Julia "Julie" Butler
Julia "Julie" Butler of Highland Chateau, formerly of Tyrol Street died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice after a tough battle with acute leukemia.
She was born in Duluth to John and Stella Kuyava. Julie had worked with Bridgeman-Russell, Singer Sewing Machine Co., and most recently at Western Electric. She married Raymond Butler in Duluth on June 20, 1942. She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church where she was a greeter, member of its OK Club and many other church projects. She was also a member of the Buoys and Gulls Club of Park Point. Julie enjoyed golf, bowling, traveling, reading, working crossword puzzles, volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital coffee shop and making crafts which she sold at Pioneer Hall.

Julie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Steve, Joseph, Charles and Wallace; sisters Frances, Sally, Vicky, Martha, Lenore and Helen.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond; sisters Sue Van Kleek of South St. Paul, Stella (Tony) Topolsky of Canton, Mich.; a brother-in-law, Evert Anderson of San Diego; sisters-in-law Tessie Kuyava of Chicago, Adelaide Kuyava of St. Cloud, Minn., Sophie Butler of Bel Air, Md., LaRaine Butler of Maplewood, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; and her dearest friend, Helen Sorman Differt.
Visitation: 9 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Tuesday in St. Lawrence Catholic Church. Burial in Sunrise cemetery. If desired, memorials may be made to the St. Lawrence Building Fund. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.

Jean K. (Davidson) Giesner
Jean K. (Davidson) Giesner, 69, of St. Paul, formerly of Duluth, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 25, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She is survived by children, grandchildren and many friends who will miss her.
Interment: 1 p.m. Tuesday in Oneota cemetery.

Judith Chadwick Clarke
Judith Chadwick Clarke, of Minneapolis died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001.
Born Oct. 5, 1912, in Gary, Ind., she was the daughter of Raymond D. and Agnes Rose Chadwick and grew up in the Morgan Park area of Duluth. Her father was principal of Morgan Park High School and later the first dean of Duluth Junior College. She attended Duluth Junior College and the University of Kentucky, graduating from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth. She worked as a medical records librarian at Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in Minneapolis and later as a feature article journalist for newspapers in Baton Rouge, La., and Stony Brook, N.Y. At age 59, she earned an M.S. in library science from Long Island University and worked as a librarian for Connetquot School District and the Emma S. Clark Memorial Library. Known for her infectious laugh and love of tennis, she played until age 84.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Clarke, who was the son of William F. and Elva Pinson Clarke, and brother-in-law, Howard P. Clarke of Duluth.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Miriam M. Andrus of Santa Fe, N.M.; brother-in-law, William F. Clarke of Berkeley, Calif.; a daughter, Ann P. (Jim) Cassin of Washington, D.C.; sons Thomas C. (Bonnie) Clarke of Denver and Roger C. (Sandra) Clarke of Minneapolis; and four granddaughters.
Private services. The family requests a spontaneous act of kindness in Judy's memory.

Raymond Felix Werdowski
Raymond Felix Werdowski, 57, of Maple Grove Road died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2001.
He was born May 1, 1944, in Duluth to Felix and Alice (Moen) Werdowski. Ray worked as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

Survivors include his cousins Lyle (Marion) Carlson, Roger (Joanne) Carlson and Bob (Barb) Carlson of Hermantown, Lloyd (Charlotte) Carlson of Superior, Irving (Sue) Hansen and Marland (Nancy) Hansen of Lutsen, Kenneth Kurtzer of Washington, Bernard Knutson and David Knutson of California, Ken (Gerry) Bragee of Birchwood, Wis., Nancy (Dean) Sharify of Greeley, Colo., and Joan (Wayne) Morin of McKinley, Texas.
Visitation: Begins 5 p.m. Monday with 7 p.m. wake prayers in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Burial in Polish Catholic cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

A. Lloyd Shannon
A. Lloyd Shannon, 77, of Fredenberg Township and of Lake Placid, Fla., passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, surrounded by his family.
He was born July 28, 1924, in Proctor to John and Emma (Hedine) Shannon. He graduated from Proctor High School in 1941 and from Duluth Business School. He was a World War II veteran and served in the Pacific theater of war. He worked for the federal and state employment services, the federal forestry service and for numerous years in construction trades. In 1968, he was elected to the St. Louis County Board of Commissioners. He retired in 1989 after 20 years of service as 5th District commissioner. He married Janice M. Jensen of Effie on June 8, 1949, in Rice Lake, Wis. He wintered in Lake Placid, Fla., and spent his summers in Fredenberg Township. He was a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, West Duluth, for 38 years and of the Fredenberg Chapel. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Placid.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; and a granddaughter, Maria.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; sons Gary (Jill) of Chaska, Minn., Michael (Liz) of Duluth, Steven (Nancy) of Esko; brothers Joseph (Joan) of Lake Placid, Hugh of Duluth; sisters Joyce Kahn of Nashville, Tenn., Luella (Carl) Markham of Springfield, Tenn., Myrna (Ray) Corbell of Hemet, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Marion Shannon of Duluth; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home, with visitation continuing from noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Westminster Presbyterian Church, the Rev. Thomas Little officiating. Interment in Oneota cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Pike Lake Presbyterian Church, Westminster Presbyterian Church, or to the American Heart Association.

Vivian Winifred White Logan
Vivian Winifred White Logan, 83, of Tioga Street passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001, in her home.
She was born in Duluth on July 18, 1918, to Frank and Grace (O'Shea) White. Vivian attended Washington Junior Elementary School and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1935. She was employed by ISD 709 as a secretary for 45 years, during which she worked for the superintendent. She retired in 1983.

Vivian was a life-member of Minnesota Association of Educational Office Personnel and also the National Association of E.O.P. She was chosen Educational Secretary by the M.A.E.O.P. in 1982-83.

Vivian was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer, archivist, and a trustee for the First United Methodist Church Foundation. She was a member and past matron of Zenith Chapter 25, Order of Eastern Star, a member and past president of Duluth Women's Club and the Duluth Business and Professional Women's Club. She was also a member and volunteer of St. Luke's Volunteer Guild.

Vivian is survived by her dear friends, Dawn and Richard Hill, Jason and Kelly Hill, and Doug and Karen Hill.
A gathering of friends will meet from 5-7 p.m. today in Crawford Chapel. Service at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First United Methodist Church. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.

Patrick R. Barry
Patrick R. Barry, 44, of Haines Road, Hermantown, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in Miller-Dwan Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 5, 1956, in Duluth to Donald and Joyce (VanDyke) Barry. He was an operator and mechanic for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, working at the Taconite Dock in Allouez. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. He enjoyed riding snowmobiles and motorcycles.

Pat's children were the love of his life. He enjoyed spending time with them, going to the races, playing, or just spending quiet time with them.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Joyce, in November 1998.

He is survived by his children, a daughter, Kimberly; a son, Brandon; and a stepson, Timmy; his father, Donald of Hermantown; brothers Stephen M. and Jim (Kathy), both of Duluth; sisters Kathleen (Andrew) Davis of Hermantown and Chris (Paul) Harney of Duluth; five nephews and a niece; Shawn Smith and his two children, Danielle and Dillon Smith; Ed, Jeff, and Susan Barry; Justin Smith and Josh Parker; and many friends.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Dwayne J. Terwey
Dwayne J. Terwey, 63, of Perch Lake Drive died Sunday, July 29, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
He was born in St. Rose, Minn., and moved to Duluth in 1941. Dwayne married his wife, Jan Verlennich, on April 6, 1957, in Duluth. He was co-owner and operator of Mr. D's with his son, Al.

Dwayne was active and very involved in this community, serving as president of the Duluth Area Liquor Association, was a member of the St. Louis River Association, Steelhead Association, West Duluth Business & Civic Association, Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce, National Rifle Association, and had served as chairman of Spirit Valley Days. He served in the Air Force National Guard and was a former member of West Duluth Moose Lodge 1478.

Preceding him in death were his father, Joseph; a sister, Margaret Dalbec; and sons Jay and Todd.

Surviving are his wife, Jan; children Al (Laura) of Esko and Kelly (Chuck) Mandsager of Side Lake, Minn.; his mother, Laura Terwey of Duluth; sisters Roxie (Joe) Nedesky of Provo, Utah, and Bonnie (Don) Galeski of Duluth; and grandsons Alex and Joe.
Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday with Mass of Christian burial at 1 p.m. in Holy Family Catholic Church, 2430 W. Third St. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Family prefers memorials be directed to children's cancer research. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Daniel P. Thorstad
Daniel P. Thorstad, 64, White Bear Lake, Minn., died Friday, July 27, 2001.
He was the son of Oliver and Elizabeth Thorstad.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Mike; a daughter; and an infant sister.

He is survived by his wife, Carole; daughter Michelle (Todd) Dunia of California; sons Dan Jr. (Peggy) of International Falls and Greg of Ray, Minn.; a sister, Lorrie Guith of Grand Rapids; brothers Dick of Las Vegas, Bill of Boca Raton, Fla., Tim of Mesa, Ariz., and Dave of Duluth; stepdaughter Susan Olson and stepson Bill Henrickson; five grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and longtime best friend, Bert Damberg.
Memorial service: 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Fort Snelling Historical Chapel, Minneapolis. Burial at Fort Snelling cemetery.

Gladys Marie Mell
Gladys Marie Mell, 64, of East Second St., died Saturday, July 28, 2001, in her home.
She was born April 28, 1937, in Cloquet to Charles and Irene (Andrews) Stoddard. She married Ernest Edwin Mell in Duluth on March 17, 1967, and was a homemaker. Gladys enjoyed knitting.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest; her sisters, Lorraine, Marcella and Beverly; and her brother, Bill.
At Gladys' request there will be no service. Inurnment in Park Hill cemetery Mausoleum. Memorials to Animal Allies would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.
