Dwight "Butch" William Hiler
Dwight "Butch" William Hiler, 55, of Oakes Avenue died Monday, April 16, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth, following a courageous battle against cancer.
He was born to Agnes and Alfred Hiler on July 6, 1945, in Cleaves, Ohio. He served our country in the Army from July 23, 1962, until April 20, 1965, having spent part of that enlistment in Vietnam.

He lived in Superior from 1985 until 1988 and moved back to Superior in 1999.

He is survived by his fiancee, LaDonna Booth of Superior; children Kenneth Rogers of Alexandria, Minn., and Karla Rogers of Fountain City, Wis.; and a grandson, Jacob Lackner of Fountain City.
Memorial service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Downs Funeral Home, Chaplain Stephen Wlosinski, of St. Luke's Hospital, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Thomas F. Stein VFW Post 1091.

Doris Elaine Shaw
Doris Elaine Shaw, 83, formerly of Superior passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2001, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
She was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Duluth. Doris had lived in Flagstaff for the past five years and previously lived in Phoenix for 40 years, where she was employed as a real estate broker until 1970. She was the first female to serve on the Arizona State Board of Realtors. Doris also worked as administrative assistant to the Arizona state land commissioner before retiring in 1992.

Doris enjoyed her bridge club, tap dancing and her stock investing club in Phoenix. She was an active member of the Unity Church and the Adult Center in Phoenix.

She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Dorothy Bender, in October 2000.

She is survived by her daughter, Catherine (Fredric) Sartorius of Flagstaff; grandchildren Katy (Frank) Nutter of Phoenix, Dustin (Ana) Hamman of Flagstaff and Teddi Sartorius of Flagstaff; a brother, Russell (BJ) Swanson of Lancaster, Calif.; a niece, Linda Wilson of California; and nephews Dennis Swanson of California, Bobby Bender of Wisconsin and Jim Bender of Illinois.
A memorial service was Monday, April 16, in Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Flagstaff. Inurnment at a later date in Oneota cemetery. Downs Funeral Home assisted the family with the local arrangements.

Harold Norman "Whitey" Olsen
Harold Norman "Whitey" Olsen, 82, of Pattison Park died Thursday, April 19, 2001.
Harold is survived by his wife, the former Jane Anderson; a daughter, Susan (Kevin) Swanson; a son, Harold "Tim" (Cathy) Olsen Jr.; a sister, Gudrun Rostad; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; several in-laws; nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Monday in the Darrow Road Wesleyan Church. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home.

Peter Raye
Peter Raye, 86, of Superior died Thursday, April l9, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; a son, Peter David (Dorlene) Raye; a daughter, Diane Kruger; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers; a sister.
Wake service: 5 p.m. Monday with 6 p.m. Masonic service, all in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in St. George Serbian Orthodox Church, Gary/New Duluth. Burial in Greenwood cemetery.

Ronald Lloyd Wick
Ronald Lloyd Wick, 60, of Superior died Monday, March 19, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior.
Ron is survived by sons Scott (Penny) and Brian (Shelly); brothers Bob (Nancy), Gary and Dennis; and grandchildren Danielle, Eric, Codie and Brady.
Memorial gathering: 4-6 p.m. Thursday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior.

Albert R. Williams Sr.
Albert R. Williams Sr., 83, of South Range, formerly of Maple died Monday, March 19, 2001, in Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born March 8, 1918, in Ordway, Colo., and lived in northern Wisconsin most of his life.

Mr. Williams had worked as a machine operator for Great Northern and Burlington Northern railroads for many years. He was a graduate of Superior East High School and worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps for many years. He was a member of Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verna; an infant daughter, Ruth; a granddaughter, Laura; his parents; and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by a daughter, Irma (Bud) Cooper of South Range; sons Albert Jr. (Blandina) of Lake Nebagamon, Roger (Roxy) and Tom (Pat), both of Maple; grandchildren Tammy, Jimmy, Gene, Tony, Robbie, Amy, Arthur, Mike, Cristy, Cathy, Ardie and Belinda; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers George, Perry, Bill and Richard; sisters Phoebe, Betty, Violet and Bertha; and his stepmother, Ruby Donaldson of Arizona.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in Downs Funeral Home, the Rev. Gerald Presuhn officiating. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.

Betty Mae (Karlson) Peterson
Betty Mae (Karlson) Peterson, 69, of Oakes Avenue died Monday, March 19, 2001.
She is survived by her husband, James; daughters Jeanne (Gord) Zaharik, Debbie (Dave) Christensen, Vicky Peterson, Cindy (Robert) Bennett and Jackie (Fred) Trettin; a son, James E. (Terri); 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
Visitation: 5 p.m. today in Downs Funeral Home, Superior. Funeral 11 a.m. Thursday in Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.

Loretta M. Hay
Loretta M. Hay, 84, formerly of Hayes Court died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Charlotte Martinson; nephews Charles and Craig Martinson; and a special friend, Rita M. Nelson.
Interment in Concordia cemetery, Forest Park, Ill. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home, Superior.

James J. "Jim" Shykes
James J. "Jim" Shykes, 75, of North 28th Street died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital of Superior.

He was born March 19, 1926, to John and Teresa (Schuster) Shykes in Benton, Wis. Jim married Dolores I. Lovick Nov. 1, 1969, in Duluth. He was worked at the University of Wisconsin-Superior for 32 years in the maintenance department. Jim attended the Cathedral of Christ the King and was a union member at UWS.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Maysie; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores; brothers John (Beth) Shykes of Superior and Matthew (Astrid) Shykes of Duluth; a sister, Leona Ellis of Superior; 10 nephews; five nieces; and many great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Duluth and 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Friday in Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Dexter Richard St. George Jr.
Dexter Richard St. George Jr., 61, of East First Street died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in his residence.
He is survived by his mother, Dorothy; sons Dexter Richard III and Clayton Mitchell (Melissa); a sister, Carol St. George; a niece; and several nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with 6:30 p.m. prayer service in Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home. Service 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Interment in St. Francis cemetery.

Trevor James Mattison
Trevor James Mattison, infant son of Travis and Christina Mattison of Grand Avenue was stillborn Friday, Feb. 16, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his paternal grandparents, James and Diana Mattison; maternal grandmother, Eleanor Hallgren; maternal great-grandmother, Verna Bakos; and paternal great-grandparents, Margaret and Larry Erickson.
A private family service will be held Wednesday. Interment in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home.

Henning E. Bergquist
Henning E. Bergquist, 85, of South State Highway 35, Superior died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in Villa Marina.
He is survived by a daughter, Luanne (James) Staupe; a son, Byron (Delores); five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth (Otto) Roen.
Visitation: after 5 p.m. today and service 11 a.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home. Burial in Graceland cemetery. Arrangements by Downs Funeral Home.

Gerald F. Parenteau
Gerald F. Parenteau, 71, of Superior died Sunday, March 18, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Irene; daughters Bobbi Sue (Gary) Holgers and Bonnie Collins; a stepdaughter, Patricia Mattson; four grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; four siblings; and other relatives.
Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Wednesday in Concordia Lutheran Church. Inurnment in Riverside cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.
