Theresa Catherine Lowney Stokes Mrozik
Theresa Catherine Lowney Stokes Mrozik, 87, passed into the hands of our Lord on Friday, July 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit, surrounded by her loving family.
Theresa was born Aug. 20, 1913, in Lake Linden, Mich., to Patrick and Margaret Lowney. When she was a young girl her family moved to Duluth. She married her first husband, Edmund W. Stokes Sept. 24, 1935, and for a short time they relocated to Toledo, Ohio, before returning to Duluth. Theresa retired in 1977 after spending the last 25 of her working years at Kresge's (later known as Jupiter). She was awarded a diamond ring, of which she was very proud. She was a life member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Eagles Aerie 79 and a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Ladies Rosary Society.

In 1982, she married Robert Mrozik. Bob died just 14 months into their marriage. Theresa was once again a widow. At age 78, however, Theresa and a friend from her youth, Jim Meehan, were reintroduced and spent the next several years in companionship and traveling to near and far lands. When Jim passed away in 1993, Theresa spent her remaining years at Greysolon Plaza, where she made so many wonderful friends. She was a kind and gentle lady who spent her lifetime putting the needs of others before her own. She will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Edmund and Robert; her brothers, Joseph and Elmer (Smiley) Lowney; sisters-in-law Hazel Lowney and Delores Lowney, and her lifetime friend and traveling companion, James L. "Puggy" Meehan.

She is survived by her son, Robert (Susan) Stokes of Esko; a daughter, Janice Luke of Duluth; grandchildren Lori Luke, Linda (Mark) Lanigan, Gary (Patti) Luke, Steven Luke, David (Kristi) Stokes, Sheri Stokes and Melissa (Aaron) Martineau; great-grandchildren Jamie and Jared, Lexi and Nicholas, and Scott and Steven.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service 10 a.m. Monday in St. Mary's Star of Sea Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Mary's Star of the Sea (designate Holy Innocents Adoration Chapel), or to St. Mary's Foundation (designate Hospice).

Earl Charles Patton
Earl Charles Patton, 61, of North 42nd Avenue West died Thursday, July 12, 2001 in his home, following a brief illness.
He was born May 17, 1940, in Pontiac, Mich., to Vernon and Elsie (Ketola) Patton. He was a longtime Duluth and area resident. Earl was a 1958 graduate of Hermantown High School and had been employed as a painter for 39 years for various painting contractors, including Swanson and Youngdale Inc. He married his best friend, Judith A. Hage, on July 8, 1961, in Duluth. He was a member of Painters Union Local No. 386 in Minneapolis and Painters Union Local No. 106 in Duluth, Superior Wood Turners Club and the St. Paul Amateur Radio Club, with the call letters, NOMHB. He was a former member of the Hibbing Jaycees and the Cotton Volunteer Fire Department. Earl enjoyed woodworking and ham radio. His favorite place was his Lake Albert retreat that he made into a wonderful haven for his children, grandchildren and Judy.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He was husband of Judy; father of Julie (Lyle Marshall) Patton, Jane (Mike) Carlson, James (Stephanie) Patton and Jennifer Patton, all of Duluth; he was "Pops" to his grandchildren, whom he affectionately referred to as his "meatballs, " MaryAnne, Danielle, Kaytlin, Justin, Alaina, Mariah, Mikey, Matt, Hanna, Erin and Samantha; brother of Gerhua (Bryan) Eady of Norman, Okla., and Marvin (Cindy) Patton of Red Wing, Minn.; many nieces, nephews and cousins; his best friend and cousin, Dave Ketola; and "man's best friend, " Nellie, his cocker spaniel. Earl had many, many dear friends who came to visit him.
Gathering of family and friends: 12:30 until the 1:30 p.m. memorial service Wednesday in Elim Lutheran Church, 6101 Cody St., the Rev. Karen Linne officiating. Inurnment in Lakeview cemetery, Cotton. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

Charles K. Holbein
Charles K. Holbein, 64, of Commonwealth Avenue died Friday, July 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Mr. Holbein, a lifelong Duluth resident, was employed as a bartender.

Survivors include his children, Donnie of Arizona, Jeff of Cohasset, Minn., Brian of Duluth, Karla (Ralph) Gaskell of Duluth and Kristi Hage of Duluth; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and friends.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Thursday in Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth. Interment in Park Hill cemetery.

Marion Elizabeth Rode
Marion Elizabeth Rode, 89, of Duluth died Friday, July 13, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health care facility.
She was born Jan. 17, 1912, to Thomas and Edith (Mattson) Bruno in Duluth. Marion graduated from Cromwell High School and for over 30 years owned and operated the Sunny Side Cafe with her husband, retiring in 1984.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur, Aug. 8, 2000; and a son, William, Oct. 10, 1999.

Marion is survived by a daughter, Connie Rode of Duluth.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Waters of Park Point facility. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Jeanne Brule Close
Jeanne Brule Close, 84, formerly of Meadow Street, Proctor, died Thursday, July 12, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.
She was born May 15, 1917, to Francis and Marie Brule in Lake Linden, Mich. She had lived in Proctor since 1922 and graduated from Proctor High School in 1935.

Jeanne was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church from 1922 to 1998, and then moved to Pennel Park Apartments and joined St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Duluth Heights. She was a member of Daughters of Isabella for over 40 years, the Duluth Woman's Club, and Bethany Lutheran Sunshine Club and the Esther Circle. She was a former member of Credit Women International and volunteered at St. Scholastica Priory, Bennett Hall. In the 1940s and 1950s, Jeanne worked for the Albenbergs Clothing store in downtown Duluth.

Jeanne retired in 1980 from First American National Bank/Norwest, where she worked for over 18 years. She married Walter Close Oct. 6, 1977, in Duluth and he died in 1988. She will be greatly missed by her cousins, Lorraine (Richard) Hood of Franklin, Ga., Gregory Longpre of St. Joseph, Mich., John (Yvonne) Pflugi of Woodbury, Minn., Rita Remillard of Proctor and Jeanne Contel of Clovis, Calif.; a nephew, David (Kathy) Watczak of Duluth; several great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Duluth Heights, the Rev. Father Noel Stretton officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Catherine Duval Rankin
Catherine Duval Rankin, 89, formerly of Duluth, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2001, in Seattle.
Catherine grew up in Duluth, attending Denfeld High School. She and her husband, Charley, along with young son, Ralph, moved to Seattle in 1940 where Charley had been hired by a fledgling Boeing Airplane Co. Catherine enjoyed returning to Duluth regularly to visit and attend Denfeld class of 1929 reunions.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charley W. Rankin.

Catherine is survived by a sister, Vera Swanson, and a cousin, Eileen Bonifaci, both of Duluth; children Ralph, Mary Ann and Dale Rankin, all of Seattle; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held in Washington.

Vernard T. Thompson
Vernard T. Thompson, 86, of Largo, Fla., died Friday, July 13, 2001, in Sun Coast Hospital, Largo.
Born in Duluth, he formerly owned Wonderland Resort on the North Shore and was a veteran of World War II, having served as a medic in the Army. He moved to Largo in 1968 and was the owner of Vern Thompson Realtor in Clearwater, Fla. He was a member of Woodlawn Church of God, Clearwater.

Survivors include his wife, Elvie L.; a son, Jeffrey of Largo; a daughter, Pamela L. Krans of Largo; grandchildren Heather Bauers of Colorado Springs, Colo., Kaylie Thompson, Jeremy Krans and Amanda Thompson, all of Largo.
Arrangements by Moss-Feaster Funeral Home, Largo, (727) 446-2375.

Frank D. McLaughlin
Frank D. McLaughlin, 79, of Lakeland Shores, Minn., died Wednesday, July 11, 2001.
Born July 5, 1922, in Minneapolis, he was a lifelong minister.

Survivors include his wife, Edna; children Judith (Don) Ramsey, Richard (Mary Lou) McLaughlin, Royce (Pamela) McLaughlin, Frank Jr. (Jeanette) McLaughlin, Leah (Larry) Pitkanen; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Sunday in Simonet Funeral Home, 6429 Osgood Ave. N., Stillwater, Minn. (651) 439-7770. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Hope Christian Church, 4911 Hodgson Road, Shoreview, Minn. Interment in Fort Snelling National cemetery, Minneapolis.

Raymond John LeBlanc
Raymond John LeBlanc, 83, of Kenwood Avenue, formerly of Superior, died Friday, July 13, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center.
He was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Duluth to Richard and Catherine (Schlegel) LeBlanc. He had worked at the Civilian Conservation Camps, as a boilermaker for the DM&IR;, and later as a welder for International Union of Dredgemen. He was a past a member of Moose Lodge 1302.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Glen and Herbert; a son, Richard; a daughter, Mary Kay Bahnsen; and two grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan (William) Eng of Duluth; sons James of Duluth, Patrick (Peggy) of Ramsey, Minn., John of Maple Grove; brothers Norbert and Melvin; sisters Mary Jane Knudsen, Mae Downs and Kathleen Stauber; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Nora Hellen Sterner
Nora Hellen Sterner, 85, formerly of South 61st Avenue West and St. Ann's Residence, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.
She was born in Bigelow, Ark., and grew up in Ashland and Washburn, Wis., area. She graduated from Ashland High School and had been a Duluth resident for many years. She married Woodrow Sterner on Aug. 25, 1945, in Duluth. She worked at Diamond Tool, Schmidt Grocery and American Linen.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Hattie Dukelow; brothers Fred, Frank and Russell Dukelow; a sister, Ruth Carlston; and her husband, Woodrow in 1979.

She is survived by daughters, Kathleen Goodlet of Green Bay, Wis., Mary Ann Rogers (John Gordon) and Julia (Michael) Opack, both of Duluth. Nora cherished and loved her grandchildren, Melanie Ann and Erick Opack, Megan, Troy and James Goodlet and Melissa Rogers.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Gerald Hale Loomis
Gerald Hale Loomis, 84, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Chickasha, Okla.
Gerald, previously of Duluth, was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Loomis; and his wife, Harriet.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy Sullivan of Chickasha; a son, Gerald (Carol) of Maple Grove, Minn.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Chester Loomis of Duluth.
Services were held in Oklahoma.

Eleanor Marie Foro
Eleanor Marie Foro, 89, of Duluth died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in the presence of her family in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Eleanor was born Sept. 7, 1911, to Sam and Inga Erickson in Duluth. She worked as a store clerk at Woolworth's and Glass Block, and as a banquet waitress at the Hotel Duluth and The Captain's Table. Eleanor did cleaning services at United Realty until her retirement in 1982. She resided in her lake home near Cotton from 1983 until her passing. Eleanor married Norman Foro on March 21, 1936, in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman; her sisters Esther Congdon, Ruth Schnuckle and Mable Schnuckle; brothers William, Clarence, Melvin, Sigurd and Roy; and her parents.

Eleanor is survived by a daughter, Jean Arntson; sons Ross (Diane) Foro and Scott (Debra) Foro, all of Duluth; and nine grandchildren.
Memorial service: 10 a.m. Saturday in Fred Olson Mortuary Chapel. Inurnment in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary.
