John A. Patton
John A. Patton, 85, of Calvary Road passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born Sept. 9, 1915, in St. Joseph, Mo., to John A. and Luella (Payne) Patton Sr. John graduated from Denfeld High School in 1934. He married Elsie Catherine Lohi June 9, 1937, in Duluth. John retired from Superwood as a welder and also worked for Industrial Welders, Chicago Northwestern Railroad and was owner of Patton Donkey Ball Co. He was a member of the Ionic Lodge 186, Scottish Rite 32nd Degree-Valley of Duluth, AAD Temple of the Shrine, Moose Lodge 302, the Owls Club and American Legion Post 28.

John was preceded in death by his wife; children Carol, Corrine and infant twins; sisters Melva and Dorothy; a brother, Ralph; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

He is survived by daughters Claudia (Thyrone) Third of Newkirk, Okla., and Cindy (Larry) Wilmot of Wesley Chapels, Fla.; a sister, Margie Harrington of Topeka, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth. Service 1 p.m. Monday in Lake Avenue Masonic Temple, 4 W. Second St., Duluth, John Tuttle officiating. Burial of cremated remains at a later date in Fort Snelling cemetery. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Conrad "Mack" McCormack Fredin
Attorney, served on civic boards

Conrad "Mack" McCormack Fredin, 79, of London Road, formerly of East Fourth Street and Skywood Lane, a longtime Duluth attorney and a member of several boards and commissions, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in Lakeside Manor.
He was born in Hibbing on June 15, 1922, to David and Laura (McCormack) Fredin Sr. Mack had resided in Duluth since his childhood. He attended Holy Rosary Elementary School and Duluth Cathedral High School. He briefly attended the University of Minnesota Duluth, then called Duluth State Teachers College. He also attended St. Thomas College in St. Paul. He graduated from Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. Mack married Harriet Starin on July 26, 1942, in Duluth.

He was a captain in the Army during World War II, serving with the 11th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group. He landed in the eighth assault wave at Utah Beach at 7: 15 a.m. on D-Day.

In 1948, Mack received his law degree from the University of Minnesota and served on the Editorial Board of the Minnesota Law Review. He practiced law in Duluth for all of his professional life. He started with the firm Butchart and Jenswold, later Butchart and Fredin. He joined Reavill, Neimeyer, Johnson, Fredin and Killen in 1967, later Johnson, Fredin, Killen, Thibodeau & Seiler. He then was with the Harper Eaton firm, after which he had his own office for several years.

He was a member of the Duluth Civil Service Board and a member and chair of the Duluth City Charter Commission from 1955 to 1968. He served on the Duluth Seaway Port Authority, serving as president in 1971, 1973-1975, and was appointed by President Reagan to the Advisory Board of the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corp., serving from 1983 to 1992.

He was a founding member of the Lawyer's Professional Responsibility Board, serving from 1971-1979, and was a member of the Minnesota Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure. He was president of the Minnesota Bar Association from 1980-1981. He served on the Board of Trustees of the William Mitchell College of Law. He was a deacon at the Pilgrim Congregational Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, David Fredin Sr. in 1926; his mother, Laura McCormack Fredin in 1975; his wife, Harriet Starin Fredin in 1993; his son, Peter Fredin in 1991; and his brother, David Fredin Jr. in 1972.

He is survived by his son, Eric Fredin of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren Rebecca and Zachary, both of Columbus; two nieces and a nephew of Mexico City and Houston.
Memorial service: 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Pilgrim Congregational Church. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.

George "Hots" Anderson
State Hall of Famer in three sports

George "Hots" Anderson, 94, of West Duluth, elected to the state Halls of Fame in bowling, softball, and horseshoes, died peacefully, with his family, in St. Mary's Hospice on Sunday, June 17, 2001.

He was born in Duluth on Nov. 18, 1906, to Louis and Marie Anderson. He had attended the Irving School and Denfeld High School. He married Mildred Tolan on Dec. 31, 1927, in the former St. Clement's Catholic Church. He was a member of St. James and Holy Family Catholic Churches.

George had worked as a foreman at Coolerator for 30 years. He had also worked as the playground supervisor at Memorial Park.

He was a charter member of the Duluth Area Bowling Association and was inducted into the Duluth Area Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1971. He was a charter member of the State Bowling Hall of Fame, inducted into it in 1990; he was inducted into the State Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1985; and was inducted into the Minnesota Horseshoe Pitcher Association Hall of Fame in 1972.

George had designed the indoor horseshoe courts at Wheeler Field. He had also helped the blind to bowl.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred in 2000; a son, David Lloyd in 1991; his parents; brothers Gilbert, William, Ernie, John and Alvin; and sisters Edythe Bull and Elsie Fournier.

He is survived by sons, William J. (Stephanie "Stell") of Duluth and George "Larry" (Lorraine) of Cloquet; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today with rosary recitation at 6 p.m. in the Foley Chapel. Visitation continues at 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Wednesday in St. James Catholic Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery. If friends so desire, the family prefers memorials. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

Glenn D. Paulick
Glenn D. Paulick, 77, of Gilliat Street passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001, at St. Luke's hospice in Duluth.
He was born March 25, 1924, in Glyndon, Minn., to Ernest and Nellie (Nelson) Paulick. Glenn served in the Navy during World War II, as a third class quartermaster in the navigation department.

On July 20, 1969, he married Deloris Bugbee in Duluth. Glenn was a foreman for the city of Duluth Water and Gas for 33 years.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and anything associated with the outdoors.

Glenn was preceded in death by his brother, Eugene.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Deloris of Duluth; sons John Paulick of Duluth, Robert Bugbee of Duluth, Thomas (Tami) Bugbee of Richmond, Ky., and Michael (Brenda) Bugbee of Columbia Heights, Minn.; a daughter, Valerie (Timothy) Booth of Cottage Grove, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and his beloved little kit-kit, Jeep.
Memorial service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth, Chaplain Craig Carlson officiating. Private burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Nels William Allen
Nels William Allen, 91, longtime Lakeside resident, died Friday, June 15, 2001.
He is survived by a sister, Mamie Ahola of South Range; a brother, Walter (Edith) Allen of La Puente, Calif., seven nieces; a nephew; and several cousins in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Finland.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home, Pastor Greg Gullicksrud officiating. Burial in Lakeside cemetery.

Richard Timm Osterberg
Richard Timm Osterberg, a most remarkable man, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 23, 2001. No more pain, no more suffering.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota, he was a special education teacher for many years at the high school and John A. Johnson in Two Harbors, an athlete and fine musician.

He was the most beloved son of Lucille Bryan, loving brother to Diane and Jean, and caring uncle to Susan.
A private graveside ceremony was held Saturday, May 26, in Memory Gardens cemetery, Arlington Heights, Ill.

Clifford Benard Brundage Jr.
Clifford Benard Brundage Jr., 84, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Cliff was born Sept. 28, 1916, in Hoboken, N.J., to Clifford Brundage Sr. and Jennie Westfield Brundage, who are deceased. He was married to Ellie Farley Brundage, who is deceased.

Cliff was general superintendent of U.S. Steel's Duluth Works in Morgan Park from 1968 until 1973. He was a member of the Kitchi Gammi Club and Northland Country Club while in Duluth.

He is survived by his children, James Brundage of Blaine, Minn., Dian Dowling of Athens, Ga., and Judy Bounds of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by seven grandchildren including Ashley and Joel Brundage of Duluth.

Elsie E. Peterson
Elsie E. Peterson, 76, of Minnesota Avenue died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born June 29, 1924, to Arthur and Selma (Long) Johnson in Shaw, Minn. Elsie graduated from Cotton High School in 1942 and from the Greysolon Tuberculosis Sanitarium Nursing School in Elmsferd, N.Y., in 1945. She married Lester Peterson on Sept. 27, 1947, in Duluth. Elsie also graduated from the Duluth School of Cosmetology in 1967.

She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and Martha's Circle, the American Legion Auxiliary, and was a past president and active in the Park Point PTA for many years. Elsie enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, her Park Point neighborhood and neighbors and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester on April 25, 2001, and a sister, Vivian.

Elsie is survived by her son, Greg (Jenny) Peterson of Duluth; a daughter, Bonnie (Lee) Conger of Huntington, W.Va.; grandchildren Andrea Peterson, Stephanie Peterson, Tregg Lindberg and Anders (Andrea) Lindberg; a sister, Ethel Barnes of Indianapolis; a brother, Walter (Helen) Johnson of Duluth; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.
Family will greet friends from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service today in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, the Rev. John Sippola officiating. Inurnment in Sunrise Memorial Park. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.
