Stender, Harold G.

Harold G. Stender, 84, of 716 Harriet St., died Wednesday, January 24, 2001 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born on May 20, 1916 in Winona County, to William and Theresa (Schultz) Stender. He married Arlene Rupprecht on March 3, 1946 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Corporal stationed in the South Pacific.

He was employed by Botsford Lumber Co., now UBC, as a cabinet maker and shop foreman for twelve and a half years, after which he started Stender's Cabinet Service, retiring in 1981.

He was a member of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council and Building & Grounds Committee. He was a member of Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9, and the carpenter's union.

Survivors include his wife, Arlene; a son, Wayne (Sherry) Stender of Winona; a daughter, Linda (Steven) Wall of Eden Prairie; grandchildren, Mark (Staci) Stender, Annette (Joseph) Zittel, Nathan Stender, Andrew, Chris and Katie Wall; great-grandchildren, Emily, Kathrine and William Stender; and two step-grandchildren, Michael Reissy and Cathy Carlson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Arthur, and a sister, Vera Ebert.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 27, at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Revs. Oliver H. Lindholm and James Nelson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery where military rites were conducted by the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9.

Casketbearers were Mark Stender, Annette Zittel, Nathan Stender, and Andrew, Chris and Katie Wall.

Memorials may be directed to St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Glowczewski, Susan

Susan Glowczewski, 61, of 613 East Belleview St., passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, January 24, 2001, with all of her family by her side.

She was born April 1, 1939 in Rollingstone, Minn., to Alois and Veronica (Arnoldy) Rivers. She married William H. Glowczewski on November 15, 1958, in Rollingstone.

She was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish, Winona, and Women's Bowling Association for 40 plus years. She was a top honor bowler and was elected to the Women's Bowling Hall of Fame on February 26, 2000. She was a member of the Westfield Golf Club and its Wednesday night league.

Together with her husband, she owned and operated the Lakeview Drive Inn since 1977. She loved to cook for the many people that frequented the Drive Inn as well as for her family. Sue was a loving wife and a great mother and grandmother. She was blessed with four grandchildren who were the light of her life. She had a tremendous attitude, always positive and vibrant until the very end of her life. She touched a lot of people's lives and will be missed by many.

She is survived by her husband, William of Winona; two sons, Timothy (Kathy) and John (Jennifer), both of Winona; four grandchildren, Michael, Hannah, Allyson and Haley; mother, Veronica Rivers of Rollingstone; two sisters, Virginia "Ginny" Lehnertz of Rollingstone and Kay Danielson of Onalaska, Wis.; and one brother, Alan (Lisa) Rivers of Des Moines, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her father.

A Memorial Mass was offered on Saturday, January 27, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Scott Mlynczak, Todd Tarras, Tom Wieczorek, Russ Prenot, Tom Paskiewicz and Scott Hazelton.

Memorials may be directed to Winona Area Hospice Service.

Thomas, Sandra Sue

Sandra Sue Thomas, 39, Kasson, MN, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at her home in Kasson, following a two year battle with cancer.

Sandra was born September 20, 1960 in Winona to Gary and Louise (Rauen) Speltz. She was raised on the family farm at Oak Ridge in rural Altura and graduated from Lewiston-Altura High School in 1978. In 1981 she graduated from Rochester Community College with a degree in Executive Secretarial. Sandra and Wally Thomas were married on July 31, 1982 at Oak Ridge. They lived in Winder and Wahpeton, North Dakota where she operated a day care. In 1990 they moved to Albert Lea where she worked as a secretary and office manager for a law firm. In 1998 they moved to Kasson.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Kasson.

Survivors include her husband, Wally; two sons, Chris and Dan, both at home; her mother, Louise Speltz of Altura; three brothers, Kevin (Nancy) Speltz of St. Joseph, MO, Keith (Theresa) Speltz of Altura, and Kenneth Speltz of Hudson, WI; two sisters, Amy (Bruce) Dickerson of Hudson, WI, and Ellen (Todd) Prill of Chippewa Falls, WI; and her maternal grandmother, Marie Rauen of Adams.

She was preceded in death by her father, Gary in 1998, an infant sister in 1962, paternal grandparents, and her maternal grandfather.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, March 10 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Rollingstone, MN, with Revs. Edward McGrath and Charles Collins officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Oak Ridge.

Pallbearers were Ken, Kevin and Keith Speltz, Brian and Brad Thomas, and Todd Prill.

Memorials are preferred to the Partnership for a Drug Free America.

Hoff Funeral Home assisted the family with the arrangements.

Andrus, Robert W.

Robert Wiley "Bob" Andrus, 85, of Burnside Road, Manteo, NC, died February 28, 2000 at his home.

Bob was born in Council Bluffs, IA, on April 13, 1914. He received a B.S. degree in Music Education and a master's degree in music at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He taught music for four years in Iowa, married Rosalyn Venrick, then during World War II spent two years in the U.S. Air Force Band in Alamogordo, NM. The next 30 years were spent as band director at Winona High School, and head of that department for part of that time.

Following retirement in 1977, Bob and Rosalyn moved to the Outer Banks where his son, Steve, had an art gallery. Their son Paul joined soon after to build their home on Roanoke Island.

Bob started a youth band at Kitty Hawk Elementary School and substituted in band for a number of years. He was a member of the Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and sang in the church choir for over 20 years.

Mr. Andrus is survived by his wife, Rosalyn Andrus of the residence; two sons, Paul Andrus, a contractor, and his wife and three children of Kitty Hawk, and Steve Andrus of Taos, NM, who has his own art gallery there.

Memorial services were held at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church on Sunday, March 5, with Rev. George Speake officiating.

Memorials may be given to the Manteo High School Band, c/o Janice Tillett, Dare County Board of Education, P.O.Box 640, Manteo, NC 27954.

Jenkinson, Frieda M.

Frieda M. Jenkinson, 90, of the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, died Monday, January 15, 2001 at the C&R Unit.

She was born September 21, 1910 in Winona County to Frank A. and Lena M. (Senn) Miennert. On November 22, 1928 Frieda married Bernard E. Jenkinson in Ridgeway, Minn. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1978.

Frieda retired in 1975 after working for W.T. Grant and Co. in Winona for 20 years. She is a member of Ridgeway United Methodist Church, Ridgeway, Minn.

Survivors are daughters, Shirley Frickson of Houston, Minn. and Judy (Frank) McCray of Woodbury, Minn.; a son-in-law, Alton Blumentritt of Ridgeway; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Helen Henderson of Houston, Minn.

Frieda was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two daughters, Beverly Jean and Inez, two grandchildren, a son-in-law, Richard Frickson, three brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 18, at Ridgeway United Methodist Church, with Rev. Kathy Arnold officiating. Burial will be in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway.

Friends may call on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, then on Thursday from noon to time of services at the church.

A memorial is being arranged.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.

Barr, Francis

Francis Archie Barr, 94, of Mondovi, Wis., passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2001 at the American Lutheran Home in Mondovi.

Francis was born December 13, 1906 in Pierre, So. Dak., to George and Alice (Waby) Barr. He married Rose Sasse on April 24, 1930. She died March 13, 1975.

Throughout his life, Francis farmed, in South Dakota during the Depression, and afterwards in Minnesota, until his retirement. At that time he moved to St. Charles, Minn.

Francis married Esther Weber of Mondovi, on December 10, 1977. For seventeen years the couple wintered in Donna, Tex.

Francis is survived by his wife, Esther; his stepchildren, Iris (Ralph) Baudendistel, Joan (Leroy) Heck, and Sara (Norbert) Piotrowski, all of Mondovi, and Archie (LaVonne) Burlingame of Eau Claire, Wis.; six grandchildren: Leisa Rockstad, Leslie Fix, Greg Fix, Terri (Jerome) Hellickson of Caledonia, Minn., Joyce Barr of Lewiston, Minn., and Kevin (Lisa) Barr of Hill City, So. Dak.; ten great-grandchildren; fifteen step-grandchildren; and thirty-four step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, a granddaughter, Shelly, daughter, Maxine, and son, Wayne.

Services will be held at Hoff Funeral Home St. Charles Chapel on Wednesday, January 17, at 2 p.m., with visitation starting at noon.

Hoff Funeral Home-St. Charles Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Scheevel, Frances

Frances Scheevel, 82, of rural Chester, Iowa, died Sunday, January 14, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 17 at Greenleafton Reformed Church in Greenleafton, Minn. Burial will be in Greenleafton Cemetery.
