Kiral, Virginia
Virginia A. Kiral, 91, formerly of rural Lewiston, Minn., died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.
She was born in Pickwick, Minn., on March 2, 1912, to Maurice and Catherine (McNally) Nagle. On November 16, 1935, she married Joseph John Kiral at St. John's Church in Winona. He died October 27, 2000.
Virginia was a homemaker most of her life, and also worked for several families, prior to her marriage. She and Joe lived and farmed in the Wyattville area for 51 years. In November 2000, Virginia entered St. Anne's Extended Care.
She enjoyed gardening, flowers, family gatherings and cooking. Her homemade buns, sour cream cookies and date pinwheels made family picnics special. She was proud of her family, and most happy when they came to visit. Virginia was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.
Survivors include one daughter, Wilma (Ronald) Mueller, of Winona; three sons, Joseph John (Anne) Kiral, of Hammond, La., Raymond (Nancy) Kiral, of Montgomery, Ill., and Lyle (Marylin) Kiral, of Lewiston; nine grandchildren, Steve (Pam) Mueller, Linda (Ronald) Speltz, Theresa (Kevin) Redig, Kevin (Becky) Mueller, Richard (Tammy) Kiral, Michelle Kiral, Michael Kiral, Jennifer (Shawn) Becker, and Thomas (fiancee, Sara Sloniker) Kiral; sixteen great-grandchildren, Brenda (Paul) Ebertowski, Eric (Melissa) Speltz, Douglas (Jenee) Speltz, Dustin and Brittany Speltz, David, Jessica and Jamie Lynn Redig, Heather, Courtney, Ashley and Dylan Mueller, Mikenna and Benjamin Becker, and Caitlyn and Jamie Kiral; three great-great grandchildren, Gabriella and Gable Speltz, and Auria Speltz; one brother, Roland Nagle, of Lewiston; one sister, Grace Benike, of Clark, S.D.; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Nagle and Jo Biltgen, of Winona; a brother-in-law, Ralph Evanson, of Minnesota City, Minn.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, one sister and eight brothers.
At this time the family would like to thank the St. Anne's staff for the wonderful care given to Virginia. Our heartfelt thanks for your support, caring, and hugs, also.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Preliminary services will be at 10 a.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Steve Mueller, Kevin Mueller, Michael Kiral, Shawn Becker, and great-grandsons, David Redig and Eric Speltz.

Kulas, Eleanor Mary
Eleanor Mary Kulas, 90, Winona, died Sunday, April 13, 2003, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare in Winona.
She was born May 18, 1912, in Winona, to Casimir and Victoria (Romanski) Kowalczyk. She married Charles L. Kulas on November 26, 1940, in St. Stanislaus Kostka Church. He died March 14, 1999.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed at St. Clair's Clothing Store.
Eleanor was a member of St.Stanislaus Kostka Parish and Harvest House. She enjoyed playing cards, watching Twins and Vikings games, and being with family and friends. Her strong faith sustained her during her entire life. Eleanor's family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at St. Anne's for the wonderful care they gave her.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Lou (Roy) Hazelton, of Winona; a son, Charles K. Kulas, of New Hope, Minn.; two grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer) Hazelton, of Rochester, Minn., and Holly (Dan) Lecheler, Rollingstone, Minn.; and five great-grandchildren, Jessica, Paige and Morgan Hazelton, and Tegan and Drew Lecheler.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother, Harry, and five sisters, Josephine, Helen, Frances, Ann and Gertrude.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Preliminary services will be at 1:30 p.m. at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be given to St. Anne Extended Healthcare.

Duden, Ervin
Ervin "Erv" Alvin Duden, 60, died Monday, April 14, 2003, at the Lake Winona Manor in Winona, Minn. Ervin was born April 24, 1942, in Lake City, Minn., to Alvin and Gladys Duden. Ervin graduated from Lake City High School in 1960.
On May 18, 1985, he married Norma Scharping in Winona, Minn. Ervin was an automobile salesman for 20 years at Wagnild and Underdahl Chevrolet in Winona. He was also the General Manager at Walz Buick for 8 years in Winona. Ervin was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club of Winona and the YMCA.
Survivors include his wife, Norma; one son, Troy Duden of St. Paul Park, Minn.; brother, Gary Duden of Stockton, Minn.; three sisters, Gloria (Dennis) Issendorf, Eunice (Allen) Blattner and Dinah (John) Marking all of Lake City, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, one niece and one nephew.
Funeral services are planned for Saturday, April 19, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church in Winona, Minn., with the Reverend Mary Hurmence officiating. Interment will be in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona, Minn. Friends may call at Central United Methodist Church on Friday from 3-5:00 p.m. and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Rothering, Blaise J.
Blaise J. Rothering, 75, of Route 1, Winona, died peacefully of bladder cancer Sunday, April 13, 2003, at is home, surrounded by his family.
Blaise was born on January 16, 1928, in Waumandee, Wis. He was the son of Joseph and Theresa (Grossell) Rothering. The youngest of nine children, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945. Seventeen months later he was injured aboard ship, paralyzing him for over a year. With great determination he did walk again. After being released from the Navy he drove Yellow Cab, Burlington Bus, and milk truck in the Winona area.
In 1948, Blaise married Margaret (Peggy) Daering in Winona, Minn., at St. Thomas Catholic Church. Together they had eight children. In 1960 they moved to the Stockton area where they farmed modestly for the past 43 years.
They farmed everything from dairy cattle, beef, buffalo, pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, and horses. In recent years Blaise enjoyed the Canadian geese that would summer and some even winter on the creek. He looked forward to deer hunting season and was a crack shot. He was also avid on gun safety for his sons and grandchildren. Family and friends will miss the conversations around his kitchen table that were always available at his farm. His family will miss him always.
Blaise is survived by his wife, Peggy (Margaret); two daughters, Mary (Leon) Bronk of Winona, and Patricia (Fred) Gerdes of Winona; four sons, William (Shelley) Rothering of St. Charles, Michael (Leslie) Rothering of Titusville, Fla., Scott Rothering of Winona, and Christopher (Tammie) Rothering of Winona; 20 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marcella Brown of Rochelle, Ill., and Grace Larsen of Winona.
Blaise was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, one son, Timothy Blaise, and one infant daughter.
There will be a Funeral Mass for Blaise at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Minnesota City, Minn., with the Rev. Edward Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Winona American Legion. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Lewiston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Pallbearers will be Bill, Michael, Scott, Chris, Tom and Blaise Anthony Rothering. Honorary pallbearers will be Blaise's grandchildren.
Memorials are preferred to go to St. Paul's Catholic Church in Minnesota City, and the Winona Hospice program. The family would like to thank Winona Hospice for their loving care and help to the family.

Thill, Audrey
Audrey Evelyn Thill, 79, of St. Anne Extended Healthcare, died Saturday, April 12, 2003, at St. Anne. She was born on May 23, 1923, in Winona, the daughter of Thomas and Sophia (Koenig) Corcoran.
She married Elmer P. Thill on Oct. 5, 1943, in Rushford, Minn. He preceded her in death on January 31, 1980.
Audrey was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona.
She is survived by a daughter, Eileen (Thomas) Gora, Winona; sons, Richard Thill, Winona, and Deanna Thill, Winona, Lyle Thill, Winona, and Pat Thill, LaCrosse, Wis., Wayne (JoAnn) Thill, Winona, David (Kim) Thill, Winona, and Jeffrey Thill, Winona; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; brothers, Conrad (Delores) Corcoran, Big Bend, Wis., and Daniel (Pat) Corcoran, Rushford, Minn.; sisters, Louise (Leo) Heppelmann, Bellechester, Minn., and Bernadette (Thomas) Krage, Houston, Minn.
Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer, son, Stephen, brother, Joseph, and a sister, Mary Blaschka.
Many wonder if you could ever meet a woman who had so many great qualities....well we have.
Our mom and grandma is a woman who has lead a life many wish for. Her faith was as strong as her heart. She touched many through her laugh and smile. Her generosity goes beyond words, from making Sunday dinner and weekday lunches for her family, to handing out cookies and treats to the neighbor kids. She loved to polka, strawberry sundaes, dog visits, but she especially loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was everyone's "Grandma" and we will miss her dearly.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, April 14, 2003, at 12 noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona, Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Interment was in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Wilson, Minn.
Casket bearers were her grandsons, Brian, Lance, Jesse and Eric Thill, Travis and Brent Gora.
A memorial is being arranged.

Glenna, Bertram
Bertram Glenna, 69, of Winona died Sunday, November 25, 2001, at his home in the Valley View Tower. He was born on May 26, 1932, in Peterson, Minnesota to Benny and Mary (Thorud) Glenna. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Bertram was a disabled veteran who enjoyed working with and spending time with his family. He is survived by one brother: Richard (Marion) Glenna of Lanesboro, Minn; three sisters: Ovedia Ellefson of Rushford, Minn., Norma Haslerud of Roseau, Minn., and Muriel (Carlton) Thomson of Austin, Minn; and also many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and one sister. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday at Rushford Lutheran Church in Rushford with the Rev. David Watson officiating. Burial will be in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Cook Rushford Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Cady, Michael
Michael "Mike" J. Cady, 44, of Peterson died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at his home. Mike was born on January 30, 1959, in Winona, Minn., to James and Bernett (Hengel) Cady. Mike grew up in the Peterson area and was a 1977 graduate of Peterson High School. Mike married Shawn Becker in 1982, they were later divorced. He worked in his family's business, Peterson Trout Farm. Mike most recently worked as a realtor at Laurie Daniel Real Estate Agency in Winona. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rushford. Mike enjoyed spending time with his family, hiking, camping, fishing and cars, especially his 1978 Corvette Pace Car. He is survived by his mother, Bernett of Peterson, two daughters: Miranda (Adam) Sickles of St. Charles and Bridgette Cady of Rushford; one son: Justin Cady of Rushford; two brothers: Dan Cady of Onalaska, Wis. and Bruce Cady of Hibbing, Minn.; one sister, Laura Cady of Winona, Minn. and four nieces. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Jim. There will be a memorial mass for Mike at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 17, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Rushford with the Rev. William Kulas officiating. Burial of his cremated body will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Winona, Minn. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes Rushford Chapel where there will be a 5:00 p.m. prayer service.

Poeppel, Irene E.
Irene E. Poeppel, 90, formerly of 4075-9th Avenue, Goodview, Minn., died Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor.
She was born April 3, 1913, in Winona, to Edward A. and Lillian W. (Bohn) Osowski. She married Milton F. Poeppel on November 16, 1936. He preceded her in death.
Irene was employed at Williams Book Store for many years, assisting so many of Winona's residents. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish.
Irene and Milton were lifelong residents of Winona and traveled extensively throughout Canada and the United States. They wintered in Mesa, Ariz. for many years. Irene continued this tradition long after Milton's death.
She is survived by a sister, Viola (Howard) Goss of Winona; a brother-in-law, Chester Krall of Milwaukee, Wis.; a special friend, Betty Biltgen of Goodview; nephews, Edward Krall, John (Patti) Goss, and Michael (Marcia) Goss; and nieces, Sandra Murphy and Kayleen (David) Arneson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and sister, Evelyn Krall.
Private burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
If one wishes, memorials may be directed to Irene's sister, Viola Goss, 222 High Forest St., Winona, MN 55987. A memorial is being arranged.

Gromek, Steve F.
Steve F. Gromek, age 88, died on Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona.
Steve Francis was born on January 28, 1915, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Joseph Michael and Gladys Dolores (Wrobleski) Gromek. On June 17, 1941, he married Dorothy P. Stszemp at Holy Cross Church, Minneapolis.
He owned and operated Steve's Bar, Minneapolis; Circus Bar, Rochester; and Steve's Cocktail Lounge, Winona, retiring in 1976, with 47 years in the bar business.
Steve was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona; B.P.O. Elks Lodge #327, Winona; a life member of the American Legion Post #9; D.A.V.- Hiawatha Chapter #35, Winona; and the Knights of Columbus, #639, Winona. He also served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, James (Joni) Gromek, Winona, and Joseph "Jay" Gromek, Winona; a daughter, Terry (Thomas) Tweedy, Winona; five grandchildren: Todd (Deb) Tweedy, Litchfield Park, Ariz., Tim (Tiffany) Tweedy, Neenah, Wis., T.J. Tweedy, Stoughton, Wis., Abby Gromek, Winona and Sada Gromek, River Falls, Wis.; one great-grandson, Andrew Tweedy; two brothers, Chester (Marge) Gromek, Minneapolis and Thedore (Delores) Gromek, Minneapolis; one sister, Cecelia Jakacki, Minneapolis and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Walter and one sister, Anastasia Audette.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, May 17, 2003 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe, officiating. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, Minn., with veterans burial rites provided by the American Legion Leon J. Wetzel Post #9, Winona, Minn..
Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Friday, May 16, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday, from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of service. On Friday, there will be an Elks Lodge #327 memorial service at 6:00 p.m. and a wake service at 7:30 p.m. both at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society, 882 Seventh Street, NW; Rochester, Minn. 55901 or the Minn./DAK Chapter Alzheimer's Association, 4550 West 77th Street; Suite 200; Edina, Minn. 55435.

Solberg, Merle F.
Merle F. Solberg, 76, of S1589 State Highway 27, Augusta, passed away Saturday morning, November 30, 2002, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire.
Merle, son of Fredrick and Mabel (Wilsey) Solberg, was born July 10, 1926, in Yucatan, Minnesota. He was baptized on November 11, 1934, and confirmed on May 18, 1941, at Houston Lutheran Church in Houston, Minnesota. He attended Houston Elementary School and graduated from Houston High School. In 1944 he entered the United States Navy and was stationed in Winona, Minnesota, where he attended St. Mary's College. He also served in Iowa. Before his discharge on December 17, 1946, he served as an Aviation Cadet in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Mae Hemker on November 18, 1950, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bangor, Wisconsin. In the first few years of their married life, the couple lived in Minnesota, where Merle worked as a milk tester in Money Creek, and as a butter maker in Bratsburg. They later moved to Wisconsin where he worked as a cheese maker in West Salem, and as a butter maker in Sparta. The couple then moved to Hampshire, Ill., where Merle was employed as a cheese maker for Country's Delight. While in Hampshire he also drove school bus for 22 years. In 1986, Merle and Dorothy moved to the Town of Ludington, rural Augusta. Merle continued to drive school bus, driving 8 years for the Augusta School District.
He was a member of the Hampshire American Legion, Post # 680, and presently was a member of the Augusta American Legion, Post # 291. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ludington, where he had served as Trustee and Church Council Chairman, and was the current Chairman of AAL Branch 1761. He was the Ludington Township Chairman. In Merle's spare time he thoroughly enjoyed working with wood, from building craft items and furniture for his family and friends, to building his own home.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Solberg, of Augusta; 3 daughters, Donna Condron of Neillsville, Ruth Solberg and Mike Phillips of Brackett, Karen and her husband, Ralph Meyer, of Perham, Minn.; 3 brothers, Bradley Solberg of Houston, Minn., Glenn and Avis Solberg of Ettrick, Eugene and Diane Solberg of LaCrosse; 4 sisters, Helen Gehres of Stockton, Minn., Shirley and Paul Vetter of St. Peter, Minn., Winnifred and Leigh (Bud) Fitting of New Brighton, Minn., June and Dale Omodt of Houston; brother-in-law, John Palmer of LaCrescent, Minn.; 9 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 4 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elizabeth Palmer, and son-in-law, Bernard Condron.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, December 3, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in the town of Ludington, with Pastor Mark Mischnick officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
