Paul J. "Dutz" Dutmer
Paul J. "Dutz" Dutmer, 66, of 101st Avenue West died unexpectedly Saturday, July 14, 2001, at his home in Duluth.
He was born Oct. 23, 1934, in Duluth to Charles and Edith (Londo) Dutmer. He lived most of his life in Morgan Park. He attended St. Margaret Mary's School and graduated from Morgan Park High School. He served in the Navy from 1953 to 1955. He married Dolores (Dolly) Antonutti on May 12, 1956. He was a bricklayer and security guard for U.S. Steel. He retired after 29 years of service. He was then employed for 15 years with Como Tire and Battery as maintenance manager for their Milkhouse properties. He retired in 1996.

He was a member of the VFW Post 6320, Gary-New Duluth Community Club, St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, and played in the city bocce leagues for several years. He enjoyed golfing, and his friends and family, and he took an active interest in his grandchildren's activities.

Paul was kind, gentle and a devoted husband to his wife, and a wonderful father to his daughters. He will be deeply missed by his wife, daughters and grandchildren, who all adored him.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Jeanne and Phyllis; a brother, Bill Dutmer; and a grandson, Andrew Dzuck.

He is survived by his wife, Dolly of 45 years; his daughters, Dawn McKenzie of White Bear Lake, Minn., Diane Dutmer-Pfeffer of Duluth, Joan (Al) Burger of Bloomington, Minn., Jane (Don) Dzuck of Duluth, Paula (Paul) Nephew of Proctor and Jenny (Chris) Skull of Duluth; a brother, John (Helen) Dutmer of San Antonio, Texas; a sister, Rosemary Koepke of Esko; grandchildren Mike and Matt McKenzie, Bonnie Pfeffer, DeAnna and Darrin Dzuck, Steph and Stacy Nephew, Joe Burger and Jenna Skull; and many nephews and nieces.

Everbody is going to miss PaPa!
Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Wednesday in Foley Chapel with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, the Rev. Father John Golobich officiating. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Military honors accorded by Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funerals, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

Verle Marguerite DeNio
Verle Marguerite DeNio, 92, a resident of Lake Haven Manor, formerly of Polk Street, died Monday, July 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 19, 1908, in Aitkin, Minn., to Oscar Dean and Estella May (Brown) Davis. She had been a Duluth resident since 1935. In 1940, Verle owned and operated a beauty salon in Duluth. She had also been employed as a cook assistant at Hotel Duluth, from which she retired in 1972. She married Thomas Herald DeNio in Superior.

Verle had helped her grandson, Rick, work on their family tree for the past 12 years. As a caregiver, Verle's daughter, Marguerite, would take her mother to restaurants, shopping and walks in Duluth. She was baptized in October 1997, by Father Vincent Arimond.

Verle was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many people. She made us all laugh, in good times and in bad.

Verle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas, in 1965; brothers Howard, Harold, Bruce and Loren Davis; and a granddaughter, Shelley Daby.

Survivors include a son, Thomas (Mary) DeNio Jr.; daughters Marguerite (Clarence "Sonny") Love and Genevieve (James) Hinnenkamp; grandsons Richard "Rick" Darby, Keith Love and James Hinnenkamp Jr.; granddaughters Leora (James) Thompson and Cassandra Hinnenkamp; great-grandchildren Nicholas Crandall (Darby), Dustin Love, Linze Crandall (Darby), Kayla Love, Aleeshia Love, Christina Thompson and Nicole Thompson; stepdaughters Ethel (William) Mencel, Irene (Ordean) Sorenson and Georgeann Cisotto; stepson Donald DeNio; sisters-in-law Marjorie (John) DeNio and Ethel (Adelard) Bujold; three nieces; two nephews; and many cousins and friends, including a special nephew, Jeff Gustafson.
Graveside service: 11 a.m. Saturday in Oneota cemetery, the Rev. Father Vincent Arimond officiating. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

James R. Stuckman
James R. Stuckman, 81, of Duluth and Wapakoneta, Ohio, passed away Monday, July 2, 2001, in Ohio.
He was born to Francis R. and Leilla (Osborn) Stuckman on Nov. 21, 1919, in Duluth. Jim was a 1937 graduate of Central High School, where he was a member of the swim team. In 1939, he graduated from Duluth Business College. In 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Upon his return from overseas, he was a mail carrier for the United States Post Office. He again served his country during the Korean War at the Duluth Air Base, and then returned to the post office until 1959. At that time, he accepted a civil service position at the newly formed Air National Guard, Duluth base, retiring as CMSGT in 1976.

He was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church, AARP, Association of Retired Federal Employees, Air Force Retired Sergeants Association, West Duluth American Legion and Central Class of 1937 reunion committee.

Jim loved snowmobiling, hiking, canoeing and the senior citizens swim at Laura Macarthur School.

Jim met Jean Wheeler in Syracuse, N.Y., and married her in Belleville, Ill., on Oct. 24, 1943. They were married 55 years when Jean passed away in 1998.

Jim is also preceded in death by his daughter, Linda; a brother, Harold; sisters, LillyBelle Campbell Oman and Elma Stuckman.

He is survived by his daughters, Sandy (Ron) Wentz of Duluth, and Jan (David) Kuck of Wapakoneta; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his 98-year-old sister, Leilla Flint, of Minnetonka, Minn.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today and 9 until the 10 a.m. service Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Inurnment in Park Hill cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to 148th Guard Family Network, 4680 Viper St., Duluth, MN 55811-6032. Gerald Bernard Thoresen
Gerald Bernard Thoresen, 94, of Highland Village Drive died Thursday, July 5, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital hospice.
He was born March 16, 1907, in Duluth to Jacob and Christine (Hunstad) Thoresen. He had worked for Standard Oil Co., starting as an office boy and retiring from the construction and maintenance department in 1972, after 50 years of service.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Duluth, AARP and PUG Club. He was past member of Local 346 and Moose Lake Moose Lodge 4787.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; his brother, Ed; and his first wife, Lyell M. (Rasmussen) in 1959.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Meta M. (Schloe); sons Jack of Lady Lake, Fla., and Gerald P. (Cathy) of Bishop, Calif.; daughters Kathrine (Gerald) Wilson and Maren (John) Pfuhl, both of El Cajon, Calif.; a stepson, Richard P. (Madalene) Kemp of Des Moines, Iowa; 21 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
There will be no service at this time. Private inurnment in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Donald "Doc" Warner Shaw Sr.
Area draftsman, airplane developer

Donald "Doc" Warner Shaw Sr., 71, of Park Point and Sand Key Island, Clearwater Beach, Fla., succumbed to complications of congestive heart failure in his home in Florida Tuesday, July 10, 2001.
He was born in Mitchell, S.D., June 12, 1930. Donald was the retired owner of Superior Steel of Duluth and worked for more 25 years for Modern Constructors and Marine Iron and Shipbuilding Company of Duluth. Mr. Shaw was most recently noted for developing and fabricating the airplanes that are now used for firefighter training across the country. He also created the Duluth footbridge that connects the Canal Park area with the DECC. While with Marine Iron, he worked on the United Airlines terminal in Chicago to fabricate the steel superstructure. In the 1960s and 1970s, he fabricated self-unloading equipment for some of the Great Lakes ore carriers. In his earlier career he worked on the natural gas pipeline projects in northern Minnesota. Doc was a member of the Duluth Sailing Club and participated in the very first Trans-Superior race. He was also active in the Duluth Youth Hockey Program, the Duluth Power Squadron and the Park Point Community Club. He was a great supporter to sailing programs in the area, youth hockey, Park Point and the city of Duluth. He was a mainstay at the Club Saratoga in Duluth where on any given Saturday he could be found enjoying his friends and their common love of jazz and R&B; during the afternoon jam sessions. Doc was known for his love of sailing on Lake Superior and his life on Park Point. He died at his home in Florida overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. It is where he requested to be in his final days.

His family, friends, business associates in Duluth, the surrounding area and the Twin Cities will miss his intelligence, his expertise in so many areas and his caring manner. He was a good friend.

Doc was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Stanley; a stepdaughter, Valerie; and his sister, Barbara Goman Kenney.

Survivors include his children, Janet Ann (Mark) Eide of Anoka, Minn., Donald W. Jr. (Marie) Shaw of Milford, Mass., Karen Lynn Shaw (D. Scott Wilkowske) of Prior Lake, Minn., and Heather Shaw of Duluth; sisters Mardelle Kelly of Arlington, Va., and Betty Higgins Minnetonka, Minn.; brothers William Shaw of Florida, Edward Michael Shaw of Phoenix, and Richard A. Shaw of Duluth; grandchildren Christopher Shaw, Timothy Shaw, Kimberly Shaw, and Donald W. Shaw III; his spouse, Jeanne V. Shaw of Duluth and his former spouse, Joan Shaw Kobbervig of Anoka; numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, business associates and friends.
Gathering of family and friends: 11 a.m. until the noon memorial service July 28 in Dougherty Funeral Home. The family will also receive friends after the service at Club Saratoga from 3-7 p.m. July 28 where there will be a celebration of Doc's life with the music he loved so much. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St., Duluth.

Milton E. Reeve
Milton E. Reeve, 75, of Duluth, formerly of International Falls, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born July 13, 1925, in Littlefork to Frederick and Minnie Reeve. He served in the Army Airborne during World War II with 677th Glider Field Artillery BN. He received honorable discharge in 1945. He married Doris Green Sept. 6, 1947. He worked as a police officer with the International Falls Police Department and retired in 1980.

He was a member of VFW Post 2948 of International Falls, American Legion, life member of Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, the 13th Airborne Division Association and Disabled American Veterans.

Milton was very active in the community of International Falls. He was a coach for various youth sports. He was an avid bowler and president of the area bowling association for several years.

Milton was known as "Grandpa." His humor and his gift to tell stories will be missed by all who knew him.

Milton is survived by his wife, Doris, of Duluth; a son, Stanley (Ruth) Reeve, of Duluth; a daughter, Roberta Kucera, of Honolulu; a brother, Harold (Eugenia) Reeve, of Anchorage, Alaska; a half-sister Judy (Bud) Molby, of Three Forks, Mont.; stepbrothers Rodney, Donald (Jo Ann) and Douglas (Darlene) Frick; stepsisters Doris and Vanetta; grandchildren Christopher "Todd" (Melonie) Kucera, Jennifer (Justin) Hoffmann, Eli (Heather) Reeve, Ryan (Jennifer) Reeve, Robert (Danyal) Reeve and Angela Reeve; great-grandchildren Victor Kucera, Kelly Miller, Samuel Kucera and Harley Reeve; and his close friend, Chris Kucera.
Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, International Falls. Private interment. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funerals, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St.

Nilda Elizabeth (Wedlund) Haynes
Nilda Elizabeth (Wedlund) Haynes, 79, of Duluth died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, while vacationing in Anchorage, Alaska.
Nilda was born to Alven and G. Elvira Wedlund in Mellen, Wis., on May 14, 1922. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1939. She married Leo J. Haynes June 21, 1941, and they lived in Fond du Lac for more than 50 years and were members of the Fond du Lac Community Church. She worked as a food service worker for many years at the Duluth Athletic Club and retired from the Black Steer.

She enjoyed traveling, spending time with her family and friends, the challenge of game shows and playing dominoes, crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Leo; brothers Charles and Walter; and a sister, Violet Hamilton.

Nilda is survived by daughters Charlene (John) Barbknecht of Centennial, Colo., Eileen (Dick) Grimes of Proctor; grandchildren Deana Collins of Superior, Shawn (Eric) Baker of Pike Lake and John Grimes; great-grandchildren Breanne and Mikayla Baker; sisters Virginia Withrow of Duluth, Madelene (Ken) Holland of International Falls; and a brother, Alven (Agnes) Wedlund of Proctor; many nieces and nephews.

She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel where service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
