Whetstone, Marie Elizabeth

Marie Elizabeth Whetstone, 81, of 579 Winona St., died Sunday, January 16, 2000 at the Watkins Home, Winona.

Marie was born September 25, 1918 in Winona to Joseph and Augusta (Novitzk) Datta. She married Maynard Whetstone on October 25, 1939 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Winona.

She worked at Winona Glove Company in the 1930's, and from 1953 to 1965 she worked at the Whetstone Machine Co., owned by the family.

She was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church in Winona, where she taught Sunday School for 38 years. Marie was an active member of the church and also of the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include her husband, Maynard; a son, Edward at home; a sister, Gertrude Koskovich of Winona; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three sisters, three brothers-in-law, and a nephew.

Funeral services will be Thursday, January 20, at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel United Methodist Church with Rev. Gwen Bohlke officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Minnesota City, MN. Friends may call Wednesday, January 19 at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m., then on Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m. at the church.

Casketbearers are Patrick and Aaron Dienger, Chris, Gary, Richard and William J. Whetstone.

Memorials may be directed to Immanuel United Methodist Church.

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Denzer, Rose G.

Rose G. Denzer, Rt. 1, Minnesota City, MN, died Monday, January 17, 2000 at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.

Rose was born August 18, 1917 in Winona County to Jim and Katie (Overing) Stanek. She married Lowell S. Denzer on November 21, 1938 in Winona. The couple farmed in Winona County their entire married life, farming near Minnesota City since 1959. Lowell died January 25, 1992.

Rose attended the Lewiston Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed gardening, making pickles, and working on the farm.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen (David) Herzberg of Fountain City, WI; a son, Darwin (Sue) Denzer of Minnesota City; two grandsons, Christopher Denzer and Derek Herzberg; two brothers, Eugene Stanek and Albert Stanek, both of Winona; and a sister, Katie Evans of West Allis, WI.

She was preceded in death by four children, Daryl, Sharon, Shirley Ann and an infant, one grandson, two sisters, and a brother.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lewiston Church of the Brethren with Rev. Gordon Hoffert officiating.Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Home's - Lewiston Chapel. They may also call one hour before services Thursday at the church.

Strange, Sylvia M.

Sylvia M. Strange, 87, of the Sauer Memorial Home and formerly of 1011 East Fourth St., died Saturday, January 29, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born February 10, 1912 in Winona to Arthur and Fannie (Fort) Voelker. She married Fred Strange on November 12, 1943 in Winona. He died April 1, 1978.

She was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Sylvia was a cosmetology instructor at Hardings School of Beauty in the late 1960's. She was owner of Clip and Curl Beauty Parlor and also the Beauty Spot Beauty Parlor in the 1960's.

Survivors include a son, Roger (Fran) Mueller of Winona; two daughters, Anna (Marc) Houdek and Jullie (John) Levinski, both of Winona; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sixteen step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two step-sons, Leonard (Lois) Strange of Winona and Donald (Marian) Strange, White Bear Lake, MN; a step-daughter, Margie (Julius) Schneider, Winona; a sister, Lovina (Voelker) Nuszloch of Lewiston, MN; and two brothers, Calvin J. Voelker of Apple Valley, CA and Arthur Voelker, Winona.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a sister Nettie (Voelker) Haedtke, two brothers, William "Bill" Voelker and Fred Voelker, killed in France during invasion World War II.

Funeral services were Monday, January 31 at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. Ronald G. Dommer officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Steve Mueller, Chris Mueller, Dave Benson, Arthur Voelker and Randy Voelker.

Stalzer, Sophie,

Sophie Stalzer, 83, Winona, and formerly of Illinois, died Saturday, January 29, 2000 at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.

Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, February 27 at United Church of Christ in Union, IL.

Marin, Violet Susan

Violet Susan Marin, 85, Rushford, MN, died Friday, January 28, 2000 at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.

Funeral services were Monday, January 31 at Money Creek United Methodist Church with Rev. Lora Sturm officiating. Burial was in the Money Creek Cemetery.

Frosch, Linda I.

Linda I. Frosch, 55, LaCrescent, MN, died Friday, January 28, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.

Funeral services were Tuesday, February 1 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in LaCrescent, with Pastor Mike Woods officiating. Burial was in Prince of Peace Lutheran Cemetery.

Janikowski, Richard

Richard Janikowski, 87, 468 East Fifth St., died Saturday, January 29, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born August 15, 1912 in Winona, to Alex and Petranella (Killa) Janikowski. He married Pauline Nelson on July 17, 1937 at St. Stanislaus Parish House. She preceded him in death on November 9, 1998.

He worked for 38 years at Peerless Chain. He was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, the FOE #1243 and the Winona Athletic Club. He was a former member of the BPOE #327, and also was a longtime member of Westfield Golf Club.

He is survived by a brother, Joseph (Irene) Janikowski of Winona; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister Josephine Frey, and brothers, Dan, Edwin and Fred.

Funeral services were Tuesday, February 1 at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Robert Meyer officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Duellman, Susanne M. "Sue"

Susanne M. Duellman, 55, of Fountain City, WI, died Saturday, January 29, 2000 at her home.

She was born October 20, 1944 in Winona, to Fred and Marian (Irmscher) Keller. On August 29, 1964, she married her high school sweetheart George R. Duellman in Fountain City.

She was a lifelong resident of Fountain City, residing her whole life along the Mississippi River that she found so peaceful.

She worked as a paraprofessional for 28 years at Cochrane-Fountain City elementary and high school, where she blessed the lives of countless special needs students with her knowledge, love and patience. She brightened the day of many staff members she considered dear friends.Sue received an award for Regional Paraprofessional of the Year in 1998, which was very special to her because her students nominated her.

She was a charter member of the Fountain City Historical Society, a member of the Viking Chapter Antique Car Club and was dubbed "den mother" of the Fountain City River Players for her many hours of volunteer work at numerous musicals.

Sue will be remembered for her compassion and kindness toward everyone and everything. She accepted people for who they were and would never say a bad word about anyone. Her family always came first and she was the spark at all gatherings. Her granddaughter, Savannah, filled her life with joy and sunshine every day of her life. It was important to Sue that she share her love of reading and sense of family values with her. All appreciated her sense of humor and uncanny wit. Her great knowledge of "a little about everything" amazed us all. She is irreplaceable.

She will be sadly missed by her devoted husband George; two loving daughters, Amy (Bruce) Sixty and Dana (Sam Siegel) Duellman (her sons-in-law considered her "Mom" and "Mommy"); her precious granddaughter, Savannah Sixty; her mother, Marian Keller; her brother, Fred Keller, Jr.; and her many close relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father and has joined him in heaven.

Services were Tuesday, February 1 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Rev. J. Thomas Finucan officiating. Private spring burial will be in the Fountain City Public Cemetery.

A memorial is being arranged.

Sue will be remembered as a role model for all who knew her. She never stopped learning and was there for everyone, constantly giving of herself and never expecting anything in return. All that knew her loved her.

Stanz, Vera Evelyn

Vera Evelyn Stanz, 99, Rochester, MN, died Friday, January 28, 2000 at Season's Hospice in Rochester.

Vera was born on March 31, 1900 to Bernard and Augusta (Hardtke) Koepsel in rural St. Charles. She married Ben Stanz in 1920 and was a lifetime member of Our Saviors Moravian Church in Altura.

For several years she worked at Altura Rex Turkey Plant and the Altura Creamery. Ben died in 1951 and she moved to Rochester. She then started working in the sewing department at Mayo Clinic. She retired in 1965 and continued to sew for people from her home. Vera will be remembered as being a seamstress and for her cookie baking. She also enjoyed playing cards.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty (John) Gatzlaff of Altura and Veirlyn (John) Hoisington of Fort Meyers, FL; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister-in-law, Viola Koepsel of St. Charles; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter Carol Walsh, a brother Clem and three sisters, Irene, Erma and Milly.

Funeral services were Tuesday, February 1 at Our Saviors Moravian Church in Altura with Rev. Keith Harke officiating.Burial was in Hebron Moravian Cemetery.

Hoff Funeral Homes - St. Charles Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
