Heise, Dr. Philip von Rohr

Dr. Philip von Rohr Heise passed away on Friday, April 4, 2003, at St. Michael's Lutheran Home in Fountain City, Wis.
Philip was born in Winona on July 14, 1912, to Dr. William F.C. Heise and Adele von Rohr Heise. Philip graduated from Winona Senior High School and later from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1942. He then joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps, being discharged in 1946, with the rank of Major. Returning to Winona, he and his father and four medical brothers founded the Heise Clinic, where they practiced together for the next forty-five years.
Dr. Phil married Patricia L. Weishorn on March 1, 1951, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church which his grandfather, Pastor Philip von Rohr, had founded. Dr. Heise was a lifelong member of the church, being an usher on many Sunday mornings.
Dr. Phil served as President of the Winona School Board from 1948-1959, when he moved out of the district to Pleasant Valley. He was a longtime member of the Winona Country Club, Little Theater, Winona Saddle and Bridle Club, LaCrosse Hunt Club, Winona County Medical Society and the Humane Society.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Patricia; daughters, Heidi Heise Caver, of Tulsa, Okla., Dr. Robin G. Heise, of Memphis, Tenn., Gretchen (Edward P.) Reid, of Tulsa, Lucretia (John M.) Hobbs, of Tulare, Calif., and Kimberly L. Heise, of Winona; a son, Philip G. (Sandra Cleary) Heise, of LaCrosse, Wis.; and grandchildren, Maxwell Hobbs, Sabrina Patricia Heise, Katherine Cleary, and Russell Philip Heise.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Herbert, William, Paul and Carl, and sisters, Adele Heise, Ruth Campbell and Dorothy Curtis.
Private funeral services will be held at a later date with private interment at Woodlawn Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Community Memorial Hospital or to the Humane Society.
Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Bening, Leona

Leona Bening, 90, of St. Anne Extended Healthcare, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona. Leona was born in Wibaux County, Montana, on September 23, 1912, the daughter of Robert and Johanna (Wicka) Cierzan.
She married Lionel C. Bening Sr. on Nov. 28, 1931, in Winona, he preceded her in death July 26, 1981. Leona worked at Winona Knitting Mills as a sewer, retiring in 1979.
Leona was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, its Rosary Society, Altar Society and its Quilters Guild. She is also a member of the Polish Heritage Society and was an active volunteer at its museum.
She is survived by her sons, Lionel C. (Donna) Bening, Plano, Texas, and Robert F. Bening, Lino Lakes, Minn.; daughters, Elizabeth (Arthur) Fant, Oak Harbor, Wash., Phyllis (Theodore) Brahm, Brookfield, Wis., and Dorothy (James) Abts, Cottage Grove, Minn.; thirteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lionel; three sisters and six brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 11, 2003, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Thursday, April 10, from 6-8 p.m., where members of St. Mary's Rosary Society will lead a rosary at 7:30 p.m. that evening. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona, Minn.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the Polish Heritage Society or to St. Anne Extended Healthcare.

Nyseth, Thomas O.

Thomas O. Nyseth, age 52, of Winona, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at his home.
Thomas Owen was born on December 5, 1950, in Winona to Donald O. and Mary Elizabeth (Heald) Nyseth. He attended Winona Senior High and graduated from Winona State University. On December 4, 1971, he married Rebecca A. Fabian, in Winona.
Tom served in the United States Army and completed two tours in Vietnam. After his military service, Tom became a police officer, working in St. Cloud from 1974 to 1978 and then in Winona from 1978 to December 30, 2000, retiring after 27 years. Following retirement, he was a substitute teacher at Winona Senior High and did security work.
He was a member of Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Knights of Columbus, Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, and Westfield Golf Course.
Tom was an avid runner, having completed six marathons, he enjoyed deer hunting with his son, Adam, and with all good weather permitting spent time fishing or playing golf. Tom's high hopes for his children and his family were in his every thought and deed.
Tom is survived by his wife, Rebecca, son, Adam Nyseth, Eagan, Minn.; daughter, Heather Nyseth (special friend, Mark Walseth) Edina, Minn.; brother, Gregory (Jody) Nyseth, Winona; and twin sisters, Jean (Jerry) Gallas, Winona, and Joan (John) Kierlin, Winona; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew John M. Kierlin Jr.
Mass of Christian Burial was Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at 10:30 a.m. at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, with Rev. John M. Sauer, officiating. Entombment with military rites was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.
Casket bearers will be Tim Schroering, Glen Erdmann, Gary Nyseth, Perry Nyseth, David Nyseth and Larry Sands.
Honorary casket bearers will be Mischelle Kierlin, Angela Evans, Julie Johnson, John Evans, Craig Johnson, George Christensen, Robert Czaplewski, Tom Gunn, Rick Snyder, Steve Baumgart, Ronald Fabian, and Mark Walseth.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements were completed by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.

Wenzel, Elaine S.

Elaine S. Wenzel, 82, Winona, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.
Elaine was born May 20, 1920, in Rollingstone, Minn., the daughter of Lawrence and Hattie (Weis) Hengel. She was united in marriage with Walter J. Wenzel on May 10, 1947, in Winona.
She was employed as a press operator for Behrens Manufacturing Company.
Elaine was a member of St. John Nepomucene Church and its Rosary Society.
Elaine is survived by her husband, Walter; two sons, Gary (Sandy) Wenzel, of Winona, and Thomas (Linda) Wenzel, of Winona; one daughter, Ann Wenzel, and special friend, Barb Schweiss, of Winona; three grandchildren, Kerri, Andrew, and Angela; one brother, Eugene Hengel, of Rollingstone, Minn.; as well as many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Elaine, her parents, and one brother, Earl.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 10, at St. John Nepomucene Church, with preliminary services at 10:30 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel R. Dernek will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday, April 9, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home, where a Christian Wake Service will be held at 5 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Tom Wenzel, Gary Wenzel, Andrew Wenzel, Francis Hengel, George Wenzel, and Dan Wenzel.

Firth, Robert Bruce Sr.

Robert Bruce Firth Sr., 83, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Bates Medical Center, Bentonville, Ark.
He was born October 25, 1919, in Winona, the son of John Henry and Myrtle Cross Firth.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and was a graduate of St. Mary's College in Winona. He and his wife, Garnet, moved to Bella Vista, Ark., in 1970. Bob enjoyed golf, bridge and travel.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Winifred LeBeau, and his second wife, Garnet Haze.
Survivors include one son, Robert Firth Jr., of Hot Sulpher Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Barbara Gardner-Anderson, of Tulsa, Okla., Linda Kilgore, of Minneapolis, Minn., and Deborah Rowen, of Denver, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 18, at the First United Methodist Church Chapel, 20 Boyce Drive, Bella Vista, Ark. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Bella Vista.

Brooks, Audrey Mae

Audrey Mae Brooks, 72, of 617 West Seventh St., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held Friday, April 11, at 2 p.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held on Friday after 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral arrangements are being completed by Martin-Myhre Funeral Home.

Rand, Frances L.

Frances Louise Rand, age 88, formerly of 732 West Fourth Street, Winona, died Friday, April 4, 2003 in Oak Park, Ill.
Frances was born July 10, 1914, on a farm near Stewartville, Minn., to Walter and Loretta (Kelly) Schultz. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1931 and Winona State University in 1937 with a degree in Elementary Education. On August 14, 1937, she married Kenneth Thomas Rand and he preceded her in death in 1972.
Frances was a member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, Winona where she served as church organist for many years; she also played the organ for Homer United Methodist Church. She worked as office manager for Central United Methodist Church, Winona for 41 years.
She is survived by her son, James (Debbie) Rand, Oak Park, Ill.; her daughter, Margery (Robert) Buckner, Brandon, Miss.; two brothers, Bill (Arva) Sackett, Rochester, Minn., and Lester (Barbara) Sackett, Ocean Side, Cal.; four sisters, Helen Welch, Rochester, Minn., Marion Kramer, Farmington, Minn., Irene Dalcher, Stamford, Conn., and Marjorie (Vince) Mongeau, Spring Valley, Minn.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, Gordon Sackett.
Memorial services will be Monday, April 28, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel United Methodist Church, 457 S. Baker Street, Winona, with Rev. Chris Robinson, officiating.
Interment took place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Memorials may be directed to Immanuel United Methodist Church Music Fund.
Funeral arrangements were completed by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.

Speck, Modesta A.

Modesta A. Speck, 84, of 751 East Tenth St., died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at her home.
She was born December 3, 1918, in Winona, the sixth of eight children born to Francis and Mary (Kleinschmidt) Kaldunski. On October 1, 1947, she married William J. Speck at St. Casimir's Church in Winona. He died December 28, 1992.
Modesta was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, St. Anne's Guild, Harvest House, and the Polish Historical Society. She was a devoted volunteer at the St. Vincent de Paul Store and St. Stanislaus School lunch program.
She is survived by three sons, William Jr. (Susan) Speck, of Faribault, Minn., John (Patt) Speck, of Maple Grove, Minn., and Thomas Speck, of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Elizabeth (John) Morin, of St. Paul, Minn., and Mary Ann (Allen) Jaedike, of Crystal, Minn.; and nine grandchildren, Allen Jaedike, Brian Jaedike, Colin Jaedike, Rebecca Speck, Mary Jo Speck, Kathryn Morin, Ellen Morin, Matthew Morin, and Amber Olson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a daughter, Kathryn, two brothers, and five sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Friday, March 28, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Francis Speck, James Neeck, Matthew Morin, Allen Jaedike, Brian Jaedike, and Colin Jaedike.
