Ernst, Benjamin M.

Benjamin "Ben" Michael Ernst, age 16, of rural Fountain City, Wis., died on Sunday, February 2, 2003, at his home.
Ben was born on September 9, 1986, in Winona, Minn., to Tim and Amy (Gabrych) Ernst.
Ben was a loving son, brother and grandson. He was passionate about all sports, especially basketball, football, baseball and golf. Ben enjoyed his trips with FFA. He was an honor roll student, academic all conference and a sophmore at Cochrane-Fountain City High School. Ben also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his loving parents, Tim and Amy of rural Fountain City; sister, Jessica Ernst at home; paternal grandparents, Art and Doris (Pape) Ernst, Fountain City; maternal grandparents, Elmer and Maxine (Grochowski) Gabrych, Winona, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his great grandparents.
Ben will be sadly missed by all and was loved by many. Ben's life was too short but he lived it to its fullest and accomplished so much.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, February 5, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City, Wis., with Rev. John Parr, officiating. Burial will be at Bohri's Valley Cemetery, Fountain City, Wis.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 4, 2003, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City, and also at the church on Wednesday one hour prior to mass. The wake service will be Tuesday, at 7:00 PM at the church.
Casket bearers will be Matt Ziegler, Doug Ratz, Greg Kramer, John Baures, Adam Miemietz, Andrew Pardun, Mitch Platteter and Justin Julson.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that funds can be contributed to a memorial fund in his honor which has been established at First State Bank in Fountain City.
Funeral arrangements were completed by Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Fountain City, WI.

Haugen, William

William "Bill" Robert Haugen, 51, of Rushford, died Sunday, January 19, 2003, due to injuries from an automobile accident north of St. Charles, Minn. Bill was born on July 20, 1951, in Winona, Minn. to Robert and Annabelle (Rolbiecki) Haugen. Bill lived most of his life in Rushford and had also lived in California and Milwaukee. He was a 1971 graduate of Rushford High School. On May 23, 1981, Bill married Lori Troke at St. John's Catholic Church in Winona. He had been a member of the U.S. National Guard for six years. Bill worked at Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Winona for 27 years. He was a bartender at the American Legion Club in Rushford as well as running his own fly fishing business, Magic Ring Trout Flies Guide Service. Bill had fishing guide clients from all over the United States. His interests included golfing, hunting, bowling, watching his son Eric's sporting events, tinkering on the farm, cutting wood, and especially taking Eric and Bill's friend Jim Rand fly fishing to their favorite spots at Winnebago and South Fork. Bill was a member of the Rushford American Legion, and Past President of Trout Unlimited. Bill was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother. We will all miss him dearly. He is survived by his wife, Lori; mother, Annabelle Haugen of Rushford; Son, Eric, at home; daughter, Andrea at home and her boyfriend Chad Heuser of Caledonia; one brother, Ron (Annie) Haugen of Lewiston, Minn.; one sister, Ruth (Tom) Pederson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and his favorite dog Major. He was preceded in death by his father. The funeral service was on Monday, February 3, at Rushford Lutheran Church in Rushford with the Rev. David Watson and the Rev. William Kulas officiating. Burial will take place on a later date.

Heim, Bernard W.

Bernard William Heim, 87, of St. Charles, died Monday at Whitewater Healthcare Center in St. Charles.
Bernard was born January 4, 1916, in Elba Township of Winona County. He and Bernice H. Ferguson were married December 16, 1937. Bernice died February 16, 1973. On October 4, 1975, he and Jean L. Keanmaster were married. Jean died May 1, 1998.
Bernard farmed from 1940 to 1974 in Elba Township. In 1974 he moved to St. Charles and worked part-time for Schultz Implement and AA Fertilizer.
He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church and had served on the church council. He was a member of the St. Charles Moose Lodge and had served as Governor for two years. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, was an active community volunteer and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include four daughters, Sharon (Richard) Reynolds of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Diane (F.H. III) Bosworth of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lynda Heim of Eden Prairie and Shirley Heim Barnes (Thomas Barnes) also of Eden Prairie; two step-daughters, Linda (William) Borchert of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Susan Griffiths of Kentucky; four grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. In addition to his wives, Bernice and Jean, five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
There will be a funeral mass 10:00 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with the Rev. James Callahan officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in St. Charles. Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hoff Funeral Home's - St. Charles Chapel. A rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 8:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Lash, Norman "Pete"

Norman A. "Pete" Lash, 80, of Fountain City, Wis., went to be with his Creator and many loved ones on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003. He was born in Jackson County, Wis., on July 9, 1922, the son of Frank and Grace (Stark) Lash. He never married.
Norman farmed all his life. He loved being with his family, going for rides in the country, dining out, and going to garage sales was a big pastime for him.
He is a member of St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fountain City, Wis.
He is survived by a brother, Marvin (Tena) Lash, St. Paul, Minn., sisters, Lorene Adank, Fountain City, and Goldie Wrycza, Gilmanton, Wis., many nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law, Oscar Hansen, Waumandee, Wis. He was was loved by all who knew him.
Pete was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Elaine Finks, Alvera Hansen and Leola Neiffer, brothers-in-law, Lionel Adank, John Wrycza and Eldon Neiffer.
Your work on earth has been completed dear brother, you are now safely home in the arms of Jesus, where there is only joy and beauty in the house that Jesus built for you. We love you and miss you.
Norman "Pete" Lash has been cremated. There will be a memorial service for him on Friday, Feb. 7, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home in Fountain City, Wis.
Rev. Elroy V. Conradt, St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the spring at Fountain City Public Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Friday from 10-11:00 a.m.

Olson, Elsie Marie

Elsie Marie Olson, 92, of St. Michael Lutheran Home, Fountain City, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at the home. She is formerly of Springfield, Ill. Elsie was born in Staunton, Ill., on June 8, 1910, the daughter of Louis H. and Augusta (Sack) Sternamen.
She married Betha Harvey Williams in Springfield, Ill., on Sept. 28, 1929. He died in Spruce Pine, N.C., on Sept. 25, 1974. She then married Nolan R. Olson on Jan. 27, 1978, in Florida. He died Nov. 9, 1987, in Weyauwega, Wis.
Elsie is a member of St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church, Fountain City, Wis.
Elsie was known for her ability to sew, making both daughters' wedding gowns. She would draw her own patterns. She was skilled with her hands, making crafts, the tinier the better. Her amazing "House of Minatures, " a furnished dollhouse, was viewed and awed by many generations.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Roland) Welch, Bay City, Michigan, and Judy (Harry) Putz, Fountain City, Wis.; eleven grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren and sisters, Lillian Ostermeier, Springfield, Ill., Viola (Edward) Aldrich, Springfield, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services for Elsie will be on Thursday, February 6, 2003, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Ev. Lutheran Church, Rev. ElRoy V. Conradt officiating. Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to time of service at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be in the spring at Fountain City Public Cemetery.
Casket bearers are Richard, William, Thomas and Michael Welch, Timothy and Steven Putz.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Michael Lutheran Home Activity Fund or the Donor's Choice.

Warthesen, Dr. Joseph

Dr. Joseph J. Warthesen, age 54, of Roseville, passed away suddenly Friday, Jan. 31, 2003. Dr. Warthesen was a Professor and Dept. Head of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Minn. Since 1987, he has been the director of the Minn-SD Dairy Foods Research Center. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science and Industries in 1970 and Master of Science degree in Food Science in 1971 from the U of Minn. He received his Ph D. in Food Science in 1974 from Oregon State University.
Preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Wayne Wood. Survived by parents, Ralph and Ann Warthesen of Theilman, his loving wife, Donna (Wood), his children, Amy, Sarah, and Dan, his siblings, Eileen (John) Kronebusch, Marie (Tom) Tibor, John (Marge) Warthesen and Phyllis (Gene) Speltz and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Service Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, 11 a.m. with visitation one hour before at St. Odilia Catholic Church, 3495 N Victoria Ave, Shoreview, Minn. Memorials preferred.

Holland, Eunice Ione

Eunice Ione Holland, 98, of Winona, formerly of Grand Meadow, Minn., died Friday, January 24, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor.
Funeral services were Monday, January 27, at the United Church of Grand Meadow, with Rev. Greg Strunk officiating. Burial was in the Grand Meadow Cemetery.

Erdmann, Verna I.

Verna I. Erdmann, 83, Winona, died Friday, January 24, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were Tuesday, January 28, at St. Martin's Lutheran Church, with Rev. William Flesch officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Highum, Clarice L.

Clarice L. Highum, 81, Rushford, Minn., died Friday, January 24, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were Monday, January 27, at Rushford Lutheran Church, with Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial was in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.

Murphy, Jacie Joyce

Jacie Joyce Murphy, stillborn infant of Scott J. and Jana D. (Schossow) Murphy, was born Saturday, January 25, 2003, at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.
Jacie is survived by her parents, Scott and Jana Murphy of Winona; a brother, Jacob Murphy, at home; paternal grandparents, James and Joyce Murphy of Winona; maternal grandparents, Dale and Sharon Schossow of Winona; maternal great-grandmothers, Clarise Meyer of Rushford, Minn., and Doris Schossow of Winona; aunts, uncles and cousins.
A private funeral service was held at Immaculate Conception Church in Wilson, Minn., with Rev. Shawn T. Haremza officiating.
Jacie came and went in an instant, taking with her a lifetime of hopes and dreams we had for her. We will hold her in our hearts forever.

Stuber, Lucille E.

Lucille E. Stuber, 84, of Cochrane, Wis., died Sunday, January 26, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., with her family at her side.
Lucille was born October 24, 1918, in Revillo, S.D., to Albert and Jeanette (Mallas) Beutler. She spent most of her childhood years growing up in Fountain City, Wis. She graduated from Fountain City High School in 1936. On June 18, 1940, she married Clifford Stuber in Fountain City. He died April 21, 2000.
Lucille worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years, serving as a clerk at both Fountain City and Cochrane offices. While in Cochrane, she was also a rural carrier for many of those years until retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Rural Carrier Association.
She was very active with many organizations. She was secretary/treasurer of the AAL Branch 611 for many years. She organized many benefits and fund raisers for the area communities and residents. Lucille received a Special Community Award for community service. She enjoyed her service to the Fountain City Historical Society. She was also a member of the Fountain City American Legion Auxiliary Post #56, Cochrane VFW Auxiliary Post #10406, and Tops Club. Lucille enjoyed many years of traveling in her retirement.
She was a member of Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in Cochrane, where she served in the Ladies Aid and church choir.
Survivors include three daughters, Janet (Bill) Waldera of Whitehall, Wis., Diane Schultz of Alma, Wis., and Marilu (Steve) Hanson of Mukwonago, Wis.; eleven grandchildren: Todd, Melisa, Bethany, Derek, Eric, Tami, Kati, Kari, Jackie, Stephanie, and Brian; two great-grandsons, Ryan and Tyler; and a brother, Edward (Bibi) Beutler of Glendale, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a brother, Glenn Beutler.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 30, at Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in Cochrane, with Rev. Reed Degener officiating. Burial will be in the Buffalo City Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, at the Christ Ev. Lutheran Church in Cochrane, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. devotional service, and again from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Lucille's grandchildren: Todd, Melisa and Bethany Halvorson, Derek Waldera, Eric Schultz, Tami Gianotti, Kati Hanson, Kari Dascher, Jackie, Stephanie and Brian Hanson.
J.S. Wozney Funeral Chapel of Cochrane, is in charge of the arrangements.
