Harkness, Aidan Fritz

Aidan Fritz Harkness, 28-day-old son of Candice Mayberry and Fritz Harkness, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at his home, 762 East Second Street. Aidan was born on January 17, 2003, in Winona.
Aidan's family are his parents; a brother, Damien; paternal grandparents, Phillip and Renee Harkness, Altura, Minn.; paternal grandmother, Chris Harkness, St. Paul, Minn.; maternal grandparents, Barbara and Jim Dropps, Winona; paternal greatgrandfather, Lloyd Harkness, Northfield, Minn.; paternal greatgrandparents, Richard and Carol Cover, Northfield, Minn.; maternal great-grandfather, Robert Jackson, Torrance, Calif., and maternal great-grandmother, Lola Jackson, Hartville, Mo.; one uncle, Robert Mayberry, Albertville, Minn.; four aunts, Cassandra Mayberry, Winona; Cheyenne and Caitlin Ruble, Winona, and Mary Harkness, Albertville, Minn.
Aidan was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Mayberry, and his paternal great-grandmother, Mayves Harkness.
Funeral services for Aidan will be on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at 1:00 p.m.. at Pleasant Valley Ev. Free Church, Revs. Michelle Hargrave and Rick Iglesias officiating.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, Minn. Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6-9 p.m., then on Wednesday from Noon to 1:00 p.m. at the church.
Casket bearers will be Jason Witt and Robert Mayberry.

Lossen, Marjorie

Marjorie Safranek Lossen, 81, of Winona passed away on February 15, 2003, Marjorie was born to Henry and Emma (Gerson) Safranek on March 14, 1921, in Winona.
She married Roy H. Lossen on June 28, 1952. He preceded her in death on April 18, 1987.
Marjorie graduated valedictorian from Winona Senior High School; received her bachelor's degree from the College of St. Teresa and her master's degree from Winona State University.
Marge dedicated her life to her family and her teaching. She taught science at Escanaba Jr. High School, Escanaba, Mich. and Washington-Kosciusko and Winona Junior High School until her retirement in 1987.
Her passions were her family, golfing, boating and traveling the world.
Marge was an active member of Central United Methodist Church, served on the Board of Directors of the United Way, and was honorary chairperson for the American Heart Association.
She is survived by three sons, Greg (Rebecca) and Kurt (Joni) of Winona, Brad (Joan) of Dresbach, Minn.; eight grandchildren, Thor, Max, Alex, Lucas, Ashley, Kelly, Jennifer and Amy; two sisters, Jeanette (Mel) Hicks, Rochester, Minn., Beverly (Henry) Polichnowski, New Bern, N.C.; one brother, C.H. "Bud" (Jean) Safranek, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, and a granddaughter, Katherine Helen.
Funeral services for Marge will be on Friday, Feb. 21, at 10:00 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church, 114 West Broadway, Winona. Rev. Mary Hurmence will officiate.
Interment will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minn. Friends may call on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, from 4-7 p.m. at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, then on Friday from 9-10 a.m. at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Central United Methodist Church or the American Heart Association.

Matteson, Robert C.

Robert C. Matteson, 72, of 1078 West Broadway, Winona, Minn., died Sunday, February 16, 2003, at his home. Robert was born in Chicago, Ill., on Feb. 2, 1931, to Carlton and Elsa (Piehl) Matteson.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Upon his discharge he began working for Lockheed-Martin in Burbank, Calif.
He then worked as a film technician for Holywood Film Industries and several other film industries. Following that he worked for Chicago Title Co. of Phoenix, Ariz., from which he retired in 1999.
Robert married Joan Spielman, they were divorced 1975. He then married Sherri Foxworthy, and they were later divorced.
Robert is survived by his sons, Keith (Betsy) Matteson, Winona, Minn., Garry (Donna) Matteson, Fontana, Calif., a daughter, Chantal Matteson, Dallas, Texas; eight grandchildren, Grant, Nikita, Kyle, David, Deanna, Garry Jr., Bailey and Brilee, two brothers, Paul Matteson, Lancaster, Calif. and David (Mickey) Matteson, Grass Valley, Calif.
Preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
Memorial services for Robert will be on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Bible Church, 901 W. Broadway, Winona, Minn., Rev. Dale Howe officiating.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the Alzheimer's Foundation.

Pierce, Hazel

Hazel Pierce, 93, of Lewiston and formerly of rural Utica, died Sunday evening February 16, 2003, at the Lewiston Villa.
Hazel was born March 31, 1909, in rural Utica to August and Mabel (Lewis) Roth. She and Simmons Pierce were married September 9, 1931, on the Roth family farm in rural Utica. They farmed in rural Utica their entire married lives. Simmons died February 19, 1992.
Hazel was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Utica and had served as an elder. She was an organizer of the Utica Victory 4-H Club. In 1925 she showed the champion lamb at the state fair. In 2002 she was recognized for being a part of four generations of 4-H. She and Simmons were King and Queen of the Winona County Fair in 1988; she was inducted into Fair's Hall of Fame and was Winona County outstanding Senior Citizen in 1976. Hazel was a charter member of the South Utica Homemakers. She had served on the Farmers Community Park Board, was a longtime Farm Bureau member and past president of its women's committee, member and past Worthy Matron of the Sunshine Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Hazel was an avid reader and card player.
Survivors include five children, Frances (Cleyson) Plank; Wesley (Janice) Pierce both of Lewiston; Carlos Pierce of St. Charles; Norma Laqua of Lewiston; and Dale (Ann) Pierce of Utica, eight grandchildren; Dean, Renee, Doug, Jess, Kevin, Sara, Adam, and Derek, four great-grandchildren; Jeremy, Andrea, Krystal and Dominic, a brother, William Roth of Lewiston, and a sister-in-law, Helen Pierce of Lewiston. In addition to her husband, two grandsons, Ricky and Timothy Pierce, a great-granddaughter Melissa Anderson and a sister Anna Abbott have preceded her in death.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Utica with the Rev. Tim Gerarden officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. They may also call one hour before services on Thursday at the church. There will be an Eastern Star Service at 7:45 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the donor's choice.

Richardson, Elsie

Elsie P. Richardson, 95, of Lake Winona Manor, died Friday, Feb. 14, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor. She was born in Mount Auburn, Iowa, on August 27, 1907, the daughter of James R. and Ella H. (Burrows) Rodman.
She married John Richardson on Nov. 4, 1937, at Greene, Iowa. He preceded her in death on May 13, 1979.
Elsie has been a resident of Winona since 1962, and is a member of Central United Methodist Church of Winona.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Faye Martin (Alan), Davenport, Iowa., Frank Wittenberger, Jr. (Evon), Elgin, Ill., Kenneth Wittenberger, Davenport, Iowa; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Vera Knutson (Glenn), Fredericksburg, Iowa., Edith Schmidt, Clarksville, Iowa, and Ethel Wilhelm, Allison, Iowa. two son-in-laws, Joseph Schultz, Jr., Rollingstone, Minn. and Frank Wittenberger, Davenport, Iowa.; three brother-in-laws, Stan Richardson, Raliegh, N.C., Carl Smith, Ionia, Iowa., and Ardean Landers, Greene, Iowa.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husand, parents, two daughters, Lois Olson Schultz and Eileen Wittenberger, three brothers and three sisters.
At the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, a funeral service was held at 6:30 p.m. with Rev. Mary Hurmence of Central United Methodist Church officiating.
Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, Iowa.

Sweazey, Esther Fletcher

Esther Fletcher Sweazey, 83, died Friday, February 14, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital of a cranial aneurysm.
Esther was born in Winona on July 2, 1919, the eldest of five children, to Clarence and Mildred Fletcher. She attended Winona Public Schools and graduated from Winona Senior High School in 1938. She was employed at the Candy Box, as well as Winona State University. In 1941, she married Jim Sweazey.
They moved to Chicago, where they lived for three years until the time came for her husband, Jim, to go into the Armed Services. They moved back to Winona in1944, while Jim was in the Navy. She parented their two daughters alone while Jim served his country. Jim and Esther lived in Winona for the rest of their married life, which totaled 62 years.
She was active in the Girl Scouts and Winona Flower and Garden Club, where her artistic abilities benefited others. She was a capable artistic painter and her paintings have brought joy into the lives of many.
Esther loved children, and children loved her. She found great joy in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was a great gardener, growing both flowers and vegetables which she canned for family and friends. Nobody made a better raspberry pie than Esther.
She and her husband are members of First Congregational Church and she was active in many church activities including its Women's Fellowship.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her loving husband, Jim; two daughters, Sue (V.R.) Abrahamson of Harmony, Minn., and Roxanne (Robert) Abbas of Plymouth, Minn.; a son, Randy (Sharon) Sweazey of New Hope; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Edwin (Phyllis) Fletcher of Winona; and Eugene (Angela) Fletcher of Topeka, Kan.; two sisters, Elaine Wood of Stockton, N.Y., and Mary (Harry) Eagleton of Inverness, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, February 18, at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Rick King officiating. Burial was in the Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Lewiston, Minn.
Casketbearers were her grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Tami, Todd, Darren, Jason, Weston and Andrea.

Kobus, Leo John, Jr.

Leo John Kobus, Jr., formerly of Glen Mary, Winona, passed away Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Mercy Hospital, Coon Rapids, Minn.
He was born September 3, 1920, in Winona, to Leo Sr. and Cecilia (Czapiewski) Kobus. He married Viola Ozmun at St. Joseph's Church in Winona on September 19, 1944 She died August 3, 1991.
Leo was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish and the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9.
He was a truck driver for local trucking companies until his retirement.
Leo served his country in the U.S. Air Force in World War II.
He is survived by a daughter, Sharon (Dave) Lunde of Winona; a son, James (Karen) Kobus of St. Francis, Minn.; four grandchildren, Cynthia (John) Colvin, Lisa Lunde of Eagan, Minn., Brian (Melissa) Kobus, East Bethel, and Derrick Kobus of St. Francis; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Kobus of Minnesota City, Minn.; four sisters, Irene Kobus and Lorraine Kane, both of Winona, Alice Boreta of Las Vegas, Nev., and Judy (Don) Kowalewski of Trempealeau, Wis.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a brother and a sister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. Shawn T. Haremza officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the American Legion, will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Preliminary services will be at 10 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Robert Ozmun Jr., Dave Lunde, Brian Kobus, Derrick Kobus, John Calvin and John Ozmun.
Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9 of Winona.

Pampuch, James Joseph

James Joseph Pampuch, 59, of 129 Sunnyside Lane, died Saturday, February 15, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born April 15, 1943, in Arcadia, Wis., to Joseph R. and Theresa A. (Steller) Pampuch. He married Mary M. Bambenek on October 28, 1978, in Winona.
He was employed by Coca Cola Bottling Co., on the Wisconsin route for 43 years.
James was a member of the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts. He will be remembered for his love of model trains and the enjoyment of woodworking.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Mary Pampuch, of Winona; his two children from a previous marriage; and his mother-in-law, Margaret Bambenek, of Winona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
Funeral services will be Thursday, February 20, at 11 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home, with Sister Val Kilian officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home, with a Christian Wake Service by Mary Jo Keiper at 7:45 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Keith Nelton, Dick McElmury, John Schueler, Alan Bambenek, Jeremy Bobo, and Ron Steller.
Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Bobo, Steve Larson, Amy and Dana McElmury, Allison and Amber Nelton and Denise Bambenek.
