Wilfred A. "Bill" George
Wilfred A. "Bill" George, 88, a lifelong resident of Duluth died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice.
He was born March 27, 1913, to Murray and Ethel (Myron) George and lived for many years on Park Point, and later on McDonnell Road. He graduated from Duluth Central High School, and in 1935 from the Duluth Junior College, the predecessor of the University of Minnesota Duluth. He was commissioned an officer in the Naval Reserve during the latter part of World War II and served on harbor patrol in Duluth.
He was the original owner and manager of W.A. George Appliance Parts from 1934 until he sold the business in 1982.
Bill was the last of the five original charter members of the Duluth chapter of United States Power Squadron and a lifelong boater on Lake Superior. He was a member of Lake Superior Transportation Club, Minnesota Historical Society, St. Louis County Historical Society, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Railroad Museum.
During retirement, he and Mildred, his wife and companion of 61 years, traveled extensively in their motor home. In the past few years they enjoyed their loving companionship closer to home, and the pleasures of gardening and working around their home and yard.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marian Rall.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred, and their children, Kathy (Wayne Sr.) Carlson of Superior, Murray (Lynda) George of Duluth, Roberta (John) Christiansen and Geoffrey George, both of Two Harbors; a sister, Barbara (Thomas) Bingham of Hollywood, Calif.; grandchildren Wayne Jr., Sean, Tamara, Andrew, Anna, Miijalisa, Seth, Jorn and Taiahla; six great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to his niece, Rosemarie, for spending time with Aunt Millie while he was in the hospital.
Visitation: 12:30 until the 1:30 p.m. service Saturday in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum. Entombment in Sunrise Mausoleum. Memorials are preferred to Duluth Power Squadron. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.
Shirley A. Wangen
Shirley A. Wangen, 73, of Elder Drive died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Viewcrest Nursing Home.
She was born in Superior and lived in Duluth most of her life. She had moved to Moose Lake in 1972 and returned to Duluth in 1996. She and her husband, Robert, had owned and operated Wangen's Gifts while living in Moose Lake.
Shirley had been very active in the PTA and served as president. She had also been active in Girl Scouts, was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, singing in its choir, and was a member of United Methodist Women Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Larry and Gladys Robert; and a brother, Larry Robert Jr.
Surviving are her husband, Robert C.; children Steve (Janet) Wangen of Esko, Laurie (Jon) Geiger of Carbondale, Ill., Cindy (Roger) Johnson of Duluth and David (Gail) Wangen of Cloquet; and grandchildren Rae Anna and Nicole Wangen, Scott Geiger, Jodi and Jamie Johnson, and Emily and Abbey Wangen.

Nelma Ellen Nelson
Nelma Ellen Nelson, 84, of Jean Duluth Road died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born in Houghton, Mich., on Sept. 10, 1916, to Anton and Ina (Jankala) Pelto. She attended Hancock Elementary School and later worked in a meat packing plant making sausage. Nelma married
Norman Morris Nelson in Michigan. They made their home in Hancock, Mich., and later moved to Duluth, sharing time between both homes.
Nelma was of the Lutheran faith and enjoyed the Finnish worship services in her hometown. She enjoyed plants and gardening, rug weaving and was an accomplished seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.
Survivors include her husband, Norman of Duluth; and several siblings in the Houghton/Hancock area.
There will be no services. Burial in Michigan. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.
Irene H. Jensen
Irene H. Jensen, 79, of New Hope, Minn., formerly of Minneapolis and Duluth, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001.
She is survived by children Kirby (Georgia), Kevin and Kim (Cecelia); eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four siblings; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Friday with vigil prayers at 7 p.m. in Kapala-Glodek-Malone Chapel, New Hope. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. Saturday in Church of Our Lady of Victory, Minneapolis. Interment in Crystal Lake cemetery.
Gerald Hale
Gerald Hale, 84, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Chickasha, Okla.
Gerald, previously of Duluth, was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Loomis; and his wife, Harriet.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy Sullivan of Chickasha; a son, Gerald (Carol) of Maple Grove, Minn.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Chester Loomis of Duluth.
Services were held in Oklahoma.
Agnes Finn Sollberger
Agnes Finn Sollberger, 85, formerly of Duluth, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Agnes was born in Duluth Feb. 12, 1916, to William and Rose Finn. She was a retired seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward (Sully) Sollberger.
She is survived by sons William (Marisia) Finn of Wichita Falls and Stephen Finn; a brother, Robert Finn of Anchorage, Alaska; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Duluth. Burial following in Calvary cemetery.
Harold "Harry" E. Gould
Harold "Harry" E. Gould, 81, of Stanford Avenue has gone to his heavenly home Wednesday, May 23, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Duluth to Henry and Mary Louise (Leonard) Gould and was a graduate of Duluth Central High School. He married
Marion Chevalier on Jan. 7, 1946. Harry was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the Army National Guard, retiring in 1979 as a chief warrant officer, 94th Armored Battalion. He then worked at the city of Duluth's Assessor's office, retiring in 1983.
Harry was a life member of the 125th Field Artillery Association and VFW Post 137. He was also a member of the CMTC, CCC Alumni, AARP, American Legion Post 71 and the Retired Officer's Association.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Louise Gould.
He is survived by his wife, Marion Louise Chevalier Gould; sons Lorne of Fairfield, Calif., Dennis of Duluth, Richard of Ballston Spa, N.Y., and Tim of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Fred of Cloquet; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Sunday in Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Military honors will be presented by the Combined Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Memorials preferred to Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.
David R. Carlson
David R. Carlson, 54, of Duluth passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, May 23, 2001.
He was born Aug. 29, 1946, in Duluth to Roger "Rod" and Marian (Johnson) Carlson. He graduated from Denfeld High School and also from UMD with a bachelor's degree in business. He married
Jane Bianchet in Duluth on March 16, 1968. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad since 1974.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was a past vice president on the church council. He loved his grandchildren and enjoyed railroad antiques and traveling. He was a member of TCU Lodge 415. He was involved with the Chicago and Northwestern, Mesaba Railroad, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Soo Line Union Pacific Historical Societies. He was a past president of LS&M; Railroad, past president and member of Lake Superior Transportation Club, and a member of the National Model Railroad Association and its Thousand Lakes Chapter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Carlson; daughters Lynda (Brian) McLaughlin of Cloquet, Janet (Terry) Fawcett of Duluth and Susan (Eric) Adams of Duluth; a brother, Dale (Melissa) of Duluth; a sister, Karen A. Carlson of Duluth; grandchildren Garrett and Rachel McLaughlin, Kaitlyn Fawcett and Carter Adams; special nieces, Emily, Stephanie, and Rebecca Carlson; and several other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and continuing from noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Zion Lutheran Church, the Revs. James Nelson and John Reppe officiating. Interment in Oneota cemetery.
Richard Timm Osterberg
Richard Timm Osterberg, a most remarkable man, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 23, 2001. No more pain, no more suffering.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota, he was a special education teacher for many years at the high school and John A. Johnson in Two Harbors, an athlete and fine musician.
He was the most beloved son of Lucille Bryan, loving brother to Diane and Jane, and caring uncle to Susan.
Private graveside ceremony: at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, in Memory Gardens cemetery, Euclid Avenue, Arlington Heights, Ill.
