Shirley A. Wangen
Shirley A. Wangen, 73, of Elder Drive died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, in Viewcrest Nursing Home.
She was born in Superior and lived in Duluth most of her life. She had moved to Moose Lake in 1972 and returned to Duluth in 1996. She and her husband, Robert, had owned and operated Wangen's Gifts while living in Moose Lake.

Shirley had been very active in the PTA and served as president. She had also been active in Girl Scouts, was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, singing in its choir, and was a member of United Methodist Women Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Larry and Gladys Robert; and a brother, Larry Robert Jr.

Surviving are her husband, Robert C.; children Steve (Janet) Wangen of Esko, Laurie (Jon) Geiger of Carbondale, Ill., Cindy (Roger) Johnson of Duluth and David (Gail) Wangen of Cloquet; and grandchildren Rae Anna and Nicole Wangen, Scott Geiger, Jodi and Jamie Johnson, and Emily and Abbey Wangen.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Asbury United Methodist Church, 6822 Grand Ave. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Nelma Ellen Nelson
Nelma Ellen Nelson, 84, of Jean Duluth Road died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born in Houghton, Mich., on Sept. 10, 1916, to Anton and Ina (Jankala) Pelto. She attended Hancock Elementary School and later worked in a meat packing plant making sausage. Nelma married Norman Morris Nelson in Michigan. They made their home in Hancock, Mich., and later moved to Duluth, sharing time between both homes.

Nelma was of the Lutheran faith and enjoyed the Finnish worship services in her hometown. She enjoyed plants and gardening, rug weaving and was an accomplished seamstress.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister.

Survivors include her husband, Norman of Duluth; and several siblings in the Houghton/Hancock area.
There will be no services. Burial in Michigan. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.

Irene H. Jensen
Irene H. Jensen, 79, of New Hope, Minn., formerly of Minneapolis and Duluth, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001.
She is survived by children Kirby (Georgia), Kevin and Kim (Cecelia); eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; four siblings; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Friday with vigil prayers at 7 p.m. in Kapala-Glodek-Malone Chapel, New Hope. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. Saturday in Church of Our Lady of Victory, Minneapolis. Interment in Crystal Lake cemetery.

Gerald Hale
Gerald Hale, 84, died Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Chickasha, Okla.
Gerald, previously of Duluth, was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Mary Loomis; and his wife, Harriet.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy Sullivan of Chickasha; a son, Gerald (Carol) of Maple Grove, Minn.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Chester Loomis of Duluth.
Services were held in Oklahoma.

Brady Lee Landstrom
Brady Lee Landstrom, 27, of Minneapolis Avenue died Friday, May 25, 2001.
He was born May 24, 1974, in Duluth to Brian and Carol (Lee) Landstrom. He attended schools in Duluth and Bemidji. Brady was employed as a service representative at Kolar Auto World and previously for Expert Tire. He married Wendy Byington Sept. 4, 1997, in Duluth. Brady enjoyed many hobbies and activities including hockey, football, wrestling, stock car racing, four wheeling, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Shirley Landstrom in 1979; and his father-in-law, George D. Byington in 1995.

Survivors include his wife, Wendy, and their son, Cameron; his father, Brian Landstrom of Duluth; his mother, Carol Lee of Tenstrike, Minn.; a brother, Cary (Dawn Finley) of Georgetown, Minn.; sisters Andrea and Alyssa Landstrom, both of Duluth; stepmother, Cassandra Holmes of Duluth; mother-in-law, Doris Byington of Bemidji; sister-in-law, Michelle Byington of New York, N.Y.; grandparents Charles and Lynn Landstrom of Duluth and L. Robert and Mildred Lee of Montevideo, Minn.; uncles Darryl (Colleen Nelson) Landstrom of Wayzata, Minn., Corey (Ann) Landstrom of Portland, Ore., Ross (Dawn) Demant of Duluth, David (Karen) Lee of Willmar, Minn., and Duane (Jan) Lee of Alexandria, La.; aunts Holly (Steve) Pillsbury of Duluth, Robin Eikill of Jacksonville, Fla., Barb (Rowland) Bike of Montevideo, Minn., and Audrey (Roger) Ellefson of Dawson, Minn.; step grandmother, Marian Holmes of Virginia, Minn.; step aunts Candace Furo of Duluth and Constance Christenson of Virginia; step uncles Allen Holmes and Thomas Holmes, both of Duluth; numerous cousins and many friends.

Brady was a devoted and loving husband and father. His smile, spunk and spirit of adventure will be sadly and deeply missed by his family and all who knew him.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday in the Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, and continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 45th Avenue East and Colorado Street, the Rev. Timothy Berdahl officiating. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Memorials to the Cameron Landstrom Trust Fund, c/o Wells Fargo Bank, would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St., 722-5131.

Gail M. Smerdon
Gail M. Smerdon, 37, of LaVaque Road died Friday, May 25, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center due to complications of a brain aneurysm.
Born Aug. 28, 1963, to Alvin and Clara (Simmonsen) Miller in Duluth, she graduated from Proctor High School in 1981. Gail married Robert Smerdon May 22, 1984, in Roanoke, Texas. She loved her garden, her home and working in the yard. Her unique personal touches are evident around her home and will leave an everlasting and beautiful mark on her family's home and in their lives. While motorcycling, snowmobiling, boating and riding jet skis and dirt bikes may not have been her first choice of entertainment, Gail went out of her way and chose to do these activities to spend time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Clara Miller.

Gail is survived by her husband, Bob, daughters Jessica and Alicia, and a son, Joshua, all at home; her father, Alvin "Al" Miller Sr. of Duluth; a brother, Alvin "Al" (Beth) Miller Jr. of Minneapolis; sisters Renee (Clyde) Steven of Perham, Minn., and Laurie (Bob) Mencel of Superior; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel.

John Warren McDonnell
John Warren McDonnell, 71, of West Morgan Street died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.
He was born in South Dakota Jan. 3, 1930, to Daniel and Maureen (Barnhardt) McDonnell. John was a graduate of Seattle University. He was a United States Air Force veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. On Sept. 9, 1958, he married Barbara Anne Long in Michigan and together they raised five children. John was employed by Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical for 34 years until his retirement. He was a member of the 242 Yacht Club, past president of the Optimists Club, and past member of Toastmasters. John and his wife of 42 years resided in North Port, Fla., during the winter months.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons Peter (Carri) McDonnell of Dillon, Colo., and James (Kimberly) McDonnell of Duluth; daughters Kathy (James) Murphy of Denver, Colo., Susan (Timothy) Tarr of Appleton, Wis., and Ann (Ron) Ozan of Duluth; 13 grandchildren; and many fish.
Gathering of family and friends: 1 until the 2 p.m. memorial service Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Memorials preferred to Boys and Girls Club of Duluth. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Michael D. Harris
Michael D. Harris, 56, of Hollywood, Fla., formerly of Park Point died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood after a courageous, three-year battle with lung cancer.
Mike was born June 20, 1944, in Duluth to Cecil D. "Bill" and Marie J. (Johnson) Harris. He was a 1962 graduate of Duluth Central High School. He joined the Navy in 1962, becoming a member of the U.S. Submarine Service and served aboard many subs, including fleet ballistic missiles (FBMs), fast attacks and vintage World War II boats. He retired from the sub service after 20 years as a radioman chief petty officer. After retirement, he taught at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, New London, Conn., and electronics at colleges in Chicago and Florida. He was employed until his death at the Fort Lauderdale International Airport.

Mike loved his family, friends, boating, golfing, and he was an avid Vikings fan.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mike is survived by his wife, Jacquilyn of Hollywood, a son, Michael Jr., and daughters Julie, Angel and Crystal, all of Florida; sisters Barbara Miller of Duluth, Kathy Brackett of Floodwood; brothers David of Cloquet and Richard of Duluth; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Thursday at the Park Point Beach House, 5000 Minnesota Ave., at the end of Park Point. Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard.

George Tervo
George Tervo, 82, of East 10th Street passed away Thursday, May 24, 2001, in his home.
He was born Feb. 22, 1919, in Pelkie, Mich., to Jacob and Maria (Mantyla) Tervo. George was a graduate of Baraga High School and in 1946 he married Katherine Versailles in Detroit. They later moved to Houghton, Mich., in 1953, where he went into a partnership operating the Tervo-White Refrigeration Sales and Service. He later accepted a position in Duluth with Refrigeration Wholesalers, which changed to National Temperature Controls, retiring in 1982. George enjoyed golfing with the Pike Lakers and the Senior Traveling Group. George was a active member of the Duluth Superior Camera Club; along with other members, he helped with the Photo Bridge 2000 Event.

George was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine; a daughter, Judy Gray of Rochester, Minn; a son, Robert (Nanette) Tervo of Duluth; granddaughters Sarah Tervo and Kirsten Gray; grandson, Adam Gray; special mother-in-law, Lena Versailles of the Lenox Senior High Rise, Duluth; special relatives Peter Moga Sr., Peter (Nancy) Moga Jr. and Richard (Pat) Tervo, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Interment in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

Marylina Hayden Price
Marylina Hayden Price passed away Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, in Duluth.
She was an educator in the Duluth Public School System, a music specialist K-12, taught African-American History, a resource consultant on African-American history, mentor, advisor and music coach, and author of a book of poems, "An Open Door of Treasures." In 1991, she was featured in a documentary with her Congdon Park Elementary School third-grade class on Twin Cities Public television's "Diary Black Minnesotans." Marylina was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Minnesota Iota, as well as NAACP and Calvary Baptist Church.

Her unique gracious and gentle manner motivated and touched many young lives in her teaching career.
Memorial reception: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Sunrise Memorial Park Chapel, Hermantown.
