Dr. Dale W. Olsen
Dr. Dale W. Olsen, 69, of London Road died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Benedictine Health Care Center.
Dale was born in Duluth on April 28, 1932, to William and Olive Olsen. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1960 and received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth, his master of arts in public administration and his doctor of philosophy degrees from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He was a political science professor at UMD for 35 years, retiring in 1997. He received the UMD Student Association Outstanding Teacher Award in 1975. He served on the Duluth Planning Commission, the Duluth Charter Commission, the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency Board and the Voyageurs National Park Board.

He Was deeply committed to issues relating to the environment and the humane treatment of animals and was a longtime member of Animal Allies Humane Society of Duluth. He is survived by his wife, Jacquelyn; his beloved dogs, Rudy and Misty; and a brother-in-law, Edward Merhar of Lakeland, Fla.
According to Dale's wishes, there will be no memorial service. Instead, it would please him to have us take a quiet moment to reflect on the gifts of family, true friendships, the healing beauty of nature, and the loyalty and simple wisdom of God's creatures from whom we can learn so much.

In Dale's memory, those who wish may make a donation to Animal Allies Humane Society, 407 W. Michigan St., Duluth, MN 55802.

Esther Lucia Lindstrom
Esther Lucia Lindstrom, 94, of Duluth passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.
She was born Sept. 13, 1906, to John and Lucia Osell in Duluth. She graduated from Bethel Academy in St. Paul and worked as a secretary. She and her husband, "Ollie, " then ran the family grocery store in Fond du Lac for many years.

She was a longtime member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she was active with the Martha Circle and was a Sunday school secretary for many years.

Esther was the last surviving of ten siblings; and her husband, Oliver "Ollie" died in 1980.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews and three sisters-in-law.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Saturday in Bethany Baptist Church, 6700 Grand Ave., Pastor Mark Watkins officiating. Burial in Union cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Marie A. Kuehn
Marie A. Kuehn, 75, died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home, Duluth.
Marie was born Sept. 4, 1925, in Maple Plain, Minn., to Benjamin and Anna (Larson) White. Before coming to Duluth, she lived in Mora, McGrath and Long Lake, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; and her brothers, Christopher and Clifford White.

Marie is survived by her daughter, Linda (Daniel) Veillet of Duluth; her son, Ralph (Sharon) Kuehn of Birchwood, Minn.; her sister, Stella Anderson; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gloria White, Sister Veronica Kuehn, Clara Kuehn, Juliann Kuehn, Agnes and Max Ahner; grandsons Marc and Scott Veillet; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in St. Peter and Paul Church, Lorretto, Minn. Burial in St. Peter and Paul cemetery. No floral tributes please. Memorials to The School Sisters of Notre Dame, 170 Good Counsel Drive, Mankato, MN 56001, or any cause considered important. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth, 727-3555.

Annamae Fairley
Annamae Fairley, 84, of 85th Avenue West died Monday, June 11, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born in Duluth on May 15, 1917, to Charles William and Anna Bolinda (Larsen) Campbell. A New Duluth and Morgan Park resident all her life, she was a graduate of Stowe, Morgan Park High School and the Duluth Junior College. She worked as an office manager for the Burns Lumber Co., as a legal secretary for Reliance Collection Agency and as a secretary/bookkeeper for Western Transit. She married James Robert Fairley on Feb. 17, 1940, in Boston. Annamae was a homemaker, avid seamstress, wonderful cook and baker.

She was a member of United Protestant Church, where she served as secretary for 12 years. She served on every church board, was a past president of the church council, deaconess, Sunday school and weekday Christian education teacher as well as Sunday school superintendent, church delegate at the state convention, Cub Scout den mother, DeMoLay mother, Morgan Park band parent and church camp councilor.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, the Rev. William Joseph Campbell and Robert Hamilton Campbell; and her sister, Thelma Christine Palm.

Survivors include her husband, James; sons Jon Scott of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and James Robert Jr. (Martha M.) of Chaplin, Minn.; her daughter, Janice Ann (Richard) Fleischauer of Saginaw; grandchildren Dawn Maria Vinson, David Campbell Fairley, Ross Emmanuel Fleischauer, Amanda Lee Onnen, Jason Robert Fairley, Janine Joy Murphy, James William Fairley; great-grandchildren Katelyn Ashley Vinson, Hunter Matthew Onnen; step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and beloved auntie to 11 nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday in Bell Brothers Chapel and continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in United Protestant Church in Morgan Park. The Rev. Marilyn Evans officiating. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery, Hermantown. Memorials to United Protestant Church. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Clifford C. Sunnarborg
Clifford C. Sunnarborg, 79, of Sarasota, Fla., died Monday, June 4, 2001.
He was born March 2, 1922, in Duluth and moved to Sarasota 20 years ago from Pittsburgh. He was a retired manager having worked in the headquarters accounting department of U.S. Steel Corp. A graduate of the School of Business Administration at the University of Minnesota, he was a member of the Church of the Palms-Presbyterian in Sarasota and had served there as an elder, clerk of session and member of the foundation board. He also served on the board of directors of the Presbyterian Church Homes and Housing Foundation and committees of the Presbytery. He was a Mason and an Army Air Force flying officer during World War II.

Survivors include daughters Karen A. Sunnarborg of Boston and Joanne L. Sunnarborg of Portland, Ore.; a son, Clifford P. Sunnarborg of Fraser, Mich.; a brother, Kenneth H. Sunnarborg of Duluth; and three grandsons.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. June 25 in Church of the Palms-Presbyterian, Sarasota. The National Cremation Society, Sarasota chapter, is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Church of the Palms-Presbyterian, 3224 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, FL 34239.

Martha J. Baker
Martha J. Baker, 75, of Polk Street died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born in Chisholm on April 1, 1926, to Albert and Martha Anstice. She was a Duluth resident most of her life. She married Harry Baker on Nov. 5, 1946, in Ironwood, Mich. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a 20-year member of AA. Martha was known for her good cooking and baking, and had a good word and advice for those needing it.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Iver Smith, in 1999; her stepfather, Iver Carlson; a sister, Esther Dezell; a granddaughter, Jennifer Smith; a great-granddaughter, Hope Fuller; and daughters-in-law Marie Smith and Jackie Smith.

She is survived by her husband, Harry; sons Ronald (Angela) Smith of Duluth, Jeffery (Suzanne) Baker of Duluth and Tim (Dorrine) Baker of Hermantown; a daughter, Nell Rae (Dennis) Dwyer of Dayton, Ohio; a sister, Gladys (Tony) Vittorio of Saginaw; half-sister, Susan Alsup of California; 10 grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Monday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Charles Flynn officiating. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Elsie E. Peterson
Elsie E. Peterson, 76, of Minnesota Avenue died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice in Duluth.
Family will greet friends from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday in Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, the Rev. John Sippola officiating. A full obituary will appear in Tuesday's edition. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.

Conrad "Mack" M. Fredin
Conrad "Mack" M. Fredin, 79, of London Road, formerly of East Fourth Street and Skyline Drive, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2001, in Lakeside Manor.

Erick Taisto Grondahl
Erick Taisto Grondahl, 84, of 87th Avenue West died Friday, March 30, 2001, in Nopeming.
He was born in Isabella and moved to Duluth in 1941. He graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1935. He was lead hand electrician for Duluth Winnipeg & Pacific Railway, where he worked for over 40 years, retiring in 1981.

Erick was a lifetime member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and International Brotherhood of Blacksmiths and Boilermakers. He was an officer in Knights of Kaleva and a member of the Sampo Association, DWP Retirement Club, West Duluth Moose Lodge 1478, Morgan Park Senior Center, Finland Minnesota Historical Society, National Association of CCC Alumni, United Protestant Church in Morgan Park and a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. He was an avid outdoorsman.

Preceding him in death were is parents, Arthur and Fiina Grondahl; a sister, Leila Youngquist; and an infant son, Gary.

He is survived by his wife, Vivian; sons Robert E. of Lenexa, Kan., Edward A. (Jan) of Dallas and John P. (Judy) of Duluth; a brother, Viljo (Dorothy) Grondahl, of Duluth; a sister, Mae Runnberg, of Two Harbors; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Family prefers memorials directed to United Protestant Church, Morgan Park. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Norman Stenberg
Norman Stenberg, 82, of Baxter, Minn., formerly of Duluth and Thief River Falls, died peacefully at home Friday, March 30, 2001, with his family by his side.
Norman was born June 21, 1918, in Greenbush, Minn., to Henry M. and Louise (Berensen) Stenberg. He married Palma Anderson in Greenbush on Nov. 25, 1943. He had worked as an electrician, retiring in 1981. He and his wife had also been 17-year winter residents of Apache Junction, Ariz.

Norman was a member of IBEW 242. He had served on the church council of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Duluth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Arthur, Joseph and Harry Stenberg; sisters Luella Wilson, Emma Zabracki and Mabel Bell.

He is survived by his wife Palma "Pam" of Baxter; a son, Stuart (Denise) Stenberg, of Duluth; daughters Lucy (Mac) McKercher of Plymouth, Minn., Sharon (Joe) Miller of Maple Grove, Minn., Marcia (Don) Nelson of Baxter and Arlene (Dave) Martti of Ham Lake, Minn.; grandsons Chad, Brian, Nicholas and Justin; and granddaughters Carrie, Kristen, Katie, Mollie, Amie, Anne and Jessie.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Nelson-Doran Funeral Home, Brainerd. Visitation continues noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Brainerd. The Rev. Andrew Prin officiating. Burial in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Brainerd.

Annie Elizabeth Finnegan
Annie Elizabeth Finnegan, 13, of London Road died Saturday, March 31, 2001, because of an automobile accident.
She was born in Virginia and was a student at Ordean Middle School. Annie was a member of Duluth East Greyhound's hockey team and Duluth ESS soccer team. She was an accomplished athlete and played tennis, skateboarded and water skied. She was a four time USASA National Snowboard Champion and placed third in the U.S. Open Snowboard Championships. Annie was a winner of the 1999 Shrine Circus poster contest.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Patrick Finnegan; her aunt, Joni Williams; and a cousin, Stephanie Williams.

She is survived by her parents, Peter and Kelly and brothers Patrick and Erin of Duluth; paternal grandmother, Marcie Finnegan of Virginia; maternal grandparents, Jeanne Pepelnjak of Virginia and John William "Bill" Pepelnjak of Biwabik; aunts Mary (John Ongaro) Finnegan, Linda (Mike) Jarmer and Jayne (Mark) Dewhurst; uncles John (Lisa) Finnegan, Jim Finnegan, John Pepelnjak, Tom Pepelnjak and Mike Williams; cousins Daniel Ongaro, Casey Tatro, Jessie Williams and Mark and Katie Dewhurst; and numerous great aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation: 2:30 until the 3:30 p.m. service Tuesday in St. Michael's Catholic Church, 4901 E. Superior St. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.
