Anne Edwardson

Anne Edwardson, 98, Battle Lake, formerly of Badger, Minn., died March 26, 2004, at the Battle Lake Good Samaritan Care Center.

She was born June 3, 1905, in Ross, Minn., to Andrew and Mary (Moen) Knutson. She attended school at Ross and was baptized and confirmed in Melum Lutheran Church.

She married Alfred Edwardson on June 28, 1928. They lived in Roseau and the Badger area during their married life. Alfred died in April 1985, and Anne moved to Battle Lake in 1989. She moved into the Good Samaritan Center in 1997.

She enjoyed gardening, quilting, needlework and was well-known for her cheerfulness and generous hospitality. She was an active member of Rose Free Lutheran Church and was active in her church circle.

She is survived by two daughter, Dolores Anderson, Escondido, Calif., and Phyllis (Wilbur) Still of Battle Lake; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-granddaughter; a special niece, Mary Lou Liddy; and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by here parents; husband; five sisters; and two brothers.

Visitation: Thursday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with a 7:30 prayer service at the funeral chapel in Roseau

Service: Friday at 1:30 p.m. at Rose Free Lutheran Church of Roseau

Burial: Moe-Rose cemetery

Oliver Aune

Oliver Edward Aune, 98, Fergus Falls, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004, at the Broen Memorial Home of Fergus Falls.

He was born Aug. 16, 1905, in Sverdrup Township, Otter Tail County, to Olaf and Inga (Bjornaas) Aune. He was baptized in his parent's home and confirmed at Aurdal Lutheran Church of rural Underwood. He attended rural school District No. 12 in Aurdal Township.

After schooling, he was a lifetime farmer in Aurdal and Sverdrup Townships. He was a lifetime member of Otter Tail County Historical Society and Sons of Norway. He was also a member of Aurdal Lutheran Church, rural Underwood, served as Sverdrup Township clerk for eight years and was a director of the Farmers Mercantile of Underwood. His hobbies included reading, archeology, and collecting prehistoric rocks, Indian artifacts and various etchings.

He is survived by several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Albert and Clarence; and two sisters, Ella and Alma Aune.

Visitation: Thursday at 2 to 4 p.m. at Olson Funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Aurdal Lutheran Church, rural Underwood

Interment: Aurdal Lutheran cemetery, rural Underwood

Eugene Leitch

Eugene Landsford Leitch, 75, Underwood, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, March 29, 2004, at the Lake Region Hospital of Fergus Falls.

He was born on the family farm in Maine Township, Otter Tail County, on April 18, 1928, to Russell and Esther Leitch. A brother, Dennis, and a sister, Patricia, completed their family.

He grew up on a farm near Underwood, was confirmed into the Christian faith at Rindal Lutheran Church and graduated from Underwood High School in 1947.

On Oct. 1, 1948, he married his lifetime companion, Minerva "Mike" Grimstad, at First English Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls, with Rev. C.K. Preus officiating. That same month Gene began working at the Fergus Falls State Hospital and was employed there for 42 years before retiring on May 10, 1990. He also worked many part-time jobs during his lifetime including at Cities Service, Tysver Landscaping, Pure Station and Montgomery Ward. He sometimes worked two to three jobs at a time, allowing "Mike" to stay home with their five children: Beth, Brad, Barry, Ben and Brady. He instilled a tremendous work ethic in his children.

Gene and "Mike" and their family made their home in Fergus Falls until 1990 when they moved to Underwood and purchased a new home.

During Gene's working years, he had little time for recreation but enjoyed summer camping vacations with his family and friends and owned a series of motor homes and other camping equipment. Following his retirement, he and "Mike" purchased a mobile home in Edinburgh, TX, and became "Winter Texans" for ten years until his eyesight began to fail and he had to give up driving. He continued to do limited traveling with "Mike" behind the wheel.

For a number of years, they bowled in a couples league. He was a member of Minnesota State Retirees and Eagles Aerie 2339. He especially enjoyed doing things with his family and going to coffee with his good friends, Jerry Kragness and Frank Dowzak.

Keeping him in their very fondest memories are his loving wife of 55 years, Minerva of Underwood; his mother, Esther Leitch of Fergus Falls; one daughter, Elizabeth (Roy) Hulm, of Bison, S.D.; four sons, Bradford (Candace) Leitch and Barritt (Trish) Leitch, all of Fergus Falls, Bennett Leitch, Underwood, and Braden (Peggy) of Rochester; his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Jason Beld, Taylor and Tanner; Kendra (Roger) Deibert, Tyler and Austin, Ryan (Katie) Beld and Kaeleigh Amber (David) Jensen, Jaleigh and Colten; Jared (Amber) Beld, Taten, Sydne and Symone; Kyle and Kirk Hulm; B.K. (Julie) Leitch and Bret; Casey Leitch (fiance Jay Hoglin); Nicolas Leitch; Bethany Leitch; and Eric Nordgren; step-grandchildren, Chris Buttke and Matthew; and Darci Buttke; one brother, Dennis Leitch, of Park Rapids; one sister, Patricia (Andy) Formo of Fergus Falls; his Uncle Andy (Carol) Leitch of Underwood; aunts, Esther Leitch, Battle Lake, and Marian Shaffer of Wis.; brothers-in-law, Manny (Judy) Grimstad, Bellevue, Neb., Jerry (Debbie) Grimstad, Rice, Minn., and Milo Severson of Fergus Falls; numerous nephews and nieces; and the family Pomeranian, Jordyn.

He was preceded in death by his father, Russell Leitch, who died in 2002; his in-laws, Selvin and Mabel Grimstad; one son-in-law, Kenneth Beld; a brother-in-law, Eugene Currier; a sister-in-law, Darnella Severson; and two nephews, Brian Grimstad and Donovan Severson.

Visitation: Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. public prayer service at Olson Funeral Home and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Fergus Falls

Jerry Neseth

Jerry Neseth, 63, Perham, died March 31, 2004, at his home. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Lutheran Church of Perham with Rev. Karin Moberg officiating.

Visitation will be Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, and will resume at church one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Calvary Memorial cemetery of Perham.

Verna Bouton

Verna Bouton, 79, died March 31, 2004, at Viking Manor Nursing Home with four of her children in attendance.

Verna Gudren Hovland was born to Olga and Melvin Hovland at home near Elizabeth on Oct. 7, 1924.

She attended grade school at District 111 near Carlisle, Minn. In 1934 her family moved to Fergus Falls. She graduated from the Underwood High School in 1942.

In the fall of 1942, she started telegraphy school in Jamestown, N.D. In six months, she graduated and worked in Syre, Minn. It was there that she met her future husband, Chester.

They were married Dec. 15, 1945, in Moorhead, made their home in the rural Ulen area and began farming and raised a family of seven children. Verna and Chester were members of Atlanta Lutheran Church. She was very active in the Ladies Aid and was instrumental is formulating the Atlanta cemetery Association. She believed in her Lord and served Him faithfully. During the early 70s, she returned to night school (while working full time at American Crystal Sugar) to receive her Certified Med Aid certificate. She began working at the local nursing homes until she retired in 1980.

Chester and Verna began traveling to all the children's homes and visiting the grand children. During this time, Verna continued volunteering for her church and joined several ladies groups.

In 1982, they retired from farming and began a trucking business. She enjoyed the new challenge and became Chester's book keeper. To keep busy while Chester was trucking, she continued to be involved with the church and enjoyed her grandchildren. Some of them stayed the entire summer at the farm with Grandma and Grandpa.

After Chester died in 1992, she kept busy. Spending some of the winters in warmer climate, she always yearned for the farm. She enjoyed her flowers and invited ladies over for coffee, but mostly she enjoyed her home. Recently, she moved into Ulen for the winters but returned to her farm weekly. Her heart was still there.

She moved into the Viking Manor Nursing home in 2002.

She is survived by children and spouses, who are: Curtis Bouton of Minneapolis; Norma (Darrell) McNamara of Overland Park, Kan.; James and Katie Bouton of Collierville, Tenn.; Brenda (Dale) B. L. Cossette of Moorhead; Bryan Bouton of Chico, Calif.; Mary Bouton of Fergus Falls; and Catherine (Dennis) Leno of Moorhead.

She was the proud grandmother of: Darren, Rachel and Rebecca Bouton (children of Curtis); Gretchen and Shawn Bouton (children of James); Marcinna, Anthony and Jaima Rose Bouton (children of Bryan); and Dexter Peters (child of Catherine Leno). She also had one great-grandchild, Alec (child of Shawn Bouton).

She is also survived by five siblings: Clarice (Harold) Nielson of Fergus Falls; Ruth (Marion) Bouton of Phoenix, Ariz.; Howard and Jean Hovland of Dalton; Dorothy (Herbert) Christopherson of Hoffmann; and Mrs. Marie (Jim) McKinney of Phoenix, Ariz. She will also be remembered by many nephews and nieces.

Visitation: Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a prayer service to follow at 7 p.m.

Service: Saturday at 11 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church of Hitterdal, Minn.

Burial: Atlanta Lutheran Church, east of Ulen, Minn., following memorial service

Funeral Home: Anderson Funeral Home of Twin Valley, Minn.

Ada Rust

Ada Rust, 83, Richville, died April 3, 2004, at Perham Memorial Home. Memorial services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Rod Tornquiest officiating.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Schoeneberg Funeral Home, Perham, and will resume one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Richville Village of Richville.

Rusty Thom

Rusty S. Thom, 48, died Friday, April 2, 2004, at St. Anne of Winona in Winona, Minn.

He was born July 15, 1955, in Ft. Riley, Kan., to David and Jeanette (Sem) Thom. He was raised in Underwood and graduated from Underwood High School in 1973. He then attended Alexandria Technical School for two years following his graduation from high school.

Winona was his home for the past 17 years. There he owned and operated the Baseball Shop. He was also a self-employed painter and offered lawn work and snow removal for several people. He was a member of Cornerstone Community Church of Winona. He enjoyed his vast number of friends and following sports, especially the MN Twins and Vikings. He will be remembered for his ability to tell you the statistics of all the players.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Jeanette (Don) Hoppes of Roca, Neb.; brother, Ronald (Julie) Thom of Underwood; sister, Renda (Richard) Rappa of Wyoming, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Jessica (Louis) Karsnia, Fergus Falls, Jared and Erik Thom, Underwood, Nicole Thom, St. Paul, Joseph, Sofia and Hunter Rappa of Wyoming, Minn.; and great nephew, Zander Karsnia of Fergus Falls.

He was preceded in death by his father, David.

Service: 11 a.m. Monday at Cornerstone Community Church, Winona, and Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Tingvold Lutheran Church of Underwood

Burial: Tingvold Church cemetery
