Carol and her husband, Dale S. Darrow, moved to Minneapolis following the end of World War II. In the 1950s they opened Topp Cleaners on 43rd and France Avenue South in Minneapolis, which they operated for a number of years. In the 1970s Carol became a co-owner of Esse Driving Schools with her brother, Bobby. She coordinated the growth of the business throughout the Twin Cities Metro Area and into northern Minnesota, and was the voice on the phone who provided information to thousands of teenagers and adults over the years regarding the company's services. Carol's husband, three brothers, and a son all went off to, and returned from, war. In the 1970s she supported the efforts of Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Carol loved her home, from which she worked, and which she shared with her husband and children, and later with numerous extended family members. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, making dolls, sewing, her high school reunions, and traveling. Carol especially enjoyed the time she was able to spend with Virginia Fredrickson of Seattle, and Rosemary Olson of Duluth, who have been her friends since childhood; her sisters-in-law Alice and Virginia Esse; her cousin, Arlayne Nelson; fellow grandparents Maggie and Bruce Drew; and her neighbors for the past 50 years, Lois Meuleners and Vi Osgood.
