Johnson, Maryjane L.
Maryjane L. Johnson, 93, died Sunday, February 16, 2003, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare.
She was born December 10, 1909, in Duluth, Minn., to George Sr. and Mary (Lewinski) Eggers. She married Howard E. Johnson on October 5, 1928, in Winona. He died February 9, 1973.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Parish and the Eagles Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Eugene (Marilyn) Johnson of Stockton, Minn., and George (Mary Lou) Johnson of Winona; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine Boddy of Pasco, Wash.; and a daughter-in-law, Ruth Johnson of Winona.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a son, Gerald, two infant children, three sisters and two brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. Friday, February 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 1 p.m. until time of the Mass, at the Commons of St. Mary's Church.
Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren.

Vongroven, Garland "Gary"
Garland "Gary" Vongroven, 74, of Route 4, Winona (Cedar Valley), died Sunday, February 16, 2003, at his home.
Gary was born March 24, 1928, to Lewis and Laura (Goodno) Vongroven in Allamakee County, Iowa. He attended Waterloo Ridge rural school as well as Waterloo Ridge Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed.
He worked as a farmer most of his life, farming in Pleasant Valley for 28 years. He also worked for the Housing and Redevelopment Authority for 17 years, retiring in 1991.
On June 6, 1951, he married Marjorie Ann Christopherson at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
He served as chairman of the Pleasant Valley School Board for 13 years, until its consolidation. He belonged to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, serving as a Sunday School teacher, usher, and vestry member. He was a Fire Warden for 40 years. He also served as president of the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Association since 1980. He was a member of the Winona County Old Settlers, former member of the Red Men's Club and Sons of Norway. He enjoyed woodworking, feeding the birds, watching all wildlife, playing cards, meeting his brothers and friends for coffee, reading, history, and watching the Discovery Channel.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, of Cedar Valley; two sons, Steven (Lynn) of Mora, Minn., and Scott (Pam) of Canton, S.D.; four daughters, Kristen (Alan) Bielema of Wadena, Minn., Laurie (Willis) Bale of Eyota, Minn., Lynn (Charles) Harstad of Chatfield, Minn., and Kari (Kenny) Crook of Holmen, Wis.; fourteen grandchildren: Matthew, Brett and Clinton (Steven and Lynn); B.J. and Abbey (Kristen and Alan); Amanda (Joe) Fogarty and Anthony (Laurie and Willis); Joshua and Sara (Lynn and Charles); Kyle and Shelby (Scott andPam); and Kira, Olivia, and Anya (Kari and Kenny); two brothers: Silas (Beulah) Vongroven of Canton, Minn., and Lester (Alvina) Vongroven of Spring Grove, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Mary Cady and Karen Haedtke of Winona; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Dale and Norman, and brothers-in-law, Jack Cady and Ervin Haedtke.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 20, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with Rev. Maggie Rose Muldoon officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home where there will be a closing prayer at 8 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church after 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Casketbearers will be Gary's grandsons, Matthew, Brett, Clinton, Brian Joseph, Anthony, Joshua and Kyle.

Bielefeldt, Melvin A. "Red"
Melvin A. "Red" Bielefeldt, 64, of Gilmanton, Wis., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at the American Lutheran Home in Mondovi, Wis.
He was born May 30, 1938, in the Town of Gilmanton, Buffalo County, Wis., to Helmuth and Elfa (Michaels) Bielefeldt.
He was a U.S. Army veteran. He loved riding and working with his horses.
Survivors include five sisters, Mildred (Eldon) Adams of Alma, Wis., Bernice Jones of Reinbeck, Iowa, Delores Bielefeldt of Winona, Jane Lorenz of Buffalo City, Wis., and Peggy Benoit of Cochrane, Wis.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, three brothers, one niece, and one nephew.
Funeral services were Friday, March 21, at the Stohr-Hagen-Wozney Funeral Home in Alma, with Rev. Joel Bacon officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Forrest-Gunderson-Klevgard American Legion Post #264 of Gilmanton, was in the Gilmanton Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerry Bauer, Gary Amidon, Morris Amidon, Larry Rud, Dean Johnson, and Bob Bauer.
Honorary pallbearers were David Bauer, Gary Bauer, Leland Johnson, and Ben Seltrecht.

Riska, Hubert C.
Hubert C. Riska, 76, of 953 East Fourth St., died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor.
He was born November 30, 1926, in Winona, to Clemens and Bertha (Hill) Riska. He married Helen E. Malotke. She died January 10, 1994.
He was employed at RTP for 27 years, prior to his retiring. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Hubert was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish.
He is survived by a daughter, Tammy Riska of Winona; and two sisters, Dorothy Dionysius and Bertha "Bussy" Modjeski, both of Winona.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, March 24, at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Friends may call Monday from 10 a.m. until time of the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Wieczorek, Lawrence S. "Sam"
Lawrence S. "Sam" Wieczorek, 77, of Buffalo City, Wis., died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Saturday, March 22, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial, with military honors provided by the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Buffalo City, was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Riebau, Sylvia
Sylvia Riebau, 85, of 358 East Sarnia St., Sugar Loaf Apartments, and formerly of 520 East Belleview, died Thursday, March 20, 2003, in the Intensive Care Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.
Sylvia was born April 11, 1917, in Peterson, Minn., to Albert and Alice Bye Olness.
She attended the Peterson Public School, graduating from high school in 1934. She received an elementary education certificate from Winona Teachers College in 1936. She taught in Fillmore County rural schools and the Peterson Public School.
Sylvia also was employed by the W.T. Grant Co. in Winona, and the Winona Daily News. She retired in September of 1980.
She married Forrest Paulson on June 15, 1940. He died June 10, 1944. She married Louis Riebau on June 11, 1955. He died May 15, 1968.
Sylvia was a member of Central Lutheran Church and its women's organizations; Nor-Win Lodge #505, Sons of Norway; and Friends of the Winona Public Library.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands.
She is survived by one brother, Arland (Betty) Olness of Stewartville, Minn.; three nieces, Dawn (Kevin) Warren of Winona, Debbie (David) Turnquist of Eyota, Minn., and Deanna (Kevin) Brossard of West Concord, Minn.; one nephew, Doug (Robin) Olness of Rochester, Minn.; fourteen great-nephews; seven great-nieces; one great-great-niece; and one great-great-nephew.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, at Central Lutheran Church, with Rev. Michelle Rem officiating. Burial will be in West Grace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Peterson, Minn.
Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 9 a.m. until services.
Casketbearers will be Chris, Josh and Jake Warren, Derrick Turnquist, and Ryan and Chad Brossard.
Memorials may be directed to Central Lutheran Church.

Motszko, George J.
George J. Motszko, 62, of Galesville, Wis., passed away after a short, courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, March 20, 2003, at Franciscan Skemp Healthcare Nursing Home in Arcadia, Wis.
He was born in Arcadia on September 14, 1940, to John and Monica (Suchla) Motszko. On September 21, 1968, George married Anita Schwertel.
George was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving his country from 1963-1965. He was a member of the Tickfer-Erickson American Legion Post #17 of Arcadia and of St. Bartholomew's Parish in Trempealeau, Wis. George enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and watching sports.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Motszko, of Galesville; two sons, Capt. John (Jodi) Motszko, of Kileen, Texas, and Mark (Sharon) Motszko, of Trempealeau; three sisters, Marion Waldera, Joan (Vilas) Hanson, and Rosalie Weltzien, all of Arcadia; and one brother, Dennis Motszko, of Arcadia.
Preceding George in death were his parents.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 24, at St. Bartholomew's Parish in Trempealeau, with Rev. Robert Wagner officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Trempealeau.
Friends may call from 3:00 -8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Wozney Funeral Home in Arcadia, where there will be a 7:00 p.m. Prayer Service. Friends may also call from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Monday, at the church.
Serving as casket bearers will be Dan Motszko, Gary Waldera, Dean Weltzien, Brian Brenengen, Chris Schwertel, and Lavern Milek.

Fritchman, Earl R. "Bud"
Earl R. "Bud" Fritchman, 81, of 508 Chatfield St., Winona, passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2003, surrounded by his family, after a short battle with cancer.
Earl was born January 16, 1922, in Pequot Lakes, Minn., to Earl and Mary Tuffs Fritchman. He married Joan C. Jenks on August 15, 1946.
He served his country during World War II in the Army Signal Corps, stationed in Calcutta, India.
Earl and Jo lived many years in different states before settling in Winona in January 1974.
He is a member of McKinley United Methodist Church and the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9.
He worked for Winona Knitting Mills until retiring in 1987.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rose Marie, and a daughter-in-law, Barb.
He is survived by his wife, Jo; children, Nancy Sawyer, of Phoenix, Ariz., Peggy (Dennis) Schaible, of Minnesota City, Minn., Russel Fritchman, of Maple Grove, Minn., Janet (Todd) Wilts, of Phoenix, Betty Thilmany, of Winona, Caron Brown (Mike) Bauer, of St. Charles, Minn., and Mary (Jim) Hemmelman, of Winona; special family friend, Karen Fisher, of Phoenix; twenty-one grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Henry (Kay) Fritchman, of Bloomington, Minn., Carl (Lois) Fritchman, of Milltown, Wis., and Paul (Jo) Fritchman, of Farmington, Minn.; a sister, Mary Lu Estlick, of Clarkedale, Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at McKinley United Methodist Church, with Rev. Dr. Donald D. Budd officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday after 1 p.m.
Earl was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will be sadly missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Valley or McKinley United Methodist Church.
