Robertson, George M.

George Maurice Robertson Jr. died March 13, 2003, Mercer Island, Washington, while convalescing from an illness. George was born April 2, 1920, in Cutbank, Montana, to George M. Robertson Sr. and Iris V. Robertson.
George lived his life with purpose and exuberance. He was a determined protector of those less fortunate than he. He was a prolific writer with an impressive range which included serious essays on current events, inspiring poetry, funny short stories and the occasional murder mystery. Most importantly, George was a devoted son, husband, father and friend.
In 1937, George moved with his parents to Winona, Minnesota, where his father eventually became President of Norwest Bank (currently Wells Fargo). After graduating from Winona Senior High School, George went on to attend Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota.
In June of 1942, George enlisted in the U.S. Army. Soon after enlisting he met and married the love of his life, Gloria Frazier, on July 13, 1943.
Eventually George headed overseas, billing himself as the oldest second lieutenant in Patton's Third Army. On May 3, 1945, George was presented with the Silver Star from the Sixth Armored Division for serving gallantly as a forward observer. While under heavy fire he temporarily stopped the enemy, and then returned to his radio and successfully directed artillery fire causing the enemy to retreat. His service ended in February of 1946, when George was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain, Artillery, USAR. Other decorations and citations include the American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon with 4 bronze stars, and Victory Ribbon. During the Korean War he spent two years at Fort Bliss, Texas.
After WWII, he returned to the U.S. to attend law school at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. George practiced law in Winona, Minnesota, for 38 years. For 23 of those years, he represented the City of Winona as general counsel and prosecuting attorney. He served as the Master of the Mason's Lodge #18 and as a President of the Woodlawn Cemetery Association. George was also a member of the American Legion and the Exchange Club.
George moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1988 to be with his two daughters, Jane and Jo Anne, and in anticipation of the birth of his beloved grandson Alex. Here he finished his book "First My People" about the maturing of a young Indian boy and dedicated it to his grandson.
What is most impressive about this man is how varied his interests were. George was a writer a good one. He was using a computer in 1986 long before most. He loved to travel climbing in his car everyday for at least a three or four hour drive to explore some new part of Washington. He championed the underdog staying involved in the Salvation Army's transitional housing for abused women and their children and often helping those women long after they had left. He was an intellectual reading, researching and debating current events with the best of them. And he was tough, boy was he tough.
Family came first for George. He was always at the ready to help, offer comfort, give advice or tell a bad joke. George is and was much loved. He will be greatly missed.
George was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Gloria Robertson. George is survived by his daughters Jo Anne Hacker and Jane Pekasky of Kirkland and Kenmore, Washington, respectively, and his grandson Alex Pekasky, as well as sons-in-law Robert Hacker and David Pekasky.
A special thanks from the family to Patricia Burnett and Joanne Ditchman of Bellevue, Washington. Both women were so caring in the final years of George's life.
Memorials may be directed to The Salvation Army Hickman House, c/o Major Clitheroe, 1101 Pike Street, Seattle, Washington 98101. A small graveside service at Woodlawn Cemetery will be held at a future date.
