Freeman, Mark Orrin

Our father and husband, Mark Orrin Freeman, 59, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2001 at his home in Winona.

He was born to Mark J. and Virginia (Simmons) Freeman in Flint, Mich., June 12, 1942. With the guidance of his parents, he was baptized at Attica Methodist Church. As a young boy, he attended 3rd Ward Elementary School and had a paper route. He continued on at Lapeer High School, where he graduated in 1961. Pursuing a career, he attended the Michigan State Police Academy in East Lansing, Mich.

In 1963, he began his employment with the Michigan State Police as a state trooper and was stationed out of White Pigeon in southwestern Michigan. Later, he was involved in sales and marketing with several well-known companies. Mark moved to Winona in 1985 when he joined Watkins Inc. Prior to that, he had been with W.T. Rawleigh Co. In 1991, he joined his wife, Judy, in operating Judy's Discount Store for the past eleven years.

On December 11, 1965, he married Judith Carol Misener, the love of his life, at United Methodist Church in Lapeer, Mich. Together, with the spirit of God, their love created five children, Mark, Roark, Allison, Amanda and Ashley. The quality of that love lives on in their offspring and soon-to-be-born grandchildren.

With his wife and family, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, skiing, and snowmobiling, as well as many other things. He was well known for his storytelling, true or not. Mark was a joy to be around with his unique sense of humor. He was always making friends and family roar with laughter.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association and believed strongly in the right to keep and bear arms.

He would do anything to increase his family's time together. Taking trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area was always at the top of the list of vacation spots. Deer hunting in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan had been a tradition since Mark was 15-years-old. This special time in November was looked forward to each year. His family plans on carrying on the tradition.

Mark is survived by his wife of 35 years, Judy; five children, Mark and (Michele) Freeman, Roark and (Shelbi) Freeman, Allison and (Jay) Tolleson, Ashley Freeman and (fiance Chris Harvey), and Amanda Freeman and (special friend Mike LaVallie); his father, Mark J. Freeman; his only sister, Sally Jo Swadling; and his mother-in-law, Alice Misener.

We are grateful for all who befriended our dad in his journey here on Earth and are blessed by those who have comforted him and his family with their love and prayers.

Visitation will be from 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church with the funeral service immediately following.
