Arvid W. Saari
Arvid W. Saari, 78, of Esko died Monday, July 16, 2001, in his home.
He was born Sept. 19, 1922, to Peter and Lydia (Kykka) Saari of Route 1, Eveleth. Arvid attended school in Cotton. He was an Army veteran, serving in World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. He served in Germany and in France. Arvid married Lillian Marie Gihl on March 2, 1946, in Eveleth and moved to Esko in 1953. Arvid worked as a brakeman with the DM&IR; Railway, as an over-the-road truck driver for Ruan Transport and as a salesperson for L&M; Fleet Supply in Cloquet.

He was a lifetime member of the Gilbert W. Nordman Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 6, a lifetime member of VFW Post 6320 and the American Legion Post 71, all of Duluth. Arvid was a musician who loved to play the accordion, button box and harmonica with Grandma and Grandpa's Band, and earlier with the Spirit Valley Hillbillies. He spent many days volunteering at various nursing homes, senior centers and wherever a volunteer musician was needed.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jean Saari; a daughter-in-law, June Saari; a brother; and two sisters.

Arvid is survived by his wife, Lillian; sons Clyde of Stillwater, Minn., Les (Kay) of Bigfork, Mont., Steve (Lynea) of Deer Lodge, Mont., and Roy (Beth) of Duluth; 18 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Military honors accorded by the combined Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Diane Juanita Ossanna
Diane Juanita Ossanna, 59, of St. Louis Park, Minn., died Monday, July 16, 2001, in St. Louis Park.
She was born Sept. 29, 1941, in Duluth to Karl and Beverly (Mainella) Hansen. Diane was a graduate of Duluth Central High School. She later married Edward on Sept. 30, 1967, in Duluth before moving to Minneapolis. Diane worked as an electronics assembler and at home for a child care.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Edward "Tom" Ossanna; a son, Gregory Ossanna of Minneapolis; a daughter, Lisa M. (Gage S.) Lockhart of St. Louis Park; grandchildren Jessica A. Ossanna and Anthony G. Lockhart; sisters Gay Bergstrom of Las Vegas and Michelle Hansen of Minneapolis; and a brother, Karl A. Hansen of Garrison, Minn.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. with rosary at 7 p.m. Thursday in Gearty-Delmore Park Chapel, 3960 Wooddale Ave. S., St. Louis Park. Funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Friday in Gearty-Delmore Park Chapel. Mass of Christian burial at noon Friday in Church of the Holy Family, 5900 W. Lake St., St. Louis Park. Interment in Fort Snelling National cemetery.

Kenneth Lee "Ken" Hare
Kenneth Lee "Ken" Hare, 53, of Rose Road, Hermantown, died Monday, July 16, 2001, in his home with his family by his side, after a courageous year-and-a-half battle with cancer.
He was born April 29, 1948, in Duluth to Elroy and Irene Hare. He had been a lifelong Duluth and Hermantown resident. Ken was a 1967 graduate of Hermantown High School and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Anita L. Turchi on Jan. 19, 1969.

He was a 30-year member of Plumbers and Steamfitters Union Local 11. Ken enjoyed building street rods and restoring old Harleys for the past 26 years.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Anita; a son, Keith (Tonya) Hare of Minneapolis; a daughter, Lori (Rick) Olson of Duluth; grandsons Adam, Tyler and Benjamin Olson; his mother, Irene Evanson of Duluth; a brother, Eugene Hare of Hermantown; sisters Betty McDonald of Duluth and Cheryl Yumusaklar of Minneapolis; brothers and sisters-in-law Bob and Karen Turchi of Braham, Dale and Rita Turchi of Eveleth, and Bev and Bob Gracek of Carlton; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Tom and Pat Langlois and Carol Opland of Duluth and Donna Johnson of Mesa, Ariz.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Thursday with vigil service at 6 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Friday in St. James Catholic Church, 721 N. 57th Ave. W., the Rev. Father Charles Flynn officiating. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

Francis E. Brassard
Francis E. Brassard, 81, died Monday, July 16, 2001, in Brownstown, Mich.
He was beloved husband of Margaret; loving father of Bonnie (Gary) Speck and Nancy (Daniel) Bryant; dearest grandfather of Crystal, Courtney, Ryan and Lauren; and dear brother of Louis Brassard.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass Thursday in Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church, 21892 Gudith Road, Woodhaven, Mich. Arrangements by John Molnar Funeral Homes, Brownstown Chapel.

Roy Holt
Roy Holt, 94, formerly of House Street died Monday, July 16, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center.
He was born in Ashland to Fredrick and Hilda Holt and moved to Duluth in 1919. Roy graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1937 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He served in the Army during World War II. He had worked at A&E; Supply Co., where he retired as general manager in 1965. He had also worked at YoHo Photo Finishing Co. for 10 years and for Minnesota Steel.

He was a member of First Covenant Church and a former member of Salem Covenant Church. Roy, a civic volunteer for more than 50 years, received the 1988 Duluth Hall of Fame Award. He contributed to a number of groups and government panels over the years, including serving as vice chairman for the Board of Zoning Appeals and as president and treasurer of Animal Allies Humane Society. He also served as chairman of the City Planning Commission, as president, secretary and treasurer of the Gary-New Duluth Community Club, as a member of the Citizen's Coalition of Gary-New Duluth and the Spirit Valley Neighborhood Development Association, and on the steering committee of the West Duluth Citizens Community Development Plan. He served as president and treasurer of Goodwill Board of Directors. He also served on the Western Waterfront Trail Committee, Citywide City Pride and Citywide Citizens Advisory Committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Lillian in 1990.

Roy is survived by cousins Emily Anderson of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Gust Nordin of Chicago; and special friends Bill and Veronica Elowson of Superior, and Lucille Olsen, Bill Spehar, Marsha Chipman, Will and Alice Highmark, Herb Palmer, Lee Matchett and Lydia Bennett, all of Duluth.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in First Covenant Church, 2101 W. Second St. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Family prefers memorials directed to Animal Allies Humane Society, 407 W. Michigan St. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Richard J. Prusak
Richard J. Prusak, 68, of Duluth passed away Monday, July 16, 2001, in his home.
He was born Aug. 8, 1932, in Duluth to Frank and Louise Prusak. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He worked as an accountant for Duluth Water and Gas until his retirement after 30 years of service.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Friars of St. Francis. He served on the finance council at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church. He was a member of the Plus 55 Club, St. Francis Xavier Travelers, American Legion Post 71, Road Toppers Car Club, AARP and a board member of the Duluth City and County Employee's Credit Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, David (Ruth) F. Prusak in 1974; and a grandnephew, Terry Kwapick.

He is survived by his nephew, Dave (Carolyn) Prusak of Esko; a niece, Kathy (Dennis) Kwapick of Duluth; a cousin, Patricia Paszak of Duluth; a grandnephew, Randy Kwapick; his faithful companion, Princess; and many friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with a rosary by the Friars of St. Francis at 6:30 p.m. in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues from 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Thursday in Holy Family Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Tony Wroblewski O.M.I. officiating. Interment in Polish Catholic cemetery.

Stella Mitchell
Stella Mitchell, 85, of Dunedin, Fla., formerly of Duluth, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001.
She was a graduate of the College of St. Scholastica School of Nursing and served as a registered nurse at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. She taught nursing at St. Mary's for St. Scholastica. She was personnel manager at one time for Freimuth's Department Store. She headed the nursing staff at Miller-Dwan Hospital and served on the board of directors there.

Survivors include her husband, James of Dunedin; nieces and nephews.

Ida Roth
Ida Roth, 84, of Fargo, N.D., formerly of Duluth, died Monday, May 21, 2001, in Elim Care Center in Fargo.
She is survived by sons James (Annette), and Jerold; two grandsons; three brothers; and two sisters.
Visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday in West Funeral Home in West Fargo, N.D., and one hour prior to the 2 p.m. service Friday in Balfour Lutheran Church, Balfour, N.D. Burial in Balfour cemetery.

Angeline "Koula" Pappas
Angeline "Koula" Pappas, 93, formerly of Superior, died Tuesday, May 22, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home, Duluth.
Koula was born April 15, 1908, in Lamia, Greece, to Nick and Elaine Kaltsas. She moved to Duluth in the early 1920s. She married James Pappas, and they owned the Hi-Spot Coney Island in Superior until 1969. Koula was a member of Twelve Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church and the Ladies of Philoptochos.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1973; brothers James and Nick Kaltsas; and a sister, Elaine Pafelis.

Koula is survived by a daughter, Elaine (Michael) Kolanczyk of Superior; grandchildren Steven Patronas and Jason Patronas, both of Duluth, and Nik Patronas and Liza Patronas, both of the Twin Cities; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today with a memorial Trisagion at 7 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service at 10 a.m. Friday in Twelve Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, Superior. Memorials to Twelve Holy Apostles Greek Orthodox Church. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

Agnes Fraser Granquist
Agnes Fraser Granquist, 88, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in Savannah, Ga.
Born in Duluth, she moved to central Florida in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lee Granquist; her parents, Donald and Catherine Fraser; sisters Margaret Kelso and Katherine Laechel; and brother, Donald M. Fraser.

She is survived by a son, Charles Lee Granquist Jr. of Hamden, Conn.; a daughter, Ann Hubbs of Savannah, Ga.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: at a later date on Nantucket Island, Mass.

Gerald K. Johnson
Gerald K. Johnson, 69, of Roseville, Minn., formerly of Hermantown, passed away Monday, May 21, 2001, in St. John's Hospital, Maplewood, Minn.
He was born in Duluth, graduated from Hermantown High School in 1950 and from UMD. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany.

He is survived by his wife, Eleonore of Roseville; sons Steven and Gary of Roseville; one grandson; sisters Marlene Van Loon of Hermantown, and Jackie (Brian) Andreen of Tucson; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Koski of Cherry Hill, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services Friday in Roseville. Burial in Fort Snelling National cemetery in Minneapolis. Memorials to American Cancer Society would be appreciated.
