Randall, Candice Rae

Candice Rae Randall, 54, of 859 East Wabasha St., died Monday, April 1, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born February 22, 1948 in Winona, to Gerald and Ruth Haedtke Tarras.

She graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1966. She attended Winona Vocational Technical College.

She worked for the Winona Knitting Mills, Riverside Electronics and provided in-home day care.

She married Donald Johns on September 3, 1966 in Winona. They were later divorced. She married Curtis Clark Randall on July 21, 1995 in Winona. He is deceased.

She is a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

She will be sadly missed by her friend, Harold Strelow; daughters, Lisa (Jerry) Brown of Winona and Mary (Tim) Fitzgerald of Indianapolis, Ind.; her son, William (Leslie) Johns of Winona; grandchildren, Spenser and Madyson Brown, Kaytee Ann Johns and Zachary Scott Fitzgerald; sisters, Connie (John) Styba of Winona and Renee (Peter) Dietzel of Maitland, Fla.; nephews, Andrew, Ryan and Collin Dietzel; half-sister, Jeri "Sue" (Chuck) Peterson of Winona; half-brothers, Keith (Sue) Tarras and Bill (Mary) Tarras both of Winona; stepchildren, Cathy (Phil) Keller of Winona and Roger (Mary) Randall of Plymouth; stepgrandchildren, Sara and Clark Randall; sister-in-law, Barbara (Glenn) Morcomb of Mesa, Ariz.; and stepnieces, Janice and Judy Ratsch of Minneapolis.

Candice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Curtis Clark Randall, her father, Gerald Tarras, mother and stepfather, Ruth and Marv Giverson, and sister-in-law, Doris Finley.

Candee enjoyed her grandchildren, arts and crafts, mystery books, nature and life.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 5, at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, with Rev. Mark Dumke officiating. Burial will be in Fremont Scotch Cemetery.

Active casketbearers will be David Loberg, Bruce Rogne, Dave Holland, Tom Hanson, Ron Phillips and Paul Michael Prinzing.

Honorary casketbearers will be Randy Haedtke, Jim Breza and Tony Fitzgerald.

Visitation will be Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home and on Friday at the church after 1 p.m.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Rukavina, Daniel George

Daniel George Rukavina, 89, of St. Anne Nursing Home, Winona, died Monday, April 1, 2002 at St. Anne.

He was born April 13, 1912 in Chisholm, Minn., the son of Daniel and Cecelia (Hocivar) Rukavina.

He is a graduate of St. Cloud Teacher's College in 1938. His first employment was with the National Youth Administration, then he taught high school at Greenway, Minn. from 1939-1942. Dan entered the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II as an airborne radar technician, attaining the rank of sergeant. His service took him to Guam, Okinawa, China (Peiping and Tanku) and also to Pearl Harbor, before being discharged in December of 1945. Dan then worked for U.S. Steel in Coleraine and Virginia, Minn. for 28-1/2 years, retiring as a supervisor.

He married Clara M. Schleinitz at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Meadowlands, Minn. on November 19, 1933.

Dan is a past member of the Coleraine Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post. He was a fan and supporter of the Winona Cotter boys tennis team and the local Bosnian community. He had been a resident of Callista Court in Winona before entering St. Anne Nursing Home on March 21 of this year.

Dan was a faithful visitor and caregiver to his wife of 68 years, Clara, who still resides at St. Anne Nursing Home. He is also survived by two sons, Daniel (Patricia) of Winona and Max (Charlene) of Loudon, Tenn.; a daughter-in-law, Betsy Rukavina of Sister Bay, Wis.; twelve grandchildren, Dan (Linda) Rukavina, Lynn (Mark) Myhra, Lori (Bill) Hodapp, John (Amy) Rukavina, Marian (Miguel) Diaz, Cathy and Tony Rukavina, Mike (Cheri) Rukavina, Judy (Rob) Palm, Katie Skelton, Jenny (Brad) Pittam and Jason Rukavina; twenty-two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rose Pocrnich of Hibbing, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Tony, three brothers and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, April 4, at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Preliminary service will be at 12:30 p.m. at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, 1476 West Broadway, Winona. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 3 from 5-8 p.m. where there will be a prayer service at 6 p.m. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Casketbearers are Dan, John, Tony, Jason and Mike Rukavina and Dave Arnold.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to St. Anne Foundation, 1347 West Broadway, Winona, or Winona Health Foundation (Community Memorial Hospital), 855 Mankato Avenue, Winona.

Nichols, Gladys Lucille

Gladys Lucille Nichols, 91, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at Lake Winona Manor.

Gladys was born August 9, 1910 to George and Bessie Nichols in Saratoga, Minn. She attended Winona Normal School and received her teaching degree in 1931. Gladys taught school in New Hartford and Ridgeway schools. She also worked at Watkins for 28 years, retiring on December 31, 1972.

Gladys is survived by one brother, Thomas Nichols of Chatfield, Minn.; cousins; special friends and special relatives.

Her parents, a sister, Lilah, and two brothers, Hubert and Leander preceded her in death.

Funeral services were Monday, April 1, at Hoff Funeral Home-St. Charles Chapel, with Chaplain Kathy Redig officiating. Burial was in Saratoga Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steve Hogden, Dean Neumann, Allen Larson, Tom Biermann, Kerry Sackreiter and Dan Groth.

Honorary pallbearers were Everett Nichols, Clifford Biermann, Kent Sackreiter, Don Nicholas, Steve Groth, Gary Groth, Jeff Hogden, Doug Hogden, Jim Bateman and David Bateman.

Hoff funeral Home- St. Charles Chapel assisted with the arrangements.

Laufenburger, Ervin R.

Ervin Ray Laufenburger, 86, of 1116 Gilmore Avenue, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at his home.

He was born in Wilson, Minn., on June 6, 1915 to Ray and Rosa (Hoppe) Laufenburger. He married Lois M. Fitting on June 10, 1941 in the parsonage of McKinley United Methodist Church in Winona.

Erv is a lifelong Winona area resident, living in Wilson and Witoka for five years, then 21 years in Stockton where he farmed with his parents and also worked for Stockton Elevator for three years. He then worked for five years at Winona Flower and Feed until he entered the Winona Fire Department on January 1, 1942. He served on the Winona Fire Department for 38-1/2 years, the last 14 as its Chief. After retiring, he drove funeral coach for Winona-LaCrosse Coach Service for another 10 years.

He is a member of McKinley United Methodist Church, where he has served on its Board, its Commission, was head usher for many years and served on its Finance Committee.

He is also a member of Winona Masonic Lodge #18, A.F. & A.M., of which he is a past master; Osman Temple of Shrine; York Rite; Scottish Rite; Tyrian Council #2; Winona Chapter #5, Royal Arch Masons; Coeur De Lion, Commandry #3; member and secretary of the Hiawatha Chapter of the Low Twelve Club and other Masonic Bodies; member and past patron of Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #141, Winona; Winona County Old Settlers; AARP; American Red Cross, contributing many gallons of blood; life member of the Minnesota Fire Chiefs' Association; Winona County Historical Society; Pickwick Mill Association; Westfield Club Club; was a member of the Board of Directors of Woodlawn Cemetery Association; a past member and president of the Kiwanis Club of Winona; Winona Civic Association; and past member and Sachem of Redmen Tribe #20, Winona.

Erv is survived by his wife, Lois; a brother, Earl (Ollie) of Winona; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Laufenburger of Chaska, Minn.; two aunts, Linda Laufenburger of Winona and Esther Schaller of Galesville, Wis.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roger and Arthur.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Shirley Duncanson of McKinley United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Money Creek Cemetery, Money Creek, Minn. Members of the Winona Fire Department will honor Erv's memory with a fire engine escort to his final resting place.

Friends may call Wednesday, from noon to time of services at the church.

Casketbearers are Bruce, Dennis, Donald and Robert Laufenburger, Jack Haugen and Gary Burau.
Honorary casketbearers will be the Winona Fire Department.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the Dialysis Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, the Elevator Fund at McKinley United Methodist Church, or the donor's choice.

Sellner, Marguerite

Marguerite Sellner, 94, of St. Charles, Minn., died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

She was born June 18, 1907 in St. Charles to Miller and Kathryn (Waechter) Martinson. She married George Sellner on June 29, 1927 in St. Charles.

The couple made their home in St. Charles where she worked for Collier's Department Store. She also assisted her husband, George, who owned and operated Sellner Funeral Home in St. Charles. George died December 28, 1984. Marguerite lived for a time with her daughter, Joan Carleton in Topeka, Kansas, until Joan's death in 2001.

Survivors include a sister, Lillian Anderson of Mankato, Minn.; nieces, Carol Bardot of Seattle, Wash., Lorraine Anderson of Mankato, and Karen Davis of Indianapolis, Ind.; a nephew, Michael Martinson of St. Charles; a son-in-law, Richard Carleton of the Twin Cities; and two stepgrandsons, Richard and John Carleton of the Twin Cities.

In addition to her husband, George, and her daughter, Joan Carleton, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday and 9-10 a.m. Thursday at Hoff Funeral Home's - St. Charles Chapel. There will be a rosary recited at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Mehaffey, Kenneth W.

Kenneth Warren Mehaffey, 87, of Sauer Memorial Home and formerly of 1480 Parks Lane, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at the home.
Ken was born in Minneapolis, Minn. on August 19, 1914, the son of James R. and Annie (Bryant) Mehaffey. He married Violet Verona J. Schapler on February 26, 1938 in Minneapolis. She preceded him in death on January 25, 1994.

Ken resided in Winona since June of 1946, and was an office manager and salesman for Monroe Business Machines, retiring in 1972.

He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Winona; member of the YMCA and active in its senior volleyball league; member of Westfield Golf Club where he was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially Smear, enjoyed fishing, and his many winters spent in Florida.

Ken is survived by his children, Kenneth R. (Nancy) of Winona, Marilyn (George) Isenberg of Minneapolis, and Darlene "Dee" (Michael) Sherman of Winona; grandchildren, Sarah (Scott) Fetting, Megan and April Mehaffey, Terry (Judy) Lumppio, Tiffany Isenberg, Paul (Linda) and Brad (Avin) Sherman; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Mehaffey of Minneapolis and James Mehaffey of Mesa, Ariz.; and a sister, Frances Jindra of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a son, Paul David Mehaffey, two brothers and one sister.
Private family memorial services were held at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. His grandchildren served as honorary casketbearers. Entombment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be directed to the YMCA for the new pool lift.
