Sanders, Steven Rex

Steven Rex Sanders, 52, of rural Utica, Minn., died Tuesday, January 14, 2003, at Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Steve was born November 22, 1950, in Winona, to Roger and Betty (Schaale) Sanders. He was raised in rural Utica and graduated from St. Charles High School in 1969. He and Joleen Mart were married on July 19, 1969, at the Lewiston Church of the Brethren.
Following their marriage, Steve attended Winona Vo-Tech for two years and graduated from the mechanics program. The couple moved to Lanesboro, where he worked for Peterson Motors for four years. They then returned to Utica to farm the Sanders family farm.
Steve loved to farm. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially his fishing trips to Canada. He had a mischievous sense of humor and enjoyed razzing family and friends. He was a member of the Lewiston Church of the Brethren and a regular with the Utica lunch group.
Survivors include his wife, Joleen; a son, Brian (Teresa) Sanders of Utica; two grandsons, Cole and Braden; his parents, Roger and Betty Sanders of Utica; a brother, Tom Sanders of St. Charles, Minn.; and two sisters, Shari Sojka of Utica and Carolyn (Richard) Clemens of Dover, Minn.
A son, Bradley John Sanders, and a sister, Luann Halbakken, preceded Steve in death.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 18, at Lewiston Church of the Brethren, with Rev. John Huffaker officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles.
Hoff Funeral Home's - St. Charles Chapel assisted with the arrangements.

Schultz, John W. "Jack"

John W. "Jack" Schultz, 69, of Goodview, Minn., died Friday, January 17, 2003, at his home.
He was born July 30, 1933, in Winona. He married Carol L. Szuminski. They had two children.
Funeral services will be Monday, January 20, at 1:30 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Winona. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, where members of American Legion Post #9 will conduct military burial rites.
Friends may call Sunday, January 19, from 4-8 p.m. at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, and from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Monday at the church.
Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Daniel, Lloyd Jacob

Lloyd Jacob Daniel, 87, of Winona, died Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Fairview Seminary zNursing Home, Red Wing, Minn. Lloyd was born in Rollingstone, Minn. on Sept. 18, 1915, the son on John and Mary (Schell) Daniel.
He married Alice E. Engler on Oct., 2, 1939, in Altura, Minn.
Lloyd had been a grain buyer and weigher for over 35 years for Bay State Milling, retiring in 1978. He is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Alice; daughters, Karyn Duane, Winona, Pamela (Michael) Mueller, Red Wing, Minn., and son, John Daniel, Fridley, Minn.; four grandchildren, Patrick (Cheryl) Duane, Nicole (Leif) Nelsen, Amanda and Daniel Mueller and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Arnold, four sisters, Della Stachowitz, Florence Stachowitz, Helen Blace and Luella Kieffer.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona, Rev. Joseph Keefe officiating. Entombment was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.
Casket bearers were Patrick and Cheryl Duane, Nicole and Leif Nelsen, Amanda and Daniel Mueller.
Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Mary's Church.

Haugen, William "Bill"

William "Bill" Robert Haugen, 51, of Rushford, died Sunday, January 19, 2003, due to injuries from an automobile accident north of St. Charles, Minn. Bill was born on July 20, 1951, in Winona, Minn., to Robert and Annabelle (Rolbiecki) Haugen. Bill lived most of his life in Rushford and had also lived in California and Milwaukee. He was a 1971 graduate of Rushford High School. On May 23, 1981, Bill married Lori Troke at St. John's Catholic Church in Winona. He had been a member of the U.S. National Guard for six years. Bill worked at Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Winona for 27 years. He was a bartender at the American Legion Club in Rushford as well as running his own fly fishing business, Magic Ring Trout Flies Guide Service. Bill had fishing guide clients from all over the United States. His interests included golfing, hunting, bowling, watching his son, Eric's, sporting events, tinkering on the farm, cutting wood, and especially taking Eric and Bill's friend Jim Rand fly fishing to their favorite spots at Winnebago and South Fork. Bill was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church, Rushford American Legion, and Past President of Trout Unlimited. Bill was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother. We will all miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Lori; mother, Annabelle Haugen of Rushford; son, Eric, at home; daughter, Andrea, at home and her boyfriend, Chad Heuser of Caledonia; one brother, Ron (Annie) Haugen of Lewiston, Minn.; one sister, Ruth (Tom) Pederson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and his favorite dog Major. He was preceded in death by his father. Due to injuries Bill's wife, Lori, sustained from the accident the funeral service will be postponed until Lori is home from the hospital.

Kirkeby, Geraldine

Geraldine Frances Kirkeby, age 80, of Winona died on Monday, January 20, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.
Geraldine was born on March 10, 1922, in Waukon, Iowa, to Clinton Lionel and Gusta Helen (Gjefle) Kelly. On April 24, 1942, she married Orval Harlan Kirkeby in Waukon and he preceded her in death on March 17, 2001.
Geraldine graduated from Waukon High School in 1939. In 1940, she obtained a teaching certificate and taught for 7.5 years at Alamakee County, Iowa. In 1949 they moved to Lewiston, Minn. She graduated from Winona State University in 1954 where she also received the Purple Key Award and then obtained her Master's Degree in 1968. She also taught in Wyattville, Dover and Eyota and finally moved to Winona, retiring after 18 years with Winona Schools.
She was a member of First Congregational Church, Winona, where she was a Trustee. She was a Past President of Delta Kappa Gamma and Winona Area Retired Educators Association. She was a member of the Retired Educators Association of Minnesota, Minnesota Educators Association, the National Educators Association, AARP, Southeastern Retired Educators Association of Minnesota, American Red Cross, and the Historical Society.
She was a past member of the Order of Eastern Star, various PTAs, Board Member of ORC and ARC. She was a volunteer chair at Community Memorial Hospital Escort and helped at Women's Resource and Church Mission Board.
Geraldine enjoyed quilting, sewing, knitting, bowling, volunteering, church work, helping her grandsons, traveling, reading and learning.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Kirkeby, Winona; two sons, Ronald (Catherine) Kirkeby, Winona, and Kenneth Kirkeby, Chino Hills, Calif.; two grandsons, Cory and Kyle; a sister, Nona Hansmeier, Waukon, Iowa; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Orval Harlan, and a brother Vernon.
Memorial services will be Friday, January 24, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church, Winona, with Rev. Rick King officiating. Interment will take place at Waukon Cemetery, Waukon, Iowa.
Friends may call on Thursday, January 23, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Fireside Room of the First Congregational Church, Winona and at the church one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the First Congregational Church, Winona.
Funeral arrangements completed by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.

Martin, Catharine C.

Catharine C. Martin, 104, died Saturday, January 18, 2003, at the St. Anne Extended Care in Winona, Minn. Catharine was born February 11, 1898, in rural Rushford, Minn., to Edward and Mary (Kauphusman) Martin. Catharine spent 10 years in the convent in Mankato, Minn., where she was a member of Tertiary of the Order of St. Dominic. She then went to work at the Pentagon for several years before moving to Winona where she worked at the College of Saint Teresa and taught piano lessons. Catharine was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church in Winona.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Clara, Anna and Gertrude.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Wednesday, January 22, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winona. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Burke Winona Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Pahl, Brother George, FSC, Ph.D.

Former Saint Mary's University president dies at 87
Brother L. George Pahl, FSC, Ph.D., 87, died Jan. 19, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona, Minn. Brother George was former president and professor of biology at then-Saint Mary's College, Winona. He was born Francis Kenneth Pahl April 3, 1915, to Herman and Delores Pahl in Minneapolis, Minn.
He took the name Leonian George Pahl when he joined the De La Salle Christian Brothers Catholic religious order in 1932. His education included degrees from Saint Mary's College, Winona, Minn., 1936, B.S. in biology; De Paul University, Chicago, Ill., 1943, M.S. in biology; University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind., 1953, Ph.D. in biology; and Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., 1977, post-graduate work in bioethics.
Brother George taught biology at De La Salle High School, Chicago, from 1936-42. He then joined the faculty of Saint Mary's College in 1942, where he taught biology until 1969. He was named chair of the department in 1962, and was appointed associate dean of graduate studies in 1968. In 1969, Brother George became the 10th president of Saint Mary's College, succeeding Brother Gregory Robertson, FSC. Brother George served as president until 1976, overseeing the admission of the college's first female students in 1969, the expansion of enrollment and the physical campus, and the reorganization of the college's academic and administrative structure. During his tenure, corporate control and ownership were transferred from the Christian Brothers to a separately incorporated board of trustees, and a Tri-College agreement on student exchange was reached in 1971 that included the College of Saint Teresa and Winona State University. Upon retirement from Saint Mary's, Brother George taught bioethics and radiation biology at De La Salle University in the Philippines.
Brother George was a nationally noted and much-published researcher in radiation biology and river biology. He also served as director and instructor of National Science Foundation's biology summer institutes for high school teachers at Saint Mary's College. Among many honors, he was named an Outstanding Educator of America in 1970.
At the celebration of his 50th anniversary as a Christian Brother, Brother George was called a "brilliant and beloved" teacher by a former student. His colleagues, students, fellow Brothers, and his family and friends are honored to have known him.
Brother George was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Gerald Pahl. He is survived by siblings Eileen (Somers) Pahl; Sister Marian Pahl, MM; Sister Josette Pahl, OP; and Brother Cyril Paul, FSC.
A wake will be held 9 -10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at Saint Thomas More Chapel, Saint Mary's University, Winona. The funeral Mass is at 11 a.m. A Christian burial service (weather permitting) follows at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Winona.
Memorials may be directed to: Development Office, Saint Mary's University, 700 Terrace Heights #21, Winona, MN 55987. Gifts may be designated to the Biology Department, or to the Herman and Delores Pahl Scholarship Fund.

Pollema, James S.

James "Jim" S. Pollema, 96, of Rochester and formerly of Houston, Minn., died Saturday, January 18, 2003, at the Whitewater Healthcare center in St. Charles, Minn. Jim was born on October 2, 1906, in Houston to Geritt and Jeltje (Hannenburg) Pollema. He was raised in Houston and was a Houston area farmer. He served in the U.S. Army from April of 1941 to September of 1949, serving in France, Africa, Holland and Germany. On June 7, 1955, Jim married Mechthilda Schoenmeyer in Germany. Following their marriage they lived in both Houston and Rochester. He was a member of the Looney Valley Lutheran Church. Jim loved music and wildlife. He was very involved in the moving of wild turkeys to Southeastern Minnesota from Missouri. Jim is survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, Jacob and Clause Pollema, and two sisters, Rachel Decker and Ada Stinson. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22, at the Looney Valley Lutheran Church in rural Houston with the Rev. Kris Fahey officiating. Burial will be in the Silver Creek Cemetery in rural Houston. Friends may call from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.

Schultz, John W.

John W. "Jack" Schultz, 69, of 4757 West Sixth Street, Goodview, died Friday, January 17, 2003, at his home. Jack was born in Winona on July 30, 1933, to Ralph W. and Lucy A. (Moody) Schultz.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1953 to 1956. He transfered to the U.S. Air Force and served his country until December of 1964.
He worked for Trane Company of LaCrosse, Wis., as a parts checker for 31 years, retiring on Jan. 1, 1996.
Jack married Julianna Lederer in West Germany. They were later divorced. He then married Carol L. Szuminski on June 30, 2001, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Winona, of which Jack is a current member.
He is survived by his wife, Carol, son, Steven (Jessie) Schultz, Stockton, Minn., daughter, Bridget (Richard) Spidle, Osceola, Iowa, five grandchildren: Damon and Shayna Schultz, Colter, Ashton and Bradley Spidle; a brother, James (Pat) Schultz, Winona; sisters, Ruth Holte, Dorothy Kantowski, both of Winona, and Marilyn Sampson, Hokah, Minn.; mother-in-law, Virginia Schuminski, Winona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Joseph, a daughter, Stephanie, three brothers, Earl, Donald & Raymond and a sister, Glennys.
Funeral services for Jack were on Monday, January 20, 2003, at 1:30 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Winona, Rev. William Flesch officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, where members of American Legion Post #9 conducted military burial rites.
Casket bearers were Joe and Pete Schultz, Steve Stinski, Lamar Anderson, Keith Foster and Roger Sobeck.
Honorary bearers were his dogs, Cody, Cuddles, Precious Esther-lili and Monty. Arrangements by Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Stever, Olga Louise

Olga Louise Stever, 94, of the Sauer Memorial Home and formerly of 356 East Howard St., Winona, died Saturday, January 18, 2003, at the Sauer Home. She was born in Winona on December 30, 1908, to Charles and Louise (Zimdars) Stever.
Olga attended schools in Winona and lived here all her life. She worked as a German translation clerk at Leicht Press and later for J.R. Watkins Company. She retired from Watkins in 1973 after 30 years of service.
For many years she was a golfer at Westfield Golf Club and was an ardent card player at the club. She did volunteer work at Community Memorial Hospital and at Sauer Memorial Home. She is a member of St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church, where she participated in the church sewing circle for many years.
Olga was an enthusiastic traveler covering much of the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and France. She enjoyed researching areas of her own travel and of other family members. In addition to traveling, golfing, card playing and volunteering, her pastime activities included reading, gardening, sewing and crossword puzzles.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Otto, Arnold and Carl, a sister, Leona Behrns; two nephews, Frank and William Stever; one niece, Barbara Behrns and a grandniece, Martha Stever.
Olga is survived by nieces, Janet (Dave) Algren, Stillwater, Minn., Diane Behrns, West Allis, Wis., Mary (Gary) Braatz, Susan (Ralph) Haedtke, Carole Stever, Elaine (Dave) Wieczorek, all of Winona; Nancy Stever, Las Vegas, Nev.; and niece-in-law, Eileen Stever, No. St. Paul, Minn. Nephews, Don (Marina) Behrns, Iron Ridge, Wis.; Jerry (Sharon) Behrns, Appleton, Wis.; Roger (Carol) Behrns, Muskego, Wis.; George (Marion) Stever, Rochester, Minn.; Kent (Janet) Stever, Lakeville, Minn.; Richard (Marilyn) Stever, Pine River, Minn.; and Robert (Julie) Stever, Racine, Minn., twenty-seven great-nieces and nephews and many great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Olga were Tuesday, January 21, 2003, at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m., Rev. David Henslin of St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church officiating.
Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Memorials may be directed to Sauer Memorial Home.
