Kowalewski, Helen R.

Helen R. Kowalewski, 79, of 2529 60th Avenue SW, Rochester, Minn., died Sunday, October 8, 2000 at Seasons Hospice in Rochester.

She was born February 21, 1921 in Winona to Robert W. and Lena (Malenke) Schueler. She married Lambert Kowalewski on September 24, 1940 in Winona.

She was the owner and operator of the Hot Fish Shop with her husband for over thirty years.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, the Polish Heritage Society, Winona Country Club, BPOE #327 Auxiliary, and was an active donor to Villa Maria Academy, Frontenac, Minn.

She is survived by children, Nancy Coshenet of Winona, Mary (Louis) Sterling of Rochester, and Henry Kowalewski of Hollywood, Cal.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Eleanore (Roy) Weber of Winona, Eugene Schueler of Mountain Home, Ark., Ann (John) Ramsey of Tucson, Ariz., Alice (Allen) Lechelt, Vernon (Arlene) Schueler, Jerry (Karen) Schueler and Judy Miller, all of Winona, and Joyce (Gerald) Woodard, Dakota, Minn.; and a special sister-in-law, Val Schueler of Winona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lambert, and brothers, Victor and Robert.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 12 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church with Rev. Dale Tupper officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be grandchildren, Chris Zimmerman, Angela Sherack, Curt Coshenet, Rick Coshenet, Derek Coshenet and Cari Coshenet.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church on Thursday after 9 a.m.

Memorials may be directed to Seasons Hospice, 5650 Weatherhill Road, Rochester, MN 55902.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Aschom, Catherine Ella (Hawkins)

Catherine Ella (Hawkins) Aschom, 80, formerly of Lansing and New Albin, Iowa, died Thursday, October 5, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis after a brief illness.

She was born May 29, 1920 in Waukon, Iowa, to Wallace and Grace (Knox) Hawkins. She was a graduate of Waukon High School, where she was active in band. After graduation, she toured with a tent show.

On September 19, 1939, she married Norbert Aschom in Lansing, Iowa.

"Nubbs" and "Kate" were the parents of eight children, six of whom survive: Norbert (Nancy) Aschom Jr. of Prairie du Chien, Wis., Richard (Barbara) Aschom of New Berlin, Wis., Michael (Marian) Aschom of LaCrosse, Wis., Kathleen Christophersen of LaCrosse, Susan (Roger) Ekern of Rushford, Minn., and Julie (Greg) Buel of Winona; sixteen grandchildren: Amy, Sara, Steven, Christopher, Melissa, Jamie, Collin, Craig, Mary, Aaron, Benjamin, Kristin, Adam, Tyler, Taylor and Alexis; six great-grandchildren, Bailey, Deanna, Nicole, Andrew, Michael, and Gabriel; and a brother, Theodore Hawkins of Santa Rosa, Cal.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, John and Clark, her parents, two brothers and a sister.

Funeral services were Saturday, October 7 at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center in LaCrosse where she lived for the past 14 years. Rev. Tom Smith officiated. Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing, Iowa.

A memorial fund has been established with proceeds to be used at Bethany-St. Joseph Care Center.

Boyum, Palmer A.

Palmer A. Boyum, 88, Rushford, Minn., died Sunday, October 8, 2000 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home, Rushford, where he was a resident for seven years.

He was born January 12, 1912 in Peterson, Minn., to Andrias A. and Emma (Quickstad) Boyum. He married Frances T. Ives Flatten on September 26, 1959 in Winona.

He was a lifelong farmer in the Peterson area and in 1987 sold his farm and moved to Winona.

He was a member of the Arendahl Lutheran Church and was active in all church functions.

Palmer served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include two stepsons, Duane (Brenda) Flatten of LaCrescent, Minn. and Richard (Sharon) Flatten, Winona; a stepdaughter, Patricia (Charles) Brown of Winona; a step son-in-law, Richard J. Kluzik of Fountain City, Wis.; twelve step-grandchildren; seventeen step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Myrtle Fenney of Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford and Dorothy (Ed) Berg of Winona; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, four sisters, and a stepdaughter, Marge Kluzik.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 11 at Arendahl Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger Knudson officiating. Burial will be in Arendahl Lutheran Cemetery, Peterson, Minn.

Friends may call Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of service at the church.

Pallbearers will be his step-grandchildren.

Cada, Rosella A.

Rosella A. Cada, 91, formerly of 525 East Broadway, died Monday, October 9, 2000 at the Watkins Home.

She was born October 11, 1908 in Marshland, Wis., to Joseph and Anna (Gappa) Dureske. She married Harold P. Cada on May 21, 1929 in St. Joseph's Church. He died April 26, 1965.

She was a member of St. John Nepomucene Parish and its Rosary Society.

Survivors include two sons, Harold Jr. (Lillian) Cada and John (Pat) Cada, both of Winona; a daughter, Kathy (Tony) Campbell of Bullhead City, Ariz.; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-eight great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a grandchild, three brothers and three sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, October 12 at St. John Nepomucene Church with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass, at the church.

Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

The family respectfully requests that memorials be directed to the Watkins Home and St. John's Rosary Society.

Simon, Lillian M.

Lillian M. Simon, 98, Winona, died Monday, October 9, 2000 at the Watkins Home where she had lived the past seven years.

She was born June 21, 1902 to Edward and Sophia (Mayer) Heim. She was the oldest and last surviving member of the family. On September 23, 1924 she married Walter H. Simon at St. Anthony's Church in Altura, Minn.

She was retired from Winona General Hospital.

Lillian was a member of St. Casimir's Church. She attended Dublin School in Elba Township and graduated from Good Counsel Academy in Mankato in 1920. She attended Winona State Teacher's College and taught in country schools near St. Charles. She and her husband farmed in the Dover-Eyota area until moving to Winona in 1946.

Lillian was an active community volunteer reaching out to many in need. She touched countless lives, never saying no to anyone who sought her help. Lillian enjoyed little children, gardening, and especially helping others.

She is survived by two sons, James (Marion) and John (Diana) of Winona; one daughter, Ruth (Edward) Schneider of Lake City; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Robert, a granddaughter, Julie, two brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Casimir's Church with preliminary services at 10:00 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rev. Edward F. McGrath will officiate.

Friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home where there will be a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Jerry Heim, William Heim, Jason Losinski, Jacob Losinski, Christopher Schneider and Nicholas Schneider.

Memorials may be directed to the Watkins Home or St. Casimir's Church.

Adams, Marcella Buchholz

Marcella Buchholz Adams, 72, Trempealeau, Wis., formerly of Porterfield and Milwaukee, Wis., passed away Thursday, September 28, 2000 at Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall, Wis.

She was born to Benjamin and Eleanor (Suchla) Hovell on July 10, 1928 in Trempealeau County. She married Irvin Buchholz in 1947. They later divorced. In 1986 she married David Adams. He has died.

She is survived by a daughter, Alice Walker of Almena, Wis.; a brother, LeRoy (Ramona) Hovell of Galesville, Wis.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Nancy Drake, and a brother, Richard.

Services were held October 2 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Trempealeau with Pastor Jerry Hanson officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Centerville, Wis.

Schultz, Clarence "Dutch"

Clarence "Dutch" Schultz, 81, of 712 Harriet Street, died Friday, October 6, 2000 at the Veterans Hospital, Tomah, Wis.

Clarence was born on March 28, 1919 at Winthrop, Minn., to Alfred and Emma (Huebner) Schultz. He graduated from Fairfax High School and then served his country for four years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He came to Winona in 1945. He married Betty Jacobs on February 18, 1950 in Winona.

He retired in 1979 from NSP.

He is a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church and was an usher, a member of Westfield Golf Club and the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and his flowers.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Craig Schultz of Winona; a daughter, Linda (Curt) Buendorf of Mankato, Minn.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Floyd Schultz of Fairfax; and sisters, Lila Quast of Norwood, Minn. and Eleanor Weinztle, Fairfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Florence Hamsmith.

Funeral services were Monday, October 9 at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. William Flesch officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery where military rites were provided by the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9.

Casketbearers were Jeremy Buendorf, Eric Schultz, Angie Wagner, Kayla Schultz, Mike Erickson, Tom Erickson, Paul Ziebell and Dennis Jacobs.

Memorials may be directed to St. Martin's Church.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
