Fritchman, Earl R.

Earl R. Fritchman, 81, Winona, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at his daughter's home in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Funeral arrangements are being completed by Martin-Myhre Funeral Home.

Youngs, Nancy Lou

Nancy Lou (Thomson) Youngs, 67, of rural Winona passed away Sunday July 14th at Lake Winona Manor after a lengthy illness.
Nancy was born June 21, 1935 in Urbana, Ohio to Russell and Harriet (Liles) Thomson and was a graduate of Urbana High School and Ohio State University.
She married James E. Youngs on July 9, 1955. They were married 47 years.
Nancy taught elementary school in the Buckeye Valley School District, Delawar, Ohio from 1965 until 1976 when she and her family relocated to Winona. In 1982 she began teaching at Immanuel Lutheran (Silo) School of Lewiston, retiring from there in 1997. After retirement, she continued to teach as a substitute teacher at Silo and continued volunteer work at Community Memorial Hospital.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church; its Ladies Aid and Winona Health (Community Memorial Hospital) Auxiliary.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Jim, of rural Winona, by three sons, Chris of Alamosa, Colorado; Andy of Antelope (Sacramento), California; and Curt of Ames, Iowa, seven grandchildren, a sister Kathleen Jordan of Bellbrook, Ohio. Her parents, a sister Patricia Stickley and a newborn daughter Dayna Lynn preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church - Silo, in rural Lewiston with the Rev. William Meilner officiating. Interment will follow in Silo Cemetery.
Friends may call at Immanuel Lutheran Church from 4 - 8 PM. They may also call one hour before services at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Immanuel Lutheran School, Rt. 2, Box 63, Lewiston, MN 55952.
Hoff Funeral Home's - Lewiston Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
Nancy devoted her life to her family and her school children. She taught not only through her spoken words but also through her actions. She was an inspiration to and role model for countless students, families and friends.

Katula, Irene V.

Irene V. Katula, 40, of 868 East Wabasha St., died Saturday, July 13, 2002 in the Emergency Room at Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born August 29, 1961 in Winona to Kenneth and Darlene (Allen) Fort. She married Richard R. Katula on September 8, 1989 in St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winona.
She was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, Richard R. Katula of Winona; a daughter, Amanda Plein and a son, Brian Plein, both of Winona; three brothers, Steve and Kenneth Fort, both of Stockton, Minn. and William (Deanna) Fort of Winona; and three sisters, Debbie (Keith) Janzow of Lewiston, Minn., Jenny (Paul) Reinhart of Winona, and Bettie Zuccaro of Dubuque, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 16, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Dost officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Stockton, Minn.
Pallbearers were Jerry Brown, Ryan McGregor, Adolph Schildknecht, Chuck Loshek, Mark Fratzke and Dan Katula.
Full of love, compassion and understanding, Irene was a unique person, a loving mother who always put her children first, and a beautiful wife to the man who stole her heart. Irene always had time to listen and console people with life's everyday issues. She could say the phrase to make you smile and forget all your worries. Irene, your family greatly cherishes you.

Berg, Edward C.

Edward C. Berg, 94, formerly of Bangor, Wis., died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.
He was born September 4, 1907 in Bangor to Louis and Pauline (Oertel) Berg. Edward was baptized into God's family at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Bangor and was a lifelong member of that congregation. In 1925, Ed graduated from Bangor High School. He then graduated from Wisconsin Business College and attended LaCrosse Normal School. On August 27, 1938, he married Adela Ninnemann in Rock Springs, Wis. They lived most of their married life in Bangor.
Ed owned and operated Ed's Conoco Service in Bangor from 1941-1977. He was also active in church and community life. In 1999, Ed and Adela moved to Winona.
Survivors include his wife, Adele of Winona; a daughter, Linda of Lake Mills, Wis.; a son, John (Susan) of Winona; two grandchildren, John C. and Anne, both of Winona; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Gertrude Berg, Mildred Miller and Pauline Berg, and three brothers, his twin brother Ludwig, Arthur and Waldeman.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bangor, with Rev. Roy Hefti and Rev. James Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
If desired, memorials may be given to St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church or School in Bangor.
Be faithful even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. Rev. 2:10

Zollman, Robert H.

Robert H. Zollman, 59, formerly of Winona, died Saturday, July 13, 2002 at his home in Fort Mohave, Ariz.
Arrangements are pending.

Gensmer, Frances

Frances Gensmer, 88, died Friday, July 12, 2002 at Hillcrest Community Center in Plainview, Minn.
Frances was born October 29, 1913 in Pine County, Minn. to Oscar and Hilda (Nordquist) Anderson. She married Albert Gensmer on December 10, 1932 in Norton Township, Minn. He died November 6, 1998. Frances and Albert had enjoyed 65 years of marriage.
Frances worked for many years and retired from the turkey plant in Altura. She enjoyed gardening, raising chickens and canaries, crocheting and playing cards, especially schafskopf and 500. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at Norton and had been a custodian there for many years as well as a member of the Ladies Aid.
Survivors include four children, Shirley Kaul of Stillwater, Minn., Phyllis Camitsch of Lake Elmo, Minn., James (Cheryl) of Plainview, Minn., and Jeff (Susan) of Stewartville, Minn; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, ClarMae Anderson of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.
Her parents, husband, a son, Eugene, a brother, Alden, and a sister, Josephine preceded her in death.
Funeral services were Monday, July 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church at Norton with Rev. David Eckert officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Schreiber, Wilfrid P. "Bill"

Wilfrid P. "Bill" Schreiber, 88, died June 25, 2002, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare of Winona.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Chapel at St. Anne Extended Healthcare. Burial will be in Lake Havasu Memorial Gardens, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.

Bergan, Frances Geneva

Frances Geneva Bergan, 93, died Thursday, July 11, 2002 at the Chosen Valley Health Care Center in Chatfield, Minn.
Geneva was born on November 19, 1908 in Preston, Minn., to James and Bertha (Hegland) Johnson. She graduated from Preston High School in 1927. She married Adry Nichols on November 9, 1927 in Lanesboro, Minn. He died on November 24, 1962.
Geneva was a cook in different restaurants in St. Charles and Chatfield. On August 7, 1965 she married Otto Bergan in St. Charles and they moved to LeCenter, Minn. where they lived for over 30 years. Otto died on October 7, 1996 and Geneva returned to St. Charles.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in St. Charles as well as the American Legion Auxiliary in St. Charles.
Survivors include her two sons, Russ (Audrey) of Mazeppa, Minn., and Donald (Ellen) of Preston, Minn.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Johnson of Chatfield, Minn. and Orvis Johnson of Dover, Minn.; a sister, Leone Deedrick of Winona; four stepchildren; and several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two sisters, Inez and Olive, and a twin brother at birth.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 16, at Faith Lutheran Church in St. Charles with Rev. Ramie Bakken officiating. Burial was in Saratoga Cemetery.

Christie, David S.

David S. Christie, 76, died Friday, July 12, 2002 at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.
David was born August 29, 1925 in Saratoga Township, Minn., to Grant and Nellie (Smith) Christie. He married LaVonne Antonson on August 28, 1946 in St. Charles, Minn.
Dave began farming south of St. Charles in 1946 and later moved to Utica and farmed in the area until retiring in Stockton, Minn.
He was a member of the Utica Presbyterian Church, the American Legion in St. Charles, Disabled American Veterans of Winona, was a member of AA, with 35 years sobriety, and served on the Utica School Board.
Dave enjoyed hunting and fishing in his early years along with traveling, especially west to the mountains and south to Florida in the winter months. He loved his family deeply, enjoying his grandchildren and his special little great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, LaVonne; five children, Jeanne (George) Buss of Elba, Minn., Judy (Les) Geransee of Tomah, Wis., Robert (Marilyn) of St. Charles, Karen (Ray) Paschke of Rochester, Minn., and James (Renee) of Altura, Minn.; fourteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Erickson of Rochester; and a brother, Richard (Dorothy) Christie of St. Charles.
His parents, two sisters, Grace and Ruth and one brother, Donald preceded him in death.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 16, at Hoff Funeral homes - Lewiston Chapel with Rev. Timothy Gerarden officiating. Burial was in Saratoga Cemetery.

Burfeind, Martin H.

Martin H. Burfeind, 93, entered his heavenly home on Friday, March 28, 2003, from the Sauer Memorial Home, where he had been a resident since July 1997.
Martin was born to Henry and Hattie (Beilke) Burfeind on the family farm near Silo, rural Lewiston, Minn., on December 10, 1909. He was united in marriage with Sophia M. Uecker on November 2, 1935, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Gaylord, Minn. Sophia preceded him in death on March 13, 1999.
Martin and Sophia farmed together for many years on the family farm. After retiring from farming, they moved to Goodview, Minn. Martin continued to work, and was employed by JC Penney Lawn and Garden Center, Kraeger Coach, and the Stockton Sawmill. His hobbies included woodworking and gardening. Martin will be remembered for his smile and his great sense of humor and fun. He was always willing and eager to help anyone who asked.
Martin was a lifelong and dedicated member of Immanuel Lutheran Church-Silo, where he held many offices and served on the Immanuel Visitor's Group and Immanuel Men's Club. He also served on the Lewiston Creamery Board.
Martin is survived by his daughter, Arline (James) Volkmann, of Winona; granddaughter, Cheryl (John) Mulyck, of Winona; grandson, David (Deborah) Volkmann, of Winona; great-grandchildren, Kalene and Christopher Volkmann; a sister, Edna Burfeind, of Winona; as well as many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, two brothers, Arnold and Victor Burfeind, and two sisters, Helen Stellwagen and Mildred Burfeind.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Immanuel Lutheran Church-Silo, with Rev. William Meilner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Friends may call at the church on Wednesday, April 2, from noon until the time of the service.
Pallbearers will be David Volkmann, Christopher Volkmann, John Mulyck, David Murray, Daniel Murray, and Bruce Volkmann.
Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church-Silo, or to the Sauer Memorial Home.

Ness, James Phillip

James Phillip Ness, 92, of Spring Grove, Minn., died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Tweeten Health Services in Spring Grove.
Funeral services were Tuesday, April 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove with Pastor Robert Stoskopf officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
