Raymond A. Pichelman
Raymond A. Pichelman, 68, of St. Francis, Minn., died Sunday, May 20, 2001.
He was born May 4, 1933, in Duluth to Arthur Pichelman and Anne (Poupard).

He is survived by his wife, Lois; a son, Michael of Duluth; daughters Lorre (Craig) Buist of Hawaii, Karen Kelly of Rosemount, Minn., and Lisa Allen of Waconia, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Service: 1 p.m. Thursday in Church of St. Patrick of Cedar Creek, Oak Grove, Minn. Interment in Fort Snelling cemetery. Arrangements by Thurston-Lindberg Funeral Home, Anoka, Minn.

Bernard M. "Bernie" Talke
Bernard M. "Bernie" Talke, 78, of Duluth died Monday, May 21, 2001, in his home.
He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Duluth to Joseph and Frances (Jezierski) Talke. He was a 1940 graduate of Denfeld High School and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a car checker for the Great Northern Railroad and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Chester Talke in 1940 and Leonard Talke in 1997; and a sister, Florence Skorich in 1999.

He is survived by a daughter, Suzanne (Gary) Odegard of Eden Prairie, Minn.; granddaughters Tracey (Lex) Corliss and Kelly (Shawn) Wolkerstorfer; great-grandchildren Dakota and Ryan Wolkerstorfer and Chase and Livia Corliss; and a niece, Mary Skorich.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon Mass of Christian burial Thursday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial in Polish Catholic cemetery. Memorials to the Holy Family building fund are preferred. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

T. Edward Torgerson
T. Edward Torgerson, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, of Parkinson's disease at the Stewart Health Care Center at The Cypress in Charlotte, N.C.
He was born June 29, 1922, in Duluth to Levi and Allette Torgerson. He was called into active service in the Navy a year before Pearl Harbor. In 1943, after serving three years aboard ship, he was selected for officer's training in the Naval V-12 program at Duke University. After completing two years of basic engineering in 16 months, he was sent to Notre Dame Midshipmen School and was later commissioned as a lieutenant and sent back to sea. When the war ended in 1946, Mr. Torgerson returned to Duke and graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1949. He was later recalled for 17 months of duty in the Korean War.

Upon graduation, he reported to work at J.A. Jones Construction Co. in Charlotte, where he spent his entire working career. He retired from J.A. Jones in December 1983 as group vice president after a long, illustrious career. His 35 years with the prominent, internationally known construction company spans not only its history but its diversity as well.

Mr. Torgerson's notable accomplishments in the construction industry began as estimator in the J.A. Jones corporate office, advancing through increasingly important positions, from field superintendent to project manager to vice president and regional manager of the Tampa office, culminating with group vice president in 1972, overseeing all commercial and instructional construction for the firm, including four regional offices and two subsidiary companies. From Key West to Seattle and New York to San Francisco, some of the notable construction projects that Mr. Torgerson directed include: East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Seafirst Fifth Avenue Plaza in Seattle, AT&T; Headquarters in New York and Union Carbide Headquarters in Danbury, Conn.

He served on the board of directors of J.A. Jones from 1974 until 1984 as well as director of two Jones subsidiaries during the same period. He served as president of Associated General Contractors of America-Florida Chapter, was a member of the Duke University Engineering Alumni Association Council and the Duke University Engineering Development Committee, and was honored in 1985 as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Duke University School of Engineering.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George Torgerson; his sisters Mable Walke and Beatrice Wold; and nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Frances; his children, Susan Torgerson and husband, Karl DuMais, of Gainsville, Fla., Lynn Torgerson and husband, Francis Lunzer, of New York; and Edward Levi Torgerson of Aptos, Calif; and grandchildren Eliza and Tyler DuMais.
Graveside services: 2 p.m. today in Park Hill cemetery, Duluth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, or to the Parkinson Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 57, 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032. Dougherty Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Torgerson.

Ruth Holt Smith
Ruth Holt Smith, 96, of Kenwood Avenue, formerly of London Road, died Monday, May 21, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center.
Ruth was born in Rush City, Minn., on Aug. 31, 1904. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1922 and later from the Duluth Business University. Ruth was a legal secretary in the law office of U.S. Steel in Duluth for over 25 years.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a life member of the Duluth YWCA, a former member of the Duluth Women's Club and a member of the St. Louis County Historical Society.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, C. Herbert Smith in 1967.

She is survived by several cousins in Minnesota and the state of Washington.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Cooper Wiggin officiating. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Services entrusted to Crawford Funeral Service.

Thomas Sobczak
Thomas Sobczak, 52, of Duluth went to be with the Lord on Monday May 21, 2001, in his home with his family by his side.
He was born July 5, 1948, in Duluth to Leonard and Joyce Sobczak. He graduated from Denfeld High School and worked as an electrician for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for 25 years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of American Legion Post 71. He was an active member of the Park Point Community Club. He was a great hockey dad, a wonderful husband, father and mentor. He was a generous person and had many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marketta Sobczak of Duluth; his parents, Leonard and Joyce Sobczak of Duluth; a son, Brett; daughters Taunya Sobczak and Heather Sobczak, all of Duluth; brothers Tim (Elizabeth) of Duluth, David of Duluth and Dan (Kris) of Proctor; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation: 5 until the 7 p.m. wake prayers Thursday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and visitation continuing 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Friday in Holy Family Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Andy Knop, O.M.I., officiating. Interment in Forest Hill cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard.

Cecelia A. Erickson
Cecelia A. Erickson, 80, of Ridgeview Apartments, formerly of Old Highway 61, Proctor, died Saturday, June 9, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Duluth to Michael and Bertha (Kujawa) Tondryk. The family had a farm near Munger where Cecelia began to develop her talent as a cook. She married Carl W. Erickson Dec. 30, 1944, in Duluth. She worked at many different places over the years including Diamond Tool and Horseshoe Co., Frasier Shipyards and Diamond Match. She also worked at other places including the Radisson Hotel and the Holiday Inn. Her last job was in housekeeping at Nopeming Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church-Duluth Heights and a former member of St. James Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening and entertaining. She loved to cook and bake and put up jams and jellies. Soups were her specialty.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl W. Erickson, in 1992; brothers Michael and Walter Tondryk; sisters Violet Jankowski and Ardelle Anderson.

She is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Corey) Olson of Duluth; brothers Lawrence (Margie) Tondryk of Esko, Frank (Kathleen) Tondryk of Saginaw; sisters Lorraine (Ellsworth) Fermenich of Cloquet, Marlene (Richard) Kellett of Lillian, Ala., Patricia (Richard) Bosiacki of Hermantown; grandchildren Christopher (Danette) Thacker, Jason Wuolu; and many special nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday with wake prayers at 6:30 p.m. in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Wednesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Noel Stretton officiating. Interment in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Richard E. Hom
Richard E. Hom, 76, of Columbia Heights, Minn., formerly of Duluth, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 9, 2001, in his home.
Richard graduated from Denfeld High School, served in the Merchant Marine in World War II and was a sales engineer for 3M for over 25 years.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 44 years, Helen; daughters Cindy Koblas of Columbia Heights, Nancy (Rick) Garvin of Jackson, Minn.; grandsons Ryan, Jim, Chris and Patrick; a brother, David; sisters-in-law Lois and Aldean Hom; many loving relatives and friends.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today in Miller-Methven-Taylor Funeral Home, 831 40th Ave. N.E., Columbia Heights, (763) 789-3338. Visitation continues 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in First Lutheran Church of Columbia Heights, 1555 40th Ave. N.E., Columbia Heights, (764) 788-9653. Interment in Park Hill cemetery, Duluth.

Marguerite Pelinka
Marguerite Pelinka, 86, of Faribault, Minn., died Friday, June 8, 2001.
Survivors include children Richard (Julie Sands) Pelinka of Duluth, Robert (Carol), Mary Anne (Jerry) Sammon and Patricia (Bruce) Purdie; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; other relatives.
Visitation: 4-8 p.m. Tuesday with parish prayers at 6:30 p.m. in Parker Kohl Funeral Home, Faribault. Service 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Faribault. Interment in St. Lawrence cemetery, Faribault.

Vilma A. Fleming
Vilma A. Fleming, 73, of Wabasha Street died Sunday, June 10, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born May 21, 1928, to Bjarne and Elsie (Marken) Ritter in Duluth. Vilma married Ronald Burgie in 1950 in Duluth and later married Richard Fleming in 1985. She was employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. and by St. Luke's Hospital as a switchboard operator for over 30 years, retiring from Northwestern Bell in 1988.

Vilma was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Fleming; by Ronald Brugie; and by a brother, Roger Ritter.

She is survived by children Leanne (Steve Jegloski) Smith, Kim Mackey and Scott (Shelly) Burgie, all of Duluth; grandchildren Daniel (Morningstar) Smith, Lisa (Jeremey Hill) Smith, Amy Mackey, Darrin (Janet) Mackey, Matthew Burgie and Rachel Burgie; great-grandchildren Zachary, Jacob and Racquelle Smith and Michael Maki; stepdaughters Patricia (Richard) Archambault of Bloomington, Minn., and Karen Rajala of Littleton, Colo.; sisters Pat (Philip) Massie of Duluth and Jean (John) Hooker of South Range, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. service Tuesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Ann S. Desich
Ann S. Desich, 79, passed away Friday, May 18, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.
Ann was born Nov. 27, 1921, to George and Mildred Desich in Duluth. She was a graduate of Morgan Park High School and the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, Minn. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and her master's degree from the University of California. She served in the United States Nurses Cadet Corps from 1943 to 1945. Ann started her career as a nursing arts instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College in Santa Rosa, Calif., where she served for 19 years.

Ann was a member of The Artist's Round Table. She was proficient in the arts of watercolor and crafts, having won many honors at the Sonoma County Fair. She also was a student of the Bible, sharing her knowledge with small study groups in her home.

She was a member of St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Serbian Ladies Circle, Sv. Petka, a supporting member of the St. George Choir and a member of the Serbian National Federation Lodge 75.

Ann was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mildred Desich, and her sisters, Molly Desich and Dorothy D. Sjenicic.

She is survived by her sister, Helen C. Desich of Minneapolis; a brother-in-law, Radovan Sjenicic of Duluth; and friends.

The family is grateful to Dr. Monson and the nurses and staff of Lake Haven Manor for their loving care.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service today in Foley Chapel, the Very Rev. Milan Zbiljic officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Home, 5405 Ramsey St. Memorials may be sent to the Arthritis Foundation.
