Abrams, Alson Allen Sr.
Alson Allen Abrams Sr., 87, of Winona, died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born August 15, 1915, in West Terre Haute, Ind., to Charles and Eliza Abrams. He graduated from Concannon High School in West Terre Haute. On June 15, 1937, he married Selma Isaac in Robinson, Ill. They had four children.
Al worked as a branch manager for Holland Furnace Co. for many years. He later founded Abrams Furnace Co. in 1958 in Winona, which he continued to run until his retirement in 1994.
He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and served on its church council. In earlier years, he was very active with the Boy Scouts Troop 6 as an assistant scout leader and Explorer Post 6 as post leader. He had many fond memories of canoe and camping trips he helped organize. He was formerly a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He was also a member of the Winona Masonic Lodge 18 AF and AM, Valley of Rochester Scottish Rite and the Ozmun Shrine.
He is survived by his wife, Selma, of Winona; two sons, Al Abrams Jr., of Witoka, Minn., and Don (D.D.) Abrams, of White Bear Lake, Minn.; two daughters, Lois (Ramon) Snyder, of Raleigh, N.C., and Patricia (Mike) Baures, of Fountain City, Wis.; twelve grandchildren: Jeff (Tina) Abrams, of rural Witoka, Lynne (David) Fournier, of South Milwaukee, Wis., Tim Abrams, of Witoka, Dylan and Derrick Abrams, of White Bear Lake, Linda Plummer, of Apex, N.C., Jim and Tom Snyder, of Raleigh, Kimberly Snyder, of Cary, N.C., Jenny Baures, of Lake City, Minn., Brian (JaNette) Baures, of Winona, and Matt Baures, of Fountain City; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Boyd and Taft, and four sisters, Vola, Delpha, China and Lela.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 27, at Central United Methodist Church, with Rev. Mary E. Hurmence officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Casketbearers were his grandsons.
Memorials may be directed to Boy Scout Troop 6.
Al will always be lovingly remembered as a hard working family man. He loved his garden and shared the bounty of his green thumb with many friends and neighbors. He will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched.
Calloused hands, so firm and strong,
Have labored much for years so long.
You fought the good fight,
Your toil is now through.
Rest now, Dad, we all love you!

Ashelin, David
David Ashelin, 66, died Sunday, May 25, 2003, at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.
David was born February 21, 1937, in Winona County, to Julius and Margaret (Thesing) Ashelin. David grew up in the Winona area and attended Winona Public Schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959-1961. Returning from service, David went to work for Badger Equipment where he was employed for over 40 years. He enjoyed going to concerts in the area, spending time outdoors and visiting family and friends.
David is survived by his brothers and sisters: Bernadine (Raymond) Kammerer, of Winona, Vincent (Lorraine) Ashelin, of Winona, Rosemary (Sylvester) Erpelding, of Winona, Thomas (Pauline) Ashelin, of Tucson, Ariz., Evelyn (James) Duellman, of Winona, and Romaine (Gloria) Ashelin, of Winona; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Raphael, Victor, Theodore, George and Wayne.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Thursday, May 29, at 10 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, with Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Winona.
Friends may call at Hoff Funeral Home's - Burke Winona Chapel on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Pallbearers will be David's nieces and nephews.
Hoff Funeral Home's - Burke Winona Chapel is assisting with the arrangements.

Huff, George Conrad
George Conrad Huff left this world on Sunday, April 27, 2003, at his home in Tanque Verde Valley, Ariz., to embark on a new and wondrous adventure.
George loved fishing, hunting and hiking, and appreciated all the beauty and pleasures the mountains hold. He also loved to fly and was a pilot.
George was born in Pickwick, Minn., on March 20, 1924, to a hard-working Norwegian farming family. He joined the CC Camps and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served his country honorably and was on the first ship to enter the Japanese harbor prior to the signing of the peace treaty. Among other duties on the ship, George was the ship's tailor. He continued tailoring after the Navy in his own dry cleaning business in Jamaica, N.Y.
George married Anne Metzler and they moved to Tucson, Ariz. in 1957. George became involved in the plumbing business and started his own company in 1963. George C. Huff Plumbing, Inc. continues to thrive as a family business. He and Jan LaFave were married in 1983, and built their home in the Tanque Verde Valley.
George is survived by his loving wife, Jan; their darling Yorkie, Baby; a son, Kenneth (Marie ) Huff; daughters, Karen (Glenn) Noland and Deborah Adamcik; stepson, Anthony (Vickie) LaFave; granddaughters, Kate, Shannon, Mallory, Rebecca, Andrea and Casey; great-granddaughter, Brianna; his first wife, Anne Metzler Huff of 26 years of marriage; his siblings still living in his beloved Minnesota, brothers, Victor (Ginny) and Carlton; sister, Lucille (Edward) Burkhalter; Jan's family, her mother, Betty (Edward) Trinque of AR; brothers, Vance Snyder of Tucson, Lowry (Pat) Snyder; sisters, Pamela Martin and Sharon Brown of Mich.; and many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceded in death by a brother, Irvine.
Services were held at the VFW on Sunday, May 4.

Patterson, Ruth E.
Ruth E. Patterson, 76, Winona, died Sunday, May 25, 2003.
Services will be held at a later date.

Harkenrider, Charlotte
Our Beloved Mother, Charlotte Harkenrider, was born on August 22, 1913, in Cleveland, Ohio and died on Friday, May 23, 2003, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.
We take great pride in her many contributions to the heritage of our hometown of Winona and we know that the most lasting legacy of love for our mother's memorial will rest in the hearts of the family she held together. She will be cherished and survived by her three daughters, Carolyn (Donald) Egan, Cherie Harkenrider and H. Marie Harkenrider, by her three grandchildren and by her nine great-grandchildren.
May her courage and commitment continue to guide us, and may her sunny spirit smile always upon us.
Services were Tuesday, May 27, 2003, . at the Chapel of Our Lady, Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Memorials may be given to the Winona Health Auxiliary, Winona.
Funeral arrangements were made by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.

Bengtson, Lawrence
Lawrence "Larry" A. Bengtson, 63, of rural Lewiston died Thursday, May 22, 2003, at Maple Manor Nursing Home in Rochester, Minn. He was born on October 4, 1939, in Minneapolis, Minn. to Paul Frederick and Jane (McAvoy) Bengtson. Larry was raised in Minneapolis where he graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Army in Ethiopia, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf. On June 15, 1968, Larry married Doreen M. Rau in St. Cloud, Minn. He then received his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Winona State University. He was an Army Reservist as well as being a Civilian Technician for the Dept. of the Army, a carpenter and a farmer. Larry was active in Rabbit Breeding and was a nationally known Rabbit Judge. He dedicated his life to perfecting the Dutch Rabbit. Larry was a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association and was involved in the Boy Scouts. He is survived by his wife, Doreen; three sons: Erik A. (Mandy) Bengtson of Winona, Minn., Neil A. (Leah) Bengtson of St. Cloud, Minn. and Paul F. Bengtson of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters: Kirsten (James) Dutton of Bath, England and Melinda R. (Jason) Austin of Cross Plains, Wis.; five grandchildren; two sisters: Jeanne (Gene) Dutton of Arvada, Colorado and Judith Lund of Cedar, Minn. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and Paul. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Rushford Chapel with the Rev. Shawn Haremza officiating. Burial will be in the St. Peter and Paul's Cemetery at Hart, Minn. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Rushford Chapel. The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Alzheimers Association.

Drazkowski, John J.
John J. Drazkowski, 62, Fountain City, Wis., died Thursday, April 24, 2003, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.
He was born November 9, 1940, in Fountain City, Wis., to Joseph G. and Irene V. (Kugler) Drazkowski.
John owned and operated Bay's Inn Tavern in Indian Creek, Wis.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fountain City and of the Fountain City Lions Club.
He served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include a daughter, Sandy (Gary) Lash, of Saginaw, Texas; a granddaughter, Casey; a grandson, Nicholas; five brothers, Ron (Sandy), of Bluff Siding, Wis., Frank (Ann), of Winona, Paul (Terry), of LaCrescent, Minn., Phillip (Cathy), of Ellsworth, Wis., and Ralph (Peggy), of Goodview, Minn.; and five sisters, Joann (Jerry) Engelbert, of Rochester, Minn., Shirley (Don) Kegel, of Green Bay, Wis., Mary Jo (James) Boerboom, of Waseca, Minn., Kathy (Gary) Boyle, of New Hope, Minn., and Paulette (Dick) Paulson, of Minnesota City, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Michael.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, April 28, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fountain City. Interment will be in Piepers Valley Cemetery.
Friends may call Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church.
Pallbearers will be Dan (Slim) Murphy, Terry Ball, Lance Wilson, Dennis Gustafson, Norm Knott and Maynard Smieja.

Raaen, Irving O.
Irving O. Raaen, 83, of 426-39th Avenue, Goodview, Minn., died Friday, April 25, 2003, at Winona Community Memorial Hospital.
He was born October 29, 1919, in McVille, North Dakota, to Iver and Marie (Evenmoe) Raaen. He married Ruth E. Renk on April 28, 1945, in St. Joseph's Church, Winona.
Irving was employed at Marigold Dairies for 30 some years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of Central Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth, of Goodview; two sons, Verlyn (Kay Leslie) Raaen, of Prior Lake, Minn., and Bob (Kim) Raaen, of Jordan, Minn.; three granddaughters, Shannon (Michael) Rohr, of Savage, Minn., and twins, Emily and Jessie Raaen, of Jordan, Minn.; and a brother, Mancer Raaen, of Rochester, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Polly.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 28, at Central Lutheran Church at 2 p.m., with Rev. Scott E. Olson officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home and again on Monday at the church at 1 p.m.

Perrella, Nicholas "Nick"
Nicholas "Nick" Perrella, 82, of Winona, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at his home.
Arrangements are pending with the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

Marsh, Henry Albert
Henry Albert Marsh, 97, of Sauer Memorial Home, formerly of 251 Walnut St., died Monday, April 21, 2003, at the Sauer Home.
Henry "Hank" was born in Manson, Iowa, on May 4, 1905, the son of John V. and Julia (Boardman) Marsh. He moved with his parents at an early age to Chetek, Wis., where he graduated from high school.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as an engineer, participating in the invasion of Normandy on the coast of France. Following the war, he needed a job and was traveling to Denver where his sister lived, when an accident in Fountain City required him to stop in Winona for car repairs. While here, he recognized the job opportunities for work and was hired by Warner-Swazey in 1946, as a draftsman, remaining with the company until his retirement.
He is well-known in the area for his talent as an artist and for his woodworking skills. He was a craftsman carver specializing in Viking ships. Two of his ships are on display in Drugan's Supper Club in Holmen, Wis.
Hank's ability as a draftsman was also widely recognized. He studied under Frank Lloyd Wright at Spring Green, Wis., from 1939-1941.
On April 17, 1947, he married Evelyn E. Nelson in Winona. She preceded him in death on December 30, 1979.
Hank is a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Winona, and the American Legion Post #9, Winona.
He is survived by a niece, Sara Staples of Elkhart Lake, Wis., and many friends.
Graveside services for Henry were Friday, April 25, at Woodlawn Cemetery, with Rev. Maggie Rose Muldoon of St. Paul's Episcopal Church officiating. Members of the American Legion Post #9, Winona, conducted military burial rites.
