Mish, Helen M.

Helen M. Mish, 83, of Pigeon Falls, Wis., and formerly of Arcadia, Wis., died Monday, February 24, 2003, at Tri-County Memorial Hospital, Whitehall, Wis.
She was born June 16, 1919, in Independence, Wis., to Joseph and Florence (Koval) Ressel. She married Ignatz Mish on June 27, 1938, in Independence. He died October 2, 2002.
Helen was a farmer and a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in rural Arcadia.
She is survived by four sons, Joseph (Brenda) Mish of Phoenix, Ariz., Donald Mish of Scottsdale, Ariz., Le- Roy (Doreen) Mish of Bee Town, Wis., and Willis (Pat) Mish of Dalton, Wis.; two daughters, Lillian (Stanley) Weist of Lancaster, Wis., and Marian (Gene) Garrison of Winona; three sisters, Marion Andre of Arcadia, Catherine (Cliff) Johnson of Madison, and Florence (Gerald) Slaby of Independence; twenty-nine grandchildren; thirty-two step-grandchildren; fifty-two great-grandchildren; twenty-five step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ignatz, two grandsons, and a brother, Lewis J. Ressel Sr.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 1, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in North Creek, with Rev. Patrick Umberger officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Killian Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Salwey, John E.

John E. Salwey, 65, of Dodge/Trempealeau, Wis., died Monday, February 24, 2003, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, Arcadia, Wis.
He was born April 8, 1937, in Arcadia, to Edmund and Cecelia (Sydlo) Salwey. He married Dianna Duell at St. Bartholemew Catholic Church in Trempealeau on November 25, 1958.
He had been a truck driver for Kujak Transport and worked as a production worker at Northern Engraving Corp.
John is survived by four sons, Richard of Stockton, Minn., Cory (Pam) of Winona, Pat (Debra) of Galesville, Wis., and Michael of Winona; five grandchildren, Samantha, Jillyan, Joshua, Ashley, and Nicholas; four sisters, Marlene Weaver of Arcadia, Diane (Arlen) Jessen of Tulare, S.D., Gloria (Bill) Schwertel of Winona, and Charlotte (Tom) Solberg of Arcadia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Joseph, and his wife, Dianna Weild.
Services were Thursday, February 27, at Killian Funeral Home with Rev. Patrick Umberger officiating.
Killian Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Coleman, Sister Colman

Sister Colman Coleman, 101, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minn., who served as an educator, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at Assisi Heights, Rochester.
Born Winifred Coleman on November 23, 1901, in Rochester, Minn., Sister Colman entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1926, from St. John Parish. She made profession of vows in 1927, and began her teaching ministry at Sacred Heart Parish, Waseca. She taught in various schools in Minnesota including Caledonia and Owatonna. In Rochester she taught at St. John School from 1940-41, 1948-50, and Lourdes High School from 1956-58. She also taught in Norfolk, Neb. Sister Colman ministered in the business office at St. Anne Hospice, Winona, for ten years. She retired to Assisi Heights in 1986, and celebrated her diamond jubilee that year.
Sister Colman is survived by her Franciscan Community.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, February 28, in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Quinn, Sister Bernetta

Sister Bernetta Quinn, 87, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minn., who served as an author and educator, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at Assisi Heights, Rochester.
Born Roselyn Viola Quinn on September 19, 1915, in Lake Geneva, Wis., Sister Bernetta entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1934, from St. Francis Parish, Lake Geneva. She made profession of vows in 1937, and began her teaching ministry at St. Priscilla Parish, Chicago. She taught in Winona and Austin, Minn. She earned a master's degree in English from the Catholic University in 1944, and in 1952, a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She taught English at many colleges, including Norfolk State, St. Andrew's Presbyterian College in North Carolina, and University of Sacred Heart in Tokyo, Japan. She also taught at the College of St. Teresa, Winona, from 1954-67. In addition to her career, Sister studied abroad, did research in Ireland, wrote hundreds of poems, published two books, and wrote many book reviews of famous authors, including Ezra Pound. She retired to Assisi Heights in 1983, and celebrated her diamond jubilee in 1997.
Sister Bernetta is survived by her Franciscan Community.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, February 27, in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Arnold, George C.

George C. Arnold, 89, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at Sumner Trace Hospital Carmel, Ind.
George was born February 21, 1914, at Bokhoma, Okla., to George and Della Mae Altenbaumer Arnold.
He was a teacher, high school principal and an Education Director for the Federal Government. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Eleanor Suhr on June 22, 1949, at Fountain City, Wis. She preceded him in death in 1990.
He is survived by daughters, Lynnell (Phil) Parisi of Stafford, Virginia, and Elouise (Charles) Scharbrough of Indianapolis, Ind.; sons, Carlton (Vicky) Arnold of Louisville, Ky., and C. Alfred (Gerda) Arnold of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren, Lauren and Alexandria Arnold, Emily and Marilla Arnold, Kristen and Paul Parisi, Sarah and Beth Herd, and Andrew Scharbrough; and two sisters.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers, and four sisters.
Funeral services were Friday, February 28, at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home, with Rev. James Nelson of St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church officiating. Spring burial will be in Fountain City Public Cemetery, Fountain City, Wis.

Olson, Verneil

Verneil Margaret Mary Ann Olson, Red Wing, Minn., died Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor.
Funeral services were Saturday, March 1, at United Lutheran Church, with Rev. Randall Johnson officiating. Burial was in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.

Foegen, Gladys Hannon

Gladys Hannon Foegen, 92, of Arcadia, died on Wednesday, February 26, 2003, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Arcadia Nursing Horne. She was born on April 14, 1910, in the Twp. of Waumandee, Wis., to Adolph and Mary (Kindschi) Reglin. She married George Hannon February, 1929. He died on June 12, 1966. She later married Clifford Foegen on May 26, 1973, and he died November 4, 1996.
Gladys was a farmer and homemaker. She had been a cook and custodian for the Arcadia Public School. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and the W.E.L.C.A.
Gladys is survived by one son, Dallas (Dorothy) Hannon of Arcadia, one daughter, Darlene (Roy) Marquette of Fountain City, one sister, Melvina (Willard) Salwey of Cochrane, 5 grandchildren, Michael (Christine) Hannon, Cheryl Hannon, Chris (Toni) Nisbit, Brian (Sue) Nisbit, and Daniel (Angie) Nisbit; eight great-grandchildren, Becky, Matthew Kuhn, Krystal (Richard) Pichler, Morgin and Jordin Hannon, Olivia, Cole, and Brianna Nisbit. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, and a granddaughter, Gloria Hannon Kuhn.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 3, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lamoine Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Fountain City public cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday at the Killian Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. where there will be a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. They may also call on Monday at the funeral home from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Casket bearers will be her grandsons, Brian, Chris, Daniel Nisbit, Michael Hannon, Matthew and Gary Kuhn.
Killian Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Laudon, Emaline

Emaline Laudon, 93, died Sunday, February 23, 2003, at Whitewater Health Care Center in St. Charles, Minn. Emaline was born February 12, 1910, in Aitkin, Minn., to Erick and Emma Elina (Johnson) Olson. On March 3, 1935, she married Delmar Jack Laudon in Rushford, Minn. They lived in Dover, Ironton, and St. Charles, Minn. Emaline was a member of the St. Charles United Methodist Church, a 50-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary in St. Charles and a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star. She worked in the Post Office in Dover where she was the acting Postmistress during WWII. She also worked for a mining company in Ironton, Minn., and Mayo Clinic in Rochester. At Mayo Emaline worked in statistics and epidemiology, retiring in 1975. Emaline enjoyed needlework, cooking, reading, traveling and spending time with her family. Emaline's husband, Delmar, died May 19, 1987.
Survivors include her two daughters, Barbara (Dave) Heim of St. Charles, Minn., and Betty (Tim) Miller of Belle Plain, Minn.; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Edward and Erland, and one sister, Elizabeth.
Funeral services are planned for Monday, March 3, 2003, at the St. Charles United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Rev. Sharon Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Dover, Minn. Friends may call at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ St. Charles Chapel on Sunday from 2-5:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Butenhoff, Sophia S.

Sophia S. Butenhoff, age 91, of rural Winona, died on Friday, February 7, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.
Sophia was born on October 8, 1911, in Winona County, Minn. to August and Sophia (Kilian) Jilk. On October 12, 1932, she married Edwin Augustine Butenhoff Sr. at the Cathedral in Winona. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1984.
Sophia was a life long resident of the Winona area. She and Edwin farmed in Hillsdale Township for many years. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Minnesota City, Minn., and the St. Theresa's Circle. She volunteered in many ways at the church, but one of her favorite was growing flowers and using them for decorating at the church. Her faith and family were the top priority in her life. Sophia was a nature lover and she enjoyed birdwatching, hunting and fishing. She also spent many hours playing cards with family and friends.
She is survived by four sons, Edwin Jr. (Nora) Butenhoff, rural Minnesota City, Gerald Buten-hoff, Albert (Jaclyn) Butenhoff, and Robert (JoAnne) Butenhoff, all of rural Winona; three daughters, Delores (Donald) Wittenberg, Rochester, Theresa (Bernie) Siebenaler, rural St. Charles and Pat (Gus) Verdick, Minnesota City; 31 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; five siblings, Agnes Evanson, Winona, August Jilk Jr., rural Winona, Sister Marie Louise Jilk, Techny, Ill., Mary Jilk, Goodview, Minn. and Sylvester Jilk, Artesia, Calif. and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter Mary Van Riper, two grandchildren, eight siblings: Francis, Gerald, Leo, Anthony, Norbert, Joseph, Albert and Sister Grace Jilk.
Funeral mass was Wednesday, February 12, 2003, at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Minnesota City with Rev. Ed Cunningham, officiating. Interment was at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Lewiston, Minn.
Casket bearers were her grandchildren: Tim VanRiper, John Butenhoff, John Siebenaler, Thomas Siebenaler, Mark Butenhoff, Mike Butenhoff, Stephen Wittenberg and Melissa Jacob.
Honorary casket bearers were the rest of her grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were completed by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.

Duden, Alvin E.

Alvin E. Duden, age 85, of Lake City died February 17, 2003, at the Lake City Nursing Home.
He was born March 12, 1917, in Gilford Township in Wabasha County to Lawrence & Johannah (Gluesen) Duden. He grew up in Gilford Township on the family farm. On August 30, 1939, he married Gladys Von Helmst. After they were married they lived and farmed in Lake Township in rural Lake City. In 1974 they retired from farming and moved to Frontenac, Minnesota, where they lived until 1978 when they moved to Lake City. After retiring he worked in maintenance at the Red Wing Shoe and Pepin Apartments in Lake City. At last he worked at Great River Homes in Lake City from 1989 to 2000. He also had Al's Lawn Mowing Services in Lake City. His wife Gladys died May 14, 1994. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Lake City.
He is survived by three daughters, Gloria (Dennis) Issendorf of Lake City, Eunice (Allen) Blattner of Lake City, Dinah (John) Making of Lake City; two sons, Ervin (Norma) of Winona, Gary of Winona; 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; a very special pet Sparky; two brothers LeRoy (Hazel) Duden of Red Wing, Leslie Duden of Maiden Rock, Wis.; five sisters, Marion (Arno) Burr of River Falls, Wis., Gladys (Elmer) Truebanbach of Mankato, Minn., Delores (David) Sanborn of Minneapolis, Minn., Darlene (Phil) Griffith of Marlow, Okla., and Florence Plank of Mazeppa, Minn. His wife, parents, one sister, four brothers, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Lake City with the Rev. Alton Larsen and Laurie Stoeger co-officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery in Lake City. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may also call one hour before the services at the church on Friday.

Haase, Belva June

Belva June Haase, 93, went to meet her Lord on Saturday, February 15, 2003.
She had recently been a resident of Lake Winona Manor, formerly living in Goodview.
Belva was born on June 13, 1909, in Winona County, Minn., the daughter of Earl and Addie (Whitlock) Putnam.
She worked for City Service Oil in her early years. On Sept. 1, 1934, she was united in marriage to Clarence A. Haase at Wabasha, Minn. He preceded her in death on Sept. 14, 1971. She was a member of Goodview Trinity Lutheran Church and also of Widowed Persons Service.
Belva was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who will be missed by her family; sons, David (Lois) Haase, Winona, John (Margaret) Haase, Spring, Texas; daughter, Ruth (Jerry) Dalleska, Winona; twelve grandchildren and twenty five great-grandchildren.
She was a giving, caring person. Her family was her whole life. She loved life, playing cards, square dancing, traveling in general, but especially to Arizona and Hawaii. She also loved to cook and bake.
Belva was precede in death by her parents, husband, a grandson, a great-granddaughter and a brother.
Funeral services to celebrate Belva's life will be held on Wed., Feb. 19, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Goodview Trinity Lutheran Church, Rev. Tony Hansen officiating. Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., then on Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Memorial gifts may be given to Goodview Trinity Lutheran Church or the American Cancer Society.
