Lieder, Rev. Walter F.

Rev. Walter F. Lieder, 92, of 121 North Baker, died Sunday, March 31, 2002 at Sauer Memorial Home.

Walter Lieder was born on April 26, 1909 in Detroit, Mich., the seventh son of Henry and Mary Lieder.

He was Valedictorian of his class at Northwestern High School in Detroit at age 16. He attended Concordia College, then in Fort Wayne, Ind., to prepare for a future as a parish pastor. He graduated with high scholastic honors. He enrolled at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis and graduated in 1931. During his years at the seminary he served frequently on radio station KFUO as pianist and conductor of a children's Bible story hour.

In his senior year he was a member of the first Lutheran Hour Chorus.

Upon graduation he accepted the assignment to serve as secretarial assistant to the Rev. Dr. Paul Schulz, then president of the Central Illinois District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

He was ordained and installed as pastor at Berea Lutheran Church in Riverview Gardens, Missouri. During his tenure at Berea he served as counselor to the St. Louis Walther League. He continued to serve KFUO with over 400 broadcasts of evening Bible Study Hour programs and Morning Meditation programs.

He married Dorothy Schave at Trinity Lutheran church in Wyandotte, Mich. on June 29, 1935. He served as pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Stewardson, Ill. from 1946-1957 and Zion Lutheran Church in Danvers, Ill. from 1957-1978. While at Danvers, Rev. Lieder conducted a number of Bible study classes for the Bloomington circuit, served as circuit counselor, and was co-editor and then editor of the Central Illinois District Bulletin. He also served as chairman of the Corn Belt Library System Board.

Upon his retirement in 1978 he moved to Winona, where he served several years as visitation pastor at St. Martin's Lutheran Church. He also served as vacancy pastor at several parishes in the Southern Minnesota District. In 1996 he received the St. Louis Seminary Koch Award for his long and faithful service to the congregations of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Carol (Loren) Krueger of Minnetonka, Minn.; four sons, David (Patricia) of Cottonwood, Ariz., Charles (Elaine) of Red Wing, Minn., Paul (Merlene) of Mahtomedi, Minn., and Walter John (Jean) of Bloomington, Ill.; twelve grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

An infant son, Martin Paul, and six brothers preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Dost officiating. Burial will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Lewiston, Minn. Visitation will be Wednesday at the church after noon.

Memorials may be made to the Walter Lieder Scholarship Fund at St. Martin's Lutheran School, the Student Aid Fund of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, or Sauer Memorial Home.

Scattum, Goodwin Ervin

Goodwin Ervin Scattum, 79, of Minnesota City, Minn., died Sunday, March 31, 2002 at Whitewater Health Care Center, St. Charles, Minn.

He was born in Fillmore County, Minn. on April 8, 1922, to Iver A. and Stena M. (Hundorf) Scattum. He married Ardis Colbenson at Central Lutheran Church in Winona on December 31, 1949, where he is still a member.

He had worked for Armour Fertilizer Works which later became USS Agri-Chemicals, retiring in 1981.

Goodwin is survived by his wife Ardis, of Minnesota City; children, Patricia (Karl) Moravec of Richfield, Minn., Dennis (Keie Mie) Scattum of Buena Vista, Arizona, Vernon Scattum of Maple Grove, Minn., Gregory (Vickie) Scattum of Minnesota City, Debra (Roman) Kujak of Fountain City, Wis., and Lonney (Jo Ann) Scattum of Minnesota City; fifteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a grandson-in-law, and a sister, Shirley Williams of Clearwater, Minn.

Goodwin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Arthur and Maynard, and two sons-in-law, Thomas Brandes and Jeffrey John.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 4, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, with Rev. William Flesch of Redeemer Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be Saturday, April 6, at Stone Church Cemetery, Houston, Minn. Friends may call on Thursday from 3-4 p.m. at the funeral home.

His grandchildren will serve as casketbearers.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Sandell, Mary

Mary Sandell, 55, died Saturday, March 30, 2002 at her sister's home in Cokato, Minn.

Mary was born July 29, 1946 in St. Cloud, Minn.

She is survived by her father, two brothers and one sister.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 3, at 2 p.m. at the Amethyst House, 428 West Broadway, Winona, with Kathy Redig officiating. Interment of Mary's cremated body will be in the Lake Union Cemetery in South Haven, Minn.

Hoff Funeral Homes - Burke Winona Chapel is assisting the family with local arrangements.

Erdmanczyk, Margaret "Peg"

Margaret "Peg" Erdmanczyk, 76, Winona, died Saturday, October 14, 2000 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

Peg was born April 18, 1924 in La Farge, Wis., to Walter J. and Pauline (Thompson) O'Neil and attended the St. Joseph School of Nursing at the College of St. Catherine. On December 26, 1946 she and Harry Erdmanczyk were married. They later divorced.

Peg worked 25 years as a Registered Nurse at Winona General Hospital and the Watkins Home.

She was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Peg was also a busy mother, raising her children at home.

Survivors include five sons, Michael Erdmanczyk of Minneapolis, Steven Erdmanczyk of Wadesboro, NC, Gerald Erdmanczyk of Winona, James Erdmanczyk of Warner Robbins, GA, and Mark Erdmanczyk of Portland, Ore; two daughters, Margaret Ann Mercherson of Chicago, Ill., and Mary Susan (Dale Espelund) Erdmanczyk of Boise, Ida.; fourteen grandchildren; and a brother, Robert O'Neil of Winona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Pauline Lafky.

A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 18 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. John Sauer officiating. Friends may call one hour before services on Wednesday at the church.

Durham, Kirk

Kirk Durham was born 44 years ago in Pershing, Ind., to Clyde and Lois Durham. On December 4, 1981 he married Marsha Eide at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church, Wilson, Minn. He died Saturday, October 14, 2000 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis., of a cancerous brain tumor.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha; children, Jessie and (Steve) Schultz of Winona, Scott and (Nikki) Durham of Winona, and Angie and Dustin Durham at home; grandchildren, Damon and Shayna Schultz and Makia Durham; his mother, Lois Durham of Winona; maternal-in-laws, Lawrence and Lila Eide of Winona; paternal grandmother, Gladys Durham of Milton, Ind.; siblings, Cherry (Brian) Stuart of Lyons, Mich., Brett (Laurie) Durham of Cleveland, NC, Kitty (Jeff) Horstmann of Mesa, Ariz., and Ann (David) Volkman of Galesville, Wis.; brothers/sisters-in-law, Sheryl Bunke, Rushford, Minn., Everett (Kathy) Eide of Winona, Duane (Stacy) Eide of Stockton, Minn., and Tammy (Matt) Lisowski of Winona; and many nieces and nephews.

Kirk was preceded in death by his father, Clyde Durham, and brother, Vic Durham.

Kirk loved God, his family, riding his Harley and the freedom of driving a semi. God also blessed him with musical talents of singing and playing his guitar. He has a very large and loving family that will miss him very, very deeply. Anyone who knew Kirk, knew love.

Kirk worked as a produce manager for Market Foods for nine years, then at Rochester Wholesale Fruit Co., and then as an over the road driver for Gateway Foods which became Fleming Foods.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, October 18 at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Revs. Oliver H. Lindholm and James Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Wilson, Minn.

Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from noon to 1 p. m.

Ambrose, Edward Sr.

Edward Ambrose Sr., 88, Powell, Wyo., died Friday, October 13, 2000 in Powell.

He was born December 16, 1911 in Winona to Katherine Ambrose. He married Stella M. Orzechowski on April 2, 1940 in St. John Nepomucene Church, Winona. She died January 11, 1986.

He was previously employed at Peerless Chain Company of Winona.

He was a member of St. John Nepomucene Parish of Winona.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Michael) Styer of Newark, Ohio; two sons, Edward Jr. (Maxine) Ambrose of Winona and Steven (Mashi) Ambrose of Phoenix, Ariz.; four grandchildren, James Ambrose, Cheryl (Gary Fish) Peters, Michelle (Roger) Connaughty and Sheena Oakley; two great-grandchildren, Savannah Ambrose and Cody Ambrose; and a stepbrother, Richard Bambenek of Winona.

He was preceded in death by his mother and his wife.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 19 at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. until time of the Mass at the funeral home. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Family members will serve as pallbearers.

Peterson, Florence A.

Florence A. Peterson, 90, Houston, Minn., died Friday, October 13, 2000 at St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home in Wabasha, Minn.

Florence was born June 26, 1910 in Chisholm, Minn. to Joseph and Rose (Belland) Desjardins. She moved with her family, as a child, to Marquette, Mich. and graduated from Northern Michigan College in teaching, and studied physical education and chemistry. Florence married Donald Leo Peterson on July 8, 1935. They lived in Rapid River, Mich. for eight years before moving to Houston.

She taught junior high math in the Houston Public Schools from 1964 until retiring in 1975.

Florence entered Valley View Nursing Home in Houston in 1990 and moved to St.Elizabeth's Nursing Home in Wabasha in 1999.

Survivors include four sons, Don (Betty) Peterson of Colorado Springs, Col., Bill (Dale) Peterson of Troy, Mont., Bob (Mary) Peterson of Champlin, Minn., and John (Ann McKenzie) Peterson of Wabasha; eleven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Roy and Ray Desjardins both of Marquette, Mich.; and a sister, Peg Carlson of San Antonio, Tex.

There will be a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Houston with Rev. William Kulas officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Home's - Houston Chapel. They may also call one hour before services at the church. There will be a Prayer Service at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family prefers memorials be given to a special person in the donor's life to help celebrate the living.
