Irwin R. "Irv" Lindevig
Irwin R. "Irv" Lindevig, 81, of Harvey Street died Monday, May 21, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.
He was born April 25, 1920, to Carl and Ella (Tomten) Lindevig in Westby, Wis. Irwin grew up in Coon Valley and Montana before being in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Washington. He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in the Medical Corps in both Germany and France.

Irwin married Margaret Wigg on May 22, 1948, in Carlton. He was employed at Universal Atlas Cement Co. as a heavy equipment operator for over 29 years. Following the closing of the cement company, Irwin worked at the Bridgeman's near the mall for 30 years, retiring at age 80. He was a member of Mount of Olives Baptist Church.

Irwin is survived by his wife of 53 years, Margaret; a daughter, Colleen (Bill) Peterson of Duluth; a son, Gordon of California; grandchildren Chad Peterson of Chicago and Jason (Tricia), Tanya and Jesse Peterson, all of Duluth; great-grandchildren Alexis, Sarah, Brianne and Gabrielle Peterson; a sister, Olive Kruger of Wrenshall; brothers Glenn and Lorren (Beverly), both of Cloquet; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Thursday in Mount of Olives Baptist Church. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Uno J. Saline
Uno J. Saline, 90, of Otsego Street died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
He was born in Markham, Minn., to Peter and Elina Saline. He lived in Duluth most of his life.

Uno had sailed on the Great Lakes with the Poker Fleet before working in Greenland for the Corps of Engineers. He joined the Navy, serving in World War II in the Pacific.

Uno became a beautician and owned and operated the Artistic Beauty Shop on First Street for 22 years. Then, with his wife Bernie, he operated a party and gift shop in Belknap Shopping Center in Superior before it was destroyed by fire in 1974.

Uno was a life member of VFW Post 137, Lake Superior Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies of Duluth, Aad Temple Shrine, a past patron of Lakeside Chapter OES and was past watchman of Shepherds Mizpah White Shrine.

Uno loved people, gardening the outdoors, dancing, hunting and fishing. He was a very devoted husband and father, and enjoyed life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Bertha Johnson; and brothers Willio and Ernest.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Bernadine (Bernie); sons Wesley and Gary (Valerie), both of Duluth; a brother, Danny of Duluth; sisters Elma Johnson and Irene Ellison, both of Seattle; and grandchildren Janel and Logan of Duluth.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Friday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Interment in Sunrise Memorial Park. Memorials to the Arthritis Foundation or Cancer Society would be appreciated.

Baird E. Hawley
Baird E. Hawley, 84, of Wayzata passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2001.
Baird was a former senior vice president of Norwest Bancorp. He loved his golf, loved his cars, and he loved to sail.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Jean; a daughter, Helen (Bill) Berget; a granddaughter, Katie; sisters Elizabeth of Cody, W.Va., Virginia of Fairbanks, Alaska, Dorothy of Washington and Ruth of Fergus Falls, Minn.; and a brother, Lloyd of Duluth.
Memorial service: 4 p.m. today in Wayzata Community Church Chapel, Wayzata Blvd. at N. Ferndale Road, with reception to follow in the church. Private interment in Groveland cemetery, Minnetonka. Memorials are preferred to the Animal Humane Society of Hennepin County. Arrangements by David Lee Funeral Home, Wayzata, (952) 473-5577.

T. Edward Torgerson
T. Edward Torgerson, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, of Parkinson's disease at the Stewart Health Care Center at The Cypress in Charlotte, N.C.
He was born June 29, 1922, in Duluth to Levi and Allette Torgerson. He was called into active service in the Navy a year before Pearl Harbor. In 1943, after serving three years aboard ship, he was selected for officer's training in the Naval V-12 program at Duke University. After completing two years of basic engineering in 16 months, he was sent to Notre Dame Midshipmen School and was later commissioned as a lieutenant and sent back to sea. When the war ended in 1946, Mr. Torgerson returned to Duke and graduated with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1949. He was later recalled for 17 months of duty in the Korean War.

Upon graduation, he reported to work at J.A. Jones Construction Co., in Charlotte, where he spent his entire working career. He retired from J.A. Jones in December 1983 as group vice president after a long, illustrious career. His 35 years with the prominent, internationally-known construction company spans not only its history but its diversity as well.

Mr. Torgerson's notable accomplishments in the construction industry began as estimator in J.A. Jones corporate office, advancing through increasingly important positions, from field superintendent to project manager to vice president and regional manager of the Tampa office, and culminating with group vice president in 1972, overseeing all commercial and instructional construction for the firm including four regional offices and two subsidiary companies. From Key West to Seattle and New York to San Francisco, some of the notable construction projects that Mr. Torgerson directed include: East Wing of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Seafirst Fifth Avenue Plaza in Seattle, AT&T; Headquarters in New York and Union Carbide Headquarters in Danbury, Conn.

He served as a member of the Board of Directors of J.A. Jones from 1974 until 1984 as well as director of two Jones subsidiaries during the same period. He served as president of Associated General Contractors of America-Florida Chapter, was a member of the Duke University Engineering Alumni Association Council and the Duke University Engineering Development Committee, and was honored in 1985 as a Distinguished Alumnus of the Duke University School of Engineering.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George Torgerson; his sisters, Mable Walke and Beatrice Wold; and nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Frances; his children, Susan Torgerson and husband Karl DuMais of Gainsville, Fla., Lynn Torgerson and husband Francis Lunzer of New York; and Edward Levi Torgerson of Aptos, Calif; and grandchildren Eliza and Tyler DuMais.
Graveside services: 2 p.m. Wednesday in Park Hill cemetery, Duluth. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207, or to the Parkinson Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 57, 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032. Dougherty Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Torgerson.

Alberta Adline Landowski
Alberta Adline Landowski, 68, of East Calvary Road died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Oct. 23, 1932, to Albert and Mamie Woorster in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Roman.

She is survived by her daughters, Jeannette "Snooky" (Reed) Herman of Lander, Wyo., Joetta (David) Godden of Duluth, and Jannice (John) Horton of Duluth; sons Jerome (Julie) of Esko, Jon of Duluth and Jody of Superior; a brother, Charles (Jean) Woorster of Duluth; a special friend and companion, Huey MacMillian of Duluth; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Thursday in Family of God Lutheran Church, 4097 Martin Road. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Obituary submitted by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Harry Johnson
Harry Johnson, 90, of Maple Grove Road, Duluth died Friday, June 8, 2001, in his home.
He was born Sept. 20, 1910, in Duluth. Harry retired from the DM&IR; Railway and lived in Greeley, Colo., for 12 years before returning to Duluth in May 2000. He married Joyce L. Johnson June 18, 1937.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Helmer, Lenard and Norman Trygg; and a sister, Lotti.

Harry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce; sons David (Joan) of Duluth, Michael (Roni) and Randall, all of Greeley, Colo.; a sister, Myrnie of Duluth; a brother, Erling of California; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home, the Rev. Michael Main officiating. Interment in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Bernice Rose (Kunkel) Nephew
Bernice Rose (Kunkel) Nephew, 73, of South 70th Avenue West passed away Friday, June 8, 2001.
She was surrounded by her family in her home Friday morning when she was carried by the angels to live with The Father.

She was born to Katherine (Resch) and Leo Kunkel Sept. 24, 1927, in Pearl Lake, Minn. She was raised on farms in and around the Pine City area until she was in high school, and then she moved to Duluth. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1945, joined the Cadet Corps and went on to graduate from St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1948. She retired from St. Mary's Hospital Obstetrics Department in 1987. She married Richard "Dick" Nephew in September 1948, and they made their home in Duluth, residing in Fairmont Park for more than 45 years. Bernice was a former member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church and was active in the Christian Mother's Association and the Sunday school program. She was currently a member of St. James Catholic Parish.

Her parents; a brother, Jerome Kunkel; and a sister, Margaret Kunkel Wilson preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband, Richard "Dick"; children Dale (Chris) of Duluth, John (Rose) of Proctor, Mary Beth (Jim) Boynton of Proctor, Katherine (Olli) Rahkola of Esko, Bob (Patty) of Duluth, Paul (Paula) of Proctor and Judy (Jeff) Dieryck of Duluth; brothers and sisters Ambrose Kunkel of Santee, Calif., Benedict (Jean) Kunkel of Big Fork, Minn., Norbert (Isabel) Kunkel of Cross Lake, Minn., Sister Francetta Kunkel SSpS of Techny, Ill.; her twin brother, Bernard (Lucille) Kunkel of Mapleton, Minn., Dolores Nystrom of Kimball, Minn., Leo A. "Tony" (Aggie) Kunkel of Rockford, Minn., Mary Catherine "Cass" Lee of Litchfield, Minn., and Sister Rita Kunkel OSB of St. Joseph, Minn.; 16 of the world's most wonderful grandchildren and three of the world's most beautiful great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Funeral Mass 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Fathers Charles Flynn and John Golobich officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery.

Frieda W. Bergstrom
Frieda W. Bergstrom, 85, of East Ninth Street died Saturday, June 9, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
She was born Jan. 7, 1916, to Adolph and Bertha (Dittman) Bader in Duluth. Frieda attended Duluth Central High School and married Kent Bergstrom April 10, 1948, in Duluth. She was active in church work at Central Baptist and Bethel Baptist in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Ruth Bader and Eileen Bader.

Frieda is survived by her husband, Kent; sons Timothy (Cheryl) of St. Paul, Lawrence of Duluth, Daniel (Pamela) of Duluth; a grandson, Dylan; and a stepbrother, Ed Van Rossum of Phoenix.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday and continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday, all in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
