Minnie Huisman, 98
Luverne, Minn.
September 29, 2003

Minnie Huisman, 98, of Luverne, Minn., died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Center, Luverne.

Services were Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, Luverne, with interment in Ebenezer Presbyterian Stateline Church cemetery, rural Ellsworth, Minn.

Minnie Boelman was born Sept. 5, 1905, at Ackley, the daughter of Rudolph and Anna (Hagenah) Boelman. When she was 3, the family moved to Rock County, Minn. After her education, she was a housekeeper in Rock Rapids.

On June 13, 1929, she married Fred "Shorty" Huisman. They farmed over 40 years in Rock County, Minn., and Lyon County. She and her husband were also caretakers of the Ebenezer Presbyterian (Stateline) Church cemetery.

Her husband died July 25, 1979. In October 1979, she moved from their farm near Lester to Rosewood Heights Apartments in Rock Rapids. In March 2001, she moved to Premier Estates in Rock Rapids and in November 2001, she became a resident of Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne, Minn.

Survivors include one son, Karon of Madison, Wis.; two daughters, Mrs. Orland (Lois) Ahrendt of Luverne and Mrs. Terry (Marge) Bjornsen of Marion; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; one half-brother and one stepsister.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one daughter, Charlotte Meester; great-granddaughter, Nancy Hagen; one brother; three sisters; two half-brothers; two half-sisters; five stepbrothers and two stepsisters.

Susie Kelderman, 78
Hills, Minn.
September 30, 2003

Susie Kelderman, 78, of Hills, Minn., died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Tuff Memorial Home, Hills.

Services were Friday at American Reformed Church, Luverne, Minn., with interment in Maplewood cemetery.

Susie Smidstra was born Dec. 5, 1924, at Edna, the daughter of Charles and Reka (Kracht) Smidstra. She grew up and attended country school in the Rock Rapids area.

On Aug. 15, 1946, she married Henry Kelderman. They lived in Doon until moving to farm in the Canton, S.D., area in 1952. They moved to the Hardwick, Minn., area in 1954. In 1956, they moved to a farm near Luverne, Minn.

Her husband died in June 1962. She cleaned homes and businesses and worked for Luverne Trucking. She moved to Tuff Memorial Home in 2000.

Survivors include three sons, Henry "Butch" of Hills, Minn., Roger of Omaha, Neb., and Dave of Moose Lake, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Shirley) Johnson of Hills; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert of Rock Rapids and Ben of Luverne, and one sister, Mrs. Joe (Wilma) Jeffers of Luverne.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, Bert, and two sisters, Jennie Vander Weerd and Jessie Wiersma.

Marie Hensch, 100
Luverne, Minn.
October 2, 2003

Marie Hensch, 100, of Luverne, Minn., died Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Center, Luverne.

Services were Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Boyden, with interment in the church cemetery.

Marie Hundt was born July 16, 1903, near George, the daughter of Peter and Anna (Winter) Hundt. She attended country school through the eighth grade then continued her education at St. John Parochial School. She graduated from Wartburg Normal College in Waverly in 1925. She taught in a Wheeler Township, Lyon County, country school from 1925-1935, then at St. John Lutheran School five years.

On June 9, 1940, she married Walter Hensch near Boyden. For the next two years, they farmed near Hartley, then farmed in the Boyden and Hull area until their retirement. In 1984, they moved to Rock Rapids. During her retirement, she translated German records of St. John Lutheran Church of Boyden, St. Paul Lutheran Church of Hull, St. Paul Lutheran Church of Sheldon, Hope Reformed Church of George and First Baptist Church of George.

Her husband died in 1988. In 1998, she moved to the Oaks in Luverne. In 2001, she moved to Tuff Village in Hills. In September 2003, she became a resident of Mary Jane Brown Good Samaritan Center in Luverne.

At St. John Lutheran Church near Boyden, she served as Sunday School superintendent and was active in Dorcas Society.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Walter (Ardith) Tofteland of Luverne and Mrs. Duane (Ruth) Auckland of Des Moines; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant daughter, Margaret; one brother, Henry, and one sister, Elsie Kruse.

Elmer Bartels, 72
Motley, Minn.
October 3, 2003

Elmer Bartels, 72, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, at his home in Motley, Minn.

Services were Monday at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church, rural George, with interment in the church cemetery.

Mr. Bartels was born Oct. 31, 1930, in George, the son of Jelte and Hattie (Thiele) Bartels. He grew up in George and attended George Public Schools, graduating from high school in 1950. He served in the navy from October 1950-Aug. 18, 1954.

On April 19, 1955, he married Mina Willemssen at George. They lived in West Fargo, N.D., where he worked for Jardine Bridge Co. He later attended trade school in Moorhead, graduating in auto body repair. He then worked for W.W. Wallwork automobile dealership in Fargo, N.D. He served in the army from March 31, 1961-March 20, 1964. The family moved to Richfield, Minn., in 1964 where he worked as foreman at Nordicware 11 years. In June 1975, the couple purchased a general store in Leader, Minn. He later worked as a logger and as a substitute rural mail carrier. In 1986, the couple moved to rural Kasson, Minn., where he worked as a welder at McNeillus Truck Manufacturing in Dodge Center, Minn. He retired May 3, 1996, and the couple moved to an acreage near Leader.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Craig of Staples, Minn.; two daughters, Mrs. Mac (Carla) McKimmy of Maple Grove, Minn., and Mrs. Kelly (Cinda) Boldan of Willmar, Minn.; four grandchildren; two stepgranddaughters; one great-grandson; one stepgreat-grandson; one brother, Harry of Spokane, Wash., and four sisters, Sena Van Briesen and Elizabeth Klaahsen, both of George, Mrs. Warren (Jennie) Heyer of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mrs. Don (Mae) Jacoy of Vancouver, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Helena Karsten, and four brothers, Henry, Andrew, Harm and Jake, and one stepgrandson.

William Mulder

William Mulder, 85, of Ellsworth, Minn., died Monday, Oct. 14, 2002, at Park View Manor.

Services were Saturday at Zion Presbyterian Church, Ellsworth, with interment in Grand Prairie cemetery.

Mr. Mulder was born Jan. 19, 1917, near Sibley, the son of William B. and Ida (Moet) Mulder. He grew up in Osceola County and near Little Rock before moving to near Ellsworth where he completed his education.

On Oct. 21, 1941, he married Catherine Klooster at Ellsworth. They farmed near Ellsworth and Magnolia, Minn. He was also a cattle trader and shipper. They retired from farming in 1979 and moved into Ellsworth.

His wife died Dec. 14, 1995. He became a resident of Park View Manor in 1997.

Survivors include one son, Leroy of Ellsworth; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one sister, Anna May Hector of Ellsworth.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one son, Dallas.

Raymond Klaassen, 83
Luverne, Minn.
November 23, 2003

Raymond Klaassen, 83, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at Minnesota Veterans Home, Luverne.

Services were Friday at Salem Reformed Church, Little Rock, with interment in Pleasant View cemetery.

Mr. Klaassen was born May 25, 1920, in George, the son of John and Edith (Klaassen) Klaassen. He attended school in George and served in the army during World War II.

On Oct. 16, 1947, he married Elloise Larson in Little Rock. They farmed near Ellsworth, Minn., until 2001 when they moved to Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne.

At Salem Reformed Church, he taught Sunday School and catechism several years.

Survivors include three sons, David of Marquette, Kan., Daniel of Marion and Donald of Ellsworth; three daughters, Mrs. Roger (Dorothy) Shepherd of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mrs. Frank (Jane) Bernstein of Palo Alto, Calif., and Joan Klaassen of Belmont, Calif.; 21 grandchildren; four brothers, Harmon of Worthington, Minn., Alfred of Ellsworth, John of Sioux Falls and Ronald of California, and five sisters, Helena Sprock and Alma DeBuhr, both of Rock Rapids, Mrs. Bert (Ruth) Van Westen of Luverne and Mrs. Ubbe (Erma) Wagenaar of Adrian, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two grandsons, Benjamin and Nathaniel; one brother, Paul, and one sister, Esther Klinkenborg.
