Ethel Bystol

Ethel Bystol (Johnson), 89, formerly of Ashby, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Good Samaritan Center of Battle Lake.

She was born March 17, 1915, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Ted and Cecelia (Peterson) Johnson. The family moved to Underwood and later to rural Dalton. She was a confirmed and a life-time member of Kvam Lutheran Church of Dalton. She attended country school in St. Olaf Township.

On April 8, 1937, she married Lauritz Bystol at the parsonage of Kvam Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on his family farm until 1998, when they became residents of the Mill Street Residence in Fergus Falls. In late November of 2000, she moved into the Good Samaritan Center of Battle Lake.

She was an active member of her church; she enjoyed sewing, gardening, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lauritz, who died July 7, 2000; brother; sisters; and one grandson, Kenneth.

She is survived by her son, Loren (Carol) Bystol of Lewes, Del.; two daughters, Loretta (John Jr.) Havlik of Chanhassen, Minn., and Carol (Harlan) Selander of Cologne, Minn.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Malva Iverson of Dalton. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 1 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at Kvam Lutheran Church of Dalton

Helen Anderson

Helen Anderson, 94, of Evansville died Sunday at Crestview Manor Nursing Home of Evansville. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Christina Lake Lutheran Church of rural Evansville with Rev. Carl Ulrich officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Evansville and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Evansville is in charge of arrangements.

Helene Mix

Helene Mix, 89, of St. Paul Health East Care Center, formerly of Fergus Falls, died June 20, 2004, in St. Paul.

She was born May 15, 1914, in Minnewaukan, N.D., to Hans Andreas P. and Helene Emilie (Hansen) Ronhovde. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1932 and, in 1938, graduated from Mankato State College as a teacher.

On Sept. 7, 1940, she married Virgil Stanley Mix in Jackson, Minn. Over the years, she taught country school in the Jackson, Minn., area, was an aide at Jackson Nursing Home and from 1974 to 1983 worked as a secretary to the Assessor's Office in Wadena County.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Amor, and its ladies aide. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, fishing, and was a wonderful wife and mother.

She is survived by two sons, Stephan H. Mix of Houston, Tex., and Daniel C. Mix of Navasota, Tex.; daughter, Ruth Mix Peterson of St. Paul; two sisters, Ruth Eklof of St. Peter, Minnesota; and Aslaug Flatgaard of Montevideo, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Violet Ronhovde of Little Canada, Minnesota; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surviving are nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death were her parents; her husband, Virgil; one son, David S. Mix; and two brothers, Peter Ronhovde and Hans Ronhovde.

Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 1 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church of Amor

Clergy: Rev. James Gronbeck

Alene Palmquist

Alene "Tena" Palmquist, 91, of Melby died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at Crestview Manor Nursing Home of Evansville.

She was born April 12, 1913 in Skogmo, N.D., to Ole and Anna (Skogmo) Bardahl. She was baptized in North Dakota. She was raised in Erdahl, Minn., and confirmed at the Erdahl Lutheran Church.

She spent many years working in the food service industry. She worked at Skogmo's in Chippewa Falls, Wis., and then at the Skogmo Caf/ in Fergus Falls. On July 31, 1947, she married Lyle Palmquist in Barrett, Minn. Together they owned and operated the Standard Caf/ in Ashby. After they sold the caf/, they moved to Minneapolis where Tena was employed by Arthur's Restaurant in Northeast Minneapolis. The couple then retired to Melby where they became active members of the Christina Lake Lutheran Church.

Cooking and gardening were two of her favorite pastimes, but mostly she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially when she could ply them with coffee and treats.

She is survived by her sister, Hazel Dix, of Chanhassen, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Bardahl of Titusville, Fla., and Viola Behling of Minneapolis; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by parents, Ole and Anna Bardahl; her husband, Lyle; brothers, Edwin and Harold Bardahl; sisters, Agnes Kjelstrup and Synnova Alstead; and a nephew, Richard Alstead.

Visitation: Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Ashby and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christina Lake Lutheran Church, rural Evansville

Carl Silbernagel

Carl P. Silbernagel, 96, of Tavares, Fla., died June 20, 2004.

He was born Nov. 20, 1907, in Perham, and moved to Central Florida from Chicago, Ill., in 1998. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Cicero, Ill., and the Republican Club.

He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Helen Silbernagel, of Eustis, Fla.; grandsons: Bruce Silbernagel of Leesburg, Fla., Brian Silbernagel of Taveres, Fla., and Brent Silbernagel of Eustis, Fla.; and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation: Thursday, June 24, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home

Service: 11 a.m. Friday, Immanuel Lutheran cemetery of Dent

Hannah Borowski

Hannah Rochele Borowski, 14 months, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Children's Hospital of St. Paul.

She was born May 15, 2003, in Fargo, to Heather Nicole Borowski and Jonathan Matthew Rogness. She was baptized May 27, 2003, at MeritCare Hospital by Rev. Matthew Rogness.

She is survived by her parents, Heather Borowski and Jon Rogness; grandparents, Dr. Wesley and Sheila Borowski and Rev. Matthew and Judy Rogness; aunts and uncles, Emily, Matthew and Timothy Borowski and Andrea and Jeremy Knick; cousins, Jaxon and Jonah Knick; great-grandparents, Roger and Kay Borowski, Richard and Agnes Rogness, Morris and Lorraine Vold and Dennis and Patricia Wodele; and great-great grandparents, Lila Manor, Bernice Strand and Catherine Wodele.

She was preceded in death by great-great grandparents, Erwin and Erma Borowski, Lenard and Emma Huss, Edward and Kristina Lomeland, Lyman Manor, Oscar and Lillian Olson, Henry and Luella Rogness, Harold Strand, Hans and Bertha Vold and Ralph Wodele.

Visitation: Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 3 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls

Philip Burseth

Philip Gustav Burseth, 89, Dane Prairie Township, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at his home.

He was born April 22, 1915, to Peter and Karen (Ustmo) Burseth. He was born on the farm and lived there his entire life, with the exception of the last 20 winters that he spent in Texas. He attended School District 43 and one year of Morris Agricultural School.

He farmed his entire life and was married to Lucille Balgaard June 3, 1937, at the parsonage in Dalton with Rev. Bliksta officiating. The couple had one son, Philip Alan.

He was involved in many organizations: Chamber of Commerce, Fair Association, of which he became president, Farm Bureau, both on county and state levels, also the Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Board. He was also a member of Swan Lake Lutheran Church, where he served as secretary for 25 years. He served on the Northern Minnesota District for the ALC for a number of years. He enjoyed singing and was a member of the Orpheon Chorus and a charter member of the Lake County Barbershoppers and the Magic Valley Men of A Chord in McAllen, Texas. In 1972, they were given the Valley Farmers and Homemaker Award in Crookston, and in 1990 they were given an Honorary Life Membership by the Farm Bureau Federation in Minneapolis.

He enjoyed traveling and traveled through nearly every state in the union, including Hawaii twice, nearly every providence in Canada, Mexico and four trips to Norway to visit his ancestral origins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Dane Prairie; son, Alan (Sheila) Burseth of Fairfield, Calif.; a granddaughter, Teresa (Michael) Hoeper; two great-grandchildren, Emily and Devin Hoeper; one brother, Bennie (Elaine) Burseth of Colorado, and one sister, Borghild "Connie" (Balmor) Taylor of Florida. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Memorials are preferred to Swan Lake cemetery Association.

Visitation: Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church

Service: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Swan Lake Lutheran Church, rural Fergus Falls

Clergy: Rev. Charles Ewan and Pastor Ralph Holte

Burial: Swan Lake Lutheran Church cemetery
