John Sullivan
John J. Sullivan, 93, boxer, realtor, construction company owner, farmer, breeder and owner of thoroughbred horses, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Friday morning from complications from multiple strokes and congestive heart failure at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls. Only hours before he died, he threw his famous one-two boxing punch, followed by laughter.
He was born June 30, 1910, in Eden Valley, Minn., to Tim and Margaret Sullivan. His father died of tuberculosis when he was eight years old. John and his brother, Dan, supported the family by riding the rails, working harvests in the Dakotas and sending money back home.
The family moved to St. Paul. He became a welterweight boxer, going by John L., instead of John J., using his confirmation name of Lawrence. He won all his championship title matches.
He married
Blanche Mazur on July 24, 1934, at St. Casimir's Church. They had four children. During this time he worked at Cardozas as a furniture salesman.
During World War II, times were difficult and he joined the Army. His boxing background gave him the experience to train soldiers in hand-to-hand combat and physical hardening. After the Army he joined Les Igo in real estate.
In 1949 he bought his farm on Dead Lake and became a cattle rancher. Plummeting beef prices forced him to return to the Twin Cities. Sullivan Realty was a success and was followed by the natural transition in Sullivan Construction. On December 6, 1971, he married
Carol Fox. They moved back to the farm, and he adopted Carol's three children. They had two daughters from this marriage, and he continued to farm. His interest in race horses developed when his youngest daughters inspired him in show horses. That evolved into the passion for breeding and racing thoroughbreds.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Sullivan; children: Patricia Sullivan, Nancy Sullivan,
Michael Sullivan, Tim Sullivan, Dawn Sullivan Holm, Johanna Sullivan, Brett Sullivan and Kelly Sullivan McKusick; 16 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
