Helgemoe, Rodney W.
Rodney W. Helgemoe, 80, died Monday, December 2, 2002, at the Lake Winona Manor in Winona, Minn. Rodney was born March 7, 1922 in Black River Falls, Wisc., to Edwin and Ida (Gaustad) Helgemoe. Rodney served in the Army Air Corp during WWII and was stationed in Brazil. On September 28, 1946, he married Doris Milnarsek at Central Lutheran Church in Winona, Minn. They had been married for 56 years. Rodney was a 39-year employee for Northern States Power, retiring in 1987. Rodney was a member of Central Lutheran Church, where he celebrated his love for God and practiced his strong faith. He was also a member of the American Legion and Eagle Club in Winona. Along with his firm faith in God, Rodney was a lover of all animals including his longtime companion, his dog Sandy.
Survivors include his wife, Doris; two daughters, Carol Keller of Belleville, Wisc. and Sharon (Stephen) Goergen of Rochester, Minn.; three grandchildren, Kathy (Edward) Mielke, Melinda (George) Dressler and Marianne Goergen; and five great-grandchildren, Damien, Jessica, Jeremy, Joshua and Terry. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Glen, Maynard and Leonard, and three sisters, Evine, Edna and Verna.
Funeral services are planned for Saturday, December 7, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church with the Rev. Michelle Rem officiating. Rodney's body will be cremated following the funeral service. Friends may call at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Burke Winona Chapel on Friday from 5-8:00 p.m. where there will be a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Military Honors and pallbearers will be provided by the American Legion Post 9 of Winona.
Memorials may be directed to the Central Lutheran Church Building Fund or Mississippi Ave. Alzheimer's Ward of Lake Winona Manor.

Doelle, Glen
Glen Doelle, age 63, of S 2747 River Road, Fountain City, WI, died peacefully on Friday, November 29, 2002 at St. Michael's Lutheran Home, Fountain City.
Glen was born at home in Doelle's Valley on January 20, 1939 to Frank and Lena (Wolfe) Doelle. He attended Doelle Valley School, St. Mary's School and graduated from Fountain City High School in 1957.
After graduation he joined the army, where he earned a sharp-shooter's medal, was stationed in Germany, and was honorably discharged in 1959.
Glen married Ruthie Bremer on June 22, 1963, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Arcadia, WI. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2000.
He ran the Mobil Station in Fountain City for many years. He then worked for the Burlington Northern-Sante Fe Railroad for 30 years until his retirement in December 2000.
Glen had a strong faith and tremendous love of family. He is survived by his two daughters, Wendy (Rich) Baures, Fountain City and Robin (Pete) Woychik, Independence, WI. There were none as precious to him as his five grandchildren: John, Carrie and Katie Baures, and Rachel and Ben Woychik. He is also survived by one brother Darrold (Mary "Ducy") Doelle; one sister-in-law Romelle (Jim) Baertsch; and many special nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Shirley Platteter and Wynell Platteter
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City with Rev. John Parr, celebrant. Interment will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Fountain City in the spring.
Friends may call Monday, December 2, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Fountain City and the rosary will be recited at 7:30 PM. Visitation will also be at the church on Tuesday, one hour prior to the mass.
Casket bearers will be Dan, Tom, Joe and Bob Platteter, Kenny Baertsch and John Baures.
The memories of his quick wit, the twinkle in his eye, and the many fun times spent on the farm are what will sustain us through this difficult time.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Fountain City, WI.

Theisen, Sister Gertrude Ann
Sister Gertrude Ann Theisen, 82, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minn., who served as an educator and administrative assistant for SEMCIL, INC., died December 2, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
Born Mary Alice Theisen on April 13, 1920, in Caledonia, Minn., Sister Gertrude Ann entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1938 from St. James Parish, LaCrosse, Wis. She made profession of vows in 1941 and began her teaching ministry at St. Joseph Parish, Winona. She taught in various schools in Minnesota including Iona, Austin, Owatonna, Hayfield, Minneapolis and Winona. From 1951-60 she taught in the catechetical program in Chatfield, Minn. She came to Rochester and had charge of Assisi Heights activities and from 1973-79 served in a similar capacity at Tau Center, Winona. In 1981 she returned to Rochester when she became the Secretary/Receptionist at the Rochester Center for Independent Living. In 1986 she received the Mayor's Medal of Honor and in 1995 was the Administrative Assistant for SEMCIL, INC.
Sister Gertrude is survived by her Franciscan Community and by two sisters, Patricia McCormick of LaCrosse, Wis., and Teresa Pretasky of Tripoli, Wis.; and a brother, Joseph Theisen of LaCrosse.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, December 5, in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, with Rev. Jim Buryska officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Speltz, Josephine "Jo-Jo"
Josephine "Jo-Jo" Speltz, 61, of Reno, Nevada, passed away Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
She was born June 19, 1941, in Winona, to Frank and Eleanor Budnick. She married Richard Speltz.
She was a dealer for Fitzgerald's Hotel and Casino for the last 22 years.
Survivors include her mother, Eleanor, of Lake Winona Manor; daughters, Peggie (Richard) Klink of Trempealeau, Wis. and Holly Speltz of Reno; a son, Jason (Stacie) Speltz of Reno; a brother, Frank Budnick of Winona; a sister, Sophie Walski of Winona; and four grandchildren, Christopher (Shannon) Stenzel of Hampton, Minn., Nicole Stenzel and Justin Skrukrud, both of Trempealeau, and Madison Speltz of Reno.
She was preceded in death by her father, Frank, a brother, Robert Marsolek, and a sister, Eleanor Barbian.
A tree will be planted at Rancho San Rafael at a later date, in her memory.
A celebration of her life was held Friday, December 6, in Reno.
A loving mother, grandmother and friend to all, she will be deeply missed.
She is now an "angel among us."

Riggle, Timothy M.
Timothy Michael Riggle died in his sleep at his home in Rushford on Tuesday, December 3, 2002. Tim was born on June 8, 1955, at Ellsworth A.F.B., South Dakota, to Virgil Riggle and Sandra (Zeller-Riggle) Overland.
Tim graduated from Peterson High School in Peterson, Minn., and Brooks Barber School in St. Paul, Minn. He operated Tim's Barber Shop in Rushford for 22 years. Tim completed a tour in the United States Navy in 1978.
Tim married Chris Stevens in 1979. They have one son, Jacob Timothy, age 17.
Tim is survived by his son and wife, his parents, Virgil (Donna) Riggle, and Sandra (Donald) Overland, two sisters, Cindy (Bill) Grindland, Crystal (Bob) Heublein, and grandmother, Alice Riggle.
Extended family include step- sisters and -brothers, Susan Strom, Martha Stensgard, Erik Overland, Scott Overland, Kim Selke, Todd Selke, and Pam Going, and by aunts, uncles and cousins.
Tim loved jokes, music, painting, family, and most of all, his precious Jake.
God keep you in the palm of his hand.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, at Rushford Lutheran Church in Rushford with the Rev. James Scaife officiating. Burial will be in the West Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Peterson, Minn. Friends may call from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be directed to the Rushford ­ Peterson Band Program. Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Rushford Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Helland, Alvin C.
Alvin C. Helland, 82, of Whalan, Minn., died Thursday, December 05, 2002, at the Preston Good Samaritan Care Center in Preston, Minn. Alvin was born on April 26, 1920, in Highland, Minn., to Carl and Tilla (Flattum) Helland. He was raised, in the Highland and Whalan area. Alvin married Helen Myer in 1939. They were later divorced. He married Mabel Odegarden in 1953. They were later divorced. Alvin married LaVelle Feine in 1972. LaVelle died in 1993. He farmed until 1946, at which time he bought and operated the Whalan Grocery Store. Alvin then was a road construction worker which he did until his retirement in the early 1980s. Alvin enjoyed hunting and raising exotic animals. He was a member of the Whalan Lutheran Church in Whalan and the Sons of Norway in Lanesboro, Minn. Alvin is survived by two sons: Ardell (Beverly) Helland of Edgerton, Wis., and Robert Helland of Gurnee, Ill.; one daughter, Mary Lou (Raymond) Murray of Gurnee, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Alvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, and one sister. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 9, at the Whalan Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.

Gernes, Sophia
Sophia Marie (Boerboom) Gernes, 93, formerly of Wilson Township died Thursday evening, November 28, at St. Anne Extended Healthcare.
Sophia was born February 14, 1909, in Grandview Township near Ghent, Minn., to Carnelius and Marie (Vanden Berghe) Boerboom. She graduated from St. Agnes High School in Ghent in 1924 and from School of Agriculture, University of Minnesota, in 1929. She was a County 4H Club-Agent in Pipestone County and taught at the Pipestone Indian School. While attending the School of Agriculture she met Albert Gernes. They were married on October 25, 1932, at St. Eloi Church in Ghent. The couple lived and farmed in Wilson Township. She entered St. Anne in 1991. Albert died in 1995.
Sophia was a member of Immaculate Conception Church of Wilson Township, where she had served as organist for 30 years. She also was a club leader for the Wilson Fireflies 4H Club, served as Deanery President of Winona Council of Catholic Women and National Rural Life Chairman. Sophia had a special love for babies and small children.
Survivors include two sons, Jerome (Mary) Gernes of Winona and Norbert (Pat) Gernes of Eden Prairie, two daughters, Cornelia (Leo) Kryzer of Lewiston and Sonia Gernes of the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., 23 grandchildren, 51 great-grandchildren, two sisters, Evelyn Berends and Clarice (Bill) Versaevel, both of Marshall, four brothers, Harry Boerboom of Ghent, Cornelius Boerboom of Marshall, Andrew and Walter Boerboom, both of Cottonwood. In addition to her husband Albert, three infant daughters, three brothers; John, Joseph and Francis, and two sisters, Mary and Theresa, have died.
There was a Funeral Mass 10:30 AM Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Wilson with the Rev. John Sauer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hoff Funeral Home's ­ Burke Winona Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.

Bechter, Alice Mae
Alice Mae Bechter, 97, of Lake Winona Manor and formerly of 1775 West Broadway, Winona, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at Lake Winona Manor. She was born in Winona on Sept. 23, 1905, the daughter of Jacob S. and Rose (Halverson) Bechter.
She is a graduate of Winona State College and the University of Minnesota. She then taught in elementary schools in Hayfield, MN., Waseca, MN., Iron Mountain, MI. and for 35 years in Minneapolis Public Schools.
She is a life long member of Central Lutheran Church; member of Minneapolis, Minnesota and National Retired Teachers Associations.
Alice is survived by cousins, Jean (Robert) Masyga, Winona, MN. and Donald (Patricia) Darling, Dillon, MT.
A memorial service to celebrate Alice's life will be held on Friday, Dec. 27, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. at Central Lutheran Church, Winona, Rev. Michelle Rem officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona. Friends may call at the church on Friday from noon to time of services at 1:00P.M.

Feuling, Ralph E.
Ralph E. Feuling, 74, of Whitehall, Wis., and formerly of Arcadia, Wis., passed away at his home on Thursday, December 19, 2002.
He was born in Arcadia on March 22, 1928, to Raymond and Polly (Kampa) Feuling. On June 5, 1965, Ralph married Avis Trott in Racine, Wis.
He worked for Bush Brothers' Canning Co. for many years and was a volunteer driver for Trempealeau County. He also worked at the Wonder Wash car wash in Arcadia. Norman was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member Arcadia's Bautch-Kokott-Johnson VFW Post #10671 and Tickfer-Erickson American Legion Post #17.
He is survived by his wife, Avis, of Whitehall; 1 daughter, Kandra Feuling, Whitehall; 1 granddaughter, Hope Feuling (Tim Knapp, who was also like a son to Ralph); 5 great-grandchildren, Meckella, Lane, Anastasia, Timothy Jr., and Jade; 2 brothers, Edmund (Martha) Feuling of Quartz, Ariz., Richard (Carol) Feuling of Winona, Minn.; 4 sisters, Jeanette (Marvin) Conrad and Adeline Conrad, both of Arcadia, Kathy Molitor of Winona, Judith (Gerald) Neitzel of Alma, Wis.; and 1 sister-in-law, Louise Feuling of Arcadia.
Preceding Ralph in death were his parents; 2 brothers, Robert and LaVerne, Sr.; and 1 sister, Mary.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2002, at the Killian Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Polcyn officiating. Burial was in the Cornell Cemetery in Cornell, WI. Military Rites were held by the VFW Post #10671 and the Tickfer-Erickson Post #17.
Nilles, Myron A.

Myron Arnold Nilles, 56, of St. Paul and formerly of Rollingstone passed away Friday evening December 20, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul. He was employed in the family remodeling business in St. Paul.
He was born April 25, 1946, to Arnold and Ardella (Scherbring) Nilles in Winona and was raised in Rollingstone. Myron graduated with honors from Holy Trinity High School in 1964 and from St. Mary's College, Winona, in 1968. He completed graduate studies in history and journalism at Marquette University, Winona State University, and the University of Minnesota.
Myron wrote often on topics relating to local social history. His book on Wapasha's Prairie was published by the Winona County Historical Society as a 1976 Bicentennial Project and later reprinted. His many articles were characterized by a finely crafted prose that was exceptionally clear and eloquent.
Myron is survived by his mother, Ardella Scherbring Nilles, Rollingstone, a sister Mary Nilles, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Rollingstone, three brothers in St. Paul - Brad (Laurie), Kerry (Kathy), Brian (Lora) - as well as aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, including his godson, Alex Nilles, numerous cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Kent Gerard Nilles.
There will be a Funeral Mass held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 27, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Rollingstone with Reverend Michael Cronin officiating. The St. Nicholas Society of Rollingstone, of which Myron was a member, will provide an honor guard. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at Holy Trinity Church from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, December 26, and one hour before the Funeral Mass on Friday. A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. on in the church Thursday.
Hoff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Decker, Vincent E.
Vincent E. Decker, 73, of Rochester, Minn., died Wednesday, November 27, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, of emphysema
He was born July 7, 1929, in Fairwater in Elba Township, Winona, the son of Nicholas and Lillian (Claussen) Decker, attended Fairwater School, and entered the U.S. Army. He married Dorothy Rademacher on May 6, 1955, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Theilman. She died February 26, 1977. He and Loretta Bertschinger were married October 4, 1986.
He worked as a union carpenter in Rochester for Alvin E. Benike on the Mayo Clinic and many local commercial projects, enjoyed playing cards, and was an AA member.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Donald of Elgin, Eugene of Kansas City, and Kevin of Wanamingo; one daughter, Denise (Randy) Bassett of Kellogg; one grandson, of Arvada, Colo.; one brother, Cecil (Chris) of Millville; and a sister-in-law, Josie Decker of Lake City.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; three infant daughters, Debra, Karen and Mary; an infant son, Vincent; a brother and two sisters who died in infancy; and his brother, Bernard.
A funeral service was held Saturday, November 30, at Ranfranz Funeral Home Chapel, with Father Donald Connelly officiating. Burial was in St. Joachim's Catholic Cemetery in Plainview. Military rites were conducted by the Plainview American Legion.
The Ranfranz Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
