Smith, Gertrude F.

Gertrude F. Smith, 90, died Thursday, January 6, 2000 at the Watkins Home in Winona.

Gertrude F. Jennison was born August 16, 1909 in Winona to Frank and Mary (Palbicki) Jennison. On September 25, 1930 she married Philip Smith in Winona. He died December 16, 1991.

Gertrude was a lifelong resident of the Winona area and had been a resident of the Watkins Home for the last ten years. She was a past member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Betty Neyers of Goodview, MN; a son, Donald F. Smith of Bluff Siding, WI; twenty grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; thirteen great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie Muras of Winona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter Patricia, two grandsons, six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be Monday, January 10 at 1 p.m. at Hoff Funeral Homes-Burke Winona Chapel with Rev. Michael Cronin officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home.

Anderson, Winifred S.

Winifred S. Anderson, 90, of the Lamberton Residence, Winona, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Scott County, MN. on November 22, 1909 to Alsak and Signe (Vehus) Stenersen. She married Herman M. Anderson in Minneapolis, MN, in 1940. They made their home in Richfield, MN. for many years. Herman died in 1963.

Winifred was a member of Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Richfield.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy (Garry) Gerson of Minnesota City, MN and Joan (Jory) Hite, Walnut Creek, CA; grandchildren, Dana Lynn (Darren) Hilleshiem, Andrew Garry Gerson and fiance Morwen McCormick, Julie Irene Hite and Jay Martin Hite; and a sister, Stella (Kalmer) Senstad, Lakeville, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one grandson, one sister and one brother.

Funeral services were Saturday, January 8 at Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Richfield.Burial was in Sunset Memorial Park, St. Anthony, MN.

A memorial service for Winifred will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, January 10 at the Lamberton Residence in the Music Room with Rev. Wade E. Davick of Central Lutheran Church, Winona, officiating.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Matejka, Frank W., Jr.

Frank W. Matejka, Jr., Goodview, MN, died Saturday, January 15, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, MN., of a heart attack.

Frank was born in Winona to Frank, Sr. and Frances (Kulas) Matejka. He was an altar boy for St. John's Catholic Church. He graduated from Winona Cotter High School. He married Jeannette W. Wegman at St. John's Catholic Church forty-one years ago.

He served overseas in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He was a lineman for the Milwaukee Railroad prior to working as a molder for the Gorman Company for over forty years. He was president of his local union for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where he ushered and helped with bingo.

Frank is survived by his wife, Jeannette; a daughter, Jodi (Erik) Brom of Goodview; his favorite and only granddaughter, Emily Rose, who was much loved and meant the world to him; his very lonesome cat, Sneezy; a sister, Carol Mlynczak of Winona; and brothers, Donald Matejka, Gerald (Carol) Matejka and Michael (Mary) Matejka, all of Winona, and Robert (Barbara) Matejka, Prairie du Chien, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 19 at 2 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frank had a heart of gold and will be missed every waking minute.

May he rest in peace for all eternity.

LaBarre, John Douglas

John Douglas LaBarre, 78, of 3777 Sixth St., Goodview, MN, died Saturday, January 15, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

John, known as Johnny, was born on May 5, 1921, in the family home in Winona, to Helma Serene (Swanson) and Glenn Everett LaBarre. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a link trainer instructor during World War II. Following the war, he returned to Winona and became an integral part of the family business known as Winona Produce Company. He would later become the owner and manager of the poultry produce company.

Later in life, John worked for the Williams Amusement Company and was also a driver for the Winona Transit Service.

John was a member of the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9, Winona, past member of the Westfield Golf Course, Police Reserves and the 40 and 8. He learned to fly from the late renowned Max Conrad and flew his first solo flight at age 16, a truly remarkable age for his time. He owned his own plane for many years and enjoyed every moment in the air.

Other interests included fishing, raccoon hunting, golfing and enjoying the company and friendships at the American Legion Club. One could also find John relaxing on his front porch in Goodview watching the cars go by.

He is survived by his sister, Jeanne (George) Boller of Winona; brother-in-law, Stanley Anderson of Maple Grove, MN; two nieces, Jennifer Feigal of St. Paul, MN and Susan (John) Hinds, Afton, MN; two nephews, Stephen (Diane) Boller, Tonka Bay, MN and Craig Anderson, Twin Cities; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beth Anderson.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 19 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald G. Dommer of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9, Winona.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon on Wednesday.

Honorary pallbearers will be Elmer Kohner, James Englerth, Bill Teske, Stephen Boller and Craig Anderson.

Memorials may be directed to the American Legion in support of their many worthy endeavors and projects.

Holte, Ethel Jane

Ethel Jane Holte, 79, 751 West Broadway, died Saturday, January 15, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 18 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. Michael Cronin officiating. Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.

Bearden, Robert E. "Bob"

Robert E. "Bob" Bearden, 70, Lewiston, MN, died Thursday, January 13, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Bob was born on June 10, 1929 to Everett and Edith (Eddy) Bearden in Worthington. They moved to Lewiston when he was 6. Bob graduated from Lewiston High School in 1947. He married Muriel Larson on August 26, 1948 at Lewiston Presbyterian Church.

They owned and operated Beardon's Trucking Service for 10 years and then owned and operated the Lewiston Locker Plant for 12 years. Bob then worked for Lewiston Implement and ran a small hobby farm for 7 years. After that he worked for Lewiston Auto Co. until his retirement 2 years ago.

He was a member of Lewiston Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and served as an Elder. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Bob was a previous 4-H Leader, Lions member, Lewiston Booster Club member and Jaycee member. In the past he enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling.

He is survived by his son, Gregory (Linda) of Zumbro Falls; three daughters, Pamela (Larry) Ellinghuysen of Crystal, Robyn (Dean) Fox of St. Charles, and Sheryll (Rick) Ties of Rochester; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Merle (Doris) of Rochester; and eight nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents and an infant sister.

Funeral services were Monday, January 17 at Lewiston Presbyterian Church with Rev. Richard Jones officiating. Burial was in the Lewiston Public Cemetery.

Anderson, Helen

Helen Anderson, formerly of Arcadia, WI, passed away in her sleep at her home in Brooking, OR on December 31, 1999.

She was born May 20, 1917, the daughter of Paul and Mary (Marsolek) Kokott. She married William Anderson in 1936 and moved to northern Wisconsin and then on to Oregon.

She is survived by her three sons, William and James of Springfield, OR, and Michael of Veneta, OR; two daughters, Jane Lant and Judith Anderson, both of Brookings, OR; four grandchildren, Marla Scott of Washington, Jason Lant of Brookings, and Dylan and Ty Anderson of Springfield; five sisters, Agnes Wood, Mary Beck, and Julia Karis of Winona, Margaret (Carroll) Bohlinger of Alma, WI, and Clare (Calvin) Heinske of Garner, NC; a brother, Andy Kokott of Menomonie, WI; and various nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, her brother Frank Kokott and sister Rose Voelker.

A memorial service was held at the Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings on January 15.

Mrozek, Alice S.

Alice S. Mrozek, 76, Rt. 3, Winona, died of cancer on Sunday, January 16, 2000 at Sauer Memorial Home.

She was born May 4, 1923 in Homer, MN, to Clarence L. and Martha M. (Loeding) Sanford. She married Lambert A. Mrozek on July 16, 1949 in St. Thomas Pro Cathedral, Winona. He died December 4, 1989.

Prior to her retirement, Alice was employed at Lake Center Switch Co. for 30 years.

She was a member of the Homer Civic Association and a friend of the Homer United Methodist Church.

Alice is survived by nieces and nephews, friends, and neighbors in the Homer community where she was fondly called, "Grandma Alice."

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 19 at 10 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Chapel with Rev. Gwen Bohlke officiating. Friends may call Wednesday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home.

Memorials may be directed to Homer United Methodist Church.
