Ortiz, Mary Hruska

Mary Hruska Ortiz, a former Lewiston, Minn., resident, died November 20, 2002, at her home in Las Vegas, Nev.
She was born May 1, 1928, in Iowa City, Iowa, and moved to Lewiston in early childhood with her family. They operated the Hruska Bar and Restaurant at Main and Fremont Streets (Hruska's Corner) for many years. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1946, and entered the nursing field in Rochester, Minn. She moved to Nevada in 1962.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Ortiz; four children, Jerry Moore, Barbara Hodgsen, Karie (Brian) Newton, and Elise (Rod) Johnson; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Hruska, of Rochester; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hruska, of Rochester.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Henrietta Hruska, and three brothers, Victor and Francis Bohr, and James Hruska.
Her funeral was November 24, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Las Vegas.

Jacques, Henrietta M.

Henrietta M. Jacques, 77, Winona, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 29, at Abbott Funeral Home in Wabasha, Minn., with Rev. Donald Lovas officiating. Burial was in St. Felix Cemetery in Wabasha.

Hughes, Charles Roger

Charles Roger Hughes, Ocala, Fla., died of cancer on Wednesday, March 26, 2003, after a long illness.
He was born August 21, 1922, to Joseph and Rose (White) Hughes. He attended Winona Senior High School. He married Jessie (Susie) Carter in February 1949.
He was retired from over-the-road truck driving.
He was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a ham radio operator.
Survivors include his wife, Jessie Susie (Carter) Hughes; a daughter, Kathy (Hughes) Olson; two grandchildren, Eric and Aaron Olson; a brother, Raymond (Laura) Hughes, of Oak Creek, Wis.; two sisters, Esther Bloesma, of Moline, Ill., and Yvonne (Clifford) Bergerson, of Galesville, Wis.; two sisters-in-law, Anna Hughes, of Winona, and Evelyn Hughes, of St. Charles, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Roger Charles Hughes, his first wife (mother of Roger, Gloria (Hicks) Hughes), brothers, Earl James Hughes, Gordon Hughes, and Richard Hughes, and sisters, Mabel (Hughes) Wiczek and Rose (Hughes) Carpenter.
Forest Lawn Funeral Homer in Ocala was in charge of arrangements.

Eskelson, Lawrence E.

Lawrence Edward Eskelson, 87, of 5058 West Seventh St., Goodview, and formerly of 528 West Sarnia, Winona, died Thursday, March 27, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
Lawrence was born in Rushford, Minn. on July 3, 1915, the son of Lewis and Clara (Hoiseth) Eskelson.
He married June C. Olstad at the Rushford Lutheran Church Parsonage on October 17, 1936.
Lawrence worked at Archer-Daniels-Midland for 27 years. When they closed shop, he worked in the maintenance department at the Winona County Courthouse until retiring.
Lawrence is a long time member of Central Lutheran Church, Winona.
He is survived by his wife, June; son, Gerald (Jan) Eskelson, Pepin, Wis.; daughters, Lois Graif, Rochester, Minn. and Carla (Terry) McGee, Lakeland, Florida. Five grandchildren, Stacey (Kurt) Ingli, Plum City, Wis., Sarah (Mark) Van Uden, Blaine, Minn., David Eskelson, Minneapolis, Minn., Meghan and Molly McGee of Lakeland, Florida; three great-grandchildren; sister, Milly (Pierce) Wittenberg, Winona and a brother-in-law, E. H. Hagan, Salina, Kan.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ernest, Clarence, Vernon and Norman; sisters, Frances Hagan, Bernice Bakken and Theoline Buchholz.
Funeral services for Lawrence will be on Monday, March 31, at 11:00 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church, Rev. Jeff Franko officiating. Friends may call on Sunday, March 30, from 3-5 p.m. at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home then on Monday from 10-11a.m. at the church. Interment is at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona, Minn.
Memorial gifts may be directed to the Central Lutheran Church Building Fund or the Donor's Choice.

Siegle, Mary A.

Mary A. Siegle died March 24, 2003 at Lake Winona Manor, where she was lovingly cared for.
Mary was born January 8, 1917, in Chicago, Illinois, to Alice and Henry MacMullen. Her three brothers, Robert, Michael, Thomas, and one sister, Helen, preceded her in death.
She married George Albert Siegle on December 27, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois. He was her best friend until March 14, 1996, when George died in Winona, Minn.
Mary is survived by two children, Karen (Robert) Jordan, and Jeanine (Eric) Sorensen; six grandchildren, Richard Krol, Lisa Fisher, Jennifer Weiser, Anton Sorensen, Liam Sorensen, and Ryan Sorensen; one great-grandchild, Adam Fisher; and, Humaira Akhter and Tine Larsen who loved and cared for her; special, long-time friends, Victor Herbert, June Scott, Mary and Ben Berickman, and cousin Mary Cantwell.
We will miss Minnie's Irish wit, wisdom, and sense of humor. She was a free spirit born ahead of her time, generous to those she met along the way. Minnie saw the hope and goodness in everyone. We will always remember that twinkle in her eyes and the smile on her face.
Count your age by friends,
Not years.
Count your life by smiles,
Not tears.
A memorial service is being arranged for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to establish a nursing scholarship in her name.

Stow, Donald H.

Donald H. Stow, 73 E. King St., died Thursday, May 2, 2002, at Sauer Memorial Home.
Donald was born July 29, 1937, in Winona to Hale and Emgert (Stephan) Stow.
He married Diane M. Galewski on June 12, 1971 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona.
He attended Winona State Teachers College and graduated from Mankato State College, Mankato, Minn., with a bachelor of science degree in music education. He completed graduate work at Mankato State and held a graduate assistantship in the Music Department there.
Donald was a former music teacher in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He was also formerly employed at Yellow Cab of Winona, Winona industries and retired from Cytec-Fiberite, Winona.
He was a member of the Auto License Plate Collectors Association and a former member of the Winona Symphony and the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart choir.
Donald is survived by his wife, a son, Greg (Amie Harris) of Winona, a daughter, Emily, of Burnsville, Minn., and a grandson, Evan of Burnsville; two brothers, John (Cecile) of Sparta, Wis., and Raymond (Joyce) of Marion, Iowa; and a half-sister, Margaret Woods, of Oxford Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother, Robert Stow.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Monday, May 6, 2002, at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona, with the Rev. Shawn Haremza, officiating. Burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery.
Pallbearers were his nephews: Allen Stow, Bryan Stow, Brad Lundstrom, Steve Brandt, Doug SaveHinrichs and Joe Galewski.
Memorials can be made to Winona Area Hospice Association or the American Cancer Society.

Johnson, Anne D.

Anne D. Johnson, 67, died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at her home in Rollingstone, Minn.
Anne was born October 5, 1934 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Donald and Grace (Sheneberger) Winters.
Anne was a secretary for the First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids and then moved to Minneapolis in 1960 where she was the secretary at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. She also worked at the Augsburg Publishing House. While she was working for Pure Oil as an office secretary she met Lynn Johnson and they were married November 27, 1965. They moved to Rollingstone in 1969 when Lynn was transferred. In Winona, Anne worked at the J.C. Penney Co. until it closed and then worked at the Winona License Center from which she retired in October 2001 after 14 years of service.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Winona.
Survivors include her son, Jeffrey L. Johnson of Belle Plaine, Minn.; her mother, Grace Winters; aunt and uncle, Phyllis and William Rice of Charlotte, NC; and cousins, Barbara Wilbur and her family of Columbus, MS., and Mary Noble and her family of Charlotte, NC.
Anne's husband, Lynn, and father, Donald preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 9 at 7 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church with Rev. Mark Dumke officiating. Burial of Anne's cremated body will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Rollingstone. Friends may call from 5 p.m. until the time of service at the church on Thursday.
The family suggests that memorials be directed to the Winona Hospice or Faith Lutheran Church.
Hoff Funeral Homes - Burke Winona Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Oehlert, Duewaine Walter

Duewaine Walter Oehlert, 67, formerly of Minnesota City, Minn., died Saturday, May 4, 2002 at Lake Winona Manor.
He was born in Columbia County, Wis. to Walter and Bertha (Yohn) Oehlert. He attended Rio High School and graduated in 1954. He married Barbara Boehm in 1955 in Portage, Wis. She died in 1979. He married Sandra Zenk-Alseth in 1982. She died February 21, 2002.
He worked at Brad Ragan in Madison, Wis. and later transferred to the Winona plant in 1971.
Survivors include his daughters, Rona (Randy) Purdy, Renee (Jim) Infield and Roxanne Marchetti; his mother, Bertha Oehlert; stepchildren, Tammy Alseth, Michelle Alseth, Robert (Shelly) Alseth and Jeff (Cindy) Alseth; fifteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Arnold and Eugene; and sisters, Jenny (Len) Diels, Phyllis Withum, Barbara (Melvin) Udell, Beverly (Mae) McDonald and Kay Oehlert.
He was preceded in death by his father, wives, brother-in-law, Byron Withum and a sister-in-law, Mae Oehlert.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Dost officiating. Burial will be in Bush Cemetery, Ridgeway, Minn. Friends may call Wednesday from noon until time of service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Alseth, Bob Alseth, Arnold Oehlert, Eugene Oehlert, Leonard Diels and Jerry Zenk.
Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.
A Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Service.
