Sell, Elmer

Elmer Sell, 82, of Stuart, Fla., died Monday, October 21, 2002 at his home in St. Lucie Falls.
He was born June 14, 1920 in Fall Creek, Wis. He lived in Winona 44 years and moved to Stuart, Fla. in 1996.
He was a World War II veteran and a POW.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Lois; two sons, Larry (Kathy) Sell of Oak Ridge, NC and David (Doreen) Sell of Belvidere, Ill.; two daughters, Nancy (Don McNally) of Stuart, Fla. and Cheryl (Michael Gibson) of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
One son preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held Thursday, October 24, at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be directed to the Hospice of Martin, c/o Lois Sell, 2793 SW Marquis Terrace, Stuart, FL 34997.

Lange, Richard L. "Hurk"

Richard L. "Hurk" Lange, 51, died Monday, October 21, 2002 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wis., after suffering a heart attack.
Rick was born October 30, 1950 in LaCrosse, to Leslie and Bernice (Bauer) Lange. On August 30, 1969 he married Linda Holte in Hokah, Minn.
Rick was a lifelong resident of the Houston area where he had currently been a field supervisor for Interstate Roofing Co. He had also worked for Trane Company in LaCrosse and for Peter Nelson and Sons Construction.
Rick was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Houston, Minn. He was also a member of the AFL-CIO Laborers 140 and the Hokah Lions Club. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He will be lovingly remembered for being a great family man, having a happy and generous personality, and was a friend to everyone.
Rick is survived by his wife, Linda; daughter, Tari Lange of Houston, Minn.; grandson, Randi Lange; mother, Bernice Lange of Dakota, Minn.; siblings, Jim (Lois) Lange of Houston, Rose Lange of Dakota, Ray Lange of Houston, Judy (Fred) Mueller of LaCrescent, Minn., Donna (Stan) Johnson of LaCrescent, Joan (Keith) Kor of Dakota, Kathy (Henry) Meuwissen of Faribault, Minn., Dan (Kathy) Lange of Houston, Deb (Shane) Trynowski of Dakota, and Mike (Patti) Lange of Houston; and numerous godchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leslie, a son, Ronnie, and a sister, Sharon Lange-Faran.
A Funeral Mass was offered Thursday, October 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Houston with Rev. William Kulas officiating. Burial was in the South Ridge United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jim Lange, Ray Lange, Dan Lange, Mike Lange, Mike Schaffer and Todd Dawson.
Honorary pallbearers were Charlie Kasten, Archie Jorgenson, Troy Lange, Zack Lange and "all of the deer hunters."
Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.

Backus, Grace Dahm

Born in Lewiston, Minn., on December 5, 1907 to Emil E. and Helen (Litscher) Gremelsbach, Grace Evelyn lived in the area and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1924. She received her B.S. in Chemistry from the College of Saint Teresa, Winona, in 1928. Grace married J. Milton Dahm in 1931. They lived in Winona where Mr. Dahm operated a jewelry store and watch repair business. To their union were born five children. Widowed in 1973, she married LeRoy Backus in April 1976. He died in 1979.
Grace was preceded in death by two sons, Francis Blaze (stillborn) and Joseph Mercier Dahm. She was predeceased by two brothers, Sydney J. and Eldon E. Gremelsbach and a sister, Donna M. (Richard) Reiland. Three children survive: Eleanor C. (Ezio) Sansoni of Merced, Cal., Eugene E. (Anne) Dahm of Norfolk, VA., and Mary L. (Patrick) O'Hare, Marietta, GA. Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren also survive.
Through the years, Grace was actively involved in many community issues. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and of the Winona Council of Catholic Women. Grace also belonged to the Ruskin Study Club, the Winona Chamber of Commerce, Friends of the Library, the Minnesota Ornithologists Union and the Hiawatha Valley Audubon Society. She and Mr. Dahm shared the hobby of birding, both being charter members of the Winona Bird Club.
Always an active "birder, " she convinced the Winona Convention and Visitor's Bureau to print a color brochure on area birds to help draw tourists to the region, and was a driving force behind the building of the Prairie Island Nature Trail. Since 1985 she regularly wrote articles for the Winona Post, which were compiled into book form as "Wings Over Winona."
In 1992 she was chosen to receive the Winona County Historical Society's Heritage Award. The following year she was distinguished by her alma mater, the College of Saint Teresa, with its annual Citation Award. A high point in her life came in 1994, when the Winona Chamber of Commerce had the honor of presenting her with the nationally significant Athena Award, for her many years of service and dedication to the community.
For five years, Grace resided at Villa Del Rey in Merced, Cal., but returned to Winona in 1999 to live at Callista Court. Her last days were spent in the care of many dedicated and sensitive professionals at St. Anne Hospice in Winona.
Private family entombment was held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Winona. A memorial Mass for Grace will be held on Tuesday, October 29, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 10:30 a.m., with Rev. Msgr. Roy Literski officiating. Friends may call at the Cathedral that day from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.

Reps, Paul "Junior"

Paul "Junior" Reps, Jr., 77, of Fremont died Saturday evening from injuries sustained in a single vehicle auto accident in Saratoga Township of Winona County.
Paul was born February 27, 1925 in Minnesota City to Paul Reps Sr. and Barbara (Denzer) Reps. He attended Enterprise School. On August 28, 1948 Paul and Jeanette Randall were married in Winona. The couple farmed in the Fremont area their entire married life. Jeanette died March 31, 2001. Paul will always be remembered for his love of farming, his zest for life and his laugh.
He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ/ Evangelical Lutheran Church in America at Lewiston, where he served on various committees. He also served on the Fremont Creamery Board.
Survivors include two sons, Randy (Lori) of Lewiston and Dean (Kristi) of Utica, two daughters, Leann (Ordell) Jacobson of Rushford and Lonna (Dave) Benson of Lewiston, 17 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, four brothers, Robert (Betty) of Lewiston; Elmer (Lillian) and Doug both of St. Charles; Richard (Beverly) of Utica, a sister Fern (Leon) Kieffer of St. Charles, two sister-in-laws, Julia Reps of Greeley, CO and Marcie Reps of Lewiston. In addition to his wife Jeanette, an infant son, an infant grandson, and two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral Services will be 1:30 PM Wednesday at St. Paul's UCC/ ELCA in Lewiston with the Rev. Roy Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in the Lewiston Public Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 - 8 PM Tuesday at Hoff
Funeral Home's - Lewiston Chapel. They may also call one hour before services Wednesday at the church.
In Lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given in memory of Paul to St. Paul's Church building fund.
Hoff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Jackowski, Lila Lee

Lila Lee Jackowski, 78, of Houston, Minn. died Saturday, November 2, 2002, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. Lila was born on February 27, 1924, at Oak Ridge, Minn. to Julian and Stella (Saunders) Lee. She was baptized and confirmed at Oak Ridge Lutheran Church. She attended Oak Ridge Grade School and graduated from Rushford High School in 1941. Lila worked at Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse, Wis. for several years. She then moved to Milwaukee, Wis. where she worked at Harnisifiger Company doing office work. Lila married Daniel Jackowski in 1952. Daniel died in 1995. In October of 1996, Lila moved to Houston, Minn. to live near her family. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston. She is survived by one brother, Jerome (Bonnie) Lee of LaCrosse, Wis.; one sister, Anita (Lyle) Peterson of Houston, Minn.; one sister-in-law Evelyn Konek of Milwaukee, Wis.; nieces and nephews: Douglas, Wendy, Travis Peterson, David Lee, Gloria Koenemann, and Marsha Burroughs; great-nieces and nephews, many cousins and friends.
The funeral service was Tuesday at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Houston Chapel with the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiating. Burial was Wednesday at the Arlington Park Cemetery in Greenfield, Wis.

Rukavina, Clara M.
Clara Margaret Rukavina, 88, of St. Anne Extended Healthcare, died Sunday, November 17, 2002, at St. Anne's.
Private family services were held on Tuesday, November 19, in the Chapel of St. Anne Hospice, with Msgr. Roy Literski officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Ryan, Marie H.
Marie H. Ryan, 97, of Lake Winona Manor and formerly of 1022 West Wabasha St., died Wednesday, November 20, 2002, at Lake Winona Manor.
Arrangements are pending.

Filla, Marcel P.
Marcel P. Filla, 71, of Eau Claire, Wis., died Thursday, November 21, 2002 at the Clairemont Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Eau Claire.
Arrangements are pending at Prock Funeral Home.

Ryan, Marie H.

Marie H. Ryan, 97, of Lake Winona Manor, and formerly of 1022 West Wabasha, Winona, died Wednesday, November 20th at Lake Winona Manor.
Marie was born in Winona on June 14, 1905, the daughter of John M. and Mary A. (Beil) Wise. She is a life long Winona resident. Marie worked at Behren's Manufacturing for many years as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1968.
She is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona, and its Rosary Guild, Winona Senior Center and the Winona Flower and Garden Club.
Surviving Marie is a sister, Helen Reisdorf, Oakdale, MN.; nine nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona. Friends may call at the Visitation Commons of St. Mary's Church on Sat., Nov 23, from 9:30 a.m. to time of services.
Memorial gifts may be given to St. Mary's Church.

Filla, Marcel
Marcel (Marc) P. Filla, 71, of Eau Claire, Wis., formerly of Independence, Wis., passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2002, at the Clairemont Nursing Home, after a lengthy, painful battle with cancer.
Marc was born October 28, 1931, the son of Peter T. and Mary (Motszko) Filla, in Independence, Wis. On June 27, 1960, he married Barbara Tuschner Filla in Arcadia, Wis. They resided in Eau Claire for 25 years.
After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he operated a tavern with his brother for several years. Most of his life's work was building concrete highways, including the interstate system, throughout the state of Wisconsin. His favorite pastimes were cooking and spending time outdoors, growing a vegetable garden, apple trees, and raspberries, and most of all, flowers and houseplants. Fishing, hunting and dancing also were favorite activities he enjoyed.
Marc is survived by his wife, Barbara; three sons, Michael (Krista Lund) of Hudson, Wis., Neal (Lisa Eginton) of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Quinn of Boulder, Colo.; three grandchildren, Kendra (Mike and Krista), Matthew, and Nicholas (Neal and Lisa); a brother, Edmund (Doris) of Arcadia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Franklin, one sister, Caroline, and a brother, Raymond C.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, November 25, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Eau Claire, with Father Eugene Klink officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites provided by the VFW Post #305. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, November 24, at Prock Funeral Home, 405 North Hastings Place (Hwy. 53), Eau Claire, Wis., where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
Prock Funeral Home is serving the family.

Rukavina, Clara

Clara Margaret Rukavina, 88, of St. Anne Extended Healthcare, died Sunday, November 17th, at St. Anne's. She was born in Meadowlands, Minnesota on June 19, 1914, to Max and Martha (Rohnert) Schleinitz.
On November 19, 1933, she married Daniel G. Rukavina at St. Mary's Church, Meadowlands. They moved to Winona on July 31, 1974. He preceded her in death on April 1, 2002.
Clara was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is a member of St. Mary's Church, Winona. A former member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Coleraine, MN., where she taught CCD from 1940 to 1968; she was also active in its Women's Circle.
Clara is a past president and member of the Coleraine American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her sons, Daniel (Patricia) Rukavina, Winona; Max (Charlene) Rukavina, Loudon, TN.; daughter-in-law, Betsy Rukavina, Sister Bay, WI. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Preceding Clara in death were her parents; husband-Daniel; a son-Tony; three brothers and one sister.
Private family services were held for Clara on Tuesday in the Chapel of St. Anne Hospice, Rev. Msgr. Roy Literski officiated. Interment followed at St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.
Casket bearers were Dave Arnold, Bud Baechler and grandsons, Dan J., Tony, John and Mike Rukavina.
Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Anne Foundation, Winona Area Hospice Services or the donor's choice.
