Gerson, Bernard S.

Bernard S. "Bernie" Gerson, 87, of 355 East Mark St., died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 1, 1913 in Minneapolis. He married Bernnes R. Krakow on April 29, 1935, at Decorah, Iowa.

He was a Sergeant in the National Guard for 5-1/2 years.

Bernard was the owner/operator of Sugar Loaf Standard from 1933-1946, owner of the Rustic Tavern from 1946-1954, owner of Bernie's Bar and Grill from 1954-1957, and was owner/operator of Bernie's DX Station from 1957-1975. He was also the manager of Rocky's Tackle Box.

Her was a member of Central Lutheran Church, an honorary life member, Past Exalted Ruler and Elk of the Year of the BPOE #327, a life member of the FOE #1243, life member of Redmen Tribe #20, and a member of the Winona Athletic Club.

Bernard is survived by his wife, Bernnes; sons, Scott and Garry (Judith) Gerson, both of Winona; grandchildren, Dana (Darren) Hilleshiem, Andrew (Morwen) Gerson, Rebecca (Brad) Palbicki, and Corey Gerson; two great-grandchildren; and a half-brother, Robert Bitzen of Winona.

Bernard was preceded in death by a son, Bernard "Butch, " a stillborn daughter, and a grandson, Matt Gerson.

Funeral services will be Thursday, April 5, at 11 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church with Rev. Scott E. Olson officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home, where the BPOE #327 will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church after 10 a.m. Thursday.

Casketbearers will be Dick Ledebuhr, Dave Schultz, Andrew Gerson, Bruce Fuller, George Kostner and Bill Doerer.

Military rites will be conducted by the Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post #9.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Winona Area Hospice Coalition.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home is assisting with the arrangements.

Reps, H. Jeanette

H. Jeanette Reps, 72, of rural Utica, Minn., passed away Saturday, March 31, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, LaCrosse, Wis., a week after suffering a heart attack.

Jeanette was born June 29, 1928, to G. Robert and Helen (Nuszloch) Randall. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1946. Jeanette and Paul Reps Jr. were married on August 28, 1948 in Winona.

She was a member of St. Paul's, United Church of Christ/Evangelical Church in America of Lewiston.

She and her husband farmed in the Fremont area their entire married life. Jeanette was known as a most loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and most of all spending time with her family. She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.

Jeanette is survived by her husband, Paul; two sons, Randy (Lori) of Lewiston, Minn. and Dean (Kristi) of Utica; two daughters, Leann (Ordell) Jacobson of Rushford, Minn. and Lonna (Dave) Benson of Lewiston; seventeen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law.

Her parents, two brothers, an infant son, and an infant grandson preceded her in death.,

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 4 at Faith Lutheran Church in St. Charles (due to the current construction at St. Paul's Church). Burial will be in the Lewiston Public cemetery followed by lunch at St. Paul's Church Fellowship Hall in Lewiston.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be given in memory of Jeanette to the St. Paul's Building Fund.

Hoff Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Homan, Sister Caedmon

Sister Caedmon Homan, 95, a Franciscan Sister of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes, Rochester, Minn., who served as an educator, died Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Assisi Heights, Rochester.

Born Odelia Elizabeth Homan on December 17, 1905 in Lismore, Minn., Sister Caedmon entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1922 from St. Anthony Parish, Lismore. She made profession of vows in 1924 and began her teaching ministry at St. Mary Academy in Owatonna. She taught in various schools in Minnesota including Winona, St. James, Rollingstone, Sleepy Eye, Waseca and Austin. From 1941-43 and 1954-59 she taught at St. John's and Lourdes High School in Rochester. She also taught in Ironton, Ohio and Chicago. From 1971-1980 Sister Caedmon served as archivist at the College of Saint Teresa, Winona. Sister did research for a publication of the history of the second-quarter-century of the Sisters of St. Francis, Rochester, entitled "Years of Vision 1903-1928" and "Years of Expansion 1928-1970" which was a history for the Centennial year - 1977 - of the Sisters of St. Francis.

Sister Caedmon is survived by her Franciscan Community and by one brother, Loyal Homan of Adrian, Minn.; and one sister, Alvina Cyphers of Acme, Penn.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, April 3 in the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, Assisi Heights, with Rev. Jack Krough officiating. Burial was in Calvary cemetery.

Gosse, James Thomas

James (Jim) Thomas Gosse, a lifelong resident of Wabasha, Minn., died Sunday, April 1, 2001 at his daughter's home in Rochester, Minn. of cancer.

Mr. Gosse was born May 1, 1925 in Wabasha, Minn. to August Gosse and Rose Stroot Gosse. He attended St. Felix High School in Wabasha, graduating in 1943. On July 30, 1966, he married Mary M. Schuh at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Rollingstone, Minn.

He served as an altar boy ten years at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha. His high school career included basketball and football. He served with the U.S. Navy in World War II for 34 months in the Pacific Theater. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight, charter member of Viking Ticket Holder Fan Club Wabasha, Minn., Wabasha VFW Post #4086, and Rochester American Legion Post #92. He loved boating, gardening and yard work.

He was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha. He was club manager for several Wabasha area establishments.

Survivors include his wife; and a daughter, Andrea M. Gosse of Rochester, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and a brother.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Family prefers memorials.

Arrangements are by Schleicher Funeral Homes Plainview Chapel, Plainview, Minn.

Acheff, Bertha Augusta

Bertha Augusta Acheff, 98, of 316 East Broadway, died Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Buffalo County, Wis., on August 28, 1902, the daughter of Frederick and Bertha Seeling Wild. She married George R. Acheff on June 21, 1923 at St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church, Winona, and at the time of his death on November 22, 1991 they had been married for 69 years.

She was a member of St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church and was active in its Ladies Aid for many years and also in the sewing circle. Her grandchildren referred to her as the first Martha Stewart because of her expert abilities at sewing, tatting, knitting, quilting, decorating, gardening, baking and cooking. All were her artistic abilities. She gave especially to her church, family and friends.

Bertha is survived by daughters, Betty Acheff of Winona, Irene (Richard) Renk of Winona, Barbara (James) Swanson of Naperville, Ill, and Mara (Richard) Repinski of Fountain City, Wis.; grandchildren, Linda Renk, Kimberly (Greg) Dryer, R.J. (Mary) Renk, Christopher Renk, Stephanie (William) Ballard, Stacey (John) Schillerstrom, Becky (Mark) Schocklee, Richard "Butch" Repinski, George Repinski, Meg Repinski, and Beth (Kevin) Ristow; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, three brothers, and a son, George, in 1964.

Funeral services will be Friday, April 6 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Timothy Dost officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 10-11 a.m.

Casketbearers will be R.J. and Christopher Renk, George and Richard Repinski, Kevin Ristow and John Schillerstrom.

Memorial gifts may be directed to St. Martin's Church, Community Memorial Hospital, or to the donor's choice.

Douglas, Myrtle F.

Myrtle F. Douglas, 80, of 1102 East Sanborn St. died Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at her home.

She was born June 21, 1921, at Dunn Center, ND, to George and Lillian Frey Erpelding. She married Marvin Douglas on December 24, 1941 in Winona.

She is a member of McKinley United Methodist Church.

Myrtle was a homemaker most of her life, but had worked part time at Randall's, Kresge's, Woolworth's and McDonalds.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin; a son, Ross (Lorie) Douglas of Witoka, Minn.; a daughter, Corinne (Doug) Nosbisch of Black River Falls, Wis.; grandchildren, Kyle and Kara Nosbisch and Nicole and Misty Douglas; and a sister, Fern McDonald of Mankato, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, Wayne Wesley Douglas, a brother, Earl Erpelding, and a sister, Evelyn Rieman.

Funeral services were Friday, November 30, at McKinley United Methodist Church, with Rev. Shirley Duncanson officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.

Martin-Myhre Funeral Home assisted with the arrangements.

Glenna, Bertram

Bertram Glenna, 69, of Valley View Tower, died Sunday, November 25, 2001 at his home.

Funeral services were Thursday, November 29, at Rushford Lutheran Church, Rushford, Minn. Burial was in Rushford Lutheran cemetery.

Boyer, Douglas Delos

Douglas Delos Boyer, M.D., of Winona, died Monday, November 26, 2001, after a nine month battle with kidney cancer.

A memorial will be held Sunday, December 2, at 2 p.m. at Lourdes Hall, 457 Gould St., with a reception to follow.
