Hess, Walter E.

Walter E. Hess, 90, Nelson, Wis., died Tuesday, October 8, 2002 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Wabasha, Minn.
He was born January 9, 1912 in Nelson, to Edwin and Permilla (Lockard) Hess.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Nelson area, and a very active member of the Church of Christ in Nelson.
Survivors include three sisters, Vera Ellingson and Dorothy Dummer, both of Nelson, and Reathal Schroeder of Alma, Wis.; one brother, Albert Hess of Nelson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services were Friday, October 11, at the Stohr-Hagen-Wozney Funeral Home in Alma, Wis., with Dennis Buri officiating. Burial was in the Nelson Cemetery.
Pallbearers were George Weaver, Cody Elliott, John Hess, Rick Lemke, Daniel Hess and Roger Myren.
Stohr-Hagen-Wozney Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Murray, Augusta Marie "Gussie"

Augusta Marie "Gussie" Murray, 99, formerly of 259 West Mill St., died Thursday, October 10, 2002 at St. Anne Extended Healthcare, where she had been a resident for 12 years.
She was born in Nodine, Minn., on September 30, 1903, to Augusta and Theodore Pohlman. She married Clifford F. Murray on November 26, 1930. He preceded her in death on February 26, 1969.
Augusta is survived by her three children: Samuel R. (Mary Jo) Murray of Winona, Doreene Carter of Minneapolis, and Karen Hanson of Eau Claire, Wis.; a son-in-law, James Hanson of Eau Claire; four grandchildren, Samantha Murray of Portland, Ore., Jedd Hanson (Amy) of Minneapolis, Jennifer Hanson-Bremer (Greg) of Eau Claire, and Cheri Davis (Ray) of Minneapolis; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Megan, Brianna and Dee Dee; two great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters, Anna, Caroline, Margaret and Techla, two brothers, Theodore and Edward, and a son-in-law, Richard Carter.
Augusta was a member of the Catholic Daughters, Minnesota City Boat Club, Winona Flower and Garden Club, the Larkin Club, Isaak Walton League, a ladies bunco group, and she was a Red Cross volunteer.
Augusta loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a beloved babysitter to many children and has fond memories of all of them.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, October 12, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Casketbearers were her grandchildren.
Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Brom, Cyril J.

Cyril J. Brom, 92, of Trempealeau, Wis., died Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at Onalaska Care Center in Onalaska, Wis.
Cy was born May 25, 1910 to John and Francis (Brezinski) Brom in Pine Creek, Wis. He attended area schools. On August 10, 1942 Cy enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served until November 26, 1945.
He was a member of Towner-Littlebear-Arnold VFW Post 1915 in Trempealeau, and Bautch-Kokott-Johnson VFW Post 10671 in Arcadia, Wis.
On September 30, 1967, Cy married Margaret Kiedrowski in Galesville, Wis.
Cy worked as a carpenter until the early 1970s. He worked for the Town of Trempealeau for 5 years.
He is survived by his wife; four stepsons, Dick (Mary) Kiedrowski of Ettrick, Wis., Tony Kiedrowski and Steve Kiedrowski, both of Trempealeau, and Mike (Linda) Kiedrowski of Menasha, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Ruth Ann (Tom) Snyder of Tempe, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; a sister, Monica Sobota of Arcadia; and a brother, Connie (Jen) Brom of Winona.
Cy was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers, and two sisters.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, October 14, at St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church in Trempealeau, with Father Thomas McInnis officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors in Holy Cross Cemetery in Trempealeau.
Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. at Zwickey Funeral Homes Galesville Chapel on Sunday, October 13.

Kurth, Ethel R.

Ethel R. (Olson) Kurth, 91, of 1781 Edgewood Road, Winona, died Monday, October 7, 2002 at her home. Ethel was born in Houston, Minn. on March 2, 1911, the daughter of John S. and Rose A. (Greene) Olson.
She attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. Ethel began her teaching career in Peterson, Minn. in the junior high grades. She then worked under Dr. Walker at the Winona Clinic as a doctors assistant. Following that she taught in rural country schools until returning to college to obtain her masters degree. She became the supervisor of elementary music and vocal for Richfield, Minn. schools until retiring.
Following retirement she did substitute teaching in LaCrosse, Wisc. and Winona.
Ethel married Frank C. Kurth in Winona on Feb. 14, 1941. He died in August of 1964.
Ethel began playing the violin at the age of 12 and continued to do so for 70 years, last playing in late September. Not only did she play the violin, she enjoyed listening to and teaching music to others. She is a 1933 charter member of the Church of the Nazarene, and maintained an active role in the church including church missions throughout her life.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan (David) Reed, Minnesota City, Minn.; a grandson, Chad (Stephanie) Reed, Minneiska, Minn. and grandchildren, Ethan, Anna and Elisabeth Reed. She is also survived by several much loved nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, a brother, Harold Olson and a sister, Helen Schramm.
Funeral services for Ethel will be on Sat., Oct. 12, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at the Church of the Nazarene, Rev. Wesley Hart officiating. Interment will be in Silver Creek Cemetery, Houston, MN.
Memorial offerings may be directed to the Winona Area Hospice Services or to the Donor's Choice.

Davies, Clara W.

Clara W. Davies, age 93, died Thursday, October 10, 2002 at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.
Clara Wihelmina Weimer was born on October 12, 1908 in Winona to Henry and Clara (Saehler) Weimer. Clara was born, baptized and confirmed in the true Christian Faith of the Lutheran Church.
Clara graduated from Winona Senior High in 1928. On June 17, 1932, she married Evan "Ollie" Davies at St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church, Winona. Ollie died February 17, 1986.
She was a charter member of Goodview Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church and active in the church guild. She worked many years as a voulunteer at the Sauer Retirement Home and at Community Memorial Hospital both of Winona.
Clara is survived by a son, Evan (Judy) Davies, Phoenix, AZ; a daughter, Marcia (Arnold) Boese, Winona; six grandchildren: Nancy (Craig) Soucy and Roger Davies, Douglas (Cindy) Boese, The Rev. Jean Boese, Brian Boese and Jan (Charles) Anderson; nine great grandchildren; a brother Henry C. Weimer, Winona; a sister Corlyn Wolverton, Colorado Springs, CO; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two brothers, Edward and Carl Weimer; three sisters, Leonora Haedke, Erna Grablander, and Margaret Weimer, and one grandson, Victor Davies.
Funeral services will be Monday, October 14, 2002 at 11:00A.M. at Goodview Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church with Rev. Tony J. Hansen, officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will be at the church on Monday, one hour prior to the service.
Memorials, in lieu of flowers, are requested to be directed to the Goodview Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church.
Casket bearers are her grandchildren, Cindy Boese, Rev. Jean Boese, Brian Boese and Douglas Boese, Jan and Charles Anderson.
Honorary bearers are Nancy Soucy and Roger Davies

McElmury, George J.

George J. McElmury, age 90, of Goodview, Minn., died Tuesday, October 22, 2002 at Lake Winona Manor, Winona.
George was born on January 2, 1912 in Winona to George and Margaret (English) McElmury. He was a life long resident of Winona, graduating from Winona High School in 1931. On March 13, 1933, he married Irene W. Nelson at McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona. They recently celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
George helped in the construction of the lock and dams on the Mississippi River. He worked for the Federal Bakery, Winona for 10 years. After 26 years of employment, he retired from U.S. Steel Agri-Chemical, Winona in 1975.
He was a member of McKinley United Methodist Church. George had a huge garden, which he enjoyed very much. He also was very mechanical and enjoyed fixing various items.
He is survived by his wife, Irene, Goodview; two sons, Ramon (Charlotte) McElmury, of Minnesota City, Minn. and George (Arlene) McElmury, of Portland, Ore.; six grandsons: Keith (Janet), Bruce, Shawn (Carmon), Leslie (Heidi), Russell and Mike (Kelly); six great grandchildren: Jessica, Travis, Nick, Josh, Ethan and Jake; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Howard and Ralph.
Funeral service were Friday, October 25, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, with Rev. Dr. Donald D. Budd, pastor of McKinley United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Casket bearers were grandsons and great grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Winona Area Hospice or McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona.

Albert Platteter, 98, died Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at St. Anne of Winona.

Albrecht, Eleanor M.

Eleanor M. Albrecht, 77, died Thursday, October 17, 2002 at Winona Community Memorial Hospital. Eleanor was born April 23, 1925 in Winona, MN. She married George Albrecht who has preceded her in death.
Eleanor is survived by one son and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband, one brother and 2 sisters.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Winona. There are no services planned at this time.
