

Charlie is survived by his wife, June Carol Pfeiffer of Bandon; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Nina Pfeiffer of Alexandria, VA.; daughters and sons-in-law, Chris and Ken Fee of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Sue and Eric Johnson of Seattle, Sara and Jeff Olsgaard of Billings, Mont., Carla and Frank Lotshaw of Seattle, and Lisa and Gary Hutchison of Kamiah, Idaho; sister, Elizabeth Ann Steinson of Omaha, Neb.; stepsisters, Ruth Jozwiak of Los Angeles and Shirley Macemon of Versailles, KY.; and grandchildren, Evan Pfeiffer of Alexandria, Jeremy Fee of Wheatridge, Co., Ken Fee Jr. of Roswell, GA., & Chuck Fee of Huntington Beach, Cal., Pat, Sam, & Colin Johnson of Seattle, Jens, Nora, & Kjersten Olsgaard of Billings, Phillip & April Lotshaw of Seattle, and Nathan & Davy Hutchison of Kamiah.

Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Marian Gertrude (Coleman) Pfeiffer, Loyde Eugene Pfeiffer, and his stepmother Ruth (Davis Darrow) Pfeiffer.

A memorial service for Charles was held on Friday, Jan. 19, at Faith Lutheran Church in Coquille, Oregon. Private interment will be in Minnesota. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 60647, Chicago, Ill. 60618.

Zaudke, Annath G. (Campbell)

Annath was born in St. Charles on March 18, 1914, to Edward and Jesse (Buffam) Campbell. In 1941 she graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing and from that point on, nursing was a major part of her life. She joined the U.S. Navy and nursed as an Ensign at Corona Naval Base in California during World War II. After the war, Annath moved back to St. Charles and then relocated to Kansas. Annath married Elmer Zaudke on June 9, 1945. In 1951 they moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where she worked at the AT & SF Hospital until her retirement. She also lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Elmer died in 1982. Annath returned to St. Charles in 1990.

Annath belonged to Christ Lutheran Church in Albuquerque and St. Matthew Lutheran in St. Charles. She was a member of the Lutheran Mission Women's League. She participated in the Santa Fe Women's Club and was a charter member of the Women in Service Memorial in Washington, D.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer and a sister, Mae Miller.

Dernek, Richard J. Sr.

Our father, Richard John Dernek Sr., 94, died Monday, January 22, 2001, in the C&R Unit of Winona Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born to John and Martha (Kamin) Dernek in their family home on September 8, 1906. With the guidance of his parents, he was baptized into the Catholic Christian community at St. John Nepomucene Church in Winona and attended its parochial school. His secondary education was at Cotter High School, where he played football, baseball, basketball, and worked at the Hurry Back Recreational Center. After graduating in 1924, he worked in the office of O'Brien Lumber Company for four years. Pursuing a career, he attended Coyne Electrical Institute in Chicago.

In 1928 he began his employment with MVPS Company, which eventually became NSP. He retired in 1971, completing 43 years of service.

On September 20, 1932, he married Bernadine Susan Kukowski at St. Casimir's Church in Winona. Together with the spirit of God, their love created three children, Daniel, Geraldine and Richard. The quality of that love lives on in their offspring, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

With his wife, Bernadine, they enjoyed bowling, playing cards and outings with their friends. He was a member of the Winona Civic Group, Redmen's Club, Knights of Columbus, and since 1926, has been a member of the Winona Athletic Club, listed as the second oldest member.

Retirement from NSP gave our parents more time to be present to each other and their family. The purchase of a houseboat intensified the togetherness of family. Beaching the craft on sandbars, fishing with the wire-line cane-poles on the wingdams and sitting around the glowing campfire after a beautiful sunset brought a wholeness out into the family even in the midst of many challenges.

Our father is preceded in death by his wife, Bernadine; a grandson, Daniel; parents; three brothers, Leonard, Joseph and John; and one sister, Esther.

He has one living brother, Arthur, a retired fireman, who resides in Winona.

We are grateful to all who befriended our parents during their earthly journey. We appreciate the care given to our father by the community of employees at Winona Community Memorial Hospital, and we are blessed by those who comfort us as we release with love, our dad into the Eternal Presence, the image in which he was created.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 25, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. Interment will be in the family plot at St. Mary's Cemetery.

His sons, The Revs. Daniel R. and Richard J. Dernek, will officiate.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m., closing with the recitation of the rosary, on Wednesday, January 24, at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home, and from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass Thursday at the church.

Pallbearers will be Michael Pellowski, Jerome Cordes, Robert Schaefer, Richard McElmury, Michael McElmury and Brent Millard.
