Maloney, Mary Jane

Mary Jane Maloney, 72, died Sunday, July 22, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Mary was born July 20, 1929 in Winona, to Fredrick and Mabel (Smith) Maloney.

Mary graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947 and had been living in the Detroit, Mich. metropolitan area for 30 years working as an administrator for the Union Belt Railroad. She retired in 1992 and returned to Winona in 1993.

She was a member of Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church in Winona.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Elaine Maloney of Winona; seven nieces and nephews, Michael J. Maloney of Rochester, Minn., Dennis Maloney of Winona, Ben Hoffman, Patricia Maloney Lawson of Pennsylvania, Patricia Maloney Kolberg of Panama City, Fla, Fredrick Maloney of Illinois, and Michael Maloney of Alaska; special friends, Marlene Strukel and Kassy Sagen, both of Winona; and Mary's loving feline companions.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, James, Melvin Mike, D. Patrick, and Robert, and a sister, Margaret.

A Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 26, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Winona. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.

Friends may call at Hoff Funeral Homes - Burke Winona Chapel on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. where there will be a Christian Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday.

Hoff Funeral Homes - Burke Winona Chapel is assisting with arrangements.

Laumb, Gerald W.

Jerry Laumb, 51, of Rushford, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at his home of cancer.

Jerry was born on January 27, 1950, in LaCrosse, Wis. to George and Bernice (Thorud) Laumb. He married Barbara Carrier on March 16, 1968.

He worked at Farmer's Elevator in Rushford, for nine years, and at Cenex as an LP gas driver for 21 years.

He is survived by his wife, Barb; one son, Jay (Amber) Laumb of Kasson, Minn.; two daughters: Amy Geiwitz of Houston, Minn., and Sarah (Darin) Meyer of Rushford; four grandchildren: Heather, Matthew, and Ethan Geiwitz, and Brady Laumb; seven brothers: George Laumb, Jr., Mike (Rena) Laumb, Don (Lexie Boehmke) Laumb, David (Lori Krage) Laumb, all of Rushford, James (Donna) Laumb of Clarksville, Tenn., Richard (Jeanne) Laumb of Texas, Randy (Cindy) Laumb of Washington State; six sisters: Nancy (Lewie) Benson, Debbie (Allen) Heiden, Joyce (Bill) Miller, all of Rushford, Phyllis (Walt) Porter of Orange Park, Florida, Beverly Porter, and Lori (Jim) Booth, both of Winona; many brothers and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, George and Bernice, mother-in-law, Wanda Carrier, brother in law, Jim Porter, and nephew Jessie Carrier.

Jerry's funeral service was Tuesday, July 24, at the Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Cook Rushford Chapel assisted the family with funeral arrangements.

Judy, Norman G.

Norman G. Judy, 80, Rt. 4, Winona, died Monday, July 23, 2001 at his home.

He was born September 18, 1920 in Springfield, SD, to Joseph and Lucinda (Vanderploge) Judy. He married LaVina V. Sulick.

Arrangements are being completed with the Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home.

Schweitzer, Patricia "Pat" Barbara

Patricia "Pat" Barbara Schweitzer, 65, of St. Charles, Minn., died Tuesday, July 24, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Pat was born on March 3, 1935 to Vernon and Ethel (Stephenson) Johnson in Chatfield. Pat married Charles "Chuck" Schweitzer on February 16, 1951 in Chatfield.

They lived in Biloxi, Miss. for a short while before moving to St. Charles. Pat worked for Whitewater Healthcare Center in St. Charles as a Nursing Assistant from 1967-1995.

She was affiliated with St. Charles United Methodist Church. Pat enjoyed country and western music, her collection of angel figurines, candlesnuffers and Christmas villages. Two of her favorite pastimes were playing bingo and reading. She also took pleasure in entertaining her family on the Fourth of July and wintering in Cherokee Village, Arkansas.

Survivors include her husband, Chuck; six children, Danny (Mary Jo), Gerald (Jacklyn) Kathy (Jay) Mollert, Janet (Marlan) Ellsworth, Rick, and Kyle (Tessa) all of St. Charles; twenty-one grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; her mother, Ethel Johnson of Douglas, WY.; two brothers, Art Johnson and Kenny Johnson, both of Douglas, WY; and two sisters, Jeanne Gieski of Rockford, Ill. and Vicki Brace of Poplar Grove, Ill.

Her father and a brother, Donald preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27 at Hoff Funeral Home - St. Charles Chapel with Rev. Sharon Johnson of St. Charles United Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call on the family from 4-8 p.m. Thursday and one hour before services Friday at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Hillside cemetery in St. Charles.

Volkman, Hubert Gerhardt

Hubert Gerhardt Volkman, 80, Lewiston, Minn., died Monday, July 23, 2001 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, Wis.

Hubert was born December 15, 1920 in Wiscoy Township of Winona County to Hubert William and Emma Mary (Nelson) Volkman. Hubert attended Ridgeway Schools. He and Hildegarde "Hilde" Semmen were married August 26, 1944. Hubert began working for Eldon and Emil Gremelsbach, in the livestock business, in 1945. In 1960 Hubert became a partner in E.E. Gremelsbach Livestock, Inc. He also farmed and did custom harvesting.

Hubert was a member of St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Lewiston. He loved to deer hunt and fish.

Survivors include his wife, Hilde; three sons, Gary (Patricia) of Utica, Minn., Bruce S. (Sharon) of Winona, and Mark (Dawn) of Winona; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; and eight brothers and sisters, Lilla Ford of Minnesota City, Minn., Elnora Jonsgaard of Utica, Ella Meyer of Rochester, Minn., Wilbert Volkman of Lewiston, Minn., Henry Volkman of Lewiston, Marcella Marin of Rushford, Minn., Melvin Volkman of Belvedere, Ill, and Roger Volkman of Winona.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Katie Volkman and seven brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church in Lewiston with Rev. Michael Lindeman officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoff Funeral Home's - Lewiston Chapel. They may also call one hour before services Thursday at the church.

Blilie, Rev. Philip O.

Rev. Philip O. Blilie, 89, of Rushford died Monday, March 25, 2002, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford. He was born on April 10, 1912, to Jacob and Mina (Scholl) Blilie, on the family farm near Canton, Minn. Phil graduated from Canton High School in 1930. He attended the Wisconsin Business University and graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in May of 1951. He graduated from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn. in May of 1954. In June of 1954 he married Norma Andersen. Pastor Phil began his pastoral ministry on August 1, 1954, in a four-point parish at Summit, South Dakota. In 1960 he moved to Oldham, South Dakota where he served the Oldham Lutheran Church. In 1971 he moved to rural Princeton, Minn. where he served the Glendoradoo-Good Shepherd Lutheran Parish. In 1980, Pastor Phil moved to Rushford, Minn., there he was part-time visitation pastor at Rushford Lutheran Church for a number of years. Pastor Phil is survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and one brother, Donald. The funeral service was on Thursday, March 28, at the Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial was in the Henrytown Lutheran cemetery in Henrytown, Minn. Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Rushford Chapel helped the family with arrangements.

DeVorak, Patrick John

Patrick John DeVorak born Jan. 14.1910 in Lake Nebagamon, Wisconsin.

Patrick was a WW11 vet. serving in Belgium, France and Germany as a mechanic and received a bronze star in 1945.

He was a mechanic in Winona, Minnesota until retirement.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Vivian DeVorak, wife Margie DeVorak, and a sister Ada Thomson.

He is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law: Larry and Jackie DeVorak of Florida and Ken Shasteen of Florida; 9 grandsons: Terry, Lon, Kim and Keith DeVorak of Minnesota; Rick and Mike DeVorak of California; Scott, David and Rick of Texas; 13 great-grandchildren; 6 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law -- Earl and Ruby Walters of Arkansas, Bob and Betty Summers of Tennessee; 1 brother-in-law Onis Summers of Arkansas, several nieces and nephews.

Services were March 29, 2002 at Heath Funeral Home in Paragould, Arkansas, with Rev. Royce Boling officiating.

Burial was at Memorial Gardens in Arkansas

Pall bearers were Terry, Lon, Kim, Keith DeVorak, Mike Berry and Richard Goldsmith.

Sorenson, Susan Kaye

On Wednesday, March 27, 2002 the Girl Scout Council of River Trails and the world of Girl Scouting lost a dear and dedicated friend, mentor and member of staff. Susan Kay Sorenson passed away in Rochester following surgery to repair a shoulder injury. She will be deeply missed and her loss will be profoundly felt throughout the Council.

She was born March 27, 1964. She started her life-long love of Girl Scouting as a girl with the Nyoda Girl Scout Council in Oakes, SD. She began her college career at Concordia College in St. Paul and completed her undergraduate work at Moorehead State University. She started her professional life as a reporter and sales representative for her local newspaper, the Oakes Times. In 1987 she renewed her commitment to Girl Scouting when she joined the staff of the Nyoda Girl Scout Council.

In 1994, Sue joined the Girl Scout Council of River Trails. Since that time her dedication to her work as Director of Training and her commitment to proudly spreading the good word of Girl Scouting, and its founder Juliette Gordon Low, have served as a loving foundation for thousands of Girl Scouts who have been a part of River Trails Council. Their blossoming succeses are an on-going tribute to Sue's life and work.

The staff and Board of Directors of the Girl Scout Council of River Trails wish to express our sympathy to the family and friends of Susan Kaye Sorenson. We share in your sadness and profound loss.

Services were Saturday, March 30 at 2:00 at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, 1105 12 St. S.E.

Followed by an Open House at the Girl Scout Council of River Trails, 4228 Eighth St, SW, Rochester.

Bambenek, Evelyn M.

Evelyn Marie Bambenek, 71, of Winona, died Thursday, March 28, 2002 at St. Anne Hospice.

Evelyn was the youngest of 11 children born to John and Elizabeth Voelker in Winona on June 23, 1930. She grew up in West Burns Valley and attended schools in Winona. She married Joseph R. Bambenek on June 24, 1950. They celebrated their 50th anniversary a year ago.

She worked almost 30 years and retired from Hal Leonard Music Company of Winona.

Evelyn was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Winona Gardening Club, Harvest House, the Winona County Old Settlers, Birthright and MCCL. She volunteered at St. Anne Hospice and helped with the Winona County Historical Society Victorian Fair.

Evelyn enjoyed gardening, especially decorative corns, gourds and pumpkins, working alongside her husband, Joe and son, Bob in their produce business "The Pumpkin Palace." She was a talented cook, baker and bowler. As a teenager she sang with the Johnson Band, a local group. On their 50th anniversary Evelyn and Joe served cake and ice cream to the residents of St. Anne Hospice. Despite a busy work and home life, Evelyn made time to care for her mother, and help the families of a brother and sister. Evelyn's greatest pride was her family and home. Her very beautiful smile, hello and thoughtful ways will forever be with us. We love you!

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Joseph; son, Robert of Winona; daughter, Linda (John) Miller of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; grandson, Joseph Miller; brother, Leo (Rosemary) Voelker of Winona; and sister, Ruth Buth of Mission, Tex.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Thomas, five brothers, Al, Jerome (Pat), George, Joseph and James, and two sisters, Phyllis and Kathryn.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at noon Tuesday, April 2, at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph L. Keefe officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery. Preliminary services will be at

Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home at 11:30 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, April 1 from 5-8 p.m. where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Casketbearers are Mark and Roger Bambenek, Joseph Miller, Matt Merchlewitz, Donald Bronk and David Voelker.

Memorials can be made to St. Anne Hospice or Birthright.

Evelyn is in heaven loving all the little children that need a mother.
