Goertz, Viola L.

Viola L. Goertz, age 90, formerly of 622 Harriet, Winona, died on Sunday, April 14, 2002, at Sauer Memorial Home.

Viola was born on July 26, 1911, in Wabasha County, to John and Ida Maahs Plein. She married Elmer G. Goertz at Hampton, Iowa; he preceded her in death on February 22, 1991.

She was a homemaker and an excellent seamstress and quilter. She was a member of Central Lutheran Church and its Funeral Committee.

She is survived by daughter, Rosie (Glen) Buege, Winona; grandson, John (Zina Beth) Buege, Winona; great granddaughter, Mary Kate; brother, Art Plein, Phillips, Wisconsin; sister, Stella Graner, Plainview, MN. and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Ervin, Frank, Jack, Lawrence and Joe; and sister Florence Jones.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church, with Rev. Duane O. Salness, officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Dan, Bruce, Jerry, Arvid and Donald Plein, and Larry Jones.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at Martin-Myhre funeral Home and at the church on Wednesday after 10 a.m.

Memorials may be directed to Sauer Memorial Home or Central Lutheran Church.

Scharmer (Miller), Lilah

Lilah M. Scharmer, 79, 0f 722 Sioux Street died Saturday morning (April 13th, 2002), after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Lilah was born on July 3rd, 1922 to Henry Ambrose Miller and Mabel Moen Miller in Winona, Minnesota. Lilah graduated from Winona Senior High in 1940.

Lilah married Ralph A. Scharmer of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota on January 1st, 1942. With their two sons, David and Daniel, and Lilah working as secretary/treasurer they founded Ralph A. Scharmer and Sons Construction Inc. Lilah and Ralph co-owned and developed Scharmer Estates, Ralph A. Scharmer Heights Sub-divisions, and their firm built many commercial and industrial buildings.

As a member of Church of the Nazarene, Lilah served as the church pianist and organist for more than forty years.

Some of Lilah's many hobbies included: playing the piano and organ, gardening, needlepoint, crewel, sewing, decorating, painting, ceramics, reading, and shopping. She never liked to waste time, living every day to its fullest, taking time to play as hard as she worked.

She loved to travel with her family, including many US states and foreign countries. Lilah's true second home was Maui, Hawaii.

She is survived by two sons, David (Vicki) Scharmer, Fountain City, WI, Daniel (Janet) Scharmer, Houston, MN; two daughters, Diane (Duane) Downie of Winona, MN, and Deborah "Debi Lei" Scharmer, Bourbonnais, IL; eight grandchildren, Carolyn (Chris) Chapel, Timothy (Jenny) Scharmer, Daniel (Stephanie) Scharmer, Sara (Brian) Langhorst, Brandi Scharmer, Alison Suk, Dee Dee Downie, and D. David Downie, 8 great-granddaughters, Brittany Scharmer, Courtney Scharmer, Audrey Scharmer, Erin Chapel, Heather Chapel, Amber Chapel, Michaela Scharmer, Caitlyn Scharmer, two grandsons, Ethan Scharmer, Dalton Scharmer, and a "grandson-to-be, " Cameron Langhorst; one brother Nat (Mary Ann) Miller of Winona and one sister Lorraine (Roy) Minnick of Love's Park, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ralph. Lilah will be greatly missed by her close-knit family and wide circle of friends.

Pallbearers were the grandchildren and their spouses. Honorary pallbearers are Scott Scharmer, Loren Scharmer, LaVern Scharmer, Mike Miller, Nick Cowell, and Barry Engrav.

The visitation was Monday, April 15th at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and there was also a visitation at Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday, April 16th. Funeral services were held at Church of the Nazarene on Tuesday, April 16 with Rev. C. Phil Williams officiating. Private family burial was at the Woodlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials. Memorials will be given to churches, Winona Area Hospice, Olivet Nazarene University, and for cancer research.

Timmons, Johanna

Johanna Timmons, age 92, of Winona, died Thursday evening, April 11, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona, MN.

Johanna was born August 26, 1909 in Windom, MN to John and Mary (Grotte) Eidem.

She received her education in the Windom Schools and Mankato State Summer School. She taught in Cottonwood County until her marriage to John E. Timmons on April 20, 1935. They moved to Winona in 1940, which has since been her home. Her husband, John passed away on June 6, 1969. Many of her years were spent as a sales clerk at Williams Book and Stationery, a position she dearly loved.

She was a member of Central Lutheran Church where she served in many areas; she always referred to the church as her second home. She was also a member of the Retired Educators and a charter member of Sons of Norway.

She is survived by a son, Robert and daughter-in-law Carol Timmons of Miami, FL.; a grandson, Michael Timmons of West Chester, PA.; a granddaughter, Kasha Harver of Richmond Va.; sister-in-law, Winnifred Irwin of Waseca, MN and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; five sisters: Martha, Petra, Hannah, Emma and Inga and three brothers: Anton, Henry and Einar.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 18 at 11:00 AM at Central Lutheran Church, Winona, with Rev. Michelle Rem officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 PM and at the church on Thursday, one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be directed to Central Lutheran Church, Winona.

Hopkins, Bertha M.

Bertha M. Hopkins, formerly of 33 Michigan Lane, Winona, reached up and took God's hand on October 10, 2000.

Bertha worked for the City of Winona in several positions, including secretary for Robert Bollant, then City Engineer and Gary Brown, Director of Water and Sewer.

Bertha was preceded in death by Don Hopkins, radio announcer.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna (Robert) Ruggles of Seattle, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 19 in Marshalltown, Iowa at the Salvation Army Corps.

Dornfeld, Dr. Clinton A.

Dr. Clinton A. Dornfeld, Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Winona, died Friday, July 14, 2000.

Dr. Dornfeld was born February 17, 1918, to Harry and Lovisa Dornfeld in Winona.

He is survived by his wife, Grace; daughters, Sandra and Pamela; sons, Eric (Mary) and Bruce, (Sally) Dornfeld; stepson, Scott Patterson; grandchildren, John, Sarah, Michael, David and Gabrielle; and a brother, Robert (Janice) Dornfeld of Winona.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Krysinski, a brother, Lyle Dornfeld, and a stepdaughter, Christine Schaefer.

Dr. Dornfeld graduated from Winona Senior High School and went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Winona State University in 1940, a master's degree in organic chemistry from Pullman State University in 1943, a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from Iowa State University in 1946 and a Ph.D. degree in psychology from U.S. International University of San Diego in 1981. He worked as a research chemist for G.D. Searle in Skokie, Ill., from 1947-1974.

A private memorial service is being arranged and will take place in Winona on October 19.

Schlesser, Florence L.

Florence L. Schlesser, 88, Waumandee, Wis., died Friday, October 13, 2000 at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 18 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Waumandee, with Rev. John Steiner officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery.

Harkenrider, Veronica (Ronnie)

Veronica (Ronnie) Harkenrider, 72, died Tuesday, October 17, 2000 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

She was born March 24, 1928 to Esther Grilliot and Archie Remi LeCompte in Muskegon, Mich. She attended St. Jean's grade and high schools in Muskegon and graduated from the College of Saint Teresa, Winona.

She worked at Neville's and KWNO and also at the College of Saint Teresa in the office of Alumnae and College Relations.

Ronnie married Roger Schneider in 1954 and they adopted twin sons, Timothy and Terrance in 1970. They were later divorced. In 1980, Ronnie married Robert Harkenrider.

Ronnie was a member of the Winona Country Club and its Women's Golf Association. Over the years she was active in the Mrs. Jaycees, Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Goodfellows, Birthright, Portia Club, Red Cross and CST Alumnae Association. She was also a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Ronnie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 1998, her parents, and one sister, Mary Margaret LeCompte.

Ronnie is survived by her sons, Timothy and Terrance Schneider; three stepdaughters; sister, Mrs. Donald (Frances) MacDonald of Tulsa, Okla.; brothers, Thomas (Jeanette) LeCompte and Archie LeCompte, both of West End, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 3:30 p.m. Friday, October 20 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. John M. Sauer as celebrant. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Friends may call at the church after 2:30 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Winona Area Hospice Services, Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, or Saint Teresa Alumnae Association.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Winona, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Ronnie's sister, Fran, would like to express her appreciation to the people of Winona for remembering Ronnie during her illness with your cards, flowers, thoughts and prayers. Your community has truly been a wonderful and caring pillar of strength and support.

Wilkie, Adele Mearns

Adele Mearns Wilkie, beloved mother of Michael Wilkie and Bonnie Henricks, loving wife of the late Leighton Allyn Wilkie, grandmother, great-grandmother, hostess, author, poet, philanthropist and benefactor peacefully passed away at her Santa Barbara, Cal., home on Wednesday, June 12, 2002, with her children at her side.

Mrs. Wilkie is survived by her son, Michael Wilkie of Chicago, Ill.; her daughter, Bonnie Henricks and Bonnie's husband, Jon of Lake Forest, Ill.; seven grandchildren: Grant, Parker and Austin Wilkie, Deborah Henricks Stran, Shelley Henricks Keating, Gigi Henricks Lyssagor, and William Henricks; and four great-grandchildren: Brooke and Shannon Stran, Nikolai Lyssagor, and Carolyn Keating.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated Friday, June 14, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Montecito, Cal.

A local and international leader in philanthropy and appreciation of the arts and preserving history through her love for antiques and support of emerging artists, Mrs. Wilkie was loved and respected by all who knew her.

Mrs. Wilkie celebrated life and contributed the most to each day as she enriched the lives of all those who encountered her. Santa Barbara has lost one of its most special citizens.

Born on Christmas Eve, 1909, in Albuquerque, NM, to Rachel and William Mearns, Adele Mearns Wilkie's journey of a lifetime led her around the world. Educated at St. Vincent's Academy, the University of Arizona and the University of Chicago, she graduated with honors with a degree in education. In addition, she captained victorious basketball teams and gained many blue ribbons as an equestrian. Always an innovator, she devised methods of teaching highly talented children in her fifth grade class. This would lead to a lifetime of motivating and loving children.

In 1936 she married the love of her life, Leighton Allyn Wilkie of Winona. They were wed at St. Mary's Church in Lake Forest, Ill. They settled in Long Grove, Ill., and established the DoALL Company in Des Plaines, Ill. Leighton Wilkie invented the metal cutting band saw which is credited with being the last of the seven basic machine tools.
