Chalus, Ruth Augusta

Ruth Augusta Chalus, 87, Winona, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001 at the Watkins Home, Winona.

Ruth was born August 17, 1913 in Providence, RI, the daughter of Barbara (Kramer) and Wayne Lloyd Carelton. She married Joseph Frank Chalus on April 15, 1944 at Old Bridge, NJ. They met while they were both active in the Civil Air Patrol in New Jersey. He died July 15, 1972.

Ruth was an active member of both Central United Methodist Church and Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Earlier in her life she was active as a Girl Scout leader and was involved with the YWCA.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Rhonda Chalus of West Des Moines, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a sister, Dorothy Steinmetz.

Funeral services were Saturday, April 14, at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Hurmence officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Don Curtin, Jim Anderson, George Boller, Adrian Sabotta, Mark Justin and Ben Miller.

Memorials may be directed to Central United Methodist Church, Winona.

Jensen, Nancy V.T.

Nancy V.T. Jensen, 73, of Winona, formerly of Minneapolis, died April 12, 2001 at the Watkins Home in Winona.

Nancy was born to Swedish immigrants on March 9, 1928 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Hilma and Martin Lunner. Nancy was united in marriage to Robert Jensen on June 25, 1948 in Minneapolis.

She received her CDA (Child Development Associate) license and taught and served as the director of the Winona Day Care Center at the vocational school.

She was a member of Central Lutheran Church, Winona where she was actively involved in quilting and needlepoint projects. Nancy enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughters, Vicki (Paul) Rader of Winona and Terry (Barry) Duellman of Austin, Minn.; a son, Paul (Heidi) Jensen of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Walda Nelson of Minneapolis, Minn.; five grandchildren, Timothy, Lindsey, Molly, Grace and Samuel; and two nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and a brother.

Services for Nancy will be on Monday, April 16 at 2 p.m. at Central Lutheran Church with Rev. Wade E. Davick officiating. Interment will be Wednesday, April 18 at Fort Snelling National cemetery in Minneapolis at 1 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to Central Lutheran Church Building Fund or to Central Lutheran Church Quilters.

Nord, Sister Marie

Sister Marie Nord, 55, a member of the Leadership Team of the Congregation of Our Lady of Lourdes of Rochester, Minn., died in a car accident on April 9, 2001, in Roswell, New Mexico.

Born Ann Marie Nord on July 2, 1945 in Wynnum, Australia, Sister Marie entered the Franciscan Congregation in 1963 from St. John Parish, Roswell, NM.

Sister Marie's ministry in the congregation began as a teacher of science in several schools. It was through that ministry that the seeds of a lifelong passion to call others to live peaceably were planted. Through her role as Social Justice Coordinator for the congregation she lived out this passion as a peace activist, paralegal assistant, living and ministering in various peace communities in Colorado Springs, Colo. and Albuquerque, NM, training and volunteering at Genesis Farm and directing ERDA Garden and Learning Center where she was ministering at the time of her death.

Sister Marie was active in leadership in her religious congregation, serving on various committees, and at the time of her death, serving as an elected member of the Congregational Leadership Team. Sister Marie was faithful to the prophets that came before her: She lived the passage from the prophet Micah. "This is what God asks of you -- that you do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God."

Sister Marie is survived by her Franciscan Community; by her mother, Anne Nord of Roswell, NM; by two brothers, Robert Nord of Farmington, NM and David Nord of Amarillo, Tex.; and by two sisters, Barbara Dickenson of Alto, NM and Beth Bolin of Roswell.

A Funeral Liturgy will be held at St. Peter's Church in Roswell on Tuesday April 17 at 10 a.m. On Thursday, April 19, there will be a Memorial Liturgy at 11 a.m., and a memorial prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Assisi Heights, Rochester.

Johnson, Elmer N.

Elmer N. Johnson, 87, of Rushford, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford. He was born on January 30, 1914, in Arendahl Township of Fillmore County to Hans and Ingeborg (Koljord) Johnson. Elmer's mother died when he was a young boy. He was then raised by his grandmother, Aaste Koljord. Elmer worked for area farmers for many years. He moved to Hungry Horse, Montana in the 1950s. Elmer married Hilda Thorp in 1958 in Montana. Elmer did construction work and was a fire fighter in Montana for many years. He moved back to the Peterson, Minn. area just a few years ago. Elmer was a member of North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro and the American Legion. His interests included gardening and fishing. Elmer is survived by many cousins: Esther, Cora, and Obert Johnson of Peterson, Norman (Helen) Johnson of Winona, Orley (Eileen) Koljord and Justin Johnson of Lanesboro, and Robert (Janet) Koljord of LaCrescent. He was preceded in death by his wife. The funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at the North Prairie Lutheran Church with the Rev. Victor Jortack officiating. The burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Cook Rushford Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Schmidtknecht, Arline Wilma

Arline Wilma Schmidtknecht, 86, of Fountain City, Wis., died Monday, January 14, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Arline was born on March 8, 1915, in Cream, Wis., to Charles and Sara (Loesel) Jahn. On October 25, 1933 she married Louie F. Schmidtknecht at Waumandee, Wis., and they were blessed with five children. He preceded her in death on January 9, 1979.

She retired from Lake Center, Winona. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Fountain City and a Harvest House member.

Arline lived in Fountain City most of her life and was a resident of Sauer Memorial Home, Winona for the past two years due to her health. She loved her family and enjoyed all of her grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. She enjoyed the activities at the home and enjoyed cards and bingo. She looked forward to going to play bingo with her daughter, Judy. Her greatest talent was her needlework, all of which her children and grandchildren have a masterpiece of.

She is survived by two daughters, Judy Franzwa of Minnesota City, Minn. and LuAnn (Devon) Ammann of Arcadia, Wis.; a son, David (Joy) Schmidtknecht of Fountain City; a brother, Allen (Carol) Jahn of Alma, Wis.; two daughters-in-law, Marie Schmidtknecht of LaCrosse, Wis., and Eileen Schmidtknecht of Arlington, Tex.; fifteen grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Louie, two sons, Allen and Gerald, one sister, Marjorie Jahn, one brother, Stanley Jahn, a daughter-in-law, Sandi Schmidtknecht; a son-in-law, Edward Franzwa, and two grandchildren, Scot Ammann and Sandra Ammann.

Memorial services will be Thursday, January 17 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fountain City, with Rev. Douglas Charles Robertson officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface cemetery, Waumandee, Wis.

Friends may call at the church on Thursday from 10-11 a.m.

Honorary casketbearers will be her grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are being completed by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Fountain City, Wis.

Keith, Sheila A.

Sheila A. Keith, 44, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and formerly of Rushford, Minn. was called home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 11, 2002, at the Deaconess Hospital in Oklahoma City. Sheila was born on September 1, 1957, in Newport News, Virginia. She was raised in Newport News until age 10 when she moved with her family to Hawaii. She and her family moved to Connecticut when she was a teenager. In the mid 1980's Sheila moved to Rushford, Minnesota. She had worked at the D.N.R. office in Rochester as a receptionist and was currently a student at the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City. Sheila was married and later divorced. She was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Hart, Minnesota where she enjoyed teaching the young children in Sunday school, as well as being in the church choir and was chairperson of the 125th anniversary celebration. Sheila's interests included reading, music and crafts. Sheila is survived by her parents John and Barbara "Glenda" Erdmann of Rushford, Minn.; one brother William (Julie) Chapman; grandmothers: Barbara Jackson-Davis and Esther Erdmann; grandparents: William Floyd and Dina Green; one nephew and one great-nephew; and many aunts, uncles and cousin. She was preceded in death by her great-grandparents: William Harley and Clifford Walker, and Willie and Effie Green; and Grandfathers: Carlton Jackson and Elmer Erdmann. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hart, Minnesota with the Rev. Frederick Buth officiating. Friends may call at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Rushford Chapel from 4:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, and also one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Kessler, Mildred Rose

Mildred Rose Kessler, 88, of Lewiston, Minn., died Saturday, January 12, 2002 at the Lewiston Villa.

Mildred was born to Harry and Elsie (Summers) Lewis on February 24, 1913 in Lewiston and attended Lewiston schools. She and Lloyd Russell Mulholland married . He later died. Mildred then married Russell Kessler and he survives.

She worked as a cook at the Lewiston Elementary School, and at the White Knight Bar and Restaurant.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ/Evangelical Church in America of Lewiston, where she had been active in church activities. Mildred loved gardening and flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Russell; two sons, Russell (Kathleen) Mulholland of Spring Valley, and Ryan (Ruth) Kessler of Glenwood; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Don, Lawrence and Shorty, and a sister, Dorothy Mae.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 15 at St. Paul's UCC/ELCA in Lewiston with Rev. Roy Rogers officiating. Burial was in Lewiston Public cemetery.

Hoff Funeral Home's - Lewiston Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.

Martin, Mary Lou

Mary Lou Martin, 81, of Cochrane, Wis., passed away Saturday, January 12, 2002 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.

Mary Lou was born to Oscar and Marie Maes in Chicago, Ill. on December 9, 1920. She spent her childhood and high school years in Oconto, Wis. After graduation, Mary Lou became a Navy WAVE recruiter, traveling throughout the Midwest. She met Jay W. Martin and on September 21, 1945 they were married .

Always the perfect lady, she loved gardening, tending her flowers with the same gentle love she showed friends and family. She shared her talents as a member of the Winona Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and also was a faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Alma. "Nana Dee Dee, " as she was so adoringly called by her grandchildren, was the essence of gentleness, kindness, and caring.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 56 years, Jay Martin; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Lynn Martin; granddaughters, Michele (Troy) Lietha and Kristine Martin; grandson, Brian (Becky) Martin; great-grandson, Dillon Lietha; and three sisters, Peg Michelson, Pat Hassler and Sally Jensen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a brother.

A Memorial Mass of Thanksgiving for the gift of her life was held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Alma on Tuesday, January 15, with Father John Steiner officiating. Burial was in the Buffalo City cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Bill Bruegger, Glenn Foegen, Gene Lorenz, Don Leaf, Duane Fakler, and Scott Biesanz.

Roarig, Frieda L. "Fritzie"

Frieda L. "Fritzie" Roarig, 81, of LaCrosse, Wis., died Sunday, January 13, 2002 at the Hillview Health Care Center.

Funeral services were Tuesday, January 15, at Dickinson Family Funeral Home with Rev. Ted Dewald of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.
